I don't know if the patch did anything for my graphics (they look the same to me), but I believe I found a fix to my problem. Disabling the startup service called Apoint.exe seems to alleviate the movement and typing lag I've been suffering from. Took some trial and error to find it. I'm pretty militant about what services and programs I run. Because of that, I know that Apoint controls the scrolly-thing on my laptop's touchpad. Disabling it prevents me from scrolling with the keyboard's touchpad, but I can still use my mouse, so it's a small price to pay if it makes the game playable again. Also, I know for a fact that I've been running the service for a long while and it has never interfered with gameplay before i17. Strangely, although movement and typing have been restored, the cursor itself remains glitchy and occasionally invisible. Weird...
Thanks for all the suggestions yall gave me. I was pretty pissed that the day I finally earned a billion influence w my main toon was the same day the game came crashing down around me. -
I've been plagued with the exact same problems listed in this thread since i17 came out. I don't see any hotkey programs on my computer, but I think I found my fix. I hope this info is useful to somebody out there. -
Whoa... thanks everyone for all the comments. I AM using an integrated Intel card - Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family. Although I'm not able to update the drivers using Windows or the HP site, I WAS able to update the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile" program that I downloaded a few years ago. Admittedly, I have no idea what this program does or even if I'm using it. But I WAS able to update the graphic drivers for it. I guess I need to start at square one and defrag, clean up computer, run with services disabled, experiment with different settings, etc. I was hoping to avoid all that.
Who knows - maybe this is just a simple case of porn-clog. -
Quote:I haven't yet tried the dozens of "fixes" that I've tried in the past, which have ranged from playing in safe mode to removing clumps of cat hair from my computer's heat sink. (Hey, don't knock the cat hair thing - it's been the most effective fix by far!)What are some of your system specs?
Have you tried running the game in safe mode (via a check box next to the EULA agreement)?I haven't had much time. I just thought I'd ask if CoH had maybe mentioned that players who use minimum graphics may be adversely affected by i17, or something like that. I didn't find anything in the News/Announcements forum.

Hi. I know it's only been a couple days since i17 came out and there are some bugs that need to be fixed, but I'm wondering if i17 (which includes new graphics settings) has caused an increase in the minimum system specs required to run the game? I've been playing for 2 years on a computer that just barely runs the game even with minimum graphics settings (which I use). In fact, teaming and co-op zones are not really an option for me because they make me lag so bad. But I still enjoy playing the game.
Since the i17 patch, I have massive (about 2 second) delays with character movement and typing in chat window, funky black lines on screen (are they shadows?), and a flickery glitchy cursor. Interestingly, these problems are present even on the game log-in screen. I'm still set at minimum graphics so I don't understand why the new "ultra" graphics are screwing me up.
So anyhow, I'm not asking for 100 ways to trouble-shoot my problems (been there, done that - pretty sure I can search the forums if I want to do that again). I'm just wondering if they've increased the system requirements to the point that my computer can no longer handle it. And please don't suggest I buy a new computer. I would if I could.
Thanks! -
I've had a similar issue that started immediately after the i17 patch. Extreme delay with character movement and typing in chat window, crazy dark lines all over screen (I think they're supposed to be shadows), and a flickery unstable cursor. It may not sound that bad but it essentially makes the game unplayable. I tried switching into Window Mode because that corrected the similar problems when I played WoW but no such luck this time. Good luck and please let me know if and how you're able to resolve it.

So since i15 launched I have been unable to connect to the updater (see previous whiney posts for details). I tried a million different things but nothing worked. Security issues with the campus network I'm using were mentioned by several people, but IT assured me that they don't block ports. Because I was able to play the game previously on this network, I believed them.
So today I was able to catch a ride into the closest little town (I'm in the sticks) and against all odds I found a coffee shop offering free wireless. I connected to their network, clicked on the game, and lo and behold the patches and updates started immediately. When I got back to campus I connected to the network again unsure if I would experience the same problem or not. IT WORKED! I was able to log in and the game looks fine. So I guess whatever security measures they use on campus only affect the patches and updates, not the game itself. In other words, campus IT was wrong. Oh well, it happens...
But the main point of this post is to thank NCSoft Support. I've been working with them for the past week trying to resolve my problem and I found them to be very friendly, professional, and most importantly PROMPT!
So I don't care what you say, NCSoft Support Rocks! -
Same problem here except i go straight from "Connecting #1" to "Checking Updater", and then nothing. I've been talking with NCSoft support since Monday. I've done a million things trying to fix it but no luck so far. I'll let you know if I find out anything useful. Good luck!
-
I'm not sure if my problem is the same as yours but I'm wondering about Ping Plotter. I haven't been able to connect to the updater since i15 launched. NCSoft blames the network I'm using and the network swears it's not blocking the ports. So I guess I'm screwed until I can connect to a different network (which will be in a month). So anyhow my question is:
Is it normal for Ping Plotter to say "destination address unreachable" when checking CoH IPs? Or is this something I can use to troubleshoot my problem? -
Well I've been trying to log on for almost 3 days with no luck. I know others are able to, but I (and others) can't. Tried and tried and tried and tried again.

