There's nothing wrong with Dark that IOs or a different primary can't solve.
Unlike something like WP, there's no great SO performance with any primary of your choice out of the box. But like WP, the set is only limited by how much INF ur willing to throw at it.
Unlike the rest of the resist sets (Fire, Elec), there is no end management built into the set, nor are there passives that give u an extra boost; so yeah Dark gets a triple whammy in terms of endurance management (costly heal, no passive, no end discount/booster). So you have to rely on your primary (Dark) or IOs to fill in that end hole.
Unlike the defense secondaries, u need a primary (swords) or IOs to give u defense to withstand hard single targets like AVs and GMs. -
Quote:U know, this could possibly be it. I see stalkers faceplant more often than dominators that spam their aoe immobilize before they have gotten their soft contols. I haven't actually stopped to look at their secondaries; instead attributing it to their low hitpoint pool.Indeed they are. And frankly, from my expearince, (BS/SR softcapped stalker and a DB/Ninja with def over 35%) they aren't as squishy as people make them out to be. Maybe the poor resistince based stalkers are that squishy, but my BS/SR was easy and cheap to softcap, and as a result is a mother to kill. And he brings MASSIVE burst and single target damage. I beat the heck out of AV's. And my DB accually has some decent AoE. He really does. Plus good defence, softcapped with one sml purp when needed, and a great heal.
However, now that u mention it, hitpoints are basically resistance. It's not a big deal for defense based sets because they ignore resists/hitpoint pools. But for resistance based secondaries, that hitpoint pool means a lot and probably explains their squishiness. -
If Spins radius were larger I could see taking Shockwave, but anything that works counter to getting mobs into that 8' blender isn't worth it in my book. Then of course WP compounds that issue with RttC needing mobs within close proximity as well.
I'd venture that Shockwave would be useful to get some breathing room while ur toon isn't IOed out. Once u have decent defenses it would probably work against the optimal performance of ur primary and secondary.
I absolutely love the Eviscerate animation and I use it all the time, even in my single target attack chain. -
Doubtful. The redraw will drive all the Sword/Kat/Claws/Blade/Spine scrappers batty (or maybe not, so I'll just speak for myself and say I only pick PPs on my weaponized Scrappers for IO muling or Physical Perfection). It may help Elec with its questionable single target damage, but I doubt the Scrapper version of Gloom is going to do much more damage than Fireblast and since it's largely a DOT, it won't benefit from crits the way Fireblast does.
-
I'm actually quite happy with most of them on both sides but think a bit more variety would be nice.
I would like a second DEF based pool for my squishies on redside despite Scorp Shield being pleasantly inconspicuous compared to poo armor and frozen armor.
Some thematic variety would be nice too; I would love a fire/fire/pyre Dom. That's definitely gonna cross over to blueside if it opens up the fire PP
I also wish there was more parity between the Brute and Scrapper *PPs. I'd love to have Physical Perfection for my /Dark Brute. I'd also love to have an AOE immobilize or AOE taunt for my /SR scrapper so entire spawns don't run off when they drop below half health. It also makes me glad that I made my Elec a Brute and not a Scrapper because the entire spawn running off when they get their endurance bar drained would just drive me crazy on a Scrapper.
Most of all though, it is the redraw that annoys me the most about *PPs and PPs in general and that's something that isn't particularly restricted to any one side. -
This is what I use:
Code:IMO it's not worth getting aid-self or elude, even when I'm fighting +2 level mobs, I have enough natural regen between hits to not miss either. Boxing/Kick should just be a pre-req for Tough/Weave. You shouldn't actually be using either! Even in my build, I hardly ever even use Swipe unless I get hit with a slow debuff or I'm leveled down. U can get a FU/Strike/Focus/Evis single target attack chain without another single target attack. -
I had a similar conundrum a while ago and I went with Claws/SR Scrapper:
- Scrapper because I wanted Physical Perfection, not just for the +recov but for the +regen so I could eventually drop Aid Self. The biggest annoyance of Aid Self on a Brute is that I can see my Fury bar dropping while healing myself. As such, I just don't play powersets that require Aid Self on my Brutes. PP also allowed me to take Weave/CJ/Stealth without running dry to help get well past the softcap with minimal IO investment.
