Resources. The Earth has lots of resources that can be useful to almost anything made of matter. Sure, it's at the bottom of a somewhat deep gravity well, especially compared to the Asteroid Belt, various gas giant rings and stony moons, or Oort bodies, but if you're already down there in the gravity well with the resources you're pretty much set. That and mechanical technology of terrestrial origin is designed to operate in environment of corrosive gases and liquids to the point that it frequently doesn't work well without them.

Quote:*meh* i prefer the Wave Motion Gun approach. Fire a beam nearly as wide as a moon that can detonate said moon. Your target only has to move several hundred miles in a couple seconds to dodge it, but as long as they're limited to speeds under 60 miles an hour that's not a major concern.Hmm...
Calculate for flight trajectory, compensate for evasive maneuvers, vacuum drift and graviational variable flux...most likely variables of standard zig-zag evasion combined with optimal direct route planning...factoring in variables, adding directed support fire from station guns to channel movement...
Yeah. That ups your chances to about 95%. 95% chance of getting shot, that is.
Not sure you'd want to know your previous estimates -

Quote:CoH was my first MMO and when I played a few others I was like OMG, you can do good damage and self buff? Why do our devs make our characters suck? Outside of technical limitations it defies all logic for self buffing to not happen. Just think of all the characters in various comics that can help their allies with their abilites as well as themselves. By not allowing self buffing it goes against what this game is based on which is comics. Its crazy to be able to give your team awsome defense but yet you are the weakest link on the team if your a bubbler. You toggle up personal force field and your team suffers for it while you still cant attack. It makes no sense what so ever. I hope in CoH 2 they address this in some way.Quote:The reason that its not that big of a deal in other games is the relative SIZE of buffs in other games, as well as the overall difficulty of individual enemy critters. I dont have numbers lying around for the last game I played, but the differences are in orders of magnitude like 10:1 what this game's buffs contribute by comparison.

Quote:Sadly enough Kheldians apparently don't even get access to the PPPs.Did you run the Patron arc on your Bane? As I said above, Soldiers (including Banes) only get access to Patron Pools. There are no Ancillary Pools for them.
Devs hate heroes! (Old meme, i know.) -
Quote:i disagree with the first statement unless i misunderstand what you're saying. My Force Field and Traps users certainly do.Support with protection is just stupid. As is melee with guaranteed unbreakable protection.
Melee player characters with guaranteed unbreakable protection would be rather stupid in my opinion as well. Since they don't exist in this game it is sort of irrelevant to any discussion about the game.
Which sort of reminds me of the time my SR Scrapper was in the early twenties and bumped into a large group of Yellow Ink Men near the natural store in Talos. Was held in about two seconds through Practiced Brawler. Came as a bit of a surprise. Every one of my melee types has been subjected to mezzes at some point in the mid to late game, even if it only lasted a short time, and i'm not referring to encounters with Ghost Widow, just enemy groups with lots of stuns or holds who all fire them at my character at once. i'm sure you know how that is... -

