Quote:I've gotta be honest, I stopped reading that thread once it derailed into a discussion about religion. After the way things calmed down in the infamous "hope of haven't given up" thread, I began to notice that a lot of the more heated bickering between Titan folks and those who disagree with Titan, were being blown way out of proportion by a very tiny minority. It's sort of like what happens when someone judges a nation by what a terrorist group (that is not endorsed by the government) does on its own.
Quote:He was getting answers, but for some reason acted like I have some kind of an inside-track on Titan activities. I don't.
I do accept that just because you take an active role in what goes on over at Titan, you're not immediately a governing member, nor are you directly responsible or answerable to every activity by every member, if someone asks (albeit it ad nauseum) what they feel to be a legitimate and direct question, why does it take 3 pages of hyperbole and insults for them to get a direct answer? -
To be fair, most people do. Unfortunately sometimes it's hard to recognise when you're part of a mob and then when it's suggested you might be you act all surprised and go on the defensive.
I personally don't like what a lot of those who fly the SaveCOH banner have become and I don't think they're particularly trustworthy custodians of what the CoH community were supposed to represent. When the SaveCOH movement started it was a way of uniting the understandably disappointed playerbase and to give them a single voice. Unfortunately, as each turn left them with another further disappointment, the tactics employed to try and effect a change of heart just got dirtier and, frankly, more desperate.
I don't know whether the people that are co-ordinating the efforts to save the game officially condone this kind of behaviour, but frankly, I don't think it does them, or us any favours at all.
Whether you agree with AFs posts or not, one thing in that thread became abundantly clear very quickly. There was only one side avoiding the questions and slinging insults, and it certainly wasn't him.
For those of us who don't form part of the highly prolific minority on these boards we see and have seen over the course of the last few years. I think it rather fitting that it should be highlighted in the closing weeks of the game. -
Heh.. it's threads like this which kinda prove he's right.
Still, just 10 days to go. -
The image links to a TSW forum page called guildangels.com
There's a forum there and a post that mentions Nov 30th, but couldn't find any details beyond that. -
I try not to have those kinds of regrets. Like everyone else i make monumental errors of judgement and have those fist in mouth moments but generally as theres rarely anything you can doo about them once theyre done, dwelling on them doesnt generally do you any favours.
Having said that if there is anything i regret its not making more of an effort in the social side of the game. I found as time went on from the heady days of i7 -10 there were fewer people i enjoyed playing with and ever more who just seemed to royally get my back up. As a result i tended to play alone or with my other half and almost actively avoided grouping with strangers because if the inevitable gnashing of teeth that would result. Im sure the good guys were out there somewhere but i was put off making the effort to find them a while ago. -

Meh. Just read that back and it made no sense at all.
Just ignore me. I'm talking out of my "beast of burden". -
Quote:Good luck with that.. I don't think that the CoH devs were any more or less guilty of undelivered promises than any other dev team I've ever seen, although I realise that's a largely subjective opinion.Going to other games. Really 8 years of undelivered promises is quite enough, this time around, I think I'll try finding devs who can walk the walk as well as talk the talk.
Probably better just to play a game you like and base it on what there IS rather than what you're told as a player by the people that make it want you to believe there might be? Some may call me a pessimist; I just prefer to think I've got realistic expectations. -
Quote:Business as usual then?Oh that is pretty easy.
There are a few people cough* Tim the Enchanter* cough * Anyone who identifies with the titan people* cough , who didn't like the conclusions this thread was drawing so they decided to do anything they could stop discussion of why the game died, and why the Titan efforts were a misguided pipe dream.
They couldn't counter the points being made so they trotted out the most inflamatory stuff they could find all the while calling other people Trolls. -
Cheers fella.. don't really use Steam (only installed it to play Skyrim), but will return the twitter followage
-
One question.. if the game is picked up by someone else, aren't they likely to adopt an "all or nothing" approach to whether players are able to keep their characters or forced to start again from scratch? Can imagine the community backlash if a prospective saviour says "oh, theres a group of players who can keep their characters because they used a third party tool that maybe not all players know about. They can keep theirs, but sorry, you can't"
Personally, I'd have thought either they'll ensure the character database is part of the transfer so that everyone keeps their characters, or they'll say everyone has to start again. -
That's easy:
1 - Can be any genre, but not fantasy. Preferably a contemporary / "near future" setting, or full on sci-fi.
