45-50% Defense significance

I was recently skiming through DEF threads and a lot of people are were citing different reasons to exceed the regular 45% softacap and go into the 50% def.

It was my experience that once you were softcapped (or maybe 1% above it for def debuff padding), you were fine until you fought +6s or ran into +Hit. In which case it is not 50% def you need but 75% to remain capped.

My question is what are the situations for you, SD/SR/EA brutes where 45-50% def rather than 45% would have significant survival impact? Keeping in mind redside enemies and encounters, these are still the brute boards and none of you have gone softie on us and turned blueish "yet".

The 50% for non-SR (or Shields that use SHO/HOs to slot and doublestack Active Defense) is to allow for defense debuffing - most sets will only have around 50% and most defense debuffs are 7.5% for even-con.

With a +3 mob, that's roughly -10%, 50% defense debuff resistance would take that to -5%, which would put you at 45% from 50%...

I'd assume it has something to do with the abundance of To-Hit buffs on red side critters. Most notably Arachnos with the Fortunatas.

I maintain ~53% def on my SR brute to give me safety against def debuffs and tougher opponents.

Oh, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

O.o How?

I'm right at 45% def to all and never notice the defense debuffs during the ITF. 95% DDR will do that for ya, though.

Just exceed the 45% a little and add in slotted weave should get ya that

My /SR is at 46% to all and I never have problems.

My Shield/Fire Tank is only capped to melee/ranged with 41% to AoE and I tanked the ITF like a champ. I do have 3 HO Membranes in Active Defense and enough +recharge to stack it most of the time so I pretty much stay at 95% DDR

I've only got 45 WITH fully slotted weave.

This is what I'm rocking at the moment. I'm working on the Numina's for Health and the KB Prot IO for Bliss of Zeph Set.

Oh, and I was wrong...it's about 55% Defense; I always forget about CJ.

Well I can somewhat understand debuff padding on SD/EA but SR, I have 46.2 def to all one one build and 48% def to all in another and I NEVER see it dip more than 1-2% even after herding the aggro cap of romansn an having superstacks of debuffs.

But to Hit, I was under the impression that +5% more def is laughable to +To Hit which is normally around 20-25%, without any stacking.

That's my understanding as well. ToHit buffs, when you run into them, are usually high enough to seriously mess up a defense based player.

Which is why those packing tohit buffs die first.

My much ignored macro on my SR when we face nemessis: "Lts die LAST or I go solo the other half of the map while you struggle with stacked veng." =(

This for me on any defense based toon.

This is my experience with SD. Don't really need to over-cap SD as you have more than just Defense to protect you. I don't run Active Defense stacks although I do have Hasten and quite a bit of global recharge so it isn't that hard to stack it when I need to. I find activation of AD suck hard if you have a weapon though as redraw gets really old after each AD and Shield Charge.

Also, intelligent use of even the smallest inspirations can easily cover up softcap deficiencies. Don't forget what Bill said up-thread about taking out trouble mobs first too.

On my DM/EA I go and Taunt the mob, then Kill Warhulk/Fake Nem while the Fire/Psis would kill minions and lieuts. (Never really fought Nemesis outside of a Battle for Television farm).

That's the Templar from Aion (the tanker).

The graphics remind me of Aion a little. Could be coincidence though (I haven't played Aion any).

Ah, ok...Cool! I was in on Aion's beta a bit last weekend (when I wasn't participating in double xp weekend! ), and I didn't see anything like that, but... That was probably because I was only in the low-lvl zones/quest areas...

Either way, that's a very cool power... No waiting for groups to gather, just a Mortal Kombat-like "GET OVER HERE!" haha... That's just cool.
