I'm going to assume those same people never play Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess or any other game where they might win and someone else might lose? I mean...they never competed in sports at school and basically live their lives with an unquenchable hunger to never do better than the other guy?

In my experience, most of the time it really comes down to: 'I don't want to lose, I can't guarantee that my skills will let me win so I won't play.' That's just my personal experience though.
I'll agree with this, at least in my case, but with a slight distinction. I will avoid games not where I can't guarantee that my skills will let me win, but where I suspect my skills would preclude me from winning.

If I think I have a fighting chance, I'll fight. If I don't, I see no point at all in bothering.
  2. I really don't like being taken out of my comfort zone, be it games, movies, TV, books, social situations, wherever. I like comfortable. If something makes me uncomfortable, I am going to avoid it.

These days I buy and play very few games. I play CoH a lot because I am comfortable with it. I buy games in the Civ series because I am comfortable with it (though CoH eats up all of my gaming time that I don't really ever play Civ). I will play Mario-type games with the kids because I'm comfortable with them. I'll balk at others because at times I simply don't have the mental energy to figure them out (or, to figure them out to the point where they aren't frustrating; one-on-one battles in Metroid are simple enough in concept, but if it is going to take work to not be killed 20-1 playing against my son, I am not going to stick with it k thx).

That's not to say I don't like competition. I like Chess, I like poker, I like strategy games and when I play I want to win. But I need to be in the mood. I need to know what's coming.
  3. Have not been feeling the pressure. I've been leveling my AR/Dev blaster and Elec/Sonic troller.

The hubub over the WST and now I20 - that it doesn't have any [announced] solo content - reminded me. There is such a backlog of "content" that I still hadn't done, that it doesn't yet matter if I20 will bring anything new for me.

I put content in quotes because I still consider power sets and combinations thereof as content. My alts are content, and I should embrace them.

This actually reminds me - anyone know if the clones able to be teleported? I haven't tried on my Merc/Poison, but I was wondering if porting the clones to my henchman rather than seeking them out would be viable.

I fought him once and got him to stop, after which he beat me down. I figured at that point I wasn't overcoming his resistance/regen and WANTED him to run...and by that point he wouldn't.

(I believe I reset the mission and let him walk)
  6. CURSE YOU, CRIMSON!

Thanks for bringing this up, Sam, as it reminds me of another mission from back in the day which I absolutely hated - Stop The Ritual from Skipper LeGrange. Trying to prevent those darned Fir Bolg from sprinting through that mystic gate. If there was a mission that I would swear to never do again, that one would be it.

And now...there's an Incarnate Trial where you have to stop inmates from escaping.

Granted, I've not tried out the BAF. But the thought that it might be anything like the Fir Bolg mission gives me the shivers.

Ahh, that stinks if the pet is explicitly Praetorian. I was thinking this might be a good way to implement the long-sought after sidekicks, especially if there is progression built in there.
  8. An incarnate questionnaire. Sure, I'll bite.

How many level 50's are you attempting to 'become an incarnate'?

Well, ideally I'd like ALL of them to become incarnates, as far as unlocking the Alpha slot goes. Eventually I will probably go back and run Ramiel's arc on all of them (I've done maybe half of 14), and that will become standard practice on new 50s.

Do you feel that doing more than say one hero and one villain is doing 'too much at once'?

It depends I guess on how flexible the system is. If you can pick and choose slots, then probably no. Work on Lore on one character, Judgement on another, etc. If they are sequential, then yes.

Do you feel a shift has occurred to more time devoted solely to level 50's leaving far less time to level an alt?

    Game-wide? Probably.

Do you feel this is a good thing?

I primarily solo, so the number of alts being played vs 50s doesn't affect me greatly. Availability of mid-level goods on the market perhaps, but that's always been a problem.

Do you seem to not have enough time to devote to alt characters because you feel you need to be collecting shards and such?

Actually...it's not been a problem. Post-WST I have primarily been leveling alts. I'm not going to make major headway with shards, and w/o doing task forces I'm going to hit a roadblock on the Tier 3 Alpha. So unless I'm in the mood for the WST AND have the time for it, I might as well level alts.

Do you think changing the Weekly Task Force to a Bi-montly Task Force would be 'better'? Perhaps offering a more relaxed atmosphere for the playerbase?

Nah. If players are going to tire of a specific TF after a week (or just not like a particular selection), it'll be even worse after two. Rotating them weekly is fine.

Considering that leagues can take up to 48 characters (and for raids it might be a good idea to have that many?) and there have been worries from some that it might be hard to fill them on some servers at some times, it really would make some sense to make the raids cross-server. If the technology now exists and will be part of I20, that probably would warrant the NDA.

I haven't tried this myself, so I can't say if it's true, if it is something that used to work and has been changed or if it's just a rumor.

    Edit.: Too slow
I've spawned it in Talos before too by porting to my SG base then using the teleporter to Talos. Probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but luckily nobody else was around so no collateral damage done.

I had him down to about 2/5 health and thought he might give up in just a few more hits. He bifurcated and I made the mistake of not going after the bifurcation immediately.

I realized my mistake too late; delayed on that clone set me back on the next, and then they started spawning where I had to find them. Slow on a couple more and he was right back at full health.

After a few of minutes of this (some might call it battle, some might call it...tedium), I happened into the lava and he followed me. I figured what the heck, I'll just stay here. Otherwise I might be at this forever. Managed to get him stunned and that was about it.

    Final bifurcation count: sixteen.

This has been this way for a bit now. I want to say they added it around I17, but I'm too lazy to confirm in the patch notes.