2 - Look of the character has no effect whatsoever on its abilities. I don't mind gear based per se, but would prefer a mechanism where the gear didn't govern the look of the character. -
I don't really remember stages 3 and 4, but I reached stage 5 a couple of weeks ago. I think it's far better to concentrate on the positive experience I had in game than to bemoan something that I can't do anything about, or put my faith in something that has very little chance of success in the immediate future (Titan Network, I'm looking at you).
I'm enjoying The Secret World at the moment (very similar feel to CoH, and whilst not a perfect replacement for it, there are many key things I personally think it does better). Also playing MechWarrior Online and keeping a close eye on Otherland.
Look forward, rather than back. Stay pessimistic about possible plans for reprieve and that way you avoid disappointment. -
Stopped using Titan as a source of info a while ago. It seems to be to absorbed in anti NCSoft sentiment (which while some may feel is justified, is not something I really think is healthy nor do I want to be part of) and also with Plan Z, which whilst is a fine idea in theory, I've seen similar projects fall flat on their face after 6 months once the people involved really get a feel for the enormity of the project they're undertaking. Not bashing the efforts, just not pinning any hopes on it at this stage.
My source for info is, and will continue to be largely Twitter. I follow Massively, MMORPG.com and (ironically) The Titan Network as well as a few avid CoHers who will likely post such info when it becomes available. I tend to find it easier to distance myself on Twitter from the petty squabbles on forums, and I know I've been as guilty for getting drawn in to them as much as anyone else.
I stopped tweeting on #savecoh for the reasons I mentioned above, but I do still have it as a column on TweetDeck so I can keep tabs on any developments. (I'm @Volkanik70 on Twitter, in case anyone's interested :P ) -
I only relatively recently got in to badge hunting and demorecording, and they're both things I wish I'd done more of earlier. I will say that if making a movie is something that you wanted to do, it's worth learning the basics of editing demorecorded files, as it's something you'll still be able to do even after the game closes because playing them back and editing them doesn't require the servers to be up.
I wish I'd discovered the joys of dominators earlier too as my earth / earth domi Magneous is actually much closer in concept for the character than Volkanik is! -
Been playing this for about a week and really enjoying it. Loving the contemporary setting and the free form build system is very well implemented. Seems to me that grouping doesn't quite work as well as it does in CoH, but the solo game is enjoyable enough for that to not really matter (at least, that's the way things seem at the moment - obviously I've not seen that much of the game to be able to give an objective opinion.)

Quote:Although you state this is something that is glaringly obvious the tone of some posts seems to indicate (at least to me) that some are trying to suggest that it's transcended beyond that and in some way has elevated to special status. It hasn't. It is what it is and that doesn't change how ever misty eyed and sentimental your approach to itYes. We understand this. Anything else glaringly obvious, that we're already aware, you'd like to enlighten us on?
Quote:If this is all you've made of the game, you have my condolences.
If not, you have my condolences. Nothing sucks more than fair weather friends.
Quote:However, to some people, the pastime engendered an investment (not a monetary one) that significantly exceeded that of "just a game".
Quote:Uh yeah. As someone's who's DONE community building, it just DOESN'T work that way.
Can some of the community transfer to other games and keep said community? Sure. But, over time, the community tends to assume ot ee and more of the characteristics of the new game's community. Or it stagnates into a clique.
Quote:Again, the community can transplant. But it's holding an artificial barrier between itself and the greater game community of the new game.
So you're not really correct here. To your credit, you did try to keep your post somewhat civil. For that, thank you.
I'm not entirely sure why you think that just because I don't agree with a lot of the rhetoric in this post I shouldn't remain civil, so whilst your thanks are appreciated, they're really not required. -
Some of these posts really are quite remarkable. Comparing City of Heroes to whether or not there is an afterlife? Saying your life is a living Hell and using this as a basis for belief in a greater being that refuses to prove its existence?
You know, I think this is why I love the internet. No matter how sad and pathetic you might feel from time to time, you can guarantee there's always at least person much MUCH worse than you.
Whilst I would never call someone a fool for being upset over the forced cessation of something they love, there is a line where this goes beyond enjoyment and enters the domain of unhealthy obsession.
City of Heroes is a GAME. I'm sorry that you don't want to hear this, but that is ALL it is. What some have you have made it or want it to be you should be able to transfer that to OTHER GAMES. If the community of City of Heroes is as incredible as you claim, then that community aspect should be able to transfer to OTHER GAMES as well. If it can't, then maybe it wasn't so great in the first place. -
Tried tsw myself over the weekend. Quite enjoying it although it does have its faults. I like tge skill system the contemporary setting. Not keen on the repetitive missions in the zombie zone (but the implementation of a town suffering a zombie attack is one if the best ive seen) or the grouping mechanic. Three day trial runs out tomorrow but will give it more of a go next month.
