  1. For my first character, rather than try to wade through the thousands of primary/secondary combinations, I just based my first character off of Garen, from League of Legends - Broadsword/Regen.

It seems that EVERYONE is claws/regen, so I must have drank slightly the wrong water, but nevertheless I feel like it's a pretty effective character. He's very difficult to kill, a little underwhelming in the DPS department, but Hack does very satisfying things to enemy health bars.

I've built several Mids characters to 50 with IOs and set bonuses and everything all planned out, but I'm quickly realizing that as a new player, those builds quickly become irrelevant as I learn how the character REALLY works and that set IOs are rather expensive. I have eight fully completed builds, 7 of which are already irrelevant in the face of major changes they'd need. Maybe if I get some external input from experienced players, and worry a little less about squeezing in 5 LotGs which I may or may not ever get around to purchasing, I can actually hang onto this build as a guide when leveling.

So here's a skeletal Mids build, unslotted - please let me know if I'm skipping most of the right powers to skip, taking most of the right powers, and whether I've concentrated my slots in the best stuff. Thanks!

  2. I was convinced that my scrapper would be my main, then I got tired of having powers with no special effects beyond their damage.

I thought that I'd fall in love with masterminds, then got tired of scampering about doing very little of note and waiting for my pets to win the fights.

I figured if I stuck with a defender, I'd always be popular and useful to groups and could level just by slutting myself around to anyone who'd group with me.

With the blaster/blaster/squisyDPStanker group that I most frequently team with, my defender's heals aren't remotely good enough to keep them alive - I apparently need knockup/knockback/holds more than I need an AoE heal and debuffs.

I've also dabbled in WS (too squishy), PB (too boring), Widow (great solo, nobody to play with redside)...

Long story short, I kinda know how you feel and am worried I'll get dissatisfied with Controller sooner or later.

Is that why some people only have 2 options in their right-click Global Friends menu and the rest have a full suite including the all-important Add/Edit Note? Are there any known workarounds?
  5. Do we have to join the SG to run with the Isolators? I'm nominally part of one already. Not that there are ever enough people on to do anything more than can be achieved with the LFT window, but the SG leader is pretty chill and a friend of mine.
  6. EmperorSteele and Oedipus_Tex, thank you for taking the time to explain where Terror1 has a point and the basis for his views as well as the ways in which that viewpoint is limited, insufficient, or glossing over certain things. Very helpful for someone like me who likes Controllers, hasn't tried a Dominator, but has been wondering what the real in play difference is beyond the hover-over descriptions of Dominate and Containment.

Veritable "sticky post" informativeness laid out in a rather concise and fair manner. Sounds like two great classes!
  7. Captain Havana has reached 20 and eagerly awaits the Isolators' arrival in the real world / rogue isles!

We only needed him flying long enough for screenshots.
    So... about those screenshots?
  9. No worries, cap, I'm somewhat of an information addict. I tend to read about my games more than I play them, unless I make a concerted effort to stop reading. I was still reading about WoW for 6 months to a year after I'd quit playing.

...on which note, I'm off to play my painfully ineffective MM through a cool-sounding MA arc I've just read about. Must remember to buy wakies this time. Thanks for the info dump; I'm glad my query happened to be timely!
  10. That is a pile of information. I have some reading to do. Thanks!

(If you're gonna have the vanity quote in your sig, pretty please link it to the quote source so we can bask in the sick-ness?)

Having tried Plant, not tried Mind yet, little interest in Fire, and being unlikely to invest in IOs for some time, I think the Mind one is likely next on my list of controllers to try. (Currently doing a very powerful-feeling grav/storm, and a "feed my thirsty roots"-themed plant/kin. Don't know if it's optimal but I really like the theme of trapping, entangling, and draining as opposed to the more lifebloomy feel of Plant/Storm.) Soft-capped Bots/Traps is somewhere on my to-do list, albeit quite some time away. Probably tanky enough but with weaker control than Bots/FF.
  11. Some really cool suggestions in this thread - the random chaos one sounds like a lot of fun, and the pulsing zone could make the powerset much more tactical and masterful feeling.

Mildly worrisome that my primary Controller's primary powerset is widely seen as underwhelming but meh... I love it. Tossing enemies up into the air isn't something you get to do in many games, whereas setting them on fire or chopping them up is really, really common. Been there done that. Gravity is cool.

Quick off-topic question: Raptor Pack uses one's run speed? I assumed it used one's jump speed due to the character making the "HOO!" jumping noise when Raptor...ing.
  13. Having had some time to check out CoH, and having dabbled in a little bit of everything, I feel that no AT makes me feel Like Unto a God as much as a Controller does.

Even without Hasten, I have pretty much every creature Immobilized, 2 or 3 creatures Held, and 1 or 2 creatures suffering from a Knockup/back/down effect that neuters them every bit as well as a Hold. It gets me to kinda feeling invincible... right up until a bad string of Misses or something like that. Sure, my regen scrapper will reach 50 first because he's "ezmode", but at that point I suspect he'll largely become a Wentworth's bot.

