    This debate again?

Brutes are brutes. Masterminds are masterminds, tanks are tanks, scrappers are scrappers.

However, brutes have access to certain powers, such as taunt, and good mitigation potential which can allow them to fill the role of a tank. Some of these brute powersets work really well with tanking, especially those with lots of AoE mitigation available to not only maintain aggro, but keep the damage at a reasonable level.

Certain masterminds can also design their build to tank, although they have issues holding aggro if they don't take provoke due to their lower threat level.

Yes, I've heard the developers intended the Mastermind to be a tank, where the pets were disposable. However, in gameplay, this just isn't practical. Resummoning and re-equipping pets is quite end-heavy. Further, certain ranged sets like Mercs, Bots, and Thugs usually like to stay back and blast away, rather than charge in.

In short, they play exactly like their name implies. So, please, stop trying to pigeonhole each AT into another AT. You can, but it works better if you try to make them perform as best as they can within their ability.

On a serious note, it's like everyone else has posted - MM's are henchmen, not pets, and therefore, behave differently.

  5. I'm sure a lot of us are hitting the forums now to see what's going on and kill some time while we wait for the fix.

I had just logged in long enough to Cap Au Diable to have someone drop a monkey (that just sounds twisted). All I managed to do was respond to 1 tell before I crashed, while my other account sat there in relative safety. 30 seconds later, the servers are brought down.

    I have great timing.

    WM/SD builds?

At 35, you can begin identifying IO sets that are very cheap. I've included quite a few of them in the build. Note the taunt set I used. This is incredibly cheap. Some of the other sets I used can be acquired cheaply as well. Cleaving blow has nice endurance bonuses, but requires rare salvage, so you may not want to use that particular one I used. IIRC, Multistrike does not.

Your final build will want to soft-cap your positional defense, which costs a pretty penny. You also notice I began working towards getting tough/weave. You'll want that. Oh, and I probably should have grabbed True Grit sooner as well. :-/

    It's a start.

    WM/SD builds?

If you have a respec option (which you probably do from vet rewards), you'll drop bash for pulverize. I'm also assuming you have veteran attacks. You could also drop haten until after the respec. Once you hit around 35 (next post) you'll actually be looking for cheap IO sets to do frankenslotting. I put a few in the build at 35.

Carry around lucks when you get in tougher fights.

    ^^This.

There are many different sets out there in the 30-35 range that would be comparable to your generic IOs in cost, but would offer better benefit as they enhance more than one aspect, making them more efficient.

I use it only to give negative rep to those I dislike because I am a nice person
Aww, then you don't dislike me. How sweet.
I assume it has more to do with the fact that I've never met you.

I really don't care about rep one way or the other. I'm generally helpful, or I wander over to some AE discussion to farm some post counts, which I'm really not sure why I do that either.
  10. This is just the initial inventory of sales (listed in millions) as I go through my inventory. I didn't have time to play AE over the weekend, but I list a ton of things on the market, so here's the list so far:

    14, 15, 30, 12, 24, 29, 19, 105, 11, 27, 24, 22, 36, 39, 11, 29, 18, 38, 21, 81, 87

    Total: 692 mil.

That does not include the recipes that have yet to sale, nor does it include any slots that sold for under 10 mil. Not bad considering I did nothing in the game for 4 days. Oh, take a third off of that and you probably will get my profit. Oh, and I haven't gone through everyone yet.

    Overall, not too bad.
  11. From the patch notes: (08/04/09)

    Quote:
If you defeat someone who has recently defeated you, this will no longer restrict you from receiving rewards from the PvP defeat. The PvP reputation timer is now no longer reset from a defeat that doesn't earn reputation.
If I'm reading that correctly, I think a lot of people are going to be very happy.

edit: No, I didn't read that correctly.
  12. I'm not interested in doing it for anything over about a 100% profit. Since I haven't been on in 6 days, I'm not sure where 2XP left the market.

I'll do it for 10 mil, which should cover crafting, salvage and acquiring the recipes, as well as probably rolling a character on a new server. It would be done within 3 hours of accepting the deal with the amount paid up front. That's 51 recipes, which the crafting cost alone should be around 1.5 mil if my math is right (30k per craft x 50).

You can probably get a much better deal, and definitely if you do it yourself.

If you were on infinity redside, the cost would be much lower. But a new server, with characters without the memorized recipes guarantees I'll be spending a good bit of inf to get it done. Not to mention the cost of salvage.