Oh, as an aside, the new vet reward rez works excellently in comparison to something like Revive. It gives you moment of untouchable status, plus the "ding"-style inspiration combo, which makes sure you don't get mezzed and are fairly hard to hit. I've used it to rez a melee character in a partial pile of +3 Malta with it and defeated the rest of them without popping my toggles.
Oh, now *that* is a nice vet reward. I'll have to wait 12 months to get it, but it's nice.

I have much better luck with RoTP on my blaster than I do with Revive on my regen scrapper.

Inspirations I never bother to even carry (solo).

I'm inclined to agree with this.

Based off of time, I can't really be considered a "casual" player. I've Been subscribed for over five years and have logged a few thousand hours. I have over a dozen 50s, and have planned builds in Mids for all of them. I have two accounts (financially I can't be considered casual either...).

But I do consider myself a low-impact player. I'll craft and sell on the market, but I don't seek out niches on the market or attempt to flip (but probably have 5B spread among characters anyway). I'm not part of an active SG. I don't obsess over badges. I can't run at +4x8 (or even 0x8). I can't solo pylons, or AVs, or TFs. I don't stealth objectives or run arcs/tips for speed. I have Incarnates, but have only participated in two WST (and no other TF that drop components).
  15. I don't go out of my way to purchase them, but if I roll the Numina or Miracle I will have a character that can use it. So I loosely plan for builds to have them (for builds I originally planned on having Health/Stamina that is; my Ice/MM blaster didn't, so she had no auto/toggle powers in which to put them). If it takes a while to get around to having it, that's fine. I've been fairly lucky in rolling them though.

Regenerative Tissue is another matter though. I've rolled a couple, but I can't remember actually slotting any. Not sure it's worth it unless you have a passive you're 5-slotting for the 5% recharge bonus (as yeah, opposed to the very nice 12% regen for two Numina's).

Not with the Going Rogue box, at least not until the second character. For trial purposes I advised looking for GvE or Architect editions, which of course wouldn't even give Praetoria as an option.

I also gave my opinion to him that story-wise Praetoria really wouldn't be appropriate either. The storylines are just too weighty for kids.

He wanted to know if I felt it was safe for them to play what is labeled a teen/adult game.

I told him it was (I let my son play, but with some definite restrictions on teaming and communication). But I also warned him that should they play, they should definitely *not* start in Praetoria, and likely not in the Rogue Isles either.

I used to turn difficulty settings up, but I seldom do now. In my mind the relative rewards for doing so have changed, and don't really make it worthwhile.

Pre-inventions, the main reward to be had was XP. So the goal of course was to get XP faster/more efficiently. Especially if a toon was suited for ST damage or could lock down a +2 just as easily as a +0. This helped speed things up in a time where there weren't radio missions and there were more gaps in the content (and before leveling was smoothed out).

Post-inventions, taking out higher targets didn't make as much sense. More mobs equal more drop opportunities, or rather more drop opportunities per level.

A-Merits made this even worse; there wasn't only a reason to get through more mobs per level, there was also a reason to get through more missions. Why go through 600 mobs to complete 10 tip missions when you could defeat 300 (or, defeat 600 on two characters, completing 20 tips)? Why earn one A-Merit per level when you could earn two?

If you get strong enough where defeating 5 or 10 foes really doesn't take any longer than 3...then yeah, no reason not to up team size at least. But before then, not really.

And this all paints a picture of one thing: that I don't hate multiplayer in itself, I just hate competitive multiplayer. I'm fine until I'm expected to pit my skills against those of another and then I just get edgy. And I think I have a good grasp on why. It's because I have half of a competitive streak. When I say "half" I mean that a full competitive streak means that you love winning and hate losing, whereas I just hate losing and aren't particularly fussed about winning. So on the whole, from an accounting standpoint, it makes more sense just to not play at all. I play games to escape from the misery of daily life, not to feel all pressured from having to prove I'm better at some small meaningless task than some **** in Illinois.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be competitive games. I understand why competitive sports exist, it's important to know who's the best at something, it's just that I know I'm not going to be the best on any world stage and I'd rather just accept that about myself. I hate it when online flash games only have global high score tables, rather than your own personal bests so you know what you're trying to beat. The world is big enough a place that there is always, always going to be someone sadder than you. Except you, Sadpants McGee.

Well...such is why I figured I'd ask on the forums first.

Some vets don't run with the same people every week (or, well, ANY week); some vets haveen't focused on the team-oriented content.

Now when my tanker with Energy Melee got stun, energy transfer and total focus she got a lot less annoying as I could take her up to the god mode point, pop reds, hit stun and then let ET and TF finish her off while stunned. Other than Shock Treatment any mission that has a chance at the Arachnos map with the huge room of lag. My computer is old and normal Arachnos maps drop the frame rate to slideshow levels but this map takes that lag and level shifts it up.
Yeah, I just came back to post about her, as I just attempted the Freakshow Educator mission on my AR/Dev. Not only did I have to deal with three Tanks (two of which rezzed - so much for trip mine!), I have to deal with a Shock Treatment ambush. Even if I stay out of melee she pops power surge and completely drains me. Not worth dealing with (and enough to get me to switch bosses back off; maybe in another 8 levels at 40).
  23. Here's my build, which I typically run solo but will team on the occasional TF. I've also opted for Cardiac. I can't say I really built for much in particular, though I do have an ok bit of regen and some recharge (though technically I don't yet have all three of the LoTG+ slotted...or all the Posi's, for that matter). The slots in Steamy Mist would probably be beneficial somewhere else, admittedly. Oh, and the APP is really only for thematic purposes, though I do like having the heal.

  24. Will CoT portals summon bosses on larger team size settings?

I think it's been said by some that some DE tip missions spawn bosses regardless of the boss setting, too.
