So, based on the ending, we have a new explanation for the TARDIS's indeterminate readings of Amy's pregnancy.
It's not a Schrodenger's Baby after all, instead it's a EinsteinPodolskyRosen Paradox Baby!
Much simpler... -
I would assume that it should take more Empyrean Merits than Alignment Merits to get a Very Rare IO or PVP IO.
It's possible to get 2 Empyrean Merits per day (3 after Keyes Trial goes live?).
Using purely tip missions, takes 2 days to get an Alignment Merit.
Admittedly, can buy an Alignment Merits every 20 hours, but the 50 Reward Merit plus 20 million Influence costs seems like more than an Incarnate Trial worth of effort. -
Yeah, GAYman is the correct way.
There's a clip somewhere of him giving a speech to a GLBT scifi group, and he opens with a joke that one of the joys of speaking to such an audience was they get excited just by hearing his last name pronounced correctly. (there was much laughter from the crowd)
Plus when I was in the Neil Gaiman Trivia contest at Penguicon 2.0, he was reading all the questions, and that's how he said it. -
Looks like the Devs were more generous than that, in a way.
On Test, 1 Notice = 40 Threads. An Empyrean Merit is only 20 threads if used for that.
Admittedly, 1 Notice = Empy Merit would have allowed you to use 8 Notices for a Rare, but that's the trade off. 40 Threads for doing the WST seems fair to me. -
Awesome patch.
I love the Notice of the Well conversion to 40 Threads. This gives a pretty plausible way to do Incarnate advancement for those who hate the Trials but don't mind TFs. -
-
Actually, he said he deleted that thread as things were likely to change once work day tomorrow rolled around at Paragon Studios.

Thoughts and observations after a second viewing:
1) Richard Nixon
- some of his socially awkward moments are actually quite consistent with some real life things I've read about Nixon. He never was the most smoothly charismatic of people, for a politician, let alone a president, and he was aware of it.
- some have noted that this Nixon is shown a bit more sympathetically than most people would expect. My "fridge brilliance" insight on this is: one of the Doctor's strengths is he brings out the best in people. He makes ordinary people aspire to be extraordinary, and reminds exceptional people what they are capable of. He brings out the best in "Tricky Dick", using Nixon's skills at conspiracy and intrigue for a good cause. The most damning indictment of Nixon's character from all this: The Doctor's influence DIDN'T stick for the long term.
- loved that Nixon was taping all Oval Office activity as a counter-measure to the Silence.
- another observation: at one moment, a frantic and active Doctor tells Nixon: "Don't trust anyone, except me." A few words from The Doctor can have a massive impact. ("Doesn't she look tired?"). Look at that line again. Is The Doctor responsible, in part, for Nixon's paranoia later in his tenure?
2) Canton
Hope he shows up again in the series. Tough and competent 1960s FBI agent with a rebellious streak and ability to think outside the box? Sounds like good companion material under different circumstances. And like the commenter above noted, he's a pretty good analogue for the Brigader in many ways.
Love his "welcome to America" moment. These two episodes are wonderful examples of how culturally, Britain and the US are like two long-time friends who can poke fun at each other's quirks. In some ways, the story is a love letter to the homeland of the American fans.
3) upcoming plot points.
Much has already been said about how these two episodes are setting things up, and raise more questions than are answered.
I think it's pretty clear the girl was being kept by The Silence to be the pilot for their proto-TARDIS. Beyond that, Moffat has left us with many plausible options for her origin.
-Since the Silence have that Grey-crossed-with-Men-in-Black vibe, they could have used Amy as an incubator for a child using the Doctor's genetic material somehow.
-Could be the daughter of The Doctor and River Song, and Amy is just holding the girl in the picture as an "auntie".
- could be Jenny (or another person of Time Lord decent. Susan? The Rani?), captured by the Silence and forced to regenerate into a more childlike form?
- maybe Amy's daughter with no Time Lord DNA involved. Maybe just being conceived inside the TARDIS is enough?
4) The Silence.
Interesting villains.
They are trying to back-engineer TARDIS technology, so clearly they've been watching the Time Lords. Or maybe just The Doctor on his many visits to Earth.
