The Last CoV Primer - How's This Gonna Work?

This is true - and thanks for the material you sent me via PM - but remember that this thing is a primer not an encyclopedia.

1. An elementary textbook for teaching children to read.
2. A book that covers the basic elements of a subject.

I'm not trying to compete with the CGW article or the CoV website. This is a crib sheet with contextual information to answer the basics in a newb-friendly way. If I wanted to, I could probably build an entire multi-section site at this point with what has been leaked about CoV. As it is, there are several bits in here that haven't been covered by the mags (and I know for a fact that one or two articles have cribbed notes from previous versions of this Primer - sneaky monkeys!).

I wish I had the time and energy to make a comprehensive site about CoV, but I already spend too much time writing about the game when I should be playing the game.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I tried searching and couldn't find anything. Are villains able to use capes from the beginning? If so, will heroes be able to as well? Seems a little unfair for villains to get them right off the bat, but heroes have to "earn" them.

Nothing solid has been said. However, we are guessing that there will be some reason for minimum of l20 (repect of the guy that is letting you be your own villianous self? Lord R.'s respect being forced upon you? He afraid that you might get sucked into a jet enginie/whirlpool/vortex if you don't have enough practice with your travel powers first? Ok, my account has had kind of a twisted past. Full of holes where it was canceled because some things/people hate me, but that's another story. However, I've been able to play nearly continuosly from a day or two after launch. What are the odds I can get an invite to the COV beta? I know I'm gonna buy COV but i'm very impatient and the bugs find me (it seems) so i'd make a good bug hunter (psst hear that devs? the bugs find me )

btw clint thanks for all the info. you answered a lot of questions. I used to think ncsoft had everything very hush hush about COV but they haven't been very quite have they. Just making small statements everywhere but where I've been looking

Any one know If villains can go into Pargon (visit not PVP) if we have both games? I've heard alot of debate on this but found no real answer other than in the 2nd Gamespot movie Statesman says "Not all the action will happen here, some missions will take you into paragon city" (at the 3:15 mark for those who doubt me)
I assume the answer would be a yes, What better way to sell CoV to CoH'ers than have a monster looking toon or a mastermind with a pack of ninjas walking around in steel canyon?
Anyhow was just wondering it seems I can't get too far into a thread without hearing this debated or someone just stating that you can't while debating some other point.

Early indications are that either that a new zone in Paragon City will open up to CoV action or an existing zone will be repurposed for CoV. (That's actually a very recent revelation.) The devs have gone on record a couple of times stating plainly that player-Villains will not be walking around the streets of Paragon City, nor will player-Heroes be walking around much of The Rogue Isles.

Now the current situation could evolve over the course of beta, and they could also make outdoor instanced missions into Paragon for player-Villains, but that's how things are right now with what has been mentioned in articles and forum posts.

Posted

To expand on Clintonian's thoughts. I think (and this is my conjecture) that any missions where Villians go into Paragon City will end up being instanced, similar to train missions.

Imagine a Train mission bringing you into Paragon City, and then you have to stealth/fight your way to the entrance of the building where the actual mission takes place. If you stealth your way there, the heroes have a longer delay before they find out where you are going. If you fight your way there, the heroes have a quick notification and may end up meeting the villian in the streets or shortly after the villians enter the mission.

Imagine, as a hero, accepting this mission, and getting to the mission before the villians, and waiting to set up an ambush inside the mission. Or going invisible and hiding on the roof above the entrance.

How do you know about our missions?! Who told you?! Who do you work for?! You can't catch a dead man! (shoots himself) Dammit, I've got invuln, looks like I have to wait for I5 before I can die... (looks at watch) is I5 out yet, I have a lot of paranoid to be today, and don't need to be wasting time waiting to shoot myself for the sake of a joke. BTW, I was going to ask this sooner, but if CoV forums don't open during beta, could you keep this thread stickied so beta-ers can post stuff about the game here?

This section will likely remain as-is during CoV beta, but discussion of the details of the active closed beta prior to it going to 'open beta' status will be verboten. Word to the wise.

Yep. As was done with the CoH beta, CoV will most likely have a "secret" forum for those in the beta to post bugs, glitches, questions, praises and cries.

MORE SECRETS?! AHHHH! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, IT'S A CONSPIRACY. BTW, thanks, Clint, I probably would've gotten my *ss tossed out of beta after the first day if it weren't for you. You're my fave CoV poster (ScionofSatan is my fave CoH poster, due to an eloquent post concerning I5, and Jack's "vision"). Now, I hope you remember, I'm only talking about non-red posters, as Lord_Recluse r0x0rz j00r b0x0rz.

There's nothing online to indicate your full sign-up date. Your PlayNC Account page only shows your next billing date. Many people sign up for the forum when they start their subscription, but some don't. Best thing to do is check credit card statements or count up used game cards. I've never seen a post from someone whose gotten the info from emailing support, but it's something one might try.

