Masterminds--still working on it
Fairly certain this is sort of the wrong forum for this - because in the Suggestions forum, this is a much-and-occasionally-hotly debated topic (in regards to customization and the inclusion of female henchmen in general).
And it reads more like a suggestion in the OP. Still, point is... it's something that's been batted around on the forums a lot, with a number of fairly good reasons that it can't be implemented properly (the call files for summoning henchmen and upgrades, the legal duplicity around the concept of female henchmen, etc.) on either count without a lot of futzing around.
Any given power set from any other archetype can be run many ways. Focusing on AE, Single, emphasizing your control stuff or not, defense vs offense in power picks along the way.
The pet sets kind of create their playstyle and hold you to it, with all the mandatory picks slimming down what else you can take to the bear essentials. The nature of the sets, cramming three pets, two buffs, and a three attack group, is just not conducive to variety. It is my opinion that this should be a dev focus for providing whole new sets, as well as sets in different spirits such as a melee primary with a majority of close combat minions and a trio of close combat attacks for yourself instead of ranged ones.
Shield defense is a good starting point. IMHO You've already got the groundwork for passive AE buffs in the shield set that could be combined, the cool shield charge move, disorient bash, a simple one-two attack combo with a set weapon type. Or just open up the other hand to 'any' one handed weapon graphic. Why restrict it when the shield can do all your themed moves and the other hand just needs to hit things?

The only reason I haven't played a mastermind past level 15 is the limited amount of customization they have.

There are no female henchmen-- this could be fixed by allowing us some carnie henchmen or something of the like. |
So I don't think it's the lack of ability to have female henchmen, but the concern about encouraging polygamy and domestic violence. It's probably the same reason why we don't have whips for dominators.
Costumes- Even if there weren't a set of female henchmen; allowing Masterminds to customize the gender of each henchmen, or even chage the color of the costumes, would be a huge jump forward. I'm not asking for a complete customiztion of costumes or anything, just maybe with i16 you could toss some of the customization towards the henchmen. |
A couple things from the Comic Con panel:
They'd like to do MM pet customization, but it definitely won't be for I16. For the human type pets, they could conceive of sort of a dumbed down version of the character creator with limited options. No promises though. There was some suggestion that this could include female minions if it happens though.
There was also a hint about demon summoning having whips.

Muahaha! Well polygamy and dometic violence are villianous deeds, and should be implemented with Masterminds!
No, it's understandable. Wouldn't want a Pimp Named Slickback roaming through Grandville.

Female slaves are bad, but male slaves are okay? Way too double standard. I don't buy that as a reason. At least not a fair one. If they want baby steps maybe start with female zombies. Not a lot of sexual tension there.
And I'm pretty sure Singularities are girls. Just a gut feeling. <.< >.>

And for the record, I think singularities are asexual.
But anywho... I think the only way I could get into a mastermind is to be able to customize the minions. Maybe I'll try out zombies with i16, since you can at least change the colors. Or... maybe when Rogue comes out.

For what it's worth, here's a quote from the City of Heroes: Issue 16 Comic Con Interview on MMORPG.com
"The summons will take on the color palette of the summoning spell," continued Matt, "and some powers, like energy and fire, will have additive or subtractive colors in the effects." Masterminds, however, will have a larger palette of colors for their pets, and this will not be included at launch of build 16 but will come later on down the line. |
Well thank you. You just made my day

Well there already exists, in game, a female pet if you go with Ghost Widow patron. Maybe the Coralax too, who can tell?
I have a feeling the "explanations" I've seen listed for not having female henchmen is pure speculation. If you want to make a pimp with a ho, there's nothing stopping someone from doing it now, they just have to wait until level 47.
Global = Hedgefund (or some derivation thereof)

Can I get some back-up on this?
