Quote:Yes Mind/Fire is excellent. Mine is one of my favorite characters. But I think it's good to note that doing TFs solo is a bit of a stunt. It's totally cool that it can be done at all, but it's very time consuming to solo an AV. It wouldn't be accurate to say that Mind Doms are overall the most uber solo characters, despite their impressive abilities.*blinks surprised*
I didn't realize mind dome were so good at solo. So they are one of the better soloers? What do they have trouble with that other archetypes can do?
And what secondary sets work well with mind? Fire is decent?
For example, my SS/Shield Brute is a much faster soloer overall than my Mind/Fire. Can't solo an AV, but outside of that is able to rack up defeats faster. -
Camera angle is baked into the UI and the logic hasn't changed for years. Try this: hit "B" to zoom into first person view, then "B" again to zoom out again. This will reset any camera angle oddness.

Freakshow because they're just nuts and loving every minute of it.
Arachnos for the diverse groups and models (Mu, tarantulas, Fortunatas, Windows, etc).
Rikti, again for diversity, the under-the-Mothership map sets, and how they scale up so they're a real threat in the LGTF and Mothership event. I also love the costume redesign they got a few issues back. -
Quote:Personally I find perma-dom more useful. I love not having to worry about being mezzed and high levels of recharge work to recharge all your long cooldown powers, not just Domination, so you have more tactical options and AoEs are ready for every spawn. Recharge is the gift that keeps on giving. Also, would I be better off working for the S/L softcap, or going perma-dom?

Quote:I assume that your dom is actually Mind/Psi since there is no Psionic primary, and the powers in question are probably Confuse and Mass Confusion.Psionic/Psionic Assault
My Dom has something called total/mind/mass hysteria domination but when I read about it closer it says that I get no XP when I use this. Why is this?
If you re-read the power descriptions more carefully it says you won't get experience for an enemy defeated entirely by a confused foe. If you contribute some damage, you get XP. In fact, you get disproportionate XP, since the formula for confused mob XP sharing excludes 3/4 of their damage, IIRC.
A common misconception is that confuse powers hurt team XP, but Enantiodromos proved that is not the case in this post. -
One quick caveat: the very first time you do a Morality Mission, you get a reward of the old fashioned Reward Merits, you don't get an Alignment Merit. Every future Morality Mission does rewards A-merits.

Yeah, I have to say that my Dom is by far my most survivable squishy. I've been on many teams with timid tank in which I'm the one that does the alpha strike. That said, I like seeing creative character builds so I'd like to see a sample build of a Mind/Fire with high defenses.

Quote:Blame Microsoft's security policies. Applications are supposed to install themselves into the Program Files directory, but to write or update any subfolders of Program Files the software needs admin rights. The message is incorrect because neither City of Heroes nor its updater in any way needs administrative access to the system to function correctly. CoH can be easily installed into a directory that has change permissions for an unprivileged user, and it stores all its settings under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Even without the crash, I'd consider it a security bug that the launcher is pestering users to give it more access to the system than it actually requires. Don't perpetuate the run-everything-as-admin fallacy that so many Windows programs fall victim to.
What you said is true, that this could be sidestepped if the app didn't install into Program Files. But it does, so there's no way around the security issues on UAC-enabled systems. -
I'd be interesting in seeing a build. I have a perma-Hasten Mind/Fire but his defense numbers are nothing to write home about.

Welcome back! I still have fond memories of teaming with you and seeing how a Kin should be played.

Quote:I do wish people would keep this in mind. The Alpha Rare has the big payoff. The incremental benefit of the Very Rare is quite small.its not clear that Very Rare needs a quick achievable path for all slots. In the case of Alpha, its Rare that is arguably the "core" peak achievement, and Very Rare is a long term pursuit item.
Just as purple IOs aren't required to build a high performing character, the Very Rare isn't either. -
Overall I agree with Seldom's writeup, so I'll focus on something else.
For me pets were a big factor. I have a Fire controller and occasionally the imps will aggro a spawn when you didn't want to. For Mind, your "pets" are really the NPC enemies you're facing, but one benefit is no matter who they attack, it doesn't lead to aggro on your team. Obviously that's only one factor among many, but for me it was significant. -
Quote:I remember how difficult the ITF seemed at first and how people were moaning and complaining that it wasn't doable without highly tuned teams. After a while, people learned and adjusted and now it's considered pretty straightforward.Ah yes, using a very small group of players who always play together on the same toons every day around the same time is an excellent base for success of new content. It may take them all of closed i20 alpha/beta, but of course they'll succeed at least one time.

The 10 second period of time may work in the long run as people get used to following orders and playing with one another (since I believe only a small handful of players will continue to do this Trial after getting the badge I assume will be awarded). However, in the first few weeks on a Live server, it's just going to be fail after fail after fail which will, naturally, cause many of the players to simply give up on the trial altogether (see the Barracuda Strike Force or the Apex Task Force for some).
So the 10 second timer might be too difficult, but I'm going to withhold judgment until it's been live for a few weeks. -
No, the proc only fires on whatever attack (or toggle) you have it slotted in. A minion confused by it does not inherit the ability for the proc to fire.

Thank you, THANK YOU, Second Measure. This Producer's Letter is one of the best updates I've read in months. As much as I appreciate the recent communication from Posi and War Witch, it gets old after a while hearing "cool new stuff is coming in i20" but never hearing any specifics.
I'm excited about the Incarnate Trials and look forward to learning more in the coming weeks/months. -
Quote:It's interesting how some of the inherent powers change gameplay. On a brute, Fury is a damage bonus that builds over time, so you want to lead with several low damage fast recharge attacks, then unload your big attacks once you have Fury built up.I find that Scourge affect my playstyle in that my priority will be to get my target into "Scourge range" where even a weak attack will now finish a mob.
On a corruptor you do exactly the opposite. You want to get your foe into Scourge range (< 50% health) quickly, then use rain powers or fast lower damage attacks. -
I'm unclear if you chose Devices because you think toe bombing is a fast method of soloing or if you like Devices and the tactics flowed from that. Because toe bombing certainly works but it's slow.
If your primary goal is fast soloing, I'd steer clear of Devices. Go with Energy or Elec. Those both have very hard hitting melee attacks. For stealth, get Super Speed plus a Celerity Stealth IO. I have a Fire/EM that uses that combo when soloing to do things like stun Rikti Mentalists before they can mez me.
Between Archery and Fire, I prefer Fire. Archery's Rain of Arrows is a fantastic mini-nuke but I tire of the long animation. One of the draws of Fire for me is how fast the attacks are. Fire damage is also less resisted than Lethal but that concern might be overblown.
I thoroughly enjoyed my Archery blaster (especially once I got RoA!) but now that I have an Arch/MM at 50 and a Fire/EM at 50, I play the Fire much more often. But it's mainly due to play style, not that I feel the Arch character is gimped in any way. -
-
I like Mind/Fire. Fire isn't usually a resisted damage type and it hits hard. Luckily I'm not a RP'er so I don't have to come up with a character concept for my Mind/Fire/Cold Dom -- I just know he hits like a truck.

I just wanted to give the Mids' team my thanks and some money: I just did my duty via PayPal.
Mids' is indispensable.

You'll find that some Hami's are worth a TON because people don't do Hami raids as much as they did a few years ago. If you have a bunch of them, you're looking at hundreds of millions of inf.

I can't say which powerset is most uber, but I love my Mind/Fire. I prefer to play ranged, so my go-to fire attacks are Fire Blast, Blaze, and Fire Breath. I built the character with a huge amount of recharge bonuses for perma-Domination so I can pretty much machine gun Fire Blast and Blaze.
With high recharge and high End cost epic powers (Ice Storm and Sleet), the End refill from Domination sometimes doesn't come up fast enough, but Fire's Consume fills that gap.
I really love the character due to having so much control available yet also having hard hitting attacks too. I start fights in control mode, locking down large spawns. Once the team is fully engaged I switch to direct damage mode, while still making sure that potentially dangerous bosses are held or confused. It's a great feeling doing the alpha strike on a huge spawn that's normally very dangerous to squishies like Malta or Devouring Earth and being able to neuter them.It especially gives me a chuckle if we have a timid Tank and I just dive right in.
Since you're new to Doms I should mention that perma-Domination is nice but hardly a mandatory goal. I like it because with Domination up I can hold a boss in 1 shot, I don't have to worry about getting mezzed, and firing Domination fills my blue bar.
I don't normally go for uber expensive builds, but with this Dom I was like a car guy who obsessively spends money on his hot rod. I started with a reasonable build, then went for inexpensive purple sets for recharge bonuses, then started adding Luck of the Gamblers, then threw in a couple of expensive purple sets. Totaling it all up now, it's pretty crazy but I've enjoyed it every step of the way. -
Quote:Creating a macro for this is a huge timesaver. Type this command in the chat box:My advice to find teams is to build one. Use the /search tool, find people who are not currently on a team (and not flagged as not looking) and send a polite tell to the people around the range you're looking to run asking if they're interested in a (mission/GM kill/badge/AE/whatever you want to run) team.
/macro Inv, "tell $target, Want to join a level XX mission team?"
That will create a silver button with the label "Inv" (i.e. Invite) in the first open power tray slot you have.
Next do a /search. When you see someone you'd like to invite, click their name in the Search window, then click your Inv button and you'll shoot them a tell inviting them to team with you. This is nice because either through apathy or inattention many people you send invites to won't respond or at least not respond quickly. This technique lets you rapidly fire off invites with no typing.
A good shortcut to remember for replying when someone sends you a tell is that you can hit the Backspace key and the chat window will set up a reply to the last person who sent you a tell. -
Quote:I think it's been well established that the current uber farmer is SS/FA. That said, an SS/SD can farm very effectively without purple IO sets. You want to softcap defense and then build for massive recharge for FS, SC, and your epic AoE.My SS/SD is at 38, and I do enjoy him, but he's an absolute end hog and I don't want to waste any money on trying to fix his endurance problem when I'd rather spend it on recharge/defense. I know he could farm Council Empire quite nicely, but aside from that, is he really that great? Would I be better off deleting him, starting a new SS/FA and PLing him up (Oh the Statesman farm... How I love thee...) and throwing money at him?
As you mentioned, endurance is a big issue with SS/SD, even more so as you pile on the +recharge. You can mitigate it a bit by getting the +End accolades, and by using the Performance Shifter and Numina +End procs. Ultimately though the thing that finally fixed it for me was getting the Cardiac Alpha boost. That was a godsend.
I recommend finding an old SS/SD build guide by ThugsRus. He has several builds in there for different budgets and a revised build late in the thread. It's thought provoking.
