- Installed the latest GIMP for windows
- put the different hearts to animate in different layers
- under ScriptFu/Animation picked "blend"
- saved result as animated indexed gif

Could be worse, I used a 6-layer Photoshop CS2 file, ImageReady CS2, tweening, a custom background and a total of 35 frames for mine. ;-)
(Does being in graphic design for over a decade count as cheating?)
