My main is uninspiring (Energy/Devices) - what would you do?

My main, created nearly 3 years ago and my first 50, is simply no fun to play. He is an Energy/Devices Blaster that was a blast (ugh, puns) to play back when I had no friends and just soloed all the time. But now the KB is annoying to teammates and no one wants to wait around for mines to be laid. I don't really feel any symmetry between the two power sets. All I do with him is break him out once a week for a Hamidon run on Guardian. I was a bit energized (ugh, pun again) with the Incarnate slot but that's worn off.

I almost get sick to my stomach when I think about deleting him. I want to make him work. I've respec'ed and freespec'ed and burned Vet respecs. I went from Munitions Mastery to Electrical Mastery to Force Mastery to Flame Mastery (for the record, Force was my favorite). I have plenty of alts (one other 50, an MM) so I have plenty to do but he'll always be my "first".

So what would you do if you were in my shoes? Respec him? Retire him? Delete him? Redo him? Stop whining and go play?

Any energy/dev super-builds out there?

Here's mine. I went cardiac for the endredux/range, and Mace for the S/L/E def cap (with smokenade).

Solo, remember to tp-foe those nasty Rikti Drones before you toe-bomb an 8-man spawn and you'll get your Vanguard merit collection in a heartbeat

On teams, you're a ranged ST specialist, toHitDebuffer and caltrop tossing invisible toebomber (you can toebomb if you up your defenses). And yes, AoE dabbler as well. You do have a nice cone, an annoying radial blast, the bombs and a Nuke, if need be.

So don't delete it. Even if it might be abit underpowered nowadays (well, since around ED methinks) it's still a fun set, and it's nowhere near as weak as it was 3 years ago (no more toggle-dropping, much better damage, set bonuses to round up your def, etc).

"We can rebuild him/her"

First, stick with what you love (Force mastery). Next, evaluate what you want to focus on? Are you looking at IO set bonuses? If not, then continue with the respec. Often, when you respec, but then later realize you are aiming for set bonuses, that you probably need another respec. So, pick two IO set bonuses you want to build on that you find fun? If you want the most optimal IO set bonuses to aim for then you can do that, but realize it will require a heavier investment.

You're right. Deletion really isn't an option. I mean, I used to think that 50 was when I didn't have to worry about my toons any longer. But maybe it's the time when retooling and retweaking really begin.

And things aren't as bad as they used to be. Toggles don't drop. I still get to fire off my two Tier 1 powers when mezzed.

I'm going to load up your build in Mids and see if it provides a little inspiration.

My advice: delete the character.

There is very little that can be done to make energy/device feel super. Its not all doom and gloom though, deleting a character doesn't necessarily make them disappear forever. Sure you may lose some badges but let him be reborn! Think of it as a kind of respec, recreate his costume, come out with a back story and have some fun with it.

/rant
The truth is there are just some bad powerset combination and some powersets that have been all but abandoned by the Devs. Although you can find somebody to defend to death any number of underwhelming power combination, that does not make it fun to play. In fact, I think mostly that these people that claim to have such fun with truly underwhelming power set combination have most of their actual fun coming to the boards and playing high and mighty with anybody who wants to actually feel like a super hero. So come all ye faithful and preach about the blessings that energy/devices may lay upon us, but forgive me if I give you the same treatment as the bible thumping street preacher currently at my college's free speech area.
/rant

That's just my opinion though, you might come to a different conclusion.

He's my namesake and any character that I recreate in his image (obviously not Energy/Devices) would need to have his name. I'm not a huge role-player but back-story and character fun out-weighs maximizing a build (plus I don't have the inf for it). So here's an idea.

His name is Agent Hotspur. How about I purchase a rename token and don him "Ex-Agent Hotspur"? Then I'll create a new Blaster and name him Agent Hotspur. Maybe the Ex has retired. Maybe he'll make the move to red side. Either way, I can "hang him up" of sorts and focus on building the new Agent Hotspur.

The new Agent Hotspur could maybe be his son. Or maybe his clone. Or could maybe just be the next guy to wear the orange and white tights.

Any suggestions on power combinations? I already have AR/Devices, DP/Mental, Ice/Ice, and Elec/Elec. I'm thinking maybe Fire/Energy. Anybody want to throw their power opinion out?

