Hi, i've just downloaded the COH client and have fully updated it. But i have a problem... I created my account on the PLAyNC page and i tried to log in the game with my account name and password, wich i chose on the Play Nc page... but when i entered the login and password it said me that i had entered wrong login or pass... i've already tried to change my password but it has no results.. It's a bit strange that i have registered on the boards using this account without any problems... can somebody help me with this please?

This is a common problem and is caused by a bug in the installer which creates a shortcut to the US version of the game. Right click your shortcut and go to Properties. In the target line, it's probably pointing to "CohUpdater.EXE". Change this so that it's pointing to "CohUpdater.EU.EXE", click OK, and all should be well.

thx, now everything is ok =)

To be frank I wouldn't even call this a bug; a bug's where code doesn't work as you though it would, or you've made a mistake in the design in some way. In this case the installer's working exactly as intended, and after this long and this many reports on the forums they must know how it's working.

Not having put a proper, EU-capable, version in place is simply poor distribution practice, customer relations and QA, in roughly equal parts.

I tried what was suggested, changing the target to CohUpdater.eu.exe, and it tells me that the name specified is not valid Any other ideas?

Have you looked in your installation folder to see if the file is actually present? If it's not, there's a sticky guide at the top of this forum telling you what to do to fix it.

Hey yeh you said somthing about the instalationn folder where abouts would i find that?

The installation folder is the one that the game files are installed in - if you look in your program files folder, you should see one called "City of Heroes".

Also, welcome to our three new players

If you didn't change it from the default, it will be at "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes"

It's all explained here:

Thanks for the links K, but from the number of posts we get here from people who finish up unintentionally trying to connect to the US servers there is an ongoing problem here.

Given the global nature of the internet it's all too easy for someone to download the wrong version of an installer (or get one passed on from a 3rd party, provenance unknown) and once you've done this it offers no help at all recovering from connecting to the wrong server.

Immediate thoughts on possible ways around this are:

1) The easy one - ask. Check which servers the user wants to use, and set up updater and shortcuts appropriately.

2) Check the computer's regional settings, and in most cases this'll give an obvious best choice for the servers to use.

3) Set up shortcuts for both sets of servers, so the user can see what's available and be fully aware of which they're connecting to.

...all trivial to implement (I've had experience of this sort of thing). In particular the thing to bear in mind is that users don't read instructions and often have very little idea of how to do anything other than double-click an icon to open a program or document. Asking people to make their own shortcuts and assuming they'll do it right is asking for trouble, and given how easy it is to do that programatically, completely unnecessary.

So essentially I'll stand by my earlier post when I said there's a problem with setups that really should have been sorted out by now. Doing so wouldn't be difficult, and would save a good bit of hassle for new players.

Do you think you could make this post again as a sticky in the Technical or New Players section? I think it'd help a lot.

@GG: I think it'd be a good idea to rewrite the installation guide with clearer information on where to find the EU client.

@Standoff:

Just to give you a counter-example:

1 + 3) With the separation of EU / US servers due to business decisions that could probably lead to confusion. If the person installing the game then assumes he could play on both sides of the pond, and then has to find out that this doesn't work...

2) Tricky. E.g. At home I'm still using my old PC with German language settings. When I tried to start an newly bought game, it didn't work - for business reasons they decided to check that the UK version only runs on UK machines.

I understand why the higher-ups prefer having two different installers - one for the EU servers and one for the rest of the world. And while this is not the best decision ever made, it's far from being the worst.

The problem is, Kerensky; that a lot of the time, the EU installer is setting up a shortcut to the US game. THAT'S why we keep getting people with this query.

But until it's rewritten, couldn't you make this a sticky?

Oh oh... I am sorry, FFM, I haven't noticed that before.

So, yes, I'll sticky this thread then.

I've recently recommended this game to two people i know and both have had login or game loading problems. One of them had to go through the install again, downloaded the whole 2+gig and then still had problems, so promtly gave up and went back to playing his console.
Can't blame him. This sort of thing really annoys folk and i find the "verifying files" really annoying. It shouldn't be automatic imo.
The other person is more patient and hopefully will try again......fingers crossed.

I still don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've looked at both stickies and done everything there. I've downloaded the EU client updater, copied it into the folder in Program Files. I've changed the shortcut so that it runs the .EU.exe file. I'm able to log onto the forums, but for some reason it keeps on telling me my username and/or password is incorrect.

Paste the target line from your shortcut properties here, so we can take a look, please.

Also, I'm using a trial account (which is active--I just checked my account information). Would that make any difference?

Ah, there have been issues in the past with trial accounts unable to log in. Raise a support ticket through the PlayNC knowledge base section (Ask a question), and they should be able to sort it for you.

Ahh, ok. I'll try that. The username/password I use to sign into my PlayNC account is the same I use to sign into CoH, right? Or could they possibly be different?
