Remember, we cannot have a great party without you, and those who attended made it the great event that it was.

Also, a big shoutout to DJ Posthaste of The Cape Radio, who put on a great show as always!
  2. The Party is on now! Be certain to join us, for the People!
  3. Over 500 million influence worth of prizes will be available!

The green is the part you're referring to and the bolded yellow is what refers to every other game. Furthermore the person who actually wrote the new forum rules is Moderator 08 a.k.a The Ocho. So when he says Discussing another game is not allowed, whether you use the name or not, he is the final authority on how the rules are interpreted.
The part that you posted is exactly what I posted.

I see two statements there. One: Do not discuss any other Video game. Two: Do not compare or contrast CoX to any other game or product.

As long as you aren't trying to compare or contrast CoX to a PnP game, you're fine. Really.

Just because, in the Free To Play thread, Ocho said "game" instead of "video game" does not mean that we cannot discuss other forms of game here. We could talk about CCGs, tabletop RPGs, or board games here, so long as we do not compare and contrast.

If I'm wrong in my interpretation of that, I'm sure it will be pointed out. But tabletop game talk has been here since the new forum rules were put in, and I'm not aware that any of those threads were locked or deleted because of their subject matter.

  6. Comrades! I apologize for the late notice, but this Sunday is the 93rd anniversary of the Revolution!

In the spirit of camaraderie, KGB Special Section 8 cordially invites all to join us for the festivities in Gemini Park this Sunday, at 6:00pm EST, for our Fifth Annual Communist Party!

There shall be music, provided by DJ Posthaste of Virtue's Finest Propaganda Organ, The Cape Radio! There shall be food and drink, and probably dancing! There shall be contests with a variety of prizes!

All proceeds from the event go to support the King's Row Community Service Soup Kitchen, and the Skyway Free Clinic!

All of these forums fall under the general topic of City of Heroes. However, we do allow a wider variety of discussion topics in the Comic and Hero/Villain Culture forum and on the server forums. We encourage non disruptive off topic discussion in those forums along the line that fits with the community of posters who frequent them. Political, religious, the aesthetics of the human form (particularly that of models, actors or actresses), real world topics or any videogame (aside from City of Heroes) topics are not allowed. Also, please do not compare or contrast City of Heroes to any other game or product, as that is a violation of this rule and is not allowed.
Actually, Forbin, the guidelines specifically state the mention of any other video game. It's spelled out like that.

So, if we wanted to talk about chess, or Candyland, or Champions the pen and paper game, it's all kosher. As long as you don't try to say "Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 has better mechanics or graphics than CoX," that is.
  8. The Beatles? Meh.

But, I do believe that if anyone could have pulled off LotR back in the 60s, it was Kubrick.

    Now, for the casting call...

    Steve McQueen as Aragorn?
    Ann Margaret as Eowyn?
    James Garner as Boromir?
Christopher Lee as Elrond? Nah, we'll still let him rock Saruman.

I submit that it could have been awesome.

Done. You've hit the soft cap. Everything else is gravy.

Good on you for being able to afford five sets of Gladiator's Strike.

Oh, that's right, it doesn't. You were replying to someone who said that a Superman brought up in 21st century Kansas could gain a solid moral compass, just as he was given one in 1950s Kansas. Your reply? A gratuitous slam on modern-day Kansans.

An Elseworlds title featuring a Soviet-raised Superman is a different animal entirely.
...It was just as likely that he could have gotten a solid moral compass in Soviet Russia, as well. Or are you saying that there were no good, honest people in Soviet Russia? That's a pretty broad brush.

Since this title seems to have everything in common with an Elseworlds title, I have chosen to look at it that way. Since we're looking at 21st century Kansas as opposed to 1950's Kansas, it is quite reasonable to look at the national headlines that have come out of Kansas since the 1950s, particularly within the last 20 years or so. If you're going to change Superman's origin for the purpose of this tale, you would almost have to.

I'm sorry if I make a judgment based on national headlines out of Kansas. But, as a writer, if I'm going to change the origin of a character, I'm going to look at the setting and take the most controversial and interesting aspects. And the modern, 21st century Kansas that emerges is a much different beast than the mythic 1950s Kansas of Superman's origin.

If you're not going to change anything, why bother? It'll just be the same Superman with different dates.

