Packet Loss argh!

For the past week I've been getting periods of rather heavy packet loss on all my computers on my network. I've tried to ping cityofheroes.com but the ping plotter declares that "Destination is unreachable" and gives 100% packet loss right after the sixth hop. I'm able to ping google, download.com, and other websites just fine and get speeds of 55 or so ms round trip. Anyone have any more IP addresses I can ping for COH???

Wow thanks Quite a few of those I can't get past hop 6.. however a few of the IP addresses that can get past hop 6 show a big spike in ms (from 10 up to 100+ and it stays that way) until it gets to a point where it reaches 100% packet loss. So I guess there isn't much I can do, as the issues are well outside my area :I

The game is on Limelight networks and they don't allow ping or traceroute (ICMP) so and 'lost' packets at the game server end are normal.

If i'm having connection trouble I try /neterrorcorrection 1 or 2
first, then I troubleshoot my local network, then i'll try to figure out if there is something going on with my ISP.

Well the neterrorcorrections didn't do anything. still getting fairly regular red spikes in the netgraph. Everything in my network seems fine... my round trip pings to various websites are all in the 55ms or less range with no packet loss and my download/upload speeds are all smoking fast. On some of the CoH pings I did that would allow me to see past the 6th hop I could see the ms jump from 10-20 to 100+ and stay that way for the next several hops before it hit the Limelight i suppose. I think I'm just in a waiting game hoping whatever is going on at the 12th hop gets fixed lol.

I hear about this a lot, but what does /neterrorcorrection actually do? I'm curious, because I'm getting stupid-high packet loss, myself, though I suspect it's because of my unreliable ISP.

No idea, but its the first voodoo I apply, because there isn't much that can be done if its a problem upstream, most of those things get fixed without any input by an end user, just never on the schedule you would like.

I had terrible lag last night so i'm in agreement that there is a problem upstream.

Yeah, i've got no red spikes right now on my netgraph... nor did I yesterday morning. But the second it hits "prime time" I get nailed. Here's hoping its fixed tonight

I've been having these issues for about the past week as well. It has gotten increasingly worse to the point that the game is unplayable as it stands. My pings/tracerts to other locations are fine, with the possible exception of other west coast addresses. Perhaps there is a bad router between the east coast and west?

I'm not sure if my problem is the same as yours but I'm wondering about Ping Plotter. I haven't been able to connect to the updater since i15 launched. NCSoft blames the network I'm using and the network swears it's not blocking the ports. So I guess I'm screwed until I can connect to a different network (which will be in a month). So anyhow my question is:

Is it normal for Ping Plotter to say "destination address unreachable" when checking CoH IPs? Or is this something I can use to troubleshoot my problem?

Its normal, beyond a certain point llnw.net (Limelight Networks) and the game servers etc block ICMP (ping, traceroute etc).

I tried running the network information tool... wondering what the point is when it can't ping the various CoH ip addresses either :P Although it shows no real slowdown and no packet loss until it hits addresses it can't ping past, at which point it is 100%

I'm going to chime in here again and ask:

Did you read the second post in "Read This" below? Because it has all the steps you can try regarding this issue.

Another thing to try, if you're on some satellite/cell/? service that's not truly wired, is to run up to 20 updaters, one after the other, until you see one that gets connected.

It's rather hit or miss, but typically, any and all updater issues are *external* to the game servers. I.e., the path to them from your computer, or your computer itself.

Good luck!