- Claws cuz it does more damage than FSC with Follow Ups. The 2' difference with FSC is negligible. Now if the difference were 15' like Footstomp or Tremor it would be a tougher decision.
- SR cuz it's easy to get close to softcap plus u will not have to worry too much with cdf. Just don't go trying to solo Overseers surrounded by Wisps for the Rularuu Claws badge. I did that once, it was not a pleasant experience. -
I'm partial to Ice/ as one of the synergiest (I know that's not a real word, but it gets the idea across) primaries for a /kin. It's got decent AOE in the form of Ice Storm and if you have a second kin in ur team to speed boost and transference u, it will outshine all the other primaries with its T9 nuke. Also the -Recharge from Ice powers and Web Envelope from ur patron pool gives u some excellent mitigation for when ur soloing. Plus u get 2 holds for pesky bosses.
Softcapping Ice/Kin for S/L def is cheaper than dirt. Makes it quite easy to farm 0/8 if ur so inclined.
One of the issues I have with DP is the redraw, which gets especially annoying when recasting web envelope all the time. I like Fire too but it's not as cheap a softcapping build. -
The best brute powerset for AOE is Levi Mastery. Just doesn't work too well with RttC in Willpower or any secondary that ties ur survivability to being right next to the mobs. Just pair it up with a primary that doesn't cause redraw and ur golden.
-
Quote:I think ur problem with ur ice/kin might be not playing him as a melee. With some IOs you can softcap S/L/E while having devastating AOE with near perma Ice Storm with /Kin. And if ur not playing ur Kin as a melee ur sacrificing a significant amount of his power.Yeah, that seems to be my problem. The sets that are easy to level don't perform nearly as well at 50 as other combinations. However, I am of the mindset that a character isn't fun to level unless they're fun for all 50 levels.
Right now I'm probably going to make a Claws/SR or Fire/WP Scrapper heroside, and a SS/Fire Brute or a Crab villain side. I definitely want something melee for a change of pace.
As an aside, WP probably has one of the smoothest leveling/power curves of all the sets in game. -
Even if I don't follow that to the letter, I appreciate the following slotting tips:
Going from 2 to 4 GotAs gives 0.06 rec, end cost of the toggles go up 0.04, which still gives a 0.02 net increase per toggle.
Adding in 2 Mocking Beratements also gives 0.06 rec
And going for 4 Perf Shifters adds 0.01 rec
Every little bit counts so thank you! -
Without throwing purples at it and without sacrificing any more S/L Def? Other caveat: I don't want to throw any more Kin Combats into it since one set is all I can spare for this toon right now.
I have really despised DA over my course of playing the game, especially with SOs only, so I decided to give it a fair shake with IOs. Stone probably wasn't the best choice to pair it with endurance-wise, but I really needed the mitigation for such low def/res numbers.

Other tips and tricks for slotting to get better endurance conservation would also be appreciated.
TIA. -
Is there a reason why Doms don't pair Fire Cages + Bonfire? Is it because without containment the damage is too piddly?
-
Sword is definitely one of the better sets to pair it with to cover the gaping defense hole. The other option is sets with an AOE disorient to stack with OG; so Stone or EM or Mace to play it like a controller.
I've got a Stone/DA brute and for how painful it is to level, if there was any justice in the universe, it should be able to solo Posi at 50. Unfortunately it only seems to gets marginally less painful the higher level I get and the more IOs I stick in him. I'll probably be lucky to jump into a group of 52 arachnos and survive long enough to get my dark regen off. Ultimately DA has too many holes for just one offensive powerset to attempt to cover. -
or should I say work well?