Common sense tells us that the opposite is true.

Just think about what's changed in the last 60 years. Think. If it was plausible that Ma and Pa Kent were upstanding, virtuous people back then, it's equally plausible now. Thus, your thoughts on the current political climate are irrelevant.

And thus, yours is a gratuitous (and ineffectually ambiguous) political cheapshot. In future, if you think that you you have to preface your post with a skirting-the-rules disclaimer, then it's probably not a good idea to post it. It's sorta like saying, "No offense, but ..." What follows is rarely polite or constructive.
How dare I point out that it is well established that Superman is often defined in other worlds by the place where and people by whom he is raised.

This isn't to say there wouldn't be changes to his personality, or that it wouldn't be possible for him to remain the Clark Kent we've come to know.

Though, is this suppossed to be DC's version of Marvel's Ultimate line?
The 'moral compass' of such a Superman in modern Kansas would be a drastically different from the original Superman.
  15. To whoever thought this was a good idea:

This is bad, and you should feel bad.
  16. Hell, I'll give it a go.

The tabletop gaming group I have found in my new home of Port Angeles is... not the best fit for us. I'd like to find another group or form one.

The game itself can be whatever you want - I'm not too picky about system or setting. What I am looking for in a group is a mature group that can handle the fact that we have a 15 month old munchkin.

So, if you're marooned on the Olympic Peninsula by circumstance or choice, let me know, and my wife and I can try to set something up. Hell, if you're a Canadian from Victoria, you're welcome too - the ferry drops off only a couple miles from my home.

Though your analysis of the defects of the skill challenge system is spot on. The problem with how it works is that by the very nature it reduces randomness in favor of skill ranks.

Whoever designed skill challenges was math challenged. It's a really horrible mechanic.
Fortunately, if you find skill challenges lacking, there is almost no reason you can't substitute in your favored skills system, because skills are largely divorced from combat in 4th edition.

The power lasts for 20 seconds, and each of the individual stacking buffs lasts for 10 seconds.

So, you'll have damage buffs for about 30 seconds. The first bit you'll have your damage ramping up until you have the 5 buff stack, then it will stay consistent, then after power siphon runs out, the buffs will begin to expire and your damage will ramp down.

Basically, just keep attacking. You might want to monitor your damage bonus under combat attributes to keep track of it.
  19. I've seen pictures of it, and read a description, but never seen it before.

    Thanks.
  20. Tem Rei, Amuro's dad from the original Gundam.

Gendo Ikari - Not only completely distant and borderline abusive, he did not even manage to turn his son who he believed to be the only hope of humanity into a damned Spartan.

Oberon (Amber) - encouraged his children to plot against and kill one another.

Young Indiana Jones was much like The Lonesome Gods - the one Louis L'Amour book I read on the recommendation of my father in law - too interested in the historical research to remember to have fun with it.

Not really the same, as /Elec has nothing even remotely equivalent to burn.

My pick would be elec/fire or spines/fire.

    Driving.....

I was driving with a couple of passengers, on my way for an evening out.

I was coming up to an intersection, where I was the first at the limit line. I'd come to a complete stop, because the light had turned yellow.

I look over to the gal in the passenger seat, and say, "Huh, isn't that funny, the city bus in the right lane just ran the red light." I turn my head to look forward again, and WHAM! I'm shoved several feet into the intersection.

A van had slammed into the rear of my stopped vehicle at about 35 miles per hour. When we pulled off the side of the road, and traded insurance information with the (much older) driver, the words that came out of his mouth?
"I thought you were going to run the red too."

He'd realized I wasn't going to move too late; he'd tried to pull around me, but hit with the corner of his bumper dead center in my trunk. Totalled the nicest car I have ever owned.

I called it a DWS offense: Driving While Senile. I am very much a proponent of licenses that have to be renewed with a driving test every year for people over a certain age. Yes, that age would include my grandparents, but I'm comfortable with that. If you're over 75 or so, you should have to renew every year; I don't care about the 'loss of independence' thing that older drivers complain about. I'd rather you were dependent than a hazard on the road.
  24. I believe that Svanberg is correct. Fun fact: it was originally published under a pseudonym.

Heinlein later revisited the concept with the short story "All You Zombies," as well. But that was clearly an example of post-Stranger in a Strange Land Heinlein.
