    AR/DEV. Why Not?

that said, different people find different stuff fun- play one and see how you like it.
I need to save this, because it pretty much hits home and is straight to the point.

You can get a million players trying to explain how it should be played, what you need to do because your lacking X power or that you need to LRN2PLAY..

But at the end of the day the reality is what Nethergoat said.

All this is game is math surrounded by Pixels to create an image to represent that math.. The math has been figured out. You can pretty much look it up on the wiki or using Mids and of course these forums.

I will say that AR Traps is tons better simply because you can obtain defense cap much easier. You can calculate all the DPS you want but the player that dies less will out DPS the guy that does massive damage and dies after every nuke. There just comes a point where you run out of inspirations to make a ress. All that dying, ressing, ress stun, resting adds up time wise. While your trying to get back into the fight the AR Traps guy has been there all along.

Traps is what Dev should have been.

  3. The wheel has already been invented. There is nothing that someone with understanding of the game mechanics and Mids cannot create.

Even when you post something you get players that disagree about your build including the OP that was asking for help in the first place.

As mentioned already even PvP builds can be figured out if you have the patience.

I posted a build I thought was decent and someone else improved upon it and reposted his build. I was then able to rework the build once again and improve it. It's a 2 way street.
  4. Read through several pages, might have missed if someone said this already.

I think it's the kid factor really. Young player thinks the whole ninja stealth thing is cool. Look at me I'm a L33T ninja.. They run up behind the boss most of the time attacking before anyone is ready or expecting. Then they end up taking a dirt nap because they are not Defense Capped.

Sadly you see that enough you start to think every stalker is just a kid or a player who just doesn't have a clue.

But on the flip side, honestly I never seen a someone say don't pick up the stalker. But I would imagine there are many things I have not seen in the game. I think the Stalker effect is more magnified when the team is also lacking. If you have 8 players on a team and only 2 are defense capped then you start to see the usual Stalker attacks unannounced and then everyone running to help him. Healer dies from Heal aggro and then the chain reaction starts as players drop like flies leaving maybe the 2 defense capped players to mop up.. Of course sometimes they can get even overwhelmed and drop eventually.

On the other hand if you have a decent amount of player Defense capped, let us say 4 out of a group of 8. Then it really doesn't matter what the rest of the team is setup since the reality is those 4 are holding up the rest of the team by taking on the aggro.

I would clearly comment in your LFT that your Defense capped or what not. Make people know your set up decently. I always mention I am defense capped if I feel I am competing for a spot on a team that I want to be on to do something with. EG TF or SF. This way the TL knows I am a Healer or whatever and defense capped as well.

Personally I like when the Stalker brings a boss or some pesky mob down to near death or wipes the annoyance out completely. I am pretty sure there are many mobs players wish a stalker was around to AS.
  5. Was looking to possibly update my Dark Electric. Overall I have no complaints.. I have him doing +1 +8 with no issues. But not being at defense cap I have to constantly keep an eye out for Darkest Night and make sure it is on and on the right mob.

I was looking to see if I could look into a few powers to up his DPS a bit maybe. I have the EPIC Thunder Strike but the KB can be a pain sometimes.

I was looking at Dark because of the DPS addition as well. But having Power Sink up every 51 seconds really helps out.. Compared to the 2 minutes I would have to wait for Dark Consumption.

Overall I am complaining about nothing really.. Just looking to be greedy

    Traps/DP halp

This a rough build.. And just created for slotting powers to see what you can get..

After you finish tweaking it up a bit.. You can without a doubt get Smash, Letha,l Ranged, and Melee and probably Energy and Negative Defense capped.

I think that maybe you should consider Time Bomb as well. I will explain in a but why.

I have a Sonic Traps which is pretty much similar in concept. I would look at this build with this concept of play in mind. Seeker drones you can maybe 1 slot with just recharge or 2 slot with recharge and range.