Sound like a plan? Sounds like I'm crazy?

Well, if it's Hotspur's son, I imagine he'd want to keep his father's gear, so /Devices probably stays. I'd suggest either Fire/ for pure mayhem (it goes well with the name, too) or...

... Have you considered Sonic/? With the new palmblast animations it looks and plays pretty much like Energy/ minus all the annoying knockback. It adds abit of synergy with its -res making up for the lack of build-up, the stun that stacks with Taser, plus Siren's Song to put a whole spawn to sleep, allowing you to set up a second bomb or summon the GunTurret midfight.

Another thing that just occured to me is the whole Kheldian stuff. I guess Agent Hotspur could have been fatally wounded, becoming a Peacebringer or Warshade to save his life.

Finally, you could always hang on to him and hope for a buff to Energy/ or /Devs... Hey, it's been 7 years, it's bound to happen someday ^_^

P.S. Don't name him Ex-agent! Be kind to the guy, make him a Commander or General Hotspur or something! If he goes civvie, why not give him a name, like John Spurs? Just saying

Definately don't delete, I'd go with the rename, and maybe like mentioned above, give him a promotion or something with the new name. I'd go with Rad/Nrg or Rad/Fire, just cuz they look like somehting that would be unlike your other combo's.

Thanks for all the input so far, everybody. This has turned something I have been dreading into something that is quite invigorating. Here is my plan so far for (nothing is set in stone - this is what I'm considering):

Agent Hotspur (Energy/Devices)
1. Buy a rename token and go with "Ex-Agent Hotspur" or "Rogue Hotspur" or something else because...
2. Plan on taking him red side. Did he turn bad? Is he going deep undercover? Who knows?
3. I've already created an "aged" version of his costume - grizzled face, beard, graying hair, eye patch. Once I make the name change I'll apply the new costume.

Agent Hotspur (the new one)
1. I *think* I want to try out another Corruptor (already have a Rad/Rad). The new one, whether it is Hotspur's son or sidekick, would have access to the original's "toys" - so that means Traps (which I've never tried). I haven't tried Fire Blast either so I think I'm going with a Fire/Traps.
2. I'll probably start him as a Praetorian. How he got there? Was he whisked away by his mother to be raised gold side? Is he a clone? Is he the product of some plan by Cole's administration? Time will tell...

One last thing I have come to realize is that I am trying to do too much with a general build for the Energy/Devices Hotspur. I am going to create two builds - one for solo and one for team play. I have 900 million inf... I can afford another build.

I'm psyched about everything. What do ya'll think?

My first thought is delete.

That is tough though as your first 50 should hold a special place in your heart (unless you had it farmed, then delete). So retire. I would not spend more influence on this combo unless you truly just love it. Also, if you feel the mood to solo, well, there you go...

Posted

I've had my eye on a corruptor as well.

A few powerset combos that you may find fun:

DP/Kin, not for the fainthearted as you'll die lots, then when you give him def softcaped he will be an engine of destruction that happens to super power your team while he's at it. Also Kin loses almost nothing in translation from defender to corruptor.

DP/Traps, traps would be the next logical evolution from /device. In fact, traps is what must have of happened when some ingenious /device blaster got tired of the ineffectual nature of /device, went mad and defected to red side and perfected his technology of war.

Fire/Dark:
Sometimes one must walk the line, the line between light and dark, between right and wrong. Other times, one just wants to feel extremely powerful..

My first Blaster to level 50 was a Energy/Devices Blaster. I still have him and actually play him on occasion. He was very painful to level, but I found a few things that actually made him fun to play. Let me share some of those with you:

1) Drop Time Bomb from your build. It is almost impossible to use when teaming and very frustrating and time consuming when soloing.

2) Get everything from your primary (with the possible exception of Power Push). Everything is good and can be useful in many situations you will find yourself in.

3) Be very picky about what you get from your secondary, but also know that some of the powers mean you do not need to dip into power pools.

