I mean, why would they brag about the successes of the game since Freedom and create content and future content if they were just going to shut it down?

This caught them by surprise as well, almost guarantee it. Would love to get the inside scoop here. Major bummer though. This game is like a second home for me.
For one: everyone inside Paragon Studios didn't know this was coming.

For seconds: even those that knew things were not doing good would still try to paing a positive outlook in the press, as success stories and the like get press and press equates free publicity that may revitalize the game.

The sad thing: biggest barrier of entry for this game has been neglected since launch, the GUI. It's terrible. I got some people to try the game and it's horrendous. There was no way the game would manage to hold on to a significant number of new players with the current horrible GUI even as a free game.

Unless they are a bunch of sadists, there is no other reason to kill the entire studio before a long holiday weekend other than the fact that today was the last calendar day of the month, in other words: Accounting releated.
  4. A boycot tends to be a temporary measure you keep up until the company changes his ways.

There is no changing this, and I am not boycotting. But as far as I can remember this, I wont be giving NCSoft any more money.
  5. Im not going to any other game, there is a thread going on with people listing where they plan to go next.

I already tried the other 2 super hero MMOs out there. Neither clicked on me. I'll just spend some time making my own games.
  6. I also was thinking to try Guild Wars. Heck, I would had bought it today had I not heard this news. I highly doubt I'll be doing that anymore. I may forgive in a year or so, but NCSoft wont see another penny from my pockets.

I think a law was recently passed in California to prevent mass layoffs without a 2 month notice, likely precisely things like this really hurt the economy (big studios shutting down and just sending hundreds to the unemployment lines overnight.)

Not sure if everyone was actually fired, though. If the company had any decency, they likely attempted to accommodate everyone into new positions. I don't think that happened, though.
  8. I'm going to spend more time doing my own games.

I had a long term plan to make an iPhone/Android super hero game, akin to Final Fantasy with turn based system and the like, plus City of Heroes-esque customization although at a cuter level.

I may hasten up those plans a bit.

We can still pretend server shutdown is just the Battalion ship arriving and shooting a big gun at the planet without us seeing them coming. Would not be too different from what happened.

Yea, its all done. End of month too... this sounds like the studio was in huge struggle. Didn't Califorina pass a law recently that forced mass layoffs to require a 2 month head's up?

Anyways, yea I don't expect any event to end the game. Man I'm so ... disapointed.
  11. I have thought this so much over the last 8 years. With the game coming to a close, I guess I just want to say this here where others may actually understand what the **** I’m talking about.

What was so special about this game? What made this game unique?

Was it the active combat? Was it the instances? Was it the costume creator?

It was a bit of all, but I think what REALLY made this game unique was that it never made you feel you were “grinding up” to level 50. Instead, you felt you were “creating” a hero. All of those that ever read a comic and wanted to create a super hero, or villain, but didn’t have the time, talent or money to create a comic/book/movie/etc was just able to create their idea in the game.

We didn’t just made characters… we created heroes. We didn’t just grind them, we envisioned a fantastic and dangerous world from our creation’s eyes.

In other MMOs, you are just one of many adventurers in a quest for power. Here, here we created and then stepped into the shoes of those creations.

City of Heroes: I will miss you so fcking much.

PS: If anyone wants to keep in touch with me, send me a PM and I'll share my contact information.

If anyone in the Maryland-Reiserstown area, let me know and maybe we can make a small party or something.
  12. Just spawn giant Rikti all over the world for the entire last month of game, call them the uncoming storm. Make them win.

Worse. We lost a game and a hobby. They lost their job, their income and their family (work environment like these become family and they rarely survive this kind of shet.) all before a long weekend that many likely had spent some considerable amount of money to enjoy.

On top they all were players, I think a lot of the current dev team was recruited from the player base. At least Hawk and Synapse I think.

This got to be hurting them all bad, worse than we can imagine.

    I am crying.

I am not crying. But given the huge number of memories I have about this game... I got to admit... my eyes are a bit watery.

Carajo... I remember buying this game in an Electronic Boutique in Vega Alta, PR. I was hardcore FFXI player at the time. Horrible game but hey, had that Final Fantasy feel so I loved it. This game got me out of it for good... been ... 8 years? I forget now...

I know the insides of this game better than I known any job I been at. This game has seen me through 3 jobs, 6 moves... 3 of them from one state to another, plus a wedding. Darn... I'm going to miss this cra p.
  15. The way this stuff tends to work... I don't expect the red names to log again. Perhaps Positron may get a chance to say something but I don't hold my breath.

It's very likely everyone is too busy packing their stuff and being escorted out the building.

This. Not because there won’t be any interested parties, but mainly because I get the feel NCSoft is the kind of company that rather kill a game than allow another competitor to be released, even if they profit from the transaction.

For a while now I have been fearing this would happen. The game has indeed been slowly fading away, servers emptier, profit reports smaller... and NCSoft has given a track record already killing games that don't perform properly.