The only issue i have with the "Ultra Mode did it" theory is that Primal Earth's moon has been in a polar orbit long before Ultra Mode.
-
Quote:i don't know of any game lore that mentions or explains it, but i've been commenting on the moon's polar orbit in game for years.Lacking any sign of in-game references to the situation, I figured the "for fun" dorum would be a good place to ask this.
What in blazes happened to Primal and Praetorian Earth's moon? One, it appears roughly three times larger than our earth's moon, (putting it some 70,000 miles out, if my math is right) but that can be attributed to dramatic license. The art team didn't go nearly as overboard there as leaked screen shots from DCUO demonstrate. Gotham's moon is clearly in geosynchronous orbit.
My real question relates to the thing's orbit. It rises in the extreme south-southeast and sets in the far north-northwest. Polar orbit at best, and probably a retrograde orbit with a steep angle. I know, this is a comic book universe, so things don't have to make sense, but obvious bits like this usually have some in-continuity explanation?
Given that this is a phenomenon in both universes, one might suggest that it pre-dates the blatant historical break point: Marcus Cole finding the Well of Furies. Before that, things are relatively quiet on the paranormal level. Just the Circle of Thorns waking up and acting out low-impact Call of Cthulu plotlines.
The previous cataclysmic events date all the way back to the Oranbegan wars, and the death of all the pre-ancient gods. i wonder if we need to borrow the box of Tielekku's remains from the Midnighter's Club and ask HER who broke our orbital mechanics?
Or did the Dev team just set things up this way to guarantee the maximum unlikelihood of a solar eclipse? -
Quote:Sometimes i almost miss the first several years where mezzes would shut off all toggles when they affected you.But there is something you can do about it. It is called eat the breakfrees you have sitting in your tray instead of letting them sit there waiting for you to die to use with that wake. Stop saying there is nothing you can do about mezzes.
Almost.
Edit: Oh, and then there was the time even earlier in the game when the mez protection inspirations could not be used while mezzed. You had to preemptively use them or wait for time or defeat to end the mez. i don't miss that at all. -
Quote:If i'm going to do a lot of teaming i usually go with Controller, Corruptor, Defender, or VEAT. Other ATs are fun to have on a team, but as long as you have halfway competent players using any of those ATs no other AT is needed.I was actually thinking about using a Tanker. I wanted to do a lot of teaming, and I figured that this way I'd never have to worry about not having a tank on the team.
That's not to say that i don't welcome all the other ATs on a team, and i play all the others myself, but in a team setting i consider the four ATs i listed to be among the most useful. -
Will this do?
Quote:Longbow using flamethrowers is written as "OMG NO!" but that Fire/Fire Blaster with the same basic abilities as a flamethrower is seen as a hero.
That's it...time to fix cannon with CoH2! -
Quote:There are other games out there you know. What are you going to do with all your spare time when this game is no longer being supported by its company?
Both MMO and P&P.
Arcanaville has played them before and it's not unlikely she'd find another game to run the numbers on.
Obviously she was doing something before CoH launched. The odds are good she will do something after it shuts down.
Or she might get involved in creating an MMO.
Perhaps not the most likely outcome, but she has expressed interest before.
Still, i suspect that your question was mostly rhetorical, especially considering your abbreviation of her post. Have fun with that. -
Quote:Not that i've noticed. My KM/DA Scrapper has had no issues hitting and killing stuff. When i've played my other Scrappers i haven't noticed any accuracy issues.Did they do something to the scrappers, on the last patch? Two months ago my scrapper was pretty good at leveling, and now my scrapper can't hit a single target.
If you really aren't hitting as often as you should it might be good to run Herostats to see what your actual accuracy is like.
i do have a mostly SO slotted Claws/Regen in the late thirties that i haven't played much for a while. Maybe i'll log in and see how things go later. As i recall i was mostly focusing on the RWZ arcs. -
Quote:The only dedication that i expect to have any significant bearing would be that of NCsoft's accounting and engineering departments. Players posting on the forums are not relevant to a decision like that.
You all were right, thanks to you. I get a new bunch of servers with low latency in the US thanks to your dedication. Again, you were right !
Nice try though. (i think, since i'm not quite sure what you're trying to do here except maybe inflate a nonexistent irrational sense of importance?) -
Actually i was referring to the overall tone of your post. i don't find the server relocation bizarre at all for reasons that were already mentioned before and in the announcement. However, you're full of it if you think that the calls for server list merges in the forums, or this thread in particular, were the impetus for this action. Especially since it's explicitly not a server list consolidation at all. Not to mention that unless NCsoft moves much faster than most companies the decision would have been made many months ago.
Still, it should make merging the server lists somewhat easier from a technical standpoint if NCsoft is inclined to do so, although physical location was hardly the biggest issue. i also don't know what the legal ramifications of the move from Germany to the US would be for a server list merge, since that was raised as a potential obstacle while the servers were located in Germany in previous threads.
Incidentally, would it have been that difficult to properly link to the quoted announcement instead of my post? With your technical acumen and all i should think it would have been a trivial thing.
Edit: See? It's easy peasy...
Quote:Greetings all,
We have an important announcement for our EU players.
On 11th November 2010 we will be moving our four European servers to a new data centre in the United States. As part of this migration, we will be taking the servers down starting at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time (1:00 p.m. British Time / 14:00 Central European Time). This migration is expected to take approximately 6 hours, but it could end sooner or later. Check back for updates on the downtime.
This migration will help to centralize the City of Heroes servers allowing for higher quality and more efficient systems management. One location for all of the City of Heroes game servers will make it easier to support and upgrade the hardware. For example, as part of the migration, all of the EU game servers will be upgraded to brand new hardware. Also, it will improve our ability to respond to performance issues and streamline processes for keeping all servers up to date and online.
With the new data centre being located in the United States, it is possible that some of our European customers could experience additional lag when connecting to the game servers. However, the hardware is much newer, more efficient and our testing in most cases has shown no impact on performance. Additionally, customers in Europe will now consistently connect to the game servers through a more robust Internet pipeline. This means that our European players may actually notice improvements to their overall game experience.
This move does not impact your account, characters or game client. You existing account and user information will all be preserved. There is no work necessary on your part to prepare for this migration.
Please note that City of Heroes European game servers can only be accessed by European accounts, and City of Heroes North American game servers can only be accessed by North American accounts. There will be no server list merge or server merge as part of this migration.
Thank you very much for your patience with this matter; we appreciate your continued support of City of Heroes!

