Cannot connect to updater since I15

Hi folks,

I'm not sure what happened but I can no longer connect to the CoH updater since issue 15. I could connect normally prior to the game update, but now the updater loads and is stuck at "Connecting...#". I let it get to #260 before I just gave up.

When this first happened I thought it was just a backlogged update server, but now I'm not so sure. I've been trying to get on for a week with no luck!

Can anyone help me?

It's not the server - these boards would be on fire if that were true.

More than likely, you've got some sort of firewall that's blocking the updater. The updater itself got updated with I15 so you may have to tell your firewall to let it through again.

I just checked and my firewall is turned off. Would it help to uninstall it and then download the client again?

Edit: Also I'm using a laptop with Windows Vista and an Nvidia/GEForce card if that changes anything.

Same problem here except i go straight from "Connecting #1" to "Checking Updater", and then nothing. I've been talking with NCSoft support since Monday. I've done a million things trying to fix it but no luck so far. I'll let you know if I find out anything useful. Good luck!

Please have a look at the 'Read This' linky below. The second post, IIRC, covers the vast majority of the connection issues with the updater.

You might also try the satellite users trick of running multiple updaters (up to 20) at the same time until one of them connects, closing all the others at that time. It's been known to work.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Actually, does that multiple-updaters thing work? I just tried and the game pops up an error message when I try starting a second updater (an error that pops up behind the updater form!).

Hm.

Well, you *may* have to copy the updater to another location, say, the desktop. Not a shortcut, an actual copy. And run that. It may be trying to lock the original in the Co* directory is why you're getting that error.

So... I did that.

Wow... they've gotten *really* messy... all kinds of stuff on the deskop gets put there... odd. However, the thing ran as many as I wanted, no errors. So the lock thing is probably what's going on there.

Given that, I feel you must now make a temp directory somewhere (say... on the deskop) and plonk the updater there. Run that one over and over.

---

Although it's a low occurance issue, I still feel, as I have from day one of my first issue with the updater, that a download area for... I dunno... *pieces* of the game, say, update1.exe, update.exe, etc. At least that way, it can be chunkified, pasted together, and most importantly, downloaded with a download manager, which would have to be infinitely better than the current system... at least for those who are having the issue.

I'm also of the opinion that a *verifiable* problem plagued user should be the only one who can do this, and must go through support to get a one time username/password to get these things... although I don't know how that'll work with the download manager... Hm. Quandry at best.

Big gigantic updates suck.

I'm having this same problem with Windows Vista- the uploader gets hung up on "checking updater" - haven't been able to get in since i15 came out. I made sure my permissions were correct on my firewall (even tried turning it off). Anyone figure out a resolution for this?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Well, of course it's hazy, you shook it furiously. Tiny bubbles in that blue inky stuff now. Way to go, Texas.

Cybershadow, the 'Read This' link is probably the best bet, as well as the Connection issues (or whatever it's called) sticky at the top of the forum.

In most circumstance I've ever heard of, the issues that cause this are:

.Software firewall borkin' the works.
.ISP rules borkin' the works.
.Router borkin' the works.
.Some sorry server between you and the download server borkin' the works.
.Satellite connection issues borkin' the works (mainly because it's satellite)
.Dialup issues borkin' the works, although FatherXmas might help you with that.

There may be others, but thems are the majority. Go search for the words 'Ping Plotter' and find the IPs for the servers, and go pingplot the paths. You might find the answer that way.

Getting the Net Info Tool might also help ya.

Good luck!

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, your solution may differ from the OP's, so it's usually a good idea if you need to continue this to start your OWN thread, so we don't confuse the two. Thanks!

Well, I'm having to shake it furiously now since I've used it so much of late.

Otherwise, it stays stuck on "As I see it, yes"

Well, at least it's a postive answer that way...

<QR>

I found this as I took a look at my GF's machine after I15 got put to the mains.

Check your Anti-Virus to make sure CityofHeroes.exe is alowed, but also that CohUpdater.exe is alowable as well.

Somehow after I15 came out, the Anti-virus program took the updater off the alowed list. Go figure...

Thank you for the time...

EDIT: Cleaned up mistypings...

When there is an update, especially a major update, the CoHUpdater.exe file is often changed to a different version, which will often cause Anti-Virus and Firewall programs to remove it from safe lists and allow lists.
