So how is SD/FM?

Hey all, as I've stated recently in the past lol, I've been itching to roll a good Tanker...and recently I've been eyeing SD/FM. But I'm wondering....how is it? Does anyone have any experience with SD/FM in late game? I was considering rolling this as a Brute...however...I almost feel as though it would actually do MORE aoe damage on a Tanker. Is this true? I feel this way because Tankers get Combustion AND FSC, whereas Brute's only get FSC. Tankers also have access to Epic AoE's such as Fireball just like a Brute does. So in comparison, a Brute would only have FSC+FB(and Shield Charge of course) whereas a Tanker would have FSC+Combustion+FB(and Shield Charge). I know Brutes get fury to pump out more damage, but wouldn't our "extra" AoE help us stay pretty close to them in this case? On top of being much more survivable?

How is the overall aoe damage of a SD/FM Tanker? Its just lookin really juicy to me lately lol, plus it's a TANKER so it's going to be much more survivable than a Brute or especially a Scrapper. Thoughts? Experience? Thanks all.

It'll be awesome.

I'm a big fan of Combustion, especially the 15' radius. It's the reason I went Tanker for my new villain.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Ah nice! So does combustion really help close the gap a little between aoe damage on a Tanker vs. a Brute with this combo?

This is the build I'm working on right now. Might need a few tweaks when I19 goes live though.

I can't really speak for the scrapper/brute version of this powerset combo, but I have a level 30 SD/FM tanker and the whole "scorched earth" effect is awesome. Combustion is a great power.

Also being nigh-indestructible is great. I have a feeling (in my bones) that scrapper/brute would do more AOE damage even without combustion, but I can't imagine the tanker is far behind.

So what was the final verdict on SD/FM!? Does Combustion for Tankers somewhat close the aoe damage gap between Tankers and Brutes? If so, it would mean I could go with a Tanker and be very close to Brute damage levels but with MUCH better survivability!!!

Anyone with insight or experience on this?

Do you regularly live around the bleeding edge of fury on your brute? If so, chances are you're going to find the tanker damage unsatisfying. No matter what the build is. But if you gauge your brute performance as so-so or average, chances are you'll be able to turn that combustion advantage into enough to be a step above a brute.

Doing a bit of number crunching, I think that you'd be fine with a tanker.

Assuming 95% damage slotting, 65% fury, and 6 targets in range of AAO, tanker damage with SC+FSC+combustion+FB compared to brute damage with SC+FSC+FB is nearly equal when buildup is in effect, and is about 88% of brute damage when buildup is not running.

Now, there are more considerations than just damage, of course. The tanker is spending ~10 more endurance and 3 seconds more of animation time to do that damage, but combustion comes at 4, where a brute has to wait until 26 for FSC (tanks get FSC at 28). Overall, though, I think you'd be fairly competitive with a tank.

This is what it means to be a tank!

My SD/FM just hit 50 this week.

It was a fun ride (get the Steadfast def IO early...) and absolutely EPIC damage once the build starts coming together. I've tanked Romulus no probs and every other threat so far. I'm really looking forward to seeing how he'll do against Reichsman and Recluse.

Started soloing the Maria Jenkins arc and EBs are no prob so far.

Do you have an idea on your build for i19?

SD/Fire is pretty good for a Tank, but it's still just a Tank. I haven't played mine after I got my Fire/SD Scrapper to 50 since it can do everything it can with more damage.

Pretty ballsy to come to the tanker forum and say "Still just a tank." lol

I've seen plenty of tanker vs. scrapper comparisons in-game. Scrappers are brittle, weak and flabby! >

Building a Shield tank is easy.

Slot your powers normally. Grab a Steadfast 3% def. Grab six slots of Gaussians for Build Up. Take Weave and combat jumping.

Done. You've hit the soft cap. Everything else is gravy.

Well maybe not flabby....

True, I've a 50 BS/SD scrapper who's anything but flabby. Not quite up with my Invuln, Stone or Shield tankers for durability but it's no slouch. I've main tanked the ITF with that scrapper.

I do have a 45 SD/Fire tanker I've been playing recently (well, last month... I've been working 18 hour days for the last 20 days and haven't logged in) and it's a beast. Durability wise it's a bit below my soft capped Invuln but still more than adequate and damage wise it leaves my other tankers in the dust. It doesn't quite equal my BS/SD scrapper but it comes rather close to my Spine/Regen scrapper in damage output. I've been very impressed with how well that tanker works.

It's not. Shield/fire is a TERRIFIC build IMO. I did a damage comparison between a scrapper version, and it was JUST behind in aoe dps. Granted the single target the scrapper beats it hands down, but with combustion added to the mix, its RIGHT there behind the scrapper version. Combustion is a fun power and great for aggro too anyways. It pisses me off the scrapper version doesn't get it Cause fire melee SOO needed a 5th single target attack...

If you don't want to take build up (or waste three slots), you can also use Sirocco's for AoE, Obliteration for Melee and Mako's for Ranged.

I actually think this just reinforces his point which was how easy it is to soft cap.

Yep, it can almost be done on pure SO's... I got to ~42% def to all positions without slotting a single IO on a test build. Of course that did require an... unusual build with slotting and power selection.

I think my SD/FM tanker (47 as of tonight) only had to find about 7% defense with IO bonuses to softcap... I did it with cheap IO's too. Multi Strike, Mako's Bite and the Steadfast unique with a single set of Touch of Death.

The more I play that tank the more impressed I am by both it's durability and damage output. It's by far the most damaging tanker I've ever played and it approaches my Inv/Stone tanker for durability.

I doubt you'll be disappointed in it; once it reaches the mid-20's it gets really good and keeps getting better as it matures. Yeah, the low levels are less than wonderful but it doesn't take long to get to the good stuff anyway.

I expect that it will be very good. I debated making it a brute but I would much rather have the combination of Combustion and FSC.