Quote:The problem with using it while resting is that by the time it takes effect you're already nearly back up to full health and endurance.I've used it while resting or going afk, to hide from any possible enemies.
Still, it can be useful if you're in a hostile area and going AFK for less than five minutes. -
Quote:i half suspect this post is yet another (bizarre) attempt at sarcasm based on not understanding or ignoring most of the posts earlier in the thread. Especially the posts regarding how latency and networking functions, and the personal accounts given by people who have played on both US and EU servers while residing in various non-US parts of the world.I want to correct my comments from the past. I apologize that I ever questioned Unification. Thanks to your determination, I now in the US have new servers to play on in the US with low, low, latency and newer hardware. I look forward to playing with you guys shortly. I will reactivate as a European. Personally, I think you guys had it good with your own servers but you want them over here so NCSOFT gets to lower their costs while giving what you desire :-) I hope the servers live up to your expectations ;-) Soon you'll get to play with more Americans ;-)
I'd like to create an account as soon as possible. Is Union or Defiant the place to be?
By the way, you never did address the question of where people located outside the EU and US were supposed to play. i mean besides the initial barely concealed xenophobia about how foreigners should basically play anywhere but the US servers so that they don't infect them with their slowness. (Which made no sense anyway since latency for other players has no effect on your latency.) -
Quote:Don't worry, you'll eventually encounter some of the posts by people like Championess who do in fact insist that the current Dev team is doing nearly everything wrong.LOL, nobody is claiming the 'devs can do no right', the fact everyone posting here is playing their game shows that we all enjoy what they produce.
Quote:The complaints are coming due to the fact they are consistently late in releasing new content. -
i thought it was a rather fine bit of hyperbole myself. If you don't realize it's not completely serious at that level of absurdity then adding more really isn't going to help. i mean it's like if you ordered fish and chips and instead the waitress delivered a live basking shark and a truckload of whole potatoes to your table. At that point you have to go get the jugs of cooking oil, set up the deep fryers, bribe the local fire department, depose the prime minister, start fermenting the vinegar, hire a staff of Lithuanian fry cooks... it just becomes a much bigger production than you wanted simply to get an order of fish and chips.
Like mowing the lawn with a flamethrower. Except that's actually a labour reducer if you don't mind how it looks. -
If you don't find the game fun then it might not be the game for you. Although i would give it more than a few hours of play to make that judgment. Liking specific elements of a game is no guarantee you'll like the game as a whole.
i've tried a few other MMOs and none of them convinced me to sign up for a subscription. One of them was even the most popular MMO in the English-speaking world and it still didn't win me over. Tolkien-based fantasy settings with cartoony elves and orcs just aren't to my taste no matter how much i may like other aspects and mechanics of the game. The other MMOs also had elements or themes that i liked, but not enough to sign up. Not every game is for every player, no matter how much you like some parts of it. Still, i think Memphis Bill raises some good questions that would need to be answered before anyone can really help the OP. -
Quote:I added the Complete Collection even though i already had prepurchased Going Rogue to get the extras and the additional game time. Do not buy it for the Shady Uselessness power, but for the one month's game time for $9.99 and other extra costume bits if you buy it. So far the power has no use at all other than looking sort of cool for five minutes as long as you don't move or activate any other powers. Still, for what it's worth, you can stand there and do emotes while all inky until you get bored or five minutes goes by.So, I see that the Complete Going Rouge* is on sale for ten bucks after Turkey Day.
Among its features, I noted (*in addition to some make-up) the Shadowy Presence invisibility power. I pre-ordered GR back in the spring. How do I now get my mitts on this power without shelling out ten bucks for the Best Buy deal?
Though I will if it means I can apply the code for the sake of the power *and* a free month of play. Info anybody? -
Quote:Not really. The Devs didn't call back later, they said at the start that they'd like the 16th, but weren't sure they could do it. Well, technically they did call to confirm it would be the later time, but still....Kinda like your buddy telling you he'll meet you at six but then he calls you to show that he'll be an hour late because he's stuck in a traffic jam.
Then you proceed to tell him how bad a friend he is because he always breaks his promises.
It sucks a lot that we won't see I19 for another week but let's be real here, it's not like the devs include show-stopper bugs in their game on purpose.
It's more like your buddy calling to say that he's going to try to catch the 4:14 train to meet you at 6, but if he can't get there in time he'll have to catch the next train in about two hours.
Then he calls at 4:35 to tell you that he got hung up at the ticket window and he won't make until about 8 or so and you start screaming at him that he sucks and he's the worst friend ever and anyway he swore on his mother's grave he'd be there at 6 sharpish and his word is worthless and he sucks anyway and even though it's really tasty his cheesecake is doomed to fail because he doesn't sell as much of it from his little shop as the major brand name sold in the supermarket down the road and as you're degenerating into gibbering incoherency your phone cuts out because the spittle from screaming at the phone soaked into the case and shorted something out.
Yeah, it's a little more like the latter. -
Quote:Releasing on the 16th was quite explicitly stated as a goal that they hoped to reach, but knew might not happen, and if it couldn't be released on the 16th it would be released after the US Thanksgiving holiday. There was never a promise made at the actual M&G in the world outside some posters' heads, but they've insisted there was a promise because they see it as support for their position that the Devs can do no right.I'm just wondering why they promised something before Thanksgiving anyway. The past three years they've decided not to risk a new issue right before the long holiday... why did they decide this would be different in the first place?
