  1. Necro Storm because most of the pets are melee and between hurricane and mist and maneuvers it will be helpful defense wise to keep them alive.

You could go Thermal with Necro but then that would leave Storm for demons. Since many of the pets for demons are ranged or more mixed at least I can see it causing an issue for you.

I just think that Necro Storm will sit better then Demon Storm from game mechanics perspective when combined with your declaration of choices.

    Most survivable

    @OP
As you mentioned, anything defense capped with some resistances and I would also say regen to get your health up during the time the mob(s) miss.

The next thought would be if your doing 8/4 setting or fighting AVs or both. As an example to this my Robot FF Mastermind is defense capped along with the pets as well when buffed. But that is all I have going for me. I can solo 4/8 settings with the pets but I can't kill an AV. The AV also can't kill me. In the end we are at a stalemate both walking away annoyed. I have no debuffs to bring down his regen, defenses, resistances, nothing.

But on the other hand my Robot Traps Mastermind can do 4/8 settings and kill AVs. Of course I am not just relegated to just my Robot Trap Mastermind, all my Traps based characters can do just that.

So if your just looking to do 4/8 setting you need defenses just not to get hit much. You need some substantial DPS to clear out the mobs. Now it can be pure just massive DPS or moderate with the assistance of debuffs.

The issues come into play when your just doing average damage and even when defense capped and your regen on top of everything else is real low as well. Basically your not regenerating enough hit points back during the misses to be survive. I notice this type of an issue when I am being lazy and don't drop a triage beacon. I basically end up getting several hits sneak in and I end up poping 2 or 3 greens really fast to make up for the damage loss because I have learned if I just let it sit there I end up getting another hit which takes me.

I think that is another issue, since your fighting SO MANY mobs on a 4/8 setting sometimes you are subjected to that lucky chance to hit mechanism much more. End result 20 to 25 mobs trying to attack you and missing has a real good chance of having this activating with many mobs getting hits in all around the same time.

I also feel you need some type of damage mitigation in the form of some sort of aoe hold, immobilize, Knockdown or whatever. I think these types of powers extremely help in killing that massive hit streak as well. I know there are times again with my trap toons that the mobs just seem to go nuts sneaking hits in and it almost becomes a feeding frenzy in which I am the food. So as soon as I see something like this occurring I drop a poison traps with a lock down proc and immediately quells the room and gives me some breathing room to regroup. A usual combo for me with this is Poison traps followed by trip mine and some other AOE attack. If it doesn't kill off many mobs at least it sends them running for a bit.
  3. I can attest to DP Traps..

I have a DP / Traps IO'ed for Positional defense cap. Really fun toon.
  4. Between makos bite IO and Thunderstrike and the standard defense powers you will be able to obtain range defense cap. Add in Hover along with Aid Self and you have a pretty nice self contained toon. Energy secondary really offers a nice spread for IOs choices. I have an Arch Energy which this works well for. Only difference is I use a jet pack and have super speed with a stealth IO slotted.

In cave missions solo I start out in the larger rooms and fly above and fight from that vantage point leverage the range defense. I then work from that area out. This way I always have a high ceiling area to fall back to.
  5. BAF is straight forward not much issues there.

Lam can be a pain depending on the secondary you have running. Traps, Dark, Trick Arrow I can see being useful during the canister/crate phase. For me running during that phase is not much of an issue because of being capped without pets. So having a stealth proc in super speed affords me the ability to run in and drop a poison trap followed FFG and the rest. Of course I usually just follow along with my other pet which is the guy playing the Tank or Brute and make his job easier by dropping down my trap toys.

Once you get the 2 bumps in levels it makes everything much easier though. Purples are reds and reds are orange. Instead of everything being Purple and red cons.

I no longer suggest spending money (and your time is worth something) on a power set that inevitably leaves someone feeling gimped at 50.

If you stubbornly insist (it will be all right) etc, and/or don't intend to play this set as a main character, then skip everything that breaks your flow.. Powers like tripmine and timebomb and even smoke grenade and webnade, worthless really. They slow you down, trip you up trying to use them, and break your rhythm during combat. Which leads to faceplants all on its own trying to use that crud. Caltrops helps reduce incoming dps (a little bit) so that's all right. Gun drone is a bit of all right, but it's still annoying to have to re-summon it for so much time and endurance to have it vanish again after 2-3 attacks? Warshade pets might be worth summoning, Gun drone is not.

Good powers would be Caltrops, which is still lackluster compared to other sets, and Taser, which when slotted up and Hastened can be stacked on a boss. The rest is either junk though I have some because you can only get 5 power pools and I wanted to slot them up as set mules, or it actually makes you worse during play by having them. TripMine/TimeBomb.