What I see you doing is dropping a seeker drone as close as possible to the mobs to gain aggro. Then run in and drop a Poison trap followed by Time bomb, Which is then followed by Trip mine. At this point you can let loose with the AOE attacks of DP. Time bomb though slow to go off can usually be placed while poison trap is taking effect. Time Bomb without a doubt is a big BOOM.. Though it can be tough sometimes because all the interrupts make it tough to place.. I find it easier to place Trip mines. Basically Your riding the defense cap and just laying down a bunch of AOE attacks.

I do it with Sonic Traps. Hail of Bullets is a nice AOE to add in with all those explosions.. I would build up for defenses first when possible. So I would slot a defense power over a DPS power when you have to make a choice.

If you can get Defense capped early you can just lay down trip mines until the build fleshes out a bit better.

The second build is my Sonic Traps for comparison.. Really all I do with him is Seeker drones and then move in with Trip mine, poison trap, trip mine, Siren song, Trip mine. I can do +1 +8 with him and pull 2 full groups at a time.

Bah To Hit check does make a difference. Plus I just noticed the recharge for Power sink is much lower..

Okay sorry for wasting thread space here..
  8. I currently have Epic Pool Power sink I was wondering if someone has any insight with Dark Consumption as far as Endurance recovery goes. I know with Power Sink I can get a full bar of endurance off a a group of mobs about 5 or 6.

I have been using mids to compare some info, but I would really appreciate if someone with Dark Consumption could give some insight if they value it for endurance recovery..

Level 32 at 27% Defense, I am assuming SO atm. I created a mock build and was able to obtain 28%. So your pretty darn close number wise.

I had FF Gen 6 slotted, Weave 5 slotted and Maneuvers 4 slotted. If you 6 slotted each with SOs you would be at 28.3. So your in the ball park defense wise.

I think at this stage of the game all you pretty much should be doing is have the pets attack as you run in to drop Poison trap.. Or set up poison traps and followed by caltrops so poison traps goes off as the mobs charge in to attack after you command pets to attack and the caltrops help keep them at bay a bit..

You just don't have the Defenses atm to take a alpha hit. I consider Mastermind late bloomers. You will have some defense caps before 41, but picking up Scorpion shield at 41 is pretty much a big turning point.. It is at this point many of your Defenses cap out just by slotting SOs..

So I think the build is good. I'm assuming you have what I mentioned. Your tactics for this level are off though..

This is what I am assuming..

Honestly you don't need it. If you look up some of the threads on hell on earth you will also see you get mixed responses.. Some say slot for recharge others slot for procs..

Swap out seeker drones for Hell on Earth and swap out crack whip for Seeker Drones.. I like Seeker drones for just taking the alpha..

I drop Seeker Drones and then follow them in with a Provoke, Poison Traps and Trip mine..

  12. ANYTHING is better then what they have now..
  13. First off, do you have that kind of game money for that build ? Many purple sets in there.. Your talking probably around a billion or more.

Either way I would look at this thread

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=227434

Swap out Robots and pick your demon powers.. If you have the money Raterro did a good job. If your a cheapskate or broke then look at mine..

    AHH... Apology accepted.

Look I don't know what you know or don't know.. Here is my thought on it. Traps along with a a basic build of tough, weave, combat.. Etc.. Pretty much the build I posted gets you to Defense cap.. You can use that build with anything Arch Type that can use traps and get defense cap.

At that point you could beat mobs up with a spoon. Would it be slow ? Yea.. But it would be very difficult to die. Without out a doubt the 3 pets do increase your DPS output.. I should do a comparison to see what the difference is between the 2 DPS wise.

What I did was, I leveled my Robot Traps to 50 and did a bit of petless soloing.. Basically simulating what it would be like as a petless mastermind. I didn't have the 3 attacks that whips does. instead I used some temp powers.. Pistol, baseball bat and Ritki gun. Without a doubt it was a slower run. But I can tell you reassuringly that without a doubt many players who do not do Defense cap could not handle the +1 +7 runs.

