Inside jokes and obscure references

Gah.. I didn't realize this was a necropost and almost send a "[censored]??" message to ol' Gilgamesh. Good thing I caught it, heh heh.

Also: Without reading through 20 pages of this... does this thread contain forum in-jokes such as the early-post mentioned Kill Skuls or even "Laser cannon! Pew Pew!"? If not... is there a list or mash-together of forum in-jokes? >.>

There's a mission in CoH where you rescue a Professor Heim, who's working on some sort of interstellar travel technology. I assume it's a reference to Burkhard Heim. I thought that was cool.

Back when I first started I compiled a very similar list and posted it in my blog on Myspace. However, since then I think it got pushed of by new ones or deleted for some reason because it's not there anymore.

One of the ones I think is fairly obvious is Cutlass Isles in Peregrine.

If you've ever been over there you know that the whole place is literally SWARMING with Rikti monkeys.

[/ QUOTE ]

That one reminds me of Jurassic Park, with the feral beasts multiplying out of control among downed fences and trashed industrial buildings.

I got a smile out of a mission that was described as "Defeat Shannon of the Lost".

Ill comment on the Clockwork since..well I'm a tech head.

Tesla Prince/knight/king/duke -Nikola Tesla's main claim to fame lay with his invention of the alternating current motor. Tesla believed that alternating current was vastly superior to (Edison's) direct current, but the problem was the lack of a practical motor. Alternating current is practical because of the fact that it can be altered or converted to suit a variety of situations. For example, if the voltage is made quite high, then the current necessary for a specific level of power is very low. This low current then becomes very efficient when sending electrical power over very long wires. (This is the reason why the power lines running across the countryside are at very high voltages.)

[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, virtually all of the technology associated with alternating current, as well as radio (after protracted legal wrangling, Tesla was finally vindicated in 1943 when the Supreme Court overturned Marconi's patent in favor of Tesla's earlier patents -- when an engineer [Otis Pond] once said to Tesla, "Looks as if Marconi got the jump on you" regarding Marconi's radio system, Tesla replied, "Marconi is a good fellow. Let him continue. He is using seventeen of my patents."), remote control, flourescent lights, polyphase power systems, disk-turbine rotary engines, wireless power transmission, and a host of other inventions, many of which were lost after his death.

"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."

I always assumed that King's Row was a reference to Jack "King" Kirby .

This is a comic book inspired game after all.

Damn I hope this the right answer and if it isn't Dev get a Reference to Jack Kirby now!

While I'm at it, I'm stunned that in a year and a half, nobody has mentioned the fast food chain City of Gyros.

On one of the Croatoa missions, you fight a named Witch. I always thought this was a reference to Fran Drescher, as the Witch was called Fran, and has Sonic Blast based powers. (Anyone seen any work by her, will notice her voice is kinda 'special')

There is a page titled 'Easter Egg' in ParagonWiki but it's not even close to the size of this massive thread. Either the person (gods, I'm sorry, I forgot his name, there's a poster round ehre who does update the ParagonWiki stuff... I'm brainfarting though so I apologize to him) either this thread literaly sploded his head or his still compiling stuff.

I hope you guys didn't splode him. I love ParagonWiki.

The references were moved out of the Easter Egg page to their own page. They were growing to overwhelm the Easter Egg page, and really are not Easter Eggs, so they were given their own page.

As for editing, anyone is welcome to create an account and add to the Wiki. That's what the Wiki concept is about. The references page is big, but I doubt it has everything from this immense thread.

I think this may be one. The Lost leader Muxly may be a homage to Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines. Aside from the name, Muxly appears to have the same laugh that Muttley does.

[/ QUOTE ]

Definitely one. And you are just hitting the tip of the iceberg of the chain of references. Check out this post in another thread for a fuller summary of the currently known Wacky Races references in the new Faultline.

And there's a post from the second page of that same thread:

In Doc's TF, you fight in succession Dr. Vezzini (Vizzini, the Sicilian who you should never go against when DEATH is on the liune) and then Dr. Humperdink (the Prince). I dont remember the one before or after and whether or not they corresponded, but I guess the writer was just as bored as us at that point in the TF.

[/ QUOTE ]
Princess Bride references. Someone should go through this arc and see if either Fezzik or Inigo Montoya pop up in that same thread.