ED gutted devices. Incarnating helped bring it back up to normal blastery type fun, stealthNerf took it away again. 700 million inf and 3 weeks work. Pssst away.
What stealth nerf I looked all over and read the update. This is the only thread I see on this.

Nothing is going to exactly match your character because no one knows your play style but you.

Archery and AR are very much the same even down to DPS type. The only thing is Archery has a higher accuracy inherit. But nonetheless what you need to understand that all the primaries are all the same. All have AOE, PBAOE, Ranged attacks ( quiet obvious ). The only difference is the secondary effect that each power has. So Fire is going to put out some more DPS then AR or Archery because of fire damage type.

But at the end of the day when your level 50 with IOs and incarnate slotted doing PvE content how much more damage is a similarly IO slotted Fire going to do over your toon persay. Is it going to be some large numbers that will make you look pitiful in the wake of his massive destruction ? Of course not.

All you need to do is up load any */Device or */Device/Munition build into mids and replace the first powers with archery. Disregard the levels of where they are picked for the moment and just make sure they are slotted according to what you like.

I am more then positive that the Retrofitting AR Device thread has a decent amount of Device/Munition builds.

The one thing your not expressing or stating is if you want or understand what defenses are and if you want them.

End result with a Device type toon you don't have much to work with. It is Either Defense or Recharge. Yes there is DPS but it is obvious if we both put out the same damage for an attack but I have more recharge I will out DPS you.

Most of your device builds are going to be Ranged capped ( which is what I have and favor ) or recharge with Aid Self.

So if you don't understand something from the game mechanics ask. Otherwise between those 20 some odd builds pull something out and post it with what your trying to do.

Example I seen someone post I went with defenses for my build place 10% defenses across the board and thought he was okay. After it was explained what defenses are and how they work, he came back with something more to what he was looking to do. Some people are just making Tanks/Brutes/Scrappers just to be fire defense capped so they can run farm missions only. Again all depends on what your mind set is and what your looking to achieve with this toon.

Those are just the 5 threads started on this very page you just made your thread about Device. One is about Archery Device. I'm pretty sure between all those threads and the links provided within those threads you are bound to find something you like.
  10. I'm more then positive if you do a search for "robot traps" or "traps" you will find more defense cap builds then you can "shake a stick at" ( what that means I don't know, just sounded right ).

Robot Traps is one of the most popular builds.

I just went back 8 pages and found a robot trap thread on each page with builds.

What you need to know is Defense Cap

    http://dechskaison.blogspot.com/2011...important.html

And if you know that then you just inspect the builds posted and take one you like.

Nutshell Robot Traps builds all are the same. Except either your going to rely on your protector bot to obtain defense cap or your going to cap out without the need of your pets. Your ancillary or epic is your choice and should have no bearing on obtaining defense cap.
  11. Robot Traps

I would definitely say some sort of melee pets. So zombie and Ninja. Storm Ninja does seem to fit thematically.

You probably didn't want it to sound like "I'm too lazy to post a build and figure stuff out so you do it for me." But it sort of did.

Post a build and let us see what you got.

What you think is decent others might think sucks.

    Or

You just might have the best build out there..

Make us feel like your willing to come half way.
  13. I think you need to post a build to get an idea of how your working a Robot Traps mastermind.

If your defense capped you can place these items at will. If not then your probably going the Blaster Device route which is only placing one at the beginning of a fight, which is why I can understand why you rarely use it.

Post a build so we get an idea of where your coming from.

Okay I must be getting confused between you knowing the "ups and downs" and wanting to know the disadvantage of it. To me the "down" part sounds somewhat similar to disadvantage or at least incorporates that into the meaning.

As you mentioned this was a solo build it really does not matter what you pick or not pick from Device.

But I will say this. Unless MIDs is wrong Cloaking Device is superior to Stealth, which includes endurance use. I think that is the whole point behind it. Also that whole smoke and stealth with time bomb / trip mine is called Toe bombing.

One (or more) mines laid away from the main minefield/killing zone, to which you can retreat if pressed is called a safety mine. A phrase coined by poster Sailboat.

I think you need to decide if your going for recharge, defense, damage or whatever and then post your build so people can clearly comment on it.
  15. Pretty much each blaster primary is similar in concept. Meaning each one has AOEs, PBAOEs and Range attacks. The secondary effects is what makes them different if anything. But at the end of the day a lvl 50 build is going to bring you the same results regardless if your a fire device or an assault rifle device. I have never turned away or been turned away because of the powers I picked. I can't even recall the last time I was on a team that didn't pick up someone because of their power choice. If they wanted a ranged attack player they didn't care what powers they were as long as it was range. Today with IO's you can pretty much fix any deficiencies an AT might have and more.

