A CoH sourcebook for Hero system? Not that it's all that difficult to do it now, though.

Quote:Is this with a ranged attack? It's not what zone *you* are in, it's what zone the mob is when it falls./\ this is exactly what I mean. When you get the music and fade-in text on your screen saying you're now in such and such neighborhood and then you plop "straight" down on the ground (not cruise 10ft. or 50ft more but straight down) and start your "Defeat so many so and so's" and don't get the kill credit, then somethings amiss. I guess I am kinda glad that others have observed this and I wasn't loosing my mind. If they wanted to fix this, then instead of it being "Defeat 20 Red Caps in The Broken Teeth" it could just be "Defeat 20 Red Caps". As long as you are in Croatoa. I think there a lot of mish'es outside of Croatoa that embrace this philosophy because of the mash of neighborhoods in various zones and the contact will normally tell you the best place or neighborhood to find these foes.

On teams, the groups I play go with rule of 'fortune the person below you on the team window, bottom fortunes the top". Cuts down on confusion about who fortunes who considerably.

Quote:I can't click on anything in the launcher. The launcher only appears for a fraction of a second, then it goes away and test server starts to load. Not long enough to click on anything, and not enough time to check it's properties.Make sure you are running the "CITY OF HEROES" game in the Launcher, not "CITY OF HEROES TEST".
Also, right click on the game in the Launcher and check the properties and make sure the "Install Location" is correct. If not, just click the Browse button and point it to the right place. -
Quote:How do I stop my new launcher from launching the Test server by default? Very annoying...
BRC
Have the same problem here. Downloaded the new launcher, and can't launch anything but test. A "cancel" button appears briefly, and it looks like I'm managing to click it before it goes away, but it goes ahead and launches onto Test, anyhow. -
Well, I downloaded it. If I click on it, it automatically launches the CoH test server, and then the launcher turns itself off. Can't click on it fast enough to make it do anything else.
So, assuming I wanted to play on a server OTHER than test, what do I do? -
Quote:What? No FSM?Jack Emmert (Statesman) was really, really into Roman Mythology when he started designing this game. His handprint is very visible still, even though he left years ago. That's why it's so prevalent.
As for you question.
I'd like to see touches of Nordic, maybe Odin and Ragnarok.
Hints of King Arthur and his whole legend.
Legendary monsters (non combat badges i.e. Sally)
Spot Bigfoot wondering around the maze in Perez 3 times for a badge.
Maybe have the chupacabra running amok in Nerva... -

An "Aegis Cruiser" would be a Ticonderoga-class. These things look more like Burke-class destroyers, which are also equipped with the Aegis system. The two types of ships look very similar, however. They're based on the same hull.
-
Quote:That is very much a (simplified) Burke-class. It's missing the hexagonal bit that's the antenna for the SPY-1D radar, which I find a bit of a letdown (that radar is the basis of the Aegis combat system, which is more or less the point of having the ship) but that's because I'm picky about such things. That ship reminds me of the Arleigh Burke class destroyer.
My wife and I once had a picnic lunch on the fwd missile doors on one of those while it was under way. Long story. -

I'm hard-pressed to think of a single instance where an 80s cartoon property was rebooted and it wasn't handled with care--and, dare I say it, sometimes came out a lot better than the source material. The people who reboot these shows, thus far, obviously have a lot of love for these series and have done right by them.
I say, give 'em more. Reboot Centurions. Reboot Bravestarr. Reboot Bionic Six. Reboot M.A.S.K. Reboot Jem--well okay, no, don't reboot Jem. It's too fantastically 80s and it should be left preserved in all its glitz and glam awesomeness. -
Quote:You could argue that Han started off as a Rogue, but had changed alignment to Hero by the end.Han Solo was a rogue. Proof: He shot first! Later on, he used his roguish talents for the benefit of the Rebel Alliance. A rogue, working for rebels!
I say that depends on the rogue. Remember that the Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #34 is "War is good for business," but Rule of Acquisition #35 is "Peace is good for business." -
In a more 'realistic' SF universe, perhaps. But FTL seems pretty trivial in the BG universe- even the little combat shuttles can do it, and those things seem to run on fuel that isn't that much better than Jet-A.