Roland- Named Malta boss. Gunslinger. For those of you literary-deprived souls out there, Roland is the main character in Stephen King's opus work The Dark Tower

Roland goes back farther than The Gunslinger. hehe.

[/ QUOTE ]

I haven't read all the posts since the one i quoted, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned.

Warren Zevon has a song called "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" or something along those lines. It's about an- i think- South African mercenary who participates in the Congo Wars is 'too good' and gets his head shot off by a CIA agent, and his ghost comes back to kill the agent, Van Owen, and supposedly inspire later revolutionaries- such as Patty Hurst (spelling?)

Great song, too, by the way.

I might just have "Dark Tower" on the brain, since I finally picked it up last year and am presently in the middle of book 5... but...

I was going through a villain arc today, I believe this is called the Cult of the Shaper arc, from Diviner Maros.

To my knowledge, the following quote is Dark Tower and CoV spoiler-free (I am only on book 5, so I don't know whether the event Maros might be alluding to is hypothetical or not).

Maros says:

"I've realized that you probably don't know how this all ends yet. I'm sorry about that. I forget these things. Ever since the tower fell, I have been at all places between two points. I forget that it's all linear to most people. Effects follow causes and causes precede effects. And I still live all those moments."

and so on.

DARK ASTORIA...

...Romero Heights _ George Romero, "Night of the Living Dead" fame.

Raimi Arcade- Sam and Ted Raimi of "Evil Dead" fame

Barca Plaza - No idea. Barca is Hannibal's last name (the guy who crossed the Alps in 14 days on elephants), but I can't see where that relates to the undead.

Dido's View - Dido was a historically- and mythologically significant woman, purportedly the founder of Carthage. Her only connection to the undead seems to be that in Virgil's "Aenid", Aeneas comes across her in the underworld and begs her forgiveness (he scorned her at the behest of Zeus, after which she killed herself). Coincidentally, Hannibal Barca's family claims descendance from a nephew of Dido.

Toffett Terrace - this is a long shot, but the only one I have: Toffett = tuffett = small grassy mound = burial mound?

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, I get Raimi and Romero obviously enough. "Dido's View" probably relates to Dido (queen of Carthage) being encountered in the Underworld in the Aeneid; her view would be of ghosts, etc.

If Toffet = Tophet then it is another term for Hell.

But I have no idea for "Barca". I tried IMDB thinking "Barca" might be a b-movie director but didn't see anything. "Moth" might refer to the The Moth Diaries but that seems like a stretch.

Anyone?

Nice work man
I have to admit...on a couple of those I was stuck pretty dumb because I never thought enough about what they referred to:
Every time I went into Grendel's Gultch,I had always thought of the Troll Grendel who was defeated by Atta, not the creature slain by Beowulf even though I read that story this year in Senior english and even watched the movie on Sci-Fi

I was also struck dumb on Challengers Technology because I never thought of the Challenger shuttle in 1986,which happens to be the same year my brother was born,on the exact day it happend. Yes,you heard me right - My brother was born the day the Challenger exploded

Ok, forgive me if some of this has been said already, there are a LOT of pages in this thread and I didn't feel like spending all night rading through them all.

Mostly a bunch of quotes from enemies and other little things all over the place...

One of the most obvious is "City of Gyros" in Galaxy City; for those who don't know, a Gyro is a greek food sometimes pronounced "Hero"...

If you've ever bothered looking at the surroundings in Kings Row (especially near the starting point in the Mayhem mission), there's a pawn shop with the "A" in pawn burnt out.. I ROFL'd when I looked up to find my villain robbing the "Pwn shop"...

In one of the Safeguard missions you have to retrieve a "Dragoon Ball". It's description in-game reads, "Legends say that if you find all 7 of the Dragoon Balls, it will summon a mighty mystical cavalryman who can grant you a wish."
A parody of the Dragonballs from the anime series "Dragonball".

At one point an enemy said to me, "Do you feel lucky, punk?".

Don't remember whether it was hero or villain -side, but I once heard a Freakshow boss say "All your base are belong to us!".

Some trolls say "Me have body by Superadine", a reference to the "body by Calvin Kline" string of advertising.

meh, that's all I cn think of at the moment.... it's late. Me brain no work more good...