Interesting thought: The Silence have a natural ability to make you ignore and forget them. Kinda like Perceptual Filters in Time Lord technology. What if Rassilon or other Time Lord Scientists back-engineered that feature of the TARDIS from The Silence? The two races may have a long history, but only The Silence would remember. (and maybe hold a grudge?)
As to the Doctor's solution to The Silence. Yes, it was a pretty violent solution in some ways. But, really, all he was doing was giving humanity a way to fight back in a war it wasn't aware of. And all The Silence have to do to avoid being killed is stop messing with humanity and avoid them. Little different than ordering Danny-Boy to destroy the Dalek ship or blowing up a Sontaran battle-fleet. Warning was given, The Silence were the aggressors, the Doctor did what he had to in order to protect the innocent, as he has in the past.
Done babbling... for now. -
Quote:Well, I think the Silence are pretty used to taunting and playing with humans, knowing that whatever they say will be forgotten. In the context of the longer conversation it was having with it's captor, that line probably didn't come across as a "subliminal nudge" until it was edited down to being the only words said.A race that has inherent latent mind-controlling abilities, when talking to one of its slaves, would never, *ever*, use a phrase like "Kill us on sight."; lest the slave he's talking too promptly do so.
Further, it's quite possible that the captive Silent was trying to get Canton to kill him. Being kept prisoner and being SEEN by a human for so long might have stressful to their psychology. And it might have preferred death to being kept alive, and interrogated to reveal all the secrets of the Silence. -

I've got FemFury up to 1,223. With only badge left that I can get being Partner for doing 50 extra Weekly Strike Targets.
15 / 50. Gonna be a while. -
Quote:We actually had several minutes left at the end of the second run. I was astounded. That run really came together. We didn't get it on the first run. Marauder was down to 4% when we ran out of time. The second run through was quite the success. I think we had over 1min to go when we defeated him.
You and me both. I've got the Master badge on my main hero, and that's enough for me for now. -
Quote:It was good run. It wasn't really important to me to get the MoLambda on my non-badger character, but I'm glad that bringing the Psi damage helped others get it.Got it last night... Thanks to Zartain for leading it, and beerpig and the rest of the league... who totally kicked asss and stuck with it...and of course can't forget the badge seni "Beefcake" for his help as well O_o
I was actually quite impressed that we got it done on the second run with a LOT of time left on the clock. Over 5 minutes if I recall. -
Quote:Samaritan is a major character in the Astro City comic book series. Basically, the Superman-equivalent of the universe. (different powerset, different origin, but clearly inspired by).Congrats! I do wonder tho if that's why they blocked Samaritan. There are just so many names used by multiple genres, comic companies, mythology, etc. that aren't blocked.
so, it's not a case of an obscure, alternate genre character. It's a straight-up superhero character for a world pretty similar to the COH world. Personally, as a comic book geek, I'd be surprised if that one WASN'T blocked.
Oh, and everyone, go read Kurt Busiek's Astro City. It's awesome. Just read the story from Astro City #1. It's a day in the life of Samaritan. Read it, and you'll never think of a superman-like character the same way again. Oh, then read "Nearness of You" from Astro City #1/2, and be ready to cry if you have the slightest romantic bone in your body. -
Quote:Thanks for being the voice of reason again, Arcana.I would expect that the devs cannot completely rewrite the entire system in one day. So don't expect that miracle. They might have been working on changes since release or even before, and some of those might have been expedited which they may be announcing. Beyond that, I would hope what people are expecting tomorrow is a starting point to discuss the future of the system, not a miracle cure for everything people think is wrong with the system.
The quoted paragraph above should be kept in mind by everyone for the purpose of managing expectations.
I fully expect the first step by the Devs to be a good one. But it's not going to be all things to all people. -
Excellent news.
Personally, I haven't felt any difficulties with the reward system. (Aside from making a few "I got a rock" jokes about many, many Uncommons, in good humor)
But, seeing friends and fellow players get upset over the sense that they've been treated unfairly by the system has been distressing. -
***sadness***
The very first Doctor Who episode I watched as a child was a Tom Baker episode with Sarah Jane as companion.