Minor update on updater's lack of update:
I double-checked my firewall settings in both McAfee and Windows. McAfee has 2 listings each for CoH.exe and CoHUpdater.exe. 1 of each is old (around original install date) and 1 of each is within the past few days. I changed them all to "Full Access" (1 or 2 of them said"Outbound Access Only") but the older CoHUpdater keeps reverting to Outbound Access Only. Weird, huh? Anyhow, it didn't allow me to connect to the udater.
So I disabled all start-up services (including McAfee) and rebooted. No luck.
Strange thing with Windows Firewall: I noticed that CoH.exe WAS listed as an exception (granting it access and so forth) but CoHUpdater WAS NOT. So I added it to the exception list. I experienced the same problem when I try to connect from the desktop shortcut BUT NOW when I try to connect from the CoH file I get the ol' "This program cannot display the webpage..." message.
Why would the shortcut at least TRY to connect to the game but the file itself acts like there's no internet connection?
Now I'm just more confused than ever.
By the way, I should not have started a second post with my problem (forum noob). If my 2 posts can be consolidated to make my plight easier to understand, please feel free.
Thanks again for any insight. -
[ QUOTE ]
For all of you having connection issues: ISP type and brand please. If it's dialup or satellite or cell phone based, there are always going to be issues. Try running multiple updaters (up to 20) to see if you get one that connects.
You might also search the forums for Ping Plotter and how to use that to ping the servers and find a bad 'hop' between you and the game servers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ok, it took a while for me to find pingplotter and i'm guessing that the target name is 'cohupdate.coh.com'. Running it now but don't really know what I'm looking at. Hop #10 says "destination address unreachable". Every few seconds Hop #5 through #9 shift a little bit (as if it's retrying? i dunno.)
Please let me know if this means anything to you. I'm at a complete loss. -
I'm connected on a University campus, so not sure what the ISP is. I'm gonna try what you recommended above.
-
If you figure it out, let me know. Had this problem since Mon morning and still can't figure it out.
-
I'm inclined to believe it IS the update servers as I still cannot connect.
-
My game still won't connect or update. Going on 2 days now. Anyone else with this problem?
-
It's true. I had a million problems running CoH when I first got it (including random frame rate drops) and tried everything imaginable to fix it. Nothing helped until I realized the fan on my laptop wasn't working. It was a simple matter to access the heat sink (located right next to the fan). When I did, I pulled out a wad of cat hair the size of a golf ball that was interfering with the fan (and therefore the cooling system). Fixed my problems immediately. I have to repeat the process every few months. Oh well... a small price to pay for the joy of living with Mr. Whiskers and Sir Purrs-alot. (Out of respect for the kitties, pseudonyms have been used to protect their anonymity.)

Ok, here is the HijackThis log. Never run that program before so let me know if this is what you need. I always have a minimum number of programs running at start-up and regularly clean the junk off of my system (using AdAware, Spybot,McAfee Virus, etc...)
Thanks in advance for your help!

You can see that I run the game with minimum graphics. I'll post HijackThis next. -
I'm having the same problem. Just posted a desperate cry for help. CoH Updater says it's "Checking Updater" but it's not. Never had this problem with an update before. The last thing I want to do is reinstall the game or start moving/renaming files. I can be patient, but only if I know it will eventually work. Otherwise I'm just wasting my time. Any suggestions?

Hi all. First post ever so bear with me.
My problem started yesterday morning so I assume it's related to i15. When I start the program (from my desktop or the Start Menu) the CoH Updater screen comes up and says "Connecting #1" for about 2 seconds before it says "Checking Updater". Then nothing happens. I've tried it 100 times and nothing. I left it up for 2 hours... nothing. I've rebooted system and checked Windows Firewall setting... nothing. Also, Internet connection is fine (hence me being able to post here).
The graphics that usually load on the Updater screen are not there; the screen is black except for the bottom where it says "Checking Updater" and a progress bar that isn't moving. It also says 0B/0B, 0B/sec, and 0:00 remaining. So I feel safe in assuming nothing is happening.
I don't know if it's relevant, but I've noticed when I start the game from the CoH folder , I DO get the graphics, though everything else is the same as above.
I checked the program file to make sure it ends with ".exe" and it does. (I saw to check that in a post somewhere.)
That's about it. The game worked fine on this computer Sun night (the night before it stopped working). Like I said, it must be related to i15.
One more thing... I live with my boyfriend and he is experiencing the exact same thing. Again, a bad Internet connection comes to mind but that's not the problem. The only difference is that my computer is older than his and I use Windows XP. He has Vista.
Any help would be great! Reading other posts about i15 is like salt in the wound. I want to play too!