Anyway, I didn't mean to rant about how awesome my character is. Really, I suspect that every Controller is equally awesome or better than mine, and I'm nothing more than a recent, exuberant convert to the playstyle. What I really want to know, in the likely event that I create more Controllers or maybe even the occasional Dominator, is whether the "Wartroller" concept still floats around. I read a years-old post by Whisperwind that sounded rather cool and exciting, but it mentioned "six-slotting" frequently, which I hear is a thing of the past, along with selecting Fitness as a pool power. Do mind or illusion controllers still have the capability to rival Warshades for all-in-one awesomeness, these days?
  14. Hell yes! Both because redside needs more love, and also because my MM never has anyone to group with. Hm, those are kinda related.
  15. Are you guys going blue or red after hitting 20?
  16. A CoH2 would not be unwelcome. Character creation, and character powers, and travel and tailor options and so on, are AMAZING. This is the best character creation and character growth I've seen in a game.

But externally, the missions are all incredibly samey. I've seen a lot of more interesting quests and objectives in other MMOs. I'm sure there's an engine limitation at fault where they really have no other option than to send us off to kill X of Y or steal the Z. A CoH2 could leave more room for interesting things to do.

Aw man, now I'm going to be compelled to explore nooks and crannies again. There was a mish recently that had cured me of the habit - I completed all the objectives but saw there was an offshoot tunnel deeper in. Turned out to just be a dead end with a few extra enemies.

Dark Melee lacks AoE attacks, so you would have to depend on Burn and your epic pool.

There was a Fire/SS thread recently about soloing ITF. Just be aware that it isn't the only combination capable of doing that.
I tend to group at every available opportunity even on characters that are perfectly capable soloists. My first interactions with AE resulted in a lot of dirtnaps for my MM, so I don't go there much. I did read that thread, I think, but it was more "interesting" than "relevant". Rather than make a finely-tuned soloist, I'd be more interested in a good blend of damage, aggro, resilience, etc to be of use to any random team. As far as I can tell from reading and looking at Tomax, fiery aura alone gives you a leg up on soloing due to other sets typically being slow killers.
  19. Don't worry! The mercs/TA I'm playing has more than enough cred to go around, being that it has no healing abilities nor one of the top pet sets. I might take a personal attack, or even two, on the demon if I ever get worried about not hipstering or emoing (or other hated subculture of the month) enough!

I play a couple other games with similar mechanics. One "why" answer is because linear advancement makes higher numbers exponentially more useful (see also - the goofy way defense works in this game. Going from 0 def to 5 is not terribly noteworthy, but pushing up from 40 to 45 is godly.)

It helps to look at it differently. You aren't 100% resistant to disorients. Instead, you recover from disorients 100% faster. Let's pretend disorients are poop. Someone throws 100 seconds of disorient on your face. A normal person removes 1 poop per second, recovering from poopiness in 100 seconds. You, however, are awesome - you have 100% better poop-cleaning ability. Therefore, you remove 2 poops/sec, and are free in 50 seconds. Someone with 200% faster recovery from disorient / poop can remove 3 poops/sec, and is in the clear ~33 seconds in while you and that lamer in the corner are still recovering.

You could call this "diminishing returns", or you could say that the game's description of this ability is an entirely obtuse and unhelpful way of describing the ability - whatever the game may say about "resistance", we who are in the know are aware that actually each 1% is an increase to the speed at which you shake off status effects.

    Fiery aura/

Grey Pilgrim's guide has sold me on the Fiery Aura powerset, however fire/fire seems a little too plain and obvious for my tastes, plus he admits to not taking all too many of the /fire powers.

For something more fun, I was thinking Fire/stone for fun times with PBAoEs - the knockup helps keep the foes around and I have loved seeing foes slammed around on my Grav Controller. As far as hurl stone, I love taking enemies out of the air and find it to take all the annoyance out of otherwise pesky flying mobs.

I was also considering Kinetic Melee - Siphon Power looks like a more interesting version of Build Up, and reducing enemy damage is likely to be helpful in ameliorating the lower defenses/resists of Fiery melee vs other primary sets. Kinetic Melee is hard to get good info on as it's still relatively recent.

Any suggestions, links, or information that would help me decide would be great!
  22. I seem to be on the wrong server... everyone is on Virtue or Union?

Gallio has a lot of RP potential, but the only RPer I've met was redside and zany. Does anyone know of any active RPSGs on Victory?
  23. Hm. I have used red quite a few times, but not black & red. Nevertheless, I would say yes, I am proud of spending hours making unique costumes that would not blend in with Standard-Issue Arachnos.

Captain Havana is olive & brown with maroon accents (and sweet shades, which I guess are black but don't really count). Annie Darkchild is red, magenta, and purple. The Penitent is red and metallic gold.

Warshades feel pretty dark, so I did go maroon & navy with black accents for him. He looks fairly villainous but certainly would stand out from all the Arachnos wannabes I see redside.

(Also I would love to see or hear more about Bible Boy if you have any links to his story, look, or playstyle!)

I second this motion! There are not yet any female henchmen to my knowledge, which leaves many masterminds' needs not cared for.

When I upgrade to Going Rogue and get my blasted Praetorians back (it should warn you, when you are a trial acct, that some of the features you're using will be disabled when you upgrade!) I will probably still play my Demons/Pain MM. The main reason I'm not is because he's not available to me at the moment - it was a tad surprising to me that their perfectly humanoid arms and legs had such limitations, but not really a big deal.

I would guess that bots, being not humanoid, would be even more limited? They're probably last on my list regardless due to being so incredibly popular/OP.