I'm just leery of making any offer right now until I see the market.

    thx
To softcap energy aura, typically Kinetic Combat is used in your melee single-target attacks. The problem is that those recipes can go for what purples used to go for a year ago (up to 35 mil).

Now if you're creative, you can use cheaper sets to achieve the soft-cap, which is what I did for a VG mate of mine. This is an EM/EA build, and it still is expensive, but nowhere near as expensive as it could be had I used other IOs. The biggest difference is 4 sets of Smashing Haymaker being used over Kinetic Combat, which saved probably around 200 million inf.

It's easy to get fury soloing if you are using quick animating attacks. If you're using slow attacks (anything over 1.5 seconds), then of course you will have problems with fury.

If you have a slow animating attack chain, throw brawl in and see if your fury bar starts going up.

So I don't think it's the lack of ability to have female henchmen, but the concern about encouraging polygamy and domestic violence. It's probably the same reason why we don't have whips for dominators.

I'm not asking for a complete customiztion of costumes or anything, just maybe with i16 you could toss some of the customization towards the henchmen.
Oh, I have a feeling it will happen, sometime.
  16. If you are looking for single target damage, Dark/Elec is a very good match. Dark has a good heal, a long duration damage buff (which gets a little recharge bonus from lightning reflexes) and excellent single target damage.

You won't be an AoE monster, but you'll be fairly tough and you won't miss electric's lack of a heal as much with siphon life (which you slot for damage). If you do a lot of solo work, I really would recommend that combo for you if you want to keep electric armor.

    3) The general slotting basics apply. 1-2 Acc, 1-2 Dam, 1 end redux, and one optional rech*

*There are many affordable IOs you can get while leveling up that will drastically improve your performance for a very small price tag. For example, the taunt sets have decent bonuses, and frakenslotting 1-2 of those sets in your attacks can be a very cheap way to get some good bonuses.

    2) Can we have a general idea of the price tag you want?
    3) Is there a good reason why you didn't want to go fire/fire? From a strictly gameplay standpoint, that would be the better choice.

    edit: It's technically FM/ElA, not ElA/Fire.

  20. You've gotten a lot of good advice on this, so I just wanted to also encourage you to check out redside before you delve into AE. If i was going to start a new character redside I would:

    1) Grab the first easy level with the tutorial and get the badge
    2) Finish Burk or Kalinda's mission. You should hit level 5. At this point you're done with Mercy, although Mongoose has some decent stories, you'll be happier heading to Port Oakes now.
    3) Head to port oakes. Do a few papers to get Bocor and maybe Vendetti. Do a bank to get yourself the raptor pack. Bocor should give you Radio. Do that arc.
    4) Look up how to trap ghosts in the fort. It might serve for a little entertainment.
    5) Head to cap and work towards getting Marshall's contact.

At this point your leveling should be a little less hectic, so you can begin picking and choosing contacts. Find ones that interest you. Every contact suggested in this topic have really good stories. There are some lousy ones redside, but there are quite a few gems that you just have to play.

There are very few things in the game that do -perception. Popping a single yellow usually cures that problem. That is a very minor issue compared to survivability, which has been the major concern of this thread.

personally i quite like elm/ela which is the brute i use atm. its pretty and strong =P
That is a description only reserved for Mace/Energy Aura.

pluss i managed to hit the energy res cap, with 40% res on everything else (bar toxic) which im guessing is good when im not using any IO sets, and only have like 3 IO ench's in each armour =P

    /ela is the I win button ^^ =D

on a more seriouse note... /stone looks pretty descent, and has some good synergy with elm's lightning rod as well as some nice PBAOE's that looks tasty no?
I think you're serious, and it freaks me out. Let me offer you some advice as a min/maxer: Elec/Elec is not an unstoppable killing machine. It is certainly fun to play, but there are more survivable sets out there. If one was to spawn just about any map for 8 and have an elec/elec brute and SS/WP brute race, the SS/WP brute would win, while the elec/elec is running back from the hospital.

    To the OP:

I have to know a price tag before I recommend any brute set. If you have the inf, Dark/Shield is quite nice, especially for dealing with AVs. SS/Shield is an atrocity. Elec/Shield is nifty.

I do enjoy electric armor, but I would be lying if I told you it was even close to the best survivable set out there.

This is great news - demand will skyrocket as people rush to slot out their powerlevelled characters. I kind of wish I'd invested a little in commons now.
I expect to make a killing off of the impatient AE players this weekend.