4) Since you will probably be skipping quite a few powers from your secondary, go for utility from your power pools. Get Super Speed (or Celerity +Stealth for Sprint) so you can stealth missions with Cloaking Device. Grab Recall Friend so you can help speed up task forces by TP'ing people to the end. Try hover blasting since it helps with your defense and shooting mobs from above turns that annoying knockBACK into knockDOWN. Feel free to get Maneuvers and Assault (because who doesn't like a little extra defense and damage, especially since you don't have Build Up). Stock up on Red and Yellow inspirations, you will need them and don't be afraid to use them liberally.

5) Finally, while it isn't the best combination in the world, it can be fun and work if you take some time to make it work. It took me a long time to come to grips on how to make it fun, but now I get a kick out of playing him (with special thanks to IOs).

He is not as much fun as my Claws/SR Scrapper, my Fire/Kin Controller or my Fire/MM Blaster, but he has some charm to him that prevents me from deleting him.

And when all else fails, you can just slot knockback into Nova and see how far you can send Hellions flying.

50 Fire/Axe Tank
50 Spine/Inv Scrap
50 Eng/Dev Blast
50 Claw/SR Scrap

I have been playing my ENG/DEV Blaster a bit recently and have decided to revisit this thread to share the new build I am working on. And so, while I would never make another */Dev Blaster, this character had a very specific concept and Devices fit it perfectly, it does offer some usability and fun.

I am currently in the process of going villain so I can get the Mace Mastery PPP for Scorpion Shield and Web Envelope. And since it includes a free respec... icing on the cake. After I get my PPP I will be heading back to the Blue side.

I have always played this character as a Hover Blaster and so my build was to try and capitalize on that theme. As a result I have Hover in the build. I will almost certainly take the Cardiac Incarnate, not only for the end discount, but for the range as well. Such a great combo for a Hover Blaster with as many toggles as I will have.

The build has a lot of room for improvement, but I wanted to try and use as many of the IO sets that I currently have while at the same time capping my S/L Defense. I have no intention of ever getting purple sets or the LotG +7.5 Recharge IOs on this character. As a result, Hasten is used more for helping me drop Trip Mines faster when soloing, to get Nova up faster, or in pinch situations when I need my big hitting powers up faster, and not as an always on power. It is up often enough for my needs.

Finally, this is a budget build since I don't play it enough to spend more Inf on it and I already have the vast majority of the IOs.

Anyway, here is the build I am working on:

I have a level 37 sonic/dev blaster that was PL'd for PvP, so I didn't actually play him much. Now that I've given up on PvP, I tried leveling him in PvE, and it's just no fun. I haven't deleted him, but I don't see myself playing him ever again. Compared to my other blasters (fire/em and archery/elec), he is just a joke.

The point is that I see no way of improving a devices blaster. The set is just so poor compared to everything else, it's like trying to make a racecar out of a Geo Metro. Yes, you can make it faster, but it'll still be a very slow car.

I'm not a fan of deleting toons, so I would strip him of anything worthy and then retire him.

[QUOTE=Ob1Shinobi;3518956]You're right. Deletion really isn't an option. I mean, I used to think that 50 was when I didn't have to worry about my toons any longer. But maybe it's the time when retooling and retweaking really begin.

it really is

Sorry to hijack the thread but I want you to know you aren't alone.

My very first lvl 50 blaster (and only 50) is an ice/dev. He is one of the very first chars I made. I have been playing since beta(with a 3 year break in there, only logging on during 2xp events). Yeah I am attached to him. However somewhere in the 30's I got really bored with him. Device really stinks for grouping and it was quite boring soloing with him. The real life friends I started playing this game with had long been gone. I thought about deleting him many, many times and re-rolling but it took so long to get him to 50 that I just couldn't see me doing it. Once I got to 50 I parked him and rolled alt after alt. Flash Forward to today and I still have him. However I have recreated him on another server and went ice/en this time around. I am having fun once again. The point I am trying to make is that you shouldn't delete him, but do as others have said and re-roll a new guy even if on another server.

I would retire him for the time being. Maybe someday the Dev's will fix /Devices. Then you'll be happy you kept him around.

I saw your prior notes about making a Fire/ Corrupter. Have you consider a Fire/Kin Corrupter?

I have one at level 47 currently and he is very fun to play. I think I get a thrill out of running up to a large group to hit Fulcrum Shift and then hitting my Inferno power. This is of course after the tank runs in to grab aggro.