Well, there is always "Big Ears, Small Mouse", from WhiteWolf :-)
Have used rats in P-n-P Champions games. Now, these were high-tech rats, piloting miniature armored vehicles, fighter planes, and six-foot-tall "giant robots". But they *were* rats. Some even went independent and formed their own hero group (the Rodent Defense Service). -
I did experience a CoH-like moment in RL a while ago.
Took a trip to DC with some relatives. Staying in a hotel near a Metro station; with the intent of taking the metro to visit the Smithsonian. The group left the hotel. Partway there, I realized I'd forgotten the camera back in the room, so I ran back, got it, and then ran like mad to catch up before they got on the train. While I was wishing I had Superspeed, that wasn't the CoH moment.
The CoH moment was when I turned off the sidewalk a little too soon. Ran smack into the inside corner of a bus stop shelter. -

Quote:What you're asking for is a basic component of most pen-and-paper superhero RPG's, such as Hero System, GURPS, etc. Most have the concept of 'disadvantages', that make characters weaker in some ways in exchange for being stronger in others (for a point-based system, disads give more points). For a p-n-p game, it can work quite well.Vulnerabilities are a staple of comic book lore. Oh, sure... not everyone has them. But the closest we have is certain resistance sets having less protection against specific kind(s) of damage such as Invulnerability's lack of defense or resistance to psi damage. I don't consider that a weakness, though, so much as it is just a hole in the character's defense.
And everyone may not like the idea of having an additional element to which their character is suddenly vulnerable to. But what about those who are looking for something like that?
My recommendation is new IO sets that give the player a noticeable hindrance with two enhancements from a given set, and then reward the player with bonuses at three and more from the set. And because we're taking a penalty to something up front, the rewards later on should be more appreciable.
Let's say I want to make a character that's flame-based and want him to be vulnerable to cold. As it stands, unless you make a melee character with the fiery aura set, you're as vulnerable as anyone else to cold attacks. But let's say they make a ranged damage set that throws a -10 to 20% resistance debuff to cold attacks when you have two from the set. You could really gimp your character to ice attacks if you slot this set in more than one power. But at the cost of becoming more vulnerable to that, perhaps one of the bonuses for having three or more in the set is a boost to fire-based attacks... a noticable defense or resistance bonus to fire attacks... or a chance of a fire damage proc each time the power affects your target.
And that's just with fire and ice in mind. If you do this with the various damage types, players could better customize their character's weaknesses and strengths at the same time. I'm sure there will be arguements about how such an idea could be abused to min/max and create uber powerful characters... but aren't we getting that anyway with the IO sets as they are? With hindrances to balance out the gains, its just a matter of someone crunching the numbers when creating such sets to make sure things are balanced properly.
But it would be a nightmare to implement on an MMO. Disads open up whole new aspects to min/maxing. It can be acceptable in a pen and paper game, where a live GM is looking at every character and setting up each game session with the specific characters playing it in mind. That does not work in this setting. -
Well, the price of a photocopier would go up REAL fast :-)

Quote:And sometimes I've died with a partially empty tray that is promptly filled from teammates' defeats. Pity how it never seems to be a wakie. While true by and large, I feel the need to justify being occasionally dead with a full tray. Sometimes, not only does everything go sideways, it goes there in the space of a blink. Happened to me last night, the Brute went in, my Dominator self followed, and every enemy in the spawn decided I was by far the more dangerous target. In the red in one hit, dead 1/8th of a second later.
Naturally, assuming the above will happen, and therefore popping things pre-emptively, ensures nothing ever happens to you at all. Then the game picks that time to give you nothing for your trouble, so now you're out.
Maybe I'm behind on my sacrifices to RNG. Or it's sheep kind of god and I've been providing goats. -
Quote:He called it a minor upgrade to one set of mission maps (I think he called it a "tray" of maps, or something like that, then mentioned that he was using an internal developers term). Gave the impression it was something like "the office maps" or "the blue cave maps", but did not say which set.I can't make sense of this. If there's a single update affecting all mission maps, then it's hardly minor. Maybe it means there's a new tileset coming?
What in the world can this mean?
I'm very excited by the mention of 'new systems' that are going to require more Beta time. Content, powers and zones are all great, but new systems are what really keep the game fresh. So, I'm guessing that 'casual paths' means some sort of non-combat advancement or other downtime activity.
It was a *minor* change, though. Could be as minor as something like swapping out the CRT monitors with LCD's (That is a wild guess on my part). -

Quote:They specifically noted that the NDA-controlled CB for Issue 20 stuff will be BEFORE the regular beta for 19. They admitted that this was odd, but there are a few specific strange things in 20 that they needed tested well in advance.I'm trying to see if Ransim mistyped. If the I20 CB does start next week, then either I19 won't have a CB phase, or it's been going on this whole time without an announcement.
There will presumably be a more normal beta for 20 after 19 is out. -
Just how long do the batteries last on any of those things? Do they make an 'extended life' battery, even it it makes the thing thicker or heavier than standard?
-
Quote:I believe there are temp powers associated with those badges that you can loose; that is probably what is confusing the issue. The closest thing I can think of to what you are describing are the alignment badges. There are badges you can obtain by completing a morality mission for an alignment and staying that alignment for 7 days.
You will not lose these badges if you switch sides again.
