Is anyone playing fire/earth?

I was playing around in mids' from my netbook yesterday, as is my habit, and I found myself messing with a fire/earth dom build and going HMMMM. Lot of stun, good soft control otherwise, solid aoe damage and (seemingly) not too tough to build to perma if you want given its diversity of power types.

I actually was kind of torn between trying to make a perma build and trying to softcap its positionals with the goal of living in melee with both auras running. Perma's preferable obviously but also a lot more expensive.

Anyway, is anyone playing one of these at a high level? How's it go?

@Dysc, on virtue:
Virtue blues: Overnight (DP/MM), Kid Ridiculous (FC/rad), Panorama (Ill/time)
Virtue reds: Block Party (SS/SD), Goldcrush (earth/fire), Deadwire (claws/elec), Snowcrush (ice/kin)

I love my fire/earth. I tend to have a number of alts that I play depending on my mode. On some rare occasions I will find a build that is so much fun that I put everyone else on the shelf and run that one build up to 50. Fire/earth is one of those builds for me. I went for a combo of defense and recharge. Didn't have the funds to go perma but he has a good amount of global recharge. Would not recommend getting both auras though. Hot feet is all you need. The endurance drain on that is more than enough to handle. So enjoy! It will become a lot more fun as you pick up your melee powers and pets.

Moifus sums to up very nicely. Fire/earth is a nasty combo, and full of SMASH. While it is nice for perma, I do not think it is super major as some other builds. I would shoot more towards capping S/L in your build, which can be very easy with not a huge inf sink on it. Also indeed hot feet is all you need, by far the better aura...also you can hit hard on end badly with that.

Still rock the fire/earth dom, you will regret it.

I just started one of these myself, and poking around in Mids a bit, I see that slotting is going to be far more of an issue than any other character I have. By "slotting" here I mean, "I keep running out of slots no matter how I try to build this combo." Are people not 6-slotting most of the attacks?

I do believe on my build I have most of my attacks six slotted. Currently I am not able to pull the build for you since I am at work.

I am a believer that on fire/earth you will want to use frankenslotting in the teens onwards to accommodate as much end redux as you can squeeze in.

I went the Frankenslot route with 5 slots in most of my attacks and managed to be pretty effective that way. Wasn't able to do anything fancy with set bonuses (mostly just a little things to compensate for small reductions in accuracy compared to my "normal" slotting), but still enough to solo groups made for three or four.

Here is my build. I am level 50, but I ran up on cheap frankenslotted IOs. I havent taken the time to purchase any of the nice IOs in the build I'm about to post, but eventually I will (after I cross over with GR). But, this is the exact level-up order I used and the exact number of slots I used.

I 5-slotted and 6-slotted all of my attacks.

Is there a reason why Doms don't pair Fire Cages + Bonfire? Is it because without containment the damage is too piddly?

Wait, when did Bonfire start doing Containment damage?

Probably for the same reason a lot of Controllers don't pair them....In order to keep the mob inside Bonfire's radius you have to keep spamming Fire Cages...that eats away at your end bar pretty quick.

Well, at least that's MY reason for not doing it. I don't see a whole lot of Fire Controllers or Dominators who DO combine them, so perhaps my reasoning has merit? Or maybe it's the piddly damage thing.

I have a lvl 50 Fire/Earth Dom that is perma-dom. I do like him but he doesn't have a whole lot of AoE punch. I have the AoE Immob., the Fissure power (not the one where you jump in the air PBAoE power, the other one) and that's it....well I have the AoE blast from the Mace Mastery APP.

He's fun to play and he was/is my 'farmer' to farm things with until I get my Claws/SR brute up to 50 and IO'ed.

Edit:

And yeah as others have mentioned it is a pretty endurance-intensive build/combo. I went for all recharge mostly...I do not have Hot Feet or Mud Pots (which was one of the reasons I made the combo but found out that putting all the dmg procs in the 2 powers was 'not worth it' in the long run). I used a good 3-4 respecs on this toon trying to get things right. I probably could be better in defense numbers but...not going to touch it right now....it's 'good enough' for me at this point. With Hasten up (which is perma I think or close to it) I have 203% rchg bonus.

I rolled one of these up recently, and so far is really fun. Sucks end like crazy, but I see a ton of potential with it.

This is the build I will be aiming for. Think I have a decent handle on the end use, perma-hasten and perma-dom. Not capped on defense, but @30% s/l/melee is good enough. I could still go with Mace Mastery to cap, but I think the boost in damage from Soul Drain and the end boost from Dark Consumption are more to my liking.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

After letting mine sit for a while, I whipped up a build in Mids that I like, but it also doesn't really seem to play to the "hang out in melee" strengths until around level 30 (after Seismic Smash).

I was wondering if it was a worthwhile tactic to work on a "ranged" build prior to 30, then respec into a more melee oriented focus?

Oh, for giggles, here's the build in question. I don't mess around with Purples, but it's darn near capped to S/L and has a pretty decent amount of recharge.

with what you have to play with as far as fire/earth goes, I would aim more at an AoE focus. At least that is the way I am going with it. your only real ranged attack is hurl boulder, which isn't particularly awesome.

However, I am making sure I take the initial hold, making it useful, keeping a couple ST attacks for bosses and going AoE heavy for the rest. Soul Drain then cages and tremor and fissure and a damage aura should clear mobs quick as can be. Was considering taking both damage auras, but that is so much end use it is terrible.

My only real conundrum is my PPP. I like dark, some strong tools in there. But, power sink is nice, and so is scorpion armor. Decisions decisions

I've got a Fire/Earth dom I've been enjoying quite a bit lately. He's still in the 30s, but the damage is glorious solo or on small teams and I love having a second single-target hold in Seismic Smash. Currently, I'm just built like a blapper (I've only taken Char, Hot Feet, Flashfire, and Imps from the primary so far), but will probably respec into Cinders as well, and may consider taking one of the immobilizes (if for no other reason than to help with AVs on teams). Once I put together the cash to IO him out for more recharge, he should be monstrously effective.

I'm split between taking the Widow or Mu patron pool; I know that I want another endurance recovery tool so that I can afford to run Hotfeet (and potentially Mud Pots) more often. Power Sink recharges three times as fast as Dark Consumption, but Soul Drain's damage buff is very tempting. I'm waiting to see just how much of a difference proper IOing makes to my endurance drain before I decide for sure.

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.

Really!? I have no issues with mine and end at all, although I learned to manage end on all my doms.