The bonus being that you'll always be invited to teams. The downside is buffing people. I personally made a macro for speed boost so #1 would hit player 1, #2 would hit player 2, etc.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

I've had painful decisions like that to make before. It's much easier to reset a character now, though.

Hex's steps to character recreation:

1. Log into the character and hit the tailor. Save every outfit you have.

2. Respec and pull out that stealth IO. It's expensive. If you have purples, it might take a few respecs.

3. Global email your important enhancements and money to mules. If you don't have mules, make one.

4. Carefully pick your new AT and powersets, but don't make the character yet. Be sure because the next part is when you probably want to move quickly.

5. Delete the old character.
5.b. Make the new character immediately. Don't fret power selection or even costume. You'll have vet respecs and tailor sessions galore. JUST PARK THE NAME with the desired AT and powersets.

6. Level. Pick the powers that make levelling a snap, because you'll either have respecs or you can use build two to push out your final build.

With all the tools available, plus Tips providing super experience and rewards, you can make it back to 50 with much less pain than you did when you originally made the character. Plus, the alignment merits you pocket along the way are super super useful. Save them!!!

As far as concept. Just retcon the whole story line and history. You can even pull one of those "he's dead. NO WAIT!" deals that comics favor.

I have a feeling that the love for the original character, plus the adventure of experiening new things with your 'main' will make you forget that old tired 50 very quickly.

I've had to do this before and was terrified. Ended up being the best choice of my CoH career.

Since I don't play either Energy or Devices I can't comment there, but I would strongly recommend you NOT delete the character. If you're tight on slots then move him to another server and park him... sometime down the road you'll probably be glad you saved him.

As an example my very first character was a Fire/EM blaster; I played him into the mid-20's and got sick and tired of the constant debt that I had with him so I deleted him and rolled up CMA who became my first 50. About a year ago I decided to revisit that Fire/EM and rolled up another. Strangely enough this time things worked much better and I really enjoyed the character.

Another example would be CMA himself, with the massive nerfs of issue 5 and 6 I really didn't enjoy playing him anymore so I moved on to other characters. Issue 7 with the change to the way defense worked brought him back a little, and after a year of not playing him it was kind of new and fun again. IO's with issue 9 was another improvement but it wasn't until issue 13 and the last round of Invuln changes that he became godly again. The game constantly changes so don't throw away a character you've enjoyed for a long time... instead just shelve that character for a while.

My first toon ever, rolled on launch, and my global namesake, was an En/En. I finally hit 50 w/him this past week. My Fire/Cold, Arch/Fire & Ice/MM had all surpassed him, and are more fun to play. I recently got my En/En groove on (to finally push for 50) by leveraging Boost Range w/my cones (picked up an APP cone) and being able to blast away from silly ranges.

En/Dev... my god, I couldn't deal w/that combo. No BU, Boost Range, blapping abilities (which is another thing my En/En does well)... I can't advocate deleting your "main", but I'd seriously consider "retiring" him on an off server.

Or... wait for I20 where everyone's going to be on more equal footing. Pick up Musculature for your Alpha, then take the Pyro Judgment slot, and nuke w/the best of them even w/o BU (of course that also means tanks & defenders will be nuking as well as you). Not sure how well Dev will be leveraging those new Incarnate slots (Musc. boosted mine field + Judgment = win? Dev's slower playstyle may sorta work out for Judgment's unenhanceable recharge), but just the fact that Judgment won't be affected by BU closes the gap bet. Dev & everyone else.

Try IOing it out with recharge and getting incarnate powers. Works for me. Its great actually. Took a while to figure it out though. Some powers have that certain synergy with incarnate powers, real treat.

Here is a link I posted in recently related to electric device.

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=260804

It's a few post down on this first page. It contains 4 links to info on */Device toons. The Retro fitting AR Device thread is very good on numerous Device builds. Personally I respeced my AR Device and with the incarnate slots it has brought new life into the build and I very much enjoy it.

Quick suggestions.

Go Range defense cap.
Pick up Hover and combat jump and super speed.
Since you will be doing a lot of hover blasting I would not bother with Trip mine and pick up gun drone.
Pick up Cardiac as you will need it.

Range defense cap worked out much better for me then Aid Self.