Wish this was SOE... how many years has EverQuest been running now?

I want a story, but not a soap opera.

My favorite comics of all time are Kingdom Come and Walking Dead.

We already have that game. J_B wont accept it, but tankers are already at that point of godliness. Dude with arrow simply comes better equiped for offensive. (Mind you, dude with arrow still can be shot to the face with a shotgun even if he was on his underwear.)

There are plenty of things you have to toss out the window for the sake of balance. It may "make no sense" as you say, but it's required for a game. Result is you can play the dude with arrows or the unkillable machine.

I can roll any random hero, go to a atlas park, and be hit several times by a shotgun to the face. Blast energy out of my hands, defeat said shotgun wielder and just walk away and do it again without any medical attention needed. That’s just "slightly extraordinary"?

Last I check, we worship a guy that walked away from 2 nails, a piece of wood and dehydration.

I'm pretty sure should someone pull the above stunt, he will be worshiped. Unless every single other person does the same, though... and that’s a problem with trying to feel godly in an online game: if everyone else is equally super, then nobody will actually feel super.

Not even Superman spends all the issues fighting gods. The comics (the good ones at least) involve his limitations. The fact that he has human problems. The fact that he can't save everyone.
Last I checked Sups constantly faces Lex in an insanely pumped up power armor, Darkseid, constantly returning Doomsday, among other enemies that can stand toe to toe. The rest is just using soap opera elements to entertain readers. That's one of the many reasons I quit reading XMen back in the day. I don't pay money for a comic book about mutants with super powers to read about their love lives.

    Quote:
Finally, if we decide that "god fighting" is the only way to go, congratulations! You've effectively destroyed most of the comics medium. Most Superheroes aren't at Superman's level; they have extraordinary powers that still leave them vulnerable and capable of vulnerability. How can you build a game where some of the characters are Spider-Men, X-Men and Avengers and at the same time allow for Superman and Silver Surfer? Can't be done. Super-Man makes Spider Man obsolete. The only way you can do it is with writer's fiat. Green Arrow and Bat Man should be burned puddles of pink slime, there's no logical reason why they're needed in a world where there contemporaries can fly past Mach 8, dance on the surface of the sun and hear a baby crying in Seattle. The only reason it works is because the writer's have total control over the story. In a gaming environment you are still left with the problem where you have to pretend that a man with a quiver full of arrows is somehow as worthwhile as a man who can't be hurt by arrows and can snatch them all out of the air. It just doesn't work.
I am not sure how this turned into comic books... this is about the game. The question was: how you make a game where the main character is a god. Would be darn frigging boring if God of War was about this big tough god-killer dude that is sobbing all day about collateral damage and love triangles.

That's a very weak excuse. It was also used for shield def, but shields actually had mechanics issues (taunt aura to boost damage, buffing ally defenses, shield charge AoE insanity)

Not all tanks are loaded with resist. There are def and regen based tankers that would be pulverized the first time they get hit by 2 attacks that are meant to just dent a resist based tanker.

Neither approach has lead to very good games.
Or... you know, you just make them face gods.

In my opinion, giving even level 1 characters the ability to take several hundread bullets and not die is rather godlike. Sure, nothing compared to taking a billion bullets, but I wish I was super enough to take 5 bullets to the chest without bleeding to death at the hand of a random thug.

You can just give it the Energy Aura treatment for Hide, but look for how many issues EA sucked.

Adding a damage buff is thematic with the "offense and utility over survivability" design sets like Fire and Shields have.

Also, Scrappers can be stealthy. Scrappers doesn't mean "Oh hey, I don't know how to sneak up on people" especially when it was Scrappers who had Dark Armor first.
And they got Energy Aura before tanks!

And min/max? I want Ninjitsu for Scrappers, as that may be (sadly) the closest I can ever get to a Positional Defense/Regen(SelfHeal) defense set.
Take it you would LOVE caltrops being swapped for Fast Healing then

Also, Scrappers just have access to attacks I want! For instance...I'd love to reroll as StJ/NIN and have Rib Cracker!

I am curious why that set didnt go for stalkers... there is no DOT... there is the momentum/combo like mechanic but that did not stop Street Justice... /shrug

The only drastic change a Ninjitsu for scrappers would need, IMO, is Caltrops due to Epic redundancy.

The Placate and -Perception debuffs can work for scrappers, and Hide can use a similar mechanic to what is seen in AE: a damage buff that suppresses on attack, doing only the first attack from hide do bonus damage.

I think that one caltrops power can safely be swapped with a passive regen power.

  25. After a huge wave of failures, i managed to get it working by turning off the new application launching features of Mountain Lion, plus making sure to tell the app after launch not to reopen documents.

I am guessing the binaries are not signed with an Apple certificate.

I hope this gets fixed soon. I don't want to keep my computer running in these settings.