She's been the epitome of a Doctor's Companion in a lot of ways. And with her coming back in the new series, showed the amazing growth in the character from plucky-girl-sidekick to someone who really changed from her time in the TARDIS. Showing how a sidekick can grow into a hero in their own right, and inspire and lead others.
Beyond the character, to all reports, Elisabeth Sladen was a wonderful person, too.
She will be missed. -
I stayed up waaaaaay too late last night, into the wee hours of the morning my time, and got together with some Aussie players and other night owls, and did a MoLambda run.
We purposefully stocked up on Psi damage (including Seer Lore pets), and made sure we had a good mix of people with Reactive and Diamagnetic Interface in addition to our dedicated debuffers.
We did the run shooting for "Lambda Looter", but ready to re-run two more times for the other two badges. We were extra careful when Marauder landed near the Acid weapon shipment, even dismissing pets for a bit there.
We were under a minute left when we took Marauder down. On completion, the 3 badges all awarded.
Happy to have MoLambda out of the way on my badger character.
It was challenging, tense, and an epic duel down to the wire, even with a team fairly well-constructed for it.
But it is an effort. Would not see much point to do it 3 times. If it gets changed to how it's supposed to work in next patch, I won't bother on any other characters now that FemFury has the badge. Well, except for using my Rad debuffer, kinetic, or Mind Dom to help other people get the badges. -
Well, I'm gonna try sometime in next few days to do a "Lambda Looter" run on FemFury, and see if the glitch in player's favor shows up to award all 3 badges. Then I can at least have the badges on my main character without having to do basically the same Master run scenario 3 times on same character. Other players got lucky, maybe I will too. Just got to get it done before they patch things.
I'll probably also try some Lambda Looter runs with Dr. Continuum, to bring some Rad debuffs and try to help others get the badges. I'll grind with him to help Electroanagesia get the badge, for one thing. Must support the other badge-hungry person in my SG, after all. -
Quote:Well, I'm not going to attribute this to either malice or intentional deception.Such convenient timing... it was very nice of them to point out that it's almost the weekend so we shouldn't expect answers to our perfectly logical questions anytime soon.
I always enjoy how they refuse to admit they're wrong whenever the player base calls them out on a mistake... *poof* the rules change and we're all the wrong ones.
Anyway, this particular trick on their part may be the beginning of the end of my 7 years as a paying customer. I just don't have the energy to be so frustrated over stuff like this anymore. It does no good since debating valid points with support is similar to arguing with a brick wall.
I will say that I think it was a particularly annoying screw-up. Bad communication on the badge requirements. Plus a bug that awarded extra badges to some and not to others. Plus, what I think are bad badge / reward design choices on the Lambda, especially compared to the BAF. A triple threat of customer frustration on this particular event. -
the Q&A said:
Quote:So, the thing for us to do now is to make a few Lambda Looter runs before the patch goes in, and hope that we get a bugged run that gives all 3 badges, like the lucky people who got it before us?Theres additional confusion due to a bug where one of the badges is improperly awarding the other two. Both of these issues will be rectified soon -
Quote:Based on this, I'm wondering if our League managed to accidentally acquire another Acid or Grenade by killing a weapon shipment. The Dev's have coughed up a furba... er have spoken.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...12#post3592312
And well, since Marauder basically jumps right on top of the acid weapon shipment, how the heck were were supposed to avoid that with area of effect damage while fighting all the crazy reinforcements? Especially since WE DIDN'T KNOW IN ADVANCE! And had no reason to think this was the case as OTHER Leagues had gotten all 3 badges at once? -
Quote:Actually, that's not really that surprising. BAF is the farming Trial of choice already, even if the badges/merits function differently than described, that's not going to change. The slog to beat down a no-temp power Marauder, even with 3 level shifts makes it much less time efficient than BAF. I'm sure there are teams capable of doing it pretty quickly, but for the wider player base, BAF is far more grind-friendly.
Yeah, but if you COULD take out Marauder without the temp powers, it seems like 6 Astral Merits (if all 3 badges awarded at once) would be fairer reward than 4, when compared to the difficulty of getting similar number of Merits in BAF.