Further it could be possible for my build to out DPS another player who is not at defense cap simply because the player could incur more deaths or is likely to incur more deaths. Again it isn't fact just some street science. I am pretty sure many have been on teams where the same 2 or 3 people end up taking dirt naps repeatedly.

Plus at the end, I have about 14 to 16 lvl 50s total from both sides. Sort of trying to spice up the game for myself.
  15. Are you looking for PvP or PvE.. If you say both in one build I do not think it could be done to point where you would like it.. I think one or the other will be lacking.

If your looking for PvE and are looking for Defenses and get Defense cap. Then Look up Raterro or even my name and see where I posted in Raterro thread.. We were discussing Robot Traps.

Raterro build is high end and my build is low end. Both have defense caps but I don't have billions to spend like he does his is higher dps because of what he can afford.. So with that said, take the build swap out Robots and put in demons and your done.

    So.....yea.....

perhaps there is a reason you receive cricket noises when you pose your crazy ball-less questions.

The scenario usually plays out something like this...

Ball Less - "So. What do you guys think about my new toon?"

Random Person - "Uh I don't know, what did you do?"

Ball Less - "I took a perfectly good MM and I then grabbed a scalpel and removed my own testicles! SaaaaaWWEEEEETTTT!"

    Nerd rage moar ??

I thought you were gonna give some insight on whip attacks or something.. Instead you post that rant ? And for what ? Just to rant and cry ? You were better letting the thread drop off the page then foot stomping the way you did..
  17. Sometimes I feel they should force people to automatically set to LFT so they consciously have to turn it off instead. More then not you have many people LFT all over the game but never really put themselves LFT. Or have a button that allows you to personally set if you want to be LFT when your not in a team. Every time I log in, it is the first thing I do is put myself LFT. Even my comments says always LFT.

Lets hope it does get introduced with GR or I16 as someone posted.

So darn true.. It took me about 3 hours all said and done to do a respec several nights ago.. It was just a very frustrating hassle. I kept looking up at my clock and just getting annoyed with myself for the amount of time I had to waste just to respec.

  21. All I can say is, it should be working.. I see it working all the time. The only issue I can see is at lower levels you nothing really to back it up.. Once you get Trip mine and the 2nd upgrade for your pets that open the door to AOE attacks. Then you can simply run in Poison Trap, Pets start to attack, Trip mine.. Many dead bad/good guys. Until then its more of a quick way to start your attack on Longbow Neutralizers ( hate those guys along with gunslingers ) or other pain in the backside mobs. It's almost like you get to throw the first punch in a fight every time

As long as this is possible, a debate at min maxxing is the equivlent of deciding which road you want to take from Los Angeles to get to San Francisco... the direct route or the scenic; both will get you there, but which will you have more fun driving?

It all boils down to personal preference.

    Good info none the less.
Your absolutely correct.. Your making up for what I missing..

I have a 50 Robot Force Field. Which I would consider is "My Old Build" since I never understood defense ( Not saying you don't. I just didn't get it and happen to go another route by luck ) I went the route of healing my pets.. So what I wasn't doing in one direction I make up with healing the pets. Again I was lucky, I just built to what I thought worked and it just happen to work out.

But I am in the process of respecing yet again, to more of a tanker mind approach because it is just working well for me. I do think the resistance heal approach is good for someone who likes to really control his pets.. CoV came out 1 year after CoH came out I think, Mastermind was my first real toon on villain side.. I think I just got tired of trying to control the pets too much. And that is where I think I ran into issues where I wanted more control options over the pets.. Which in turn got me annoyed ( for the lack of a better term ) because I couldn't or they just didn't have any. Personally I wish they would allow you to break down the command even further. So you can determine what Stay, Defense and Aggressive mean to you. But of course that is a whole other thing..
  23. Resistance limits:http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Limits

    Soft Cap Defense explained: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=185167

Towards bottom of page for Bodyguard mode:http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Mastermind

Lets just assume you have 50% resistance across the board. Now lets assume since you went resistance you couldn't max out your defense.. Common sense tell us if your building up in one direction you will not have enough to go in another direction. But lets assume your crafty enough to get 25% defense, again across the board..