I posted several links in this post related to electric device. I would suggest you go and read those threads to get a better understanding of the device set and about defense cap and such.

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=260804

    COH Character Builder

    http://www.cohplanner.com/

Read that stuff download the builds and look at what you like. Swap out the primary for DP and post it up for inspection. Either way the links have probably 20 to 30 builds for you to choose from.
  16. I think it would be nice if they just made double choice to powers instead of making a new secondary. Basically 2 powers to choose from. This would bring life to old toons. It would also allow players to slot Inventions they currently couldn't to allow for a different types of builds. It would also open the ground to making new toons or really have a different spin on a secondary build.
  17. Today only Masterminds and SO players benefit from Force Field. Other then that anyone who is IO'ed for defense cap might only benefit if doing a Trial which is tougher due to several already mentioned reasons. I have done every Task Force, Strike Force and Trial without a bubbler and never was in a position where I wish we had one. But then again about 95% of my toons are either capped for positional, typed or both.

I think Force Field along with Device is just one of those old sets that really need a secondary option for newer and older players. Basically double powers to choose from so as not to tamper with that silly "cottage rule".
  18. Read this and go Ohhhh, Ahhhhh

    http://dechskaison.blogspot.com/2011...important.html

But honestly this info is game breaking. Read it, re-read it and then read it again. This has changed the game immensely for me and I cannot express how much fun this game has become once I understood this. It has made my mediocre heroes and villains into Super Heroes and Super Villains.

If someone could write a market guide as good as this is explained I would be rich in the game as well.
  19. You failed to post a link Bionut911

But I think your gonna have to go down that device road for yourself and just see exactly what the issues are. This set is not what it used to be. What it used to be is what we call Traps today.
  20. plainguy

    Ninja/Dark Build

    They are all the same.

    1. Do a search for Dark on these forums.

    2. Download the build you like and swap out that pet set for ninja. If anything pay attention to undead since they are similar in attach fashion, meaning mixed range and melee pets. But really it does not matter as long as Dark is slotted properly.

    3. Re-slot or respec any powers that do not conform on the pets side.

    4. End result between darkest night and the stealth you should be very close to defense cap.

Once you have something you like post it up and have people pick it apart to make it better.
  21. Here is a link I posted in recently related to electric device.

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=260804

It's a few post down on this first page. It contains 4 links to info on */Device toons. The Retro fitting AR Device thread is very good on numerous Device builds. Personally I respeced my AR Device and with the incarnate slots it has brought new life into the build and I very much enjoy it.

    Quick suggestions.

    Go Range defense cap.
Pick up Hover and combat jump and super speed.
Since you will be doing a lot of hover blasting I would not bother with Trip mine and pick up gun drone.
Pick up Cardiac as you will need it.

Range defense cap worked out much better for me then Aid Self.
  22. Don't go Device

Take Traps instead, buy yourself a stealth IO proc and place it in super speed and call it a day. If you have issues in caves because of super speed you can turn on super speed with the stealth proc and buy yourself a jet pack and use that in caves. It offers the same benefits that cloaking device would but gives you the control you might need.

You can obtain full positional defense cap with Traps and still have the bombs you want.

Corruptor for DPS or Defender for higher defense returns ( basically you get defense cap quicker )

Further if you take the time to look down a bit you will see a thread on Gun Drone. Nutshell its a love hate relationship. And I never heard anyone ever say Traps sucks. where as Device is very debatable.
  23. Since you seem to have a clue on the IO stuff I will suggest the following

I would try to get the extra 2 percent and soft cap Smash and Lethal. I would also try to get ranged cap. If you can get both melee and ranged capped hey even better.

Go for the extra Hit point bonus from performance shifter.

Personal choice I know, but I would go with super speed with stealth IO proc and by a jet pack. I had super jump with stealth IO and it really did nothing, I spec-ed out to super speed. The speed with Stealth IO was just much better. If you have issues with super speed in a cave you can have it on and fly around with the jet pack. It still offers the stealth bonus that super jump stealth IO does not.

Replace your health with Numi +regen +recovery unique and a Numi Health. If you have it in serum you only have a chance of the unique working when you use serum. Where as in health it has a chance to proc every 6 or 10 seconds ( the cycle time slips my mind atm ).

In Serum put a Numi heal and Numi heal / recharge in Serum for the regen bonus.

I honestly don't know if it is possible to obtain pull positional and have the all the pets. I just haven't played around with the build to attempt that.