[/ QUOTE ]

I emailed tech support and they WILL tell you the date of your account creation. I did it for my and my wife's account about a month ago. However, I don't know if they will tell you how many paid months (i.e. credits) you have. I know there was a couple of times that a week or so had lapsed in between account renewels for me. So even though my account was created 14 months ago, with the accumulated lapses in account renewel, I might only have (I'm exagerating) 12 month/credits. Fine for me, but others who might have been borderline to begin with might be screwed by it. Tech support may or may not have this info. I didn't ask.

Hey, it's the guy with the beta slot (almost 100% sure, since been here since day one), I was wondering if I could say vague things like "CoV beta is so much fun." I like to gloat, but I'll just completely steer clear of these boards if that sort of thing is taboo, too. This is my first game beta, if you haven't guessed. Also, is it total months, or does it have to be an uninterrupted period of time? It lets me gauge how many people will be with me in beta (more if total, less otherwise).

You know the monosyllabic dev-speak Statesman uses sometimes that frustrates players? Let that be your guide as far as CoV closed beta comments. Here are some sample phrases:

"I'm enjoying the beta."
"I hear your concerns about ____ and I can say that they have been addressed in some fashion."
"Soon."

I know from being in CoH beta that it's probably just best to be silent about it on the CoH forum because the slope is so slippery. There will be plenty of people to chat with inside the closed beta forum.

Posted

Awww, but I want to drive people crazy with things like that! I've always envied the devs' ability to drive others mad with anticipation through absolute and total vagueness and evasion of the subject. Some samples:

"We're currently looking into it (it being whatever the people are talking about), and shall adress it if something comes up."

"It was their (the devs) original intent to do that (that being whatever's being talked about)."

"Soon."

"You can find out more (no matter what the subject is, see my sig, it's a real answer from Manticore to a question someone asked regarding the pen & paper CoH RPG he's plugging, now) in the new novel, 'The Web of Arachnos.'"

I may be posting somewhere I probably shouldnt but I'm rather curious about something on COV.
From what I gather COV is going to be completly Seperate from COH, why is that exactly? When other games such as "Ultima Online" have all there new "Exspansion Packs" combined with the pervious game and Account.
Small example of what I mean, In Ultima Online, you had a choice wether you PVP'd or not, you didnt go into the "PVP Zones" If you became a Villian you became red and were unable to enter any of the non PVP areas untill you did so many good deeds that made you a good guy again. What I want to know is why cant COV be an exspansion for COH, and go on to our Account, without having to make a new account. I dont think that is really right if you ask me. What about those people who have let say 3accounts per household, they all want COV, thats 6 accounts plus from what i'm gathering alittle more in fee.
Would it be so hard to combine the two? And give the accounts that "Upgraded " to COV the new AT's and COV things? and the ones who dont have COV things just stayd the same. Instead of forcing people to purchase another game create another account let us Upgrade our original one.
Anyhow I'm rambling now so i will stop...
Umm think about my confusing gibberish some before COV is complete? CUz I want it but dont plan on getting it as of now because of how its planned out with different accounts.

David “Zeb” Cook - It seemed like a natural idea. In City of Heroes we let you play a hero. In City of Villains, you’re a villain so we wanted to give the full experience from the ground up. We didn’t want to put a barrier to people who might be interested in doing that by saying they must have City of Heroes first. That would be forcing them to buy the game. Instead we would rather people said, “Hey, this is fun! I think I’ll check out City of Heroes too.”

The way that sounds is more like Ya lets rip them off and get more money from our cosumers, mor money more accounts sure we're the game of the year.... Think about it

Actually, in all other MMORPGs you do need to have the original game if you want to play the expansions. For example, if you don't have the original Everquest installed on your computer, you are unable to play any of the expansions. The same is true of CoH. If you haven't bought/installed CoH, you can't use any of the Issues that have come out. Further confusing the issue for some people is that Cryptic/NCSoft aren't charging for expansions. All of the major updates which have been released so far (Issues 1 to 5) would qualify as expansions in any other MMORPG (like EQ) and we would have had to pay for them.

Actually, by doing it this way, they are ensuring a much higher subscription base. AFAIK (and I am not an expert) CoV will be the first game that allows you to play the bad guy. That in itself will bring in lots of people. If, however, CoV were tied to CoH, the overall numbers would be a lot less, simply because it would be an expansion, and not a standalone product.

That's not necessarily true. Many MMOs have opposing factions. What this structure does is allow the dev teams to tailor their content roughly in parallel, providing an opportunity for good creative tension between the games. It's also likely a result of of being less capitalized than the spate of big-budget, licensed franchise MMOs that have come and continue to come out. It's an experiment in MMO game form and business plan. I think it's fascinating on paper. I can't wait to see how it plays out in practice.