I've already got a Soldier with both builds IOed out (one as a Huntsman and the other as a Bane). So I'm just curious if I can make a melee based crab. I've rolled a new one and I'm thinking of a build like this:
Code:That's a really cheapo IO build which basically gives 40%+ M/S/L defense, 45% R def and 50% S/L res and 40%+ res to the rest.| Copy & Paste this data into Mids' Hero Designer to view the build | |-------------------------------------------------------------------| |MxDz;1443;719;1438;HEX;| |78DA9D93594F135114C7EF2C3074A36081B2962E94BD05DE5C1E0C4134861631C52| |56A6CC6F6069A346D9D191279F303F8E0FA88DBAB51834B8CDB17323121EAB3F52C| |B74DD03727EDFF37F7DC73EF3DE7DC39F95BA78242DC3E29B48195AAEDBAC565C72| |E6DD7EA6EB150AF962BD2B1D66D6FC7B1ABFEBCAC4A195F71EC1B961022FDB79F9B| |C5A962A151294BA7654C6F3A76A556A96D15CFD8E52DE91D766A4DF69EAD6D4B47D| |6BC6CEB25B851AF57B3A72B5E4DBA2E0F72D26E80AF9F06858694E59072DADAF660| |6260B55129652FAE2E6F16F3764982B89E74760721D619F84744EB699A2207488AC| |E3CA16B9D718E305C062C8937018046EE9A88C2CB98D007097DAD09D1ECD0F6C859| |7F46301F133A9F13469F10624F091F603F43ED67C4D89DD109D5ECE019D1314DA60| |13059CAD9F26B68EA337421A6C447D8C6C733A6AF5B43933FCC0811860384095E85| |C907385623F082F60EBE66ECF3492F0951D090CA29D42053B7C7D821F4DC6438BCC| |A2558106658451E9E2053124CBD6CD27BE7C874E410BAC021A2528BC4C9D4C7F802| |81F6ABDDFA33647A0BA6A8CA361AA3C406538C04613449981DE7DCC171486531C45| |9C4388B186711E72CE29C459CB37807878CA84346F254B68975C2D41A23C7D820E8| |167E041CE658131E3102EFE3EACB1AE72227B8C8092E726297777D45A3F701FCCCD| |83DF98D4CA90381F1A77EEA34C24A8D89CC779AFB0AEE69E59EE61A4E2AF0E2C903| |42E6072DFE650831AD6A307D97CE9D79C8B8C7784498BDCF7840D887CB9F5387CC7| |173CC7373CC7373CC7373644A74960135C872C98C2CDFCB02DFC4025FCF025F8F09| |7E8BCA6FF137E5B8A4D3CC92C1D0F81ACD766FC20F6B9AFBC7B261B6DB4E6864593| |3DB2DDAF4F5B4FDFFF7F9146C6DE13BEF072DA05C40B9847219E50ACA55946B28D7| |518A28CDCFEDD5E1A318D73194E3282750FA31BE3BE869613F0650822821946E943| |04A0F4A046518650FA5F90727C507CD| |-------------------------------------------------------------------|
I'm not sure about the epic pool picks and the annoyance and performance degradation due to redraw. I'm tempted to drop Web Envelope and Shatter Armor and incorporate WAWG and Bayonet which has better DPS but again I'm not sure how bad the redraw would be; anyone tried it in a crab context? -
You ever try using the second build slot to try out a melee crab? I'm building one right now from scratch and was wondering if anyone else had dabbled in it.
-
/Thermal for TFs if ur gonna utilize it to its full potential.
/Dark for regular PvE though; especially solo. There's something to be said for hitting 2 buttons, sending the prince in on aggresive and watching groups of mobs just melt. -
1. ur ditching 20% res and 10% def for ur minions who're gonna be the ones staying in melee.
2. ur going with Hover to be at range hoping DS and Ember is enough healing for ur melee minions.
3. ur skipping Fearsome Stare which is a great alpha suppressor and defense enhancer for ur whole demon team.
4. ur not taking Provoke, so this isn't even a tankermind build so ur pets will be getting the brunt of attacks.