So you have 50% resistance and 25% defense..

Lets use the example given in the bodyguard link. it's round numbers and easy to figure out.. Bodyguard mode is going to give you 40 points of damage out of 100 point damage attack. Your resistance will take away half of that.. So your down to 20 points of damage..

So lets say a equal level minion is going to do 20 points of damage if he connects with a hit on you..

The defense thread I linked says at 25% defense a minion has basically a very good chance to hit you once out of every 4 swings and good probability to hit you twice out of 5 swings.. For argument sake we will use the lower 1 out of 4.

So again we break it down.. Every 4th swing your getting 20 points of damage.. with bodyguard mode and 50% resistance and 25% defense..

Your fighting 6 equal level minions.. So your taking 120 points of damage every 4th swing. 6 x 20 = 120..

Now lets reverse this.. Your at 45% defense cap and I will say 10% resistance.. Both across the board..

So now each minion when they connect will hit you for 36 points of damage. 100 points damage minus bodyguard gives you 40 minus 10% resistance = 36..

Each minion at 45% defense has a 1 in 13 chance to hit you..

    So 6 minions at after 13 swings hit you for 216.. 6 x 36 = 216..

Lets say each swing takes 1 second..

    In 13 seconds..

45% defense 10% resistance you get hit for 216 points of damage..

25% defense 50% resistance you get hit for 360 points of damage.

In 10 seconds my trip mine and bots would have killed every minion..

I didn't even get into fighting +2 bosses, because simply the numbers would be much higher and at a lower defense you would be getting hit much more then 1 in 4...

At 25% AV's would 1 shot your tier 1 pets. Which would then result in you getting even more damage because less pets to divide bodyguard mode with.. A second hit by a AV would probably kill your tier 2 pets.. I think at this point your pretty much in a bad place.

I cannot tell you how many times my pets have died and I just stood there resummoning my pets while being attack by 10 or 15 mobs.. Do I get hit.. Of course.. Do I eat some greens and a purple to make sure. Of course. Do I not bother even summoning the pets and just keep spamming Trip mine and Poison Traps until I cleared out a few.. I sure do..

End results I do not need my pets to survive. I need my pets to do more damage.. That is it.. Otherwise I could solo slowly by just using the Traps set powers and no pets.

But you do not need me to tell you all of this.. Test it yourself..

Bring up your combat monitor and monitor all your defenses.. Get yourself to the 25% defense range ( Eat a purple luck to boost your defenses ) and go find a even con mob or a bit higher.. For now put the pets on passive and get the aggro. See how many times he hits you.. Then while fighting the same mob eat another purple to bring your defenses to 45% and see how much you get hit then.. You do not need to do this 100x.. Just enough until you get the point that you will see a lot of misses once your at 45% ..

I would try to find a melee type NPC since smash and lethal are the easiest defenses to raise.
  24. Just another comment. I am noticing if I tell the pets to stay behind me a distance, where they are required to run in to fight, that they do less running around and are pretty much on auto attack. Where as if I start pointing them to mobs to fight I keep having to point them to the next mob or they just stand there..

I can tell you that sometimes I try to summon my lost pets during a fight out of sight when possible . But I also want to upgrade them first before I send them back in.. Sometimes the pets will run in and attack and gain aggro before I can put them on passive. When I am successful though I can summon the pets and buff them without them getting aggro.

I notice that when fighting higher con mobs plain non upgraded pets just seem to get destroyed much faster.

I'm guessing the OP is trying to do the same..

I usually SPAM passive as I summon the pets and hope it works.
