Overdue rent = locked out of bases?
Sounds right to me. I've heard it both ways, but a system like you said would discourage raid bases and be essentially no penalty for PvE/Socail bases. Rent is rent, and they should lock you out if you don;t pay, facilities inside or now.
PS that may sound a bit harsher than I meant it. I just think if there's going to be rent at all, it should be equitable and effective across the board for both types of user.

Sounds good to me!
... but then, I might be a trifle bitter about the fact that SG bases, long my most anticipated feature to be introduced with City of Villains, have turned out to be little more than Yet Another PvP Venue, 'cause, you know, three dedicated zones plus the Arena JUST WASN'T ENOUGH.
So don't go by me.
Frickin' PvP.
I think the medical transporter, zone transporter and SG mission computers are good non-PvP reasons to have a base, RP aspects aside. Now if we can just afford the darn things
I wouldn't mind rent for bases not set up for raids. I just don't know if that's the way it is or if we ran into a bug. Also if that is the way it is, how far overdue will we go before we're locked out. I keep finding info on building bases but not much on rent. My forum search powers must need slotting up.

Mm, well, there's the rub, isn't it. Oh, and they'll need to fix that bug that makes the teleport beacons go away, if they haven't already.
I'm not sure what the advantage of a medical bay is, anyway, since the city already has a perfectly good one that you don't have to pay for in every city zone and a couple of hazard zones.
For my money, the non-PvP reasons to have a base are far overshadowed by the amount of work and hassle they require. I don't mind working for a reward, but the curve is just too damn steep right now. Looking at the way the cost-reward curve for SG bases is set up now, it seems apparent to me that it's been optimized for big groups doing high-payoff (which usually means high-level) content, and that raiding is bases' primary raison d'etre.
To which I say, pfui. If I just wanted a closet to roleplay in, I'd stake out one of those parking garages in Skyway City and call it Justice Guild Headquarters.
If you don't pay rent for long enough then you will be locked out of the base.
The med transporter will put you back where you fell instead of making you go back to the mission site from a hospital. That's really handy if you're in a hazard zone or deep in Orenbega. Is that worth the cost and effort? I don't know, but it is pretty cool
But you're right about things being weighted to the big super groups who can earn more prestige faster. Our team isn't huge but it's not tiny either and we're still working on our base. Still they are working on something for smaller groups and even solo heroes.
Until then, we're slogging along earning prestige. A few more payments and it'll be all ours! Except the rent

That's not what we were told in beta. Lord Recluse (I think - some red name anyhow) said that not paying rent would just prevent you from using stuff that required power, like teleporters and the rez machines. When did that change?

Interesting to be told about this 2 months into Live. We were told explicitly that we never had to pay rent, and the only effect would be that our equipment would go offline. Not true anymore I see.

This is a direct contradiction of previous information, and what we were told in Beta. Not that I'm really surprised anymore.
@Mindshadow
The main reason I held off on even getting a base for my CoV character is that I didn't want to have any rent until I actually had plenty of prestige, and a few, functioning rooms. I mean, if I had gotten a base right off the bat, but had nothing but the entrance room and some decorations, what would be the point, since I'd get charged rent on that.
Once I got a few people into my SG, I decided to get the base (as it's a nice, social area for SG members), and managed a few rooms. I wasn't going to worry about rent, since it will still be some time (and a lot of prestige) before we can purchase energy and control units, as well as a functioning workroom (i.e. small room, one workbench that gets switched out when needed).
Now it looks like we'll have to lose prestige for rent, even though we haven't gotten anywhere near the ability for those aforementioned things, and worse, not paying for it, we'll just lose access to the base entirely. And you can't simply "give back" the base either. Once you get a base, your SG will always have a base, even if it's just an entrance room with no decorations.
Love the bases, love decorating bases, don't mind the prestige cost as much as I thought I would (please add cheaper things that don't serve any raid purpose, though), but give some thought to the SGs that can't "prestige farm" stuff, due to low membership, shorter play hours, etc.

Add me to the [censored] group, who was somewhat molified about the surprise of rent by the very explicit statements of Lord Recluse that if you didn't want to bother with the rent, no worries, you'd never be in arrears more than a month and it just meant the powered items wouldn't work.

I've been explicitly telling my SG not to pay rent until we have some functional base equipment, because we were told that the worst thing that happens is they turn off all the power, so to speak. At no point did anyone say that you would get locked out of the base.
Once again, this is not really fair to smaller SGs. We're essentially paying monthly rent on a bunch of decorative rooms now. Upkeep for teleporters and hospital bays, sure. Upkeep for what amounts to a bunch of overpriced decorative rooms, that's not so user friendly.

I was under the impression that if you didn't ever pay base rent you would only loose access to things that would be useful in raids. Therefore if you never wanted to do raids you'd never need to pay rent.
Our base hasn't even been made fully functional yet but we get into it and use it for role play and to play with the editor, and we've let the rent go for a long time. Last night we couldn't get into it at all until someone finally paid.
Am I remembering wrong? Are you required to pay rent just to use the base even if you aren't using it for raids?
Thanks!
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm afraid you're remembering somewhat wrong. There is a grace period after your first missed payment during which you base is powered down. But if you continue to ignore rent, eventually all access to your base is lost. Once you pay your rent, access is restored.
Can a base be raided while the occupants (I can't spell) are locked out?

Since that's the case, can we have it changed from what ever (I think once a week) to once a month? Some people at least on guardian have gone missing, so it takes time to get them back online to pay the rent so everyone else can get inside.

I didn't pay rent this month and teleporter works, rez ring, worktable, couldn't find ANYTHING that didn't work. That being said, my rent is only like a week late. Sounds like I might be getting myself locked out soon, I was planning on NEVER paying the rent, heh heh...

That's not what we were told before. It was said to us that if we failed to pay rent, our base would lose functionality, but we could still enter it normally. Also, we were told at about hte same time that rent could never get more than one "rent cycle" behind- it doesn't accumulate, and paying the most recent rent charge would catch us up completely.
This didn't come out of thin air. This is what the dev team posted, and to find out 2 months after the game went live that this isn't the way it works is a fairly major "oversight." Can you tell us if the second part of this is still true, that back rent doesn't accumlate, or did you guys decide to change that without telling anyone too?

/Signed. I remember the information that things would just power down, not be locked out.
Yep. I also remember a specific mention that we wouldn't be able to use functional items, not that we'd be locked out of the base. In fact, that was a big reason our small SG decided to go ahead and make a base anyway -- we figured we'd just avoid paying rent and use it as a social place to start with.
In fact, I saved Lord Recluse's post about this:
[ QUOTE ]
Rent does not cause item decay. The affect of rent is that your functional items become non-functional. You can be offline for a month and your base will be unchanged. Back rent does not accrue. All you need to do is make the most current payment and your base is fully functional again.