I wouldnt take any notice of the system analyzer as its run from the NVidia site and so assumes uf you dont have an nvidia card your machine wont run it which is a bit naff and transparent, frankly -
Im not going to say ive given up im going to see ive refocused my efforts by trying new games instead of trying to breathe life back into an old one. Ive been playing mechwarrior online, rift, the secret world an very much like the look of otherland and the elder scrolls on line. Some of the mechanisms and features in these games really expose coh for what the bottom line of it really is and precisely why its being sgut: because its dated and showing its age.
Those of you who are still unable to cope with its demise emotionally should really do two things. Firstly try other games. Look at the various MMO sites and follow up coming developments because i get tge feeling were approaching and second generation almost and theres going to be an awful lot of choice. With all the different games that are around there will be something thatll grab you. Dont limit yourself to jusr one particular genre.
Secondly if losing a game causes you that much grief and upset you need to take a long hard look at your life. -
Slighty OT, I discovered Otherland over the weekend and after looking at some of the game play videos and other info I really like the look of where RealU are going with it.
It's based on a series of Sci Fi novels by author Tad Williams where the internet is vast network of virtual worlds. The devs are promising the most comprehensive character creator ever and the ability to change your look on the fly.
I love the look and feel, love that it's not yet another cookie cutter fantasy clone, and some of the ideas they're toying with sound fantastic.

Quote:It might be easy and simpleminded, but as Occams Razor states, "the simplest answer to even given problem is usually the correct one."
An easy and simpleminded response is that I am once again charging ahead with ultimate hypocrisy, but I am simply calling out those who have believed themselves so mighty so as to offer their unwanted, unheeded and unnecessary judgements of other people's character. I judge nothing else amongst those of you who've done this other than that your obnoxious judgments have been duly noted and are entirely pointless other than to single you out as people acting like ******** on the internet.
)
Once you and Captain Electric have wiped the backs of your hands, perhaps you both should remember this when you criticise people for having the audacity to have a view point that contradicts your own.
I may not agree with peoples viewpoints or I may question the basis on which they reach them, but I'm damn sure I'm not going to try and prevent people from a) having them and b) expressing them on a public forum. -
Quote:Couple of points of fact here: firstly CoH has been in steady decline for a number of years. There was no plateau of core players that kept it steady. However much this might surprise people businesses tend not to close down a healthy revenue stream without a really good reason. They didn't do it just to spite us.I'm not out for NCSoft blood. I just want to warn people what they might be getting into by investing their time and money into an NCSoft product. NCSoft has shown that they can not be trusted.
I also want NCSoft to figure out that they have done much harm to the community here. We want NCSoft to acknowledge what they have done. Sometimes, when talking doesn't seem to get the person's attention, speaking louder might. If that doesn't work, then a tap to the shoulder. If that doesn't work. You might have to use a 2x4. In this case, the 2x4 is our wallets. If you wish to enable NCSoft to continue to do business as usual, that is your prerogative. We would like for them to actually become a company that actually cares about its customers and not just the almighty dollar (or what ever currency they worship over there). You know, a company like Paragon Studios was before they were suddenly closed down without notice.
As for "focusing my energy on Plan Z", I do not have the programming skills, I do have programming skills (rusty as they may be), to be a meaningful contributor to the efforts of coding whatever they are doing for Plan Z. Therefore, wherever else I focus my energy will be better than getting in the way of the guys that are doing something about Plan Z.
Which, right now, is warning people about NCSoft's penchant for closing down games that are doing well. But, just aren't in line with the company's "redirected focus" of less family friendly Asian grind-fests. And you can't tell me that Blade and Soul is not less family friendly than CoH.
Secondly I would imagine that when NCSoft took the decision to close the game down, the backlash of the players was probably in some respect actually taken in to consideration. Granted, perhaps not on the scale that SaveCoH has evolved into, but I can't believe for a moment that it's taken them by surprise. There was on this basis, probably a contingency to deal with such a thing.
Thirdly, 20,000 people signed the CoH petition. 2,000,000 copies of GW2 were bought within a very short time of its release. That right there is people voting with their wallet. If you think a few cross words on twitter or Facebook are going to sway the tide of the gaming majority then I'd strongly suggest visiting your optician and swapping out those rose tinted specs for a more standard variety. -
This is another one on the list of games to try. Not sure I'm entirely happy with the lack of options to create my own hero, but I'd rather try it first and make an informed decision rather than write it off on that info alone.
