Quick update...

Bodyscaling is the only thing this game was missing to truly make this like my favorite of all games: WWF No Mercy for N64. All we really need is more faces and it's the same exact create-a-builder. Great for me, since I spent my high school years doing nothing but making memory card upon memory card of my own wrestlers, so now I can do the same in CoH.

Combined with this information about PvP and I think Issue 4 is pretty decent. The only thing I would add is a new Hollows-like Hazard Zones with contacts and new TFs for level 30s, unless they consider the 30s pretty set with the Calvin Scott TF, Sewer and Eden Trials. If they do, that'll make me a sad mayor since my contacts just won't give up story arcs right now no matter what I do.

What's wrong with taunting making a forced attack, or confuse to cause you to be unable to differentiate between friend or foe? This is exactly what happens to the NPCs you put these moves on, so why should PvP be different?

I do have to hope that pre-existing characters would be able to make use of the new body slider feature/new character artwork. Preferably a free overhaul like the free respec, but I can settle for just having it available in Icon.

Largely because I'd really like to bring my existing characters closer to concept, which means not so busty and buff.

Another astonishing revelation: The arena will also house themed conflicts that incorporate mission objectives and even bestow temporary powers onto those bold enough to enter.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oooh, fantastic!

I wonder how long until someone figures out a way to farm these for XP?

[ QUOTE ]
Even the most seemingly mundane powers will be useful in PvP battle. For example, Statesman tells us that "taunting" another hero will force them to attack you... even against their will.

[/ QUOTE ]

Argh. Well, I hope there's some measure of choice involved in the nature of the attack. I wouldn't want to be stuck Mental Blasting someone when I could be Will Dominating them.

[ QUOTE ]
Likewise, an opponent who becomes "confused" by a Controller-class hero will be unable to tell friend from foe.

[/ QUOTE ]

... how is that going to work, I wonder? All heroes appear as indiscriminate blobs? Random re-targeting of powers as they activate, so you snipe your buddy and heal your foe?

And direct from NCsoft's arists in Korea comes new costume-design elements inspired by anime and manga.

[/ QUOTE ]

Could be very, very cool, if the styles don't clash...

[ QUOTE ]
"I was so terrified that we'd produce something that wouldn't be right," says Statesman about the delay. "We designed a whole system and it just didn't cut the mustard. So it's my fault."

[/ QUOTE ]

Much respect to States here. Clearly it looked good on paper but didn't work in the playtest. It's a real headache when that happens, but you *have* to junk it and start again - you can't keep pushing it just because it seemed like a good idea.

Big thankyous to Youko for the transcript!

Not a big Anime fan. Hopefully there will be more then just Anime costume elements...

I suspect that what they mean is that your target is switched to the taunter and you can't switch to a different target. If that's the case, you'd still get to choose if, when, and how to attack but not your target.

One issue with this is going to be for support characters. Taunt the opposing empath and now they can't switch targets to heal their friends.

Wonder if this means they'll add taunt resistance to some of the inspirations and powers. Let's hope so.

This could get odd, if they force you to attack someone. Do they make you use your best attack? Worst? If you have an attack set to auto, will it use that? Will it only take attacks from the tray, so you could pull some stuff off of it, to not be forced to use it? Will it differentiate between a single target attack and AoEs? Hand Clap is an attack but is merely stun/knockdown, will it consider powers like this for forced attacks? Lot's of possibilities here.

I think the addition of the anime and manga work will greatly increase the options for hero creation and I would imagine they will be desinged to mix and match with existing art work so combination anime-present CoH heroes will be possible. Just because Paragon City is set in the US does not mean there would not be heroes from other places with different style looks.

This is the first game I have ever looked forward to PvP in. It will be fun to take on other players who can think and react to my attacks, even if I never win any of the fights the fun of the challenge is the whole point of doing it. I would bet there will be some kind of Arena ranking system for one on one and group combat.

Spectator mode would be a nice option to watch battles between lager SG's and hopefully when they can figure a way to make it work they will add it later. Too much risk of the rude player coming in and interferring in a fight uninvited since from the sound of how they have set it up once you enter the Arena area you are PvP tagged until you exit again.

They keep making the game better with every update and once they do figure out a non-combat or out of combat skill system that works the game will be nearly perfect. CoV will push it over the top.

Pretty sure he hasn't had access to his redname for 6 years.

Why has no one cited this as a reason for Scrappers to get Ninjtsu?

Oh, $target, there you are! Where were you the other day when I was having my game stolen? There's never a hero around when you need one. You've been on patrol 0 times today. There are 5,000 masks in this part of the city right now.

Because scrappers have SR with Elude which is what... 3 backflips at activation? Can't remember. It's been a long time since I had it in my build.

On topic, though, scrapper Nin would be awesome. As would scrapper energy melee and brute ice armor.

Be well, people of CoH.

Any hugs for Jack? Didn't he kind of start this whole thing?

Wow. Time warp!

And the message is oddly appropriate these days.

My opinion is that this game owes an immense debt to Jack, because his vision (in the broad sense, not the game balance sense) shaped the lore, setting and and general comic-hero (and villain) inspired nature that lie at the deepest core of its design. Others were involved in the process, but Jack was the lead designer.

I absolutely believe there came a point where the game was better off once he left. In particular, I think that part of what made this game as successful as it was had to do with how badly the implementation actually failed to translate that creative vision into game mechanics the way the original devs envisioned.

At release, CoH had incredibly broken game balance, and while a lot of heavy-handed nerfs came down to try and address that, I believe that even today we exhibit a legacy of power relative to the PvE environment that exists only because of those early design mistakes. Don't get me wrong - I personally love a lot of the ways this game's balance has been "broken" (relative to what was intended) for so long. I think the devs accidented into greatness there, creating a game that felt far more "super heroic" than they actually meant to. It did create some issues, but I tend to feel they were worth it in the long-run.

But it seemed to me that Jack took a long time to come around to the idea that some of how they missed their targets was actually a blast for a lot of players in practice. It probably wasn't just him, but he was an obvious face for what was presented to players. I think towards the end of his tenure here, he had coming around to the idea, but I think he lost a lot of good will with early efforts to bend the game back towards his/their original balance vision.

So I think he deserves a huge amount of credit for driving the design of the over-arching game world and systems as we know them, some blame for not understanding more about how to translate that vision into a game system, and yet some thanks for presiding over a team that managed to implement something so many of us have loved so much almost by accident.