5. Shadow Fall is woefully underslotted for covering ur minions resist holes to energy/neg/psi.
There's probably more but ur formatting is giving me a headache.. -
You want recharge, especially for /Dark and it's gonna be a beast even without taking any of the -res attacks. I know; contrary to popular opinion, once u factor in the falloff from going against higher level mobs, the -res from the attacks really isn't that much considering everything else u need to throw out. Besides, Tar Patch + pet attacks is plenty for that and will be recharging almost every 30 seconds. Howling Twilight every 60 seconds, Web Cocoon + Petri Gaze being able to hold bosses and all wrapped up with your softcapped S/L defense. Shadow Fall + the 4 damage mitigation pet IOs + Maneuvers to give ur pets a total of about 20% positional def and 40% resists to Eng/Neg/Psi to cover the only resistance hole they have.

It still doesn't change the fact that for the majority of the game Emp is just meh. I'm sure there are similar situations in which the rest of the powersets shine while still being more 'special' than Emp like Dark turning the user into a controller while flooring to hit and giving -res while Kin caps group damage and makes AVs hit like kittens. So you need 2 Emps in a group to even notice a wow factor from them, which kinda proves my point.
-
Empathy's undiscovered (by the unwashed masses) and untapped (by the unwashed masses) potential that makes it on par with all the other sets but differently is just a variation of the unique snowflake syndrome.
-
Nope, I haven't noticed that people restrict their powerset opinions to ATs at all. Empathy is universally pretty awful no matter what the AT, especially compared to some of the newer equivalent options like Pain Dom. And unless you're Ghost Widow, Mind is equally meh with the only use of it that comes immediately to my mind is having an overly easy time for the last part of the LRSF.
Otherwise, pretty much all the other controller secondaries and defender (I think; not as familiar with Defs as with Corrs) primaries are better picks than Emp although TA does seem to fall behind the rest a bit as well.
Once the premise of your theory makes no sense, it's pointless addressing the rest of it. -
@Donna_
It seems to me that if you're ripping through +4/8x at the moment with your setup, another setup would just be something different to do to interrupt the boredom since a few more or less seconds for each group isn't going to make or break the farm
Also, the Ice/Kin builds came about because we came back from Warhammer 2-3 weeks before AE boss farms went the way of the dodo. Took us about a week to make and IO out those 2 farming toons and then we ran 52 and 53 boss farms with 'em, so that's what the damage was geared towards (54 boss groups were hit or miss even with 50% S/L/E def; definitely needed a tank for those). I'm guessing for current +4/8x missions, it may be overkill and hence the extra wait time on cooldowns may not offer the optimal speed.
The problem with Fire/ is:
1. Inferno doesn't do as much damage as Blizzard and gets no additional benefit for it like a shorter recharge time or no end crash. So you're pretty much stuck with the same cooldown factor as Ice/ but with less AOE damage.
2. Rain of Fire and Ice Storm damage is comparable since Ice Storm gets to use an additional damage proc from Impeded Swiftness that RoF (or RoA) doesn't have access to.
3. Cones are not the best attack to use as a /Kin due to the necessity for melee range (which is why I left out Frost Breath as well).
Fireball should help equalize Fire's AOE DPS and give you more to do between nukes if the other stuff like spamming Immobilize to keep the mobs together, spamming Transfusion to keep you up, Transference (which should have 158.6% total acc from bonuses) for end and keeping Siphon Speeding yourself for the recharge isn't enoughIt's still worth a try to see how it goes though.
Hmm, now I'm wondering if getting 2 Plant/Kin/Ice trollers might not be better for Confusion + Containment + Fulcrum Shift + Ice Storm
On the plus side, there's plenty of combos for you to try -
If there was ever a downside to Bots/Traps it would be boredom.
-
I'm not convinced. Fistfull of Arrows is piddly S/L damage; you will note that I didn't even include Frost Breath in my evaluation of Ice/ despite it doing considerably more damage than FoA. Explosive Arrow ends up decreasing your AOEDPS due to KB out of AOE coverage.
Blizzard is only overkill if both Ice/Kins use it at the same time and if you read my initial post, I already stated that they are alternated.
There is less gimping in the "as defensive as SD against S/L/E" Corr build than there is in a Elec/SD build (despite the 3 added slots in Boxing). In fact, it's a very team friendly build. My duo partner quit to go back to Warhammer and I let that account expire or else I'd dig his build up for ya; actually I'll see if I can recreate it in mids.
Pretty sure this is close to it:
