Quote:Thanks I just caught that at the tail end of this post. They did say they intended to proliferate pretty much everything eventually.

Quote:Cool. I appreciate it. I'll reach out next time I get a chance to get back in game.I must have missed your PM in my message spam, drop me an in-game mail at @Midnight Tempest and I'll try to find some good examples for you.
Edit: If I find a CoT map, one really bad example too.
Did some testing on my end too. SS or Hover+Jetpack/Steam Jet makes a big difference in applying the debuff quickly to the whole mob. -
Overall very cool. I hope we get /PD, /Traps and /Dark Miasma at some point.

Quote:Good.I'm on Freedom, and I assure you it's possible to position the mob without a Mez. How do you think Storm Defenders have been doing it? <snipped for brevity>
I would like to learn this by watching you if that's not a problem. I have toons on Freedom too. I sent you a PM to make arrangements. I'm looking forward to learning something new.
As far as Storm/ Defenders I have not seen any break an alpha by "Herd"icaning unless the group was already somewhat clustered or aggro was already managed by another player via taunt or mez. -
Quote:You can do this consistently on any mob regardless of scenario without a mezz and not die?It takes a lot of practice to go from scattering an entire room to continually moving things tighter into the deathball, so don't obsess about it early on.
I want to see this. I'm always up to learning something new. What server are you on? -
Forgive me! You were very specific in how you planned on placing the mobs but you never discussed how you would mez them. I figured you would miss my edit note. Haha!
Quote:I figure that either mass hypnosis or terrify would cause the initial mez to the mobs, then use herding tactics to get them locked into a corner with hurricane and then take them out with a combination of freezing rain, tornado and lightning storm.
Unless its a chaotic playstyle you are going for, I think that you will drive yourself crazy without -KB from an Immobilize. Tornado will scatter anything you cluster every time you use it. -KB would make Hurricane a little more forgiving to use too.
Quote:Just re-reading the paragraph is making me realise how SLOW soloing a mission would be using this tactic but as I mentioned above the playstyle is just an experiment on my part during solo missions. I wouldnt attempt it in a team.
Overall I think a well played *any*/Storm can achieve the effect you describe. Its not necessarily exclusive or any better in a pairing with Mind/.
I do wonder if TK + Hurricane can somehow stack on big game like AVs? -
Are you sure they can stack? I was under the impression that activating one stealth power detoggles the other.

Quote:*any*/Storm can do what you describe IMO. As the other poster mentioned it will be difficult to keep them clustered and use tornado without a -KB power like an immobilization.Mind control is one of my favourite powersets and for a while now I've been thinking of pairing it with storm. I know there is not a lot of synergy between the two powersets because Freezing Rain does not get on well with Mass Hypnosis and Terrify but, tbh, thats one of the reasons why I'm attracted to it.
My theory is that a mind storm MAY make a very good controller for positional control (in otherwords use the map to your advantage). That is to use telekinesis, hurricane and gales to round up mobs and pin them down in a corner or against a wall THEN use freezing rain, tornado and thunder storm to take them out (with a little help from the ST attacks in Mind control).
I understand that grav/storms can use what I call positional control to great effect. Was just wondering if mind/storms could do the same.
Anyway all that is just theory and I've never actually tried it. Has anyone here tried this method of play? If so is it VERY difficult to pull off? I suspect I will need a lot of practice but I would only use this tactic for solo play and play more conventionally in teams.
TK is a shadow of what it used to be. With it's long recharge and high endurance cost I don't see it being a significant contributor to the positioning you describe.
The thing that stands out the most concerning your proposed play style is do you intend to position the mobs without mezzing them? If so i hope you plan on building for DEF. Without mezzing and defense you will get creamed if you attempt this. (you didn't specify in your description so I didn't want to make the assumption that you would mez prior to herding) -
Slick build Tex! Do you think you can pull it off with Leviathan?
-
Sure thing!
Given two smilar builds, both with Aid Self: if the primary difference is one is soft capped Ranged DEF and ~50% S/L RES; the other with soft capped S/L DEF, I believe the first build would have a longer "immortality line" (a higher degree of survivability).
I think that was the point you were making. If so, I agree with you if and only if they both can take Aid Self. If only the later can take Aid Self I believe the numbers would be very very close. So close that I believe it would come down to a factor of recovery rates and endurance available.
I don't have the numbers in front of me, so the above is a "guestimate". -
Quote:If we make an assumption that they both take Aid Self and slot it in a similar fashion I would agree with your statement.Just be careful to keep in mind that S/L defense often means S/L defense without S/L resistance, vs Ranged defense with S/L resistance (typically in the 50% range). It's not quite as clear cut as Ranged vs S/L Defense.
(Some few builds can manage S/L resist with S/L defense. I don't know how possible it is on Controllers because to do it and keep recharge up normally takes 6 slots from the Obliteration set. I managed to do it on a Radiation/Fire Blaster with 4 Oblit sets but it cost so much I never actually implemented it.) -
Quote:Mace Mastery offers a S/L/E shield. It requires a side switch (and back if you want to stay on blue side) and the completion of the villain patron arc in order to unlock it.If Rock Armor or Frozen Armor fits your theme, then go for sm/leth defense.
OP your best bet is to go S/L DEF if softcapping is your goal. As you can see there are some sacrifices made to softcap for RANGED DEF. The tradeoffs for going S/L would be a little more forgiving considering that the epic pools offering S/L DEF can grant you a considerable amount of DEF to work with. -
@39mins and 00secs of this video Positron discusses the new "Titan" Weapons melee set. It will not be released with i21.
This thread and this thread also contain information and pictures of the new melee set. -
Quote:If you post a skeleton build with just power selections (or even your actual build) I'm sure someone will be able to work out a Ranged DEF build with some recharge. However without the Fighting pool it will be difficult if not impossible.Yeah, I'm not planning to pick Ice or Stone mastery or whatever. Leviathan all the way. I was thinking more of ranged/AOE def anyway, not S/L.
I guess I'll just go for recharge. I currently do pretty well overall with more or less no def and no global recharge as it is.
Lewis
I highly doubt the playability of a Ranged and AoE DEF build, if its even possible without the Fighting pool. -
Quote:Both. You don't need the Fighting Pool to get there if you pick Stone, Ice or Mace. I imagine Leviathan will make it harder to get there. All,
I have an old shelved (due to altitis) Plant/Storm that I'd like to revisit. I haven't really played him in quite some time. I normally gravitate towards Recharge-heavy builds on my controllers, especially my stormies, but I'm wondering if I should try to go for a defense based build instead?
Or, if I do a bit of both, which should I favor?
I want just about all the powers as well as 4 epics from Leviathan, so I dont have room for boxing/tough/weave, no matter what I do.
Thanks,

Smells like troll 'round these here parts. -
I know some of these have been mentioned. I was surprised how much synergy some of these thematic pairing of sets have:
Ill/TA Controller
Fire/Cold Controller
Plant/Storm Controller
Dark/Fiery Brute
Fire/Dark Corruptor
Kin/SD Scrapper
Earth/Fire Dom
Mind/Psi Dom -
Quote:I found both capable of producing very good AoE. In fact I think /Thorny has more AoE. Even so /Fire's damage output is tough to beat. From a functional perspective, Earth/Fire is better I think. The pairing of maximum AoE control with maximum AoE damage. And the -def of /Thorns is rather wasted given how much -def Earth/ already puts out.
The main difference is that /Thorny's AoEs are primarily delivered at a closer ranges and the animations are a bit longer. /Fire can be successfully played at purely long ranges if desired.
In my mind it comes down to a question of playstyle and a tolerance for redraw. The playstyle contrast would be Mid range to Melee (Earth/Thorny) vs. Long range with the option of playing melee (Earth/Fire). The safety Earth/ provides can feasibly support both playstyles.
Best of luck with your decision!
<EDIT>
I forgot to mention that I ended up rerolling my Earth/Thorny (as a Ice/Thorny and an Earth/Fire) not because it sucked but because I also thought the -DEF was overkill as OB points out. I also found my playstyle conflicted. For me Earth/ seems to favor a longer ranged playstyle while /Thorny favors a closer range playstyle. YMMV -

Quote:Same dilemma. I am overly optimistic that /Regen will get a decent buff in the future. Doesn't look like i21 is it though. I wouldn't delete the old toon either way.So, I have decided to reroll my main, and have a question.
See, back when the game released, I decided to emulate my favorite comic book character and made a claws/reg scrapper. Well, after regen went through all of its adjustments, I found I no longer liked the set. Even now, I find it almost intolerable to play. So i decided to reroll him as a claws/wp. -
