Electric or Illusion/Cold?

Hi there!

I'm on a controller kick right now, and I'd really like your suggestion on this.

Ill/Cold or Elec/Cold?

These two sets, after years of playing this game, are without a doubt my two favorite control sets. I've played every single set into the thirties (after writing this statement, I went back and verified it was true, which honestly horrified me and made me promise to myself that I'd go outside more), and these two are the only ones I've ever kept up with enough to run through Incarnate trials.

Why /Cold? I've never MADE a /Cold anything that lasted more than a few levels. I would always pair it with ice for thematic reasons and then get mad and quit because I'm not fond of Ice Blast (except on Blasters) or Ice Control.

Too many alts to list.

I have an Illusion/Cold at 50, and it is one of my favorites. On team, my Ill/Cold substantially improves our AV killing speed and safety. Ill/Rad is still my favorite, but Cold is one of the best pairings with Illusion, as the -Resistance in the set helps PA be much better. Since Illusion gets many of its good powers early, it helps you get through the time that it takes until you get those best Cold powers so late.

Electric . . . I just haven't been as impressed with Electric control, mostly because of the conflicts with other sets. The damage is too low to solo until late, and then you rely heavily on the pets. But there are many teams with powers that will conflict with your Electric Control powers - - like anything with Damage over Time. Team with a Fire Controller who likes to use Fire Cages, and you may as well forget about half of your control powers.

My Elec Control experience with with my Elec/Rad and an Elec/Earth Dom. I haven't specifically tried an Elec/Cold -- and I don't exactly have a strong desire to make one. I would rather pair Plant with Cold.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Check out Boomie's thread on Elec/Cold antics: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...73#post3705873

I rolled one of these and have been having fun soloing GMs.

But I agree with Local_Man, Elec/ is a late blooming set for damage, relies on pet damage, and doesn't always play well with others' DoT attacks.

We don' need no stinkin' signatures!

Decided on Ill/Cold, and it's pretty solid so far at level 8. Having prior experience with my Ill/Rad has helped make power choices fairly easy. So far I have Blind, Spectral Wounds, Deceive, Infrigidate, Superior Invisibility, and Ice Shield. This guy already holds his own in a team, and solo is so simple that it's boring.

What strikes me first is how FAST Cold Domination animates. I'm used to my Ill/Rad, where RI leaves you rooted for what feels like forever. Since Infrigidate *IS* my RI/EM for the next thirty levels, I'm glad it fires off as fast as Flares. Missing the the ability to heal myself, but I've taken a more cautious stance when going through missions and haven't actually died since I joined a lv 41 Morality mission team about thirty seconds after I rolled up the character (I asked for an invite as a joke, advertising the controller as being level 1, and they took him anyway).

Now I want a Blaster to duo with...

I was wondering...How easy is it to go Perma PA on an Illusion/Cold Controller versus an Illusion/Radiation? You have a lot more places to put LotG: Recharges into the Ill/Cold build, but you lose AM.

Also, How many slots should I put into Infrigidate and Frostworks? My tentative power selection is, currently, this:

Here's the build I am working towards. I also skipped Frostworks, but it could easily be fit in. I took Fly & Hover AND Super Speed, which I did just because I like having them. I use Arctic Frost + Super Speed for Invis almost all the time.

Hmm...Unless there's a big reason to skip Frostworks I'll probably take it in lieu of Super Speed to help buff up Phantasm a bit more. Superior Invisibility and Arctic Fog seem like enough stealth, unless having both gives some kind of incredible ability like allowing one to run under the radar High Perception enemies like Rikti Drones.

Are you sure they can stack? I was under the impression that activating one stealth power detoggles the other.

Use Group Invisibility instead, since it's a click.

BTW, rikti drones are not just high perception, they see through all stealth, even stalkers at the stealth cap.

If you want to you could just place a cheap Unbounded Leap +stealth proc into sprint and just run it and Artic Fog and pick up something else instead of Superior/Group Invis.

Also like Microcosm said no amount of +stealth in the game can protect you from a rikti drone's sight BUT you can zip by them quick enough before all the other rikti get a chance to attack you. I've stealthed plenty of lady grey's by just using fly/ninja run, sprint(with proc) and artic fog with no problems.

I am presently working on an ill/cold build. So many optiosn totake, so many ideas and then, not much room to select everything ... hahahaha but, I do want to get what is more important to my taste in plying this AT. Unlike /Rad, it has no healing power but if played right, it may not need one.

The toon is currently lvl 30 something but it is a lvl 50 but I did not train up to that point yet.

Here is an idea build that is most likely to built to. Even tho I might redo this build again because its not really a team-oriented build. So I don't know if i should keep the extra shileds for Phantasm or ....

Here's the build. Please critque!

Actually, Helluva, it is a pretty good build. Just for comparison, here is the build that I am working for. (I'm too cheap to go out and buy those expensive purple sets. I'm slowly getting a few of them as drops and then picking up others one by one.) My build has just a few small changes from yours. (Actually, I took your build and made the changes that I plan to follow -- the order of powers I use will be a little different.)

I don't bother slotting for Slow, as several powers have Slow in them such that there is no need to slot it. I like having Recall Friend for stealthing missions. And most of all, slotting Sleet up with procs ends up being a LOT of damage. I used Frost Breath rather than Ice Storm . . . I like the fast-recharging power better.

any middle of the road builds price-wise? I guess that mostly means no purples. with the sig arc merits I can actually afford the LoTGs

I just started an Ill/Cold on a whim, I think I want lots of recharge and S/L defense, or possibly ranged defense if it's easier to achieve, but at lvl15 I haven't yet fully started to figure out how to play with all the toys it offers.

The goal with an Illusion controller is to get enough Recharge to get (or get as close as possible to) Perma-PA. You need something over 203% Recharge. Hasten takes care of 70%, but you have to make up the rest from sets. An Ill/Rad gets an extra 30% from AM, but Ill/Cold doesn't get that. So, you can certainly get a lot of recharge from 5 LotG Recharge and other IO sets, but it will be difficult (or impossible) to get fully to Perma-PA without using purple sets. You run into the limitations created by the "Rule of 5."

Start out with the purple confuse set, Coercive Persuation. It is usually the second cheapest purple set (after the sleep set). Not only do you get 10% Recharge for 5, but you also free up a slot for another 6.25% Recharge set in another power. Without any other purples, you can get close to Perma-PA, especially with the Recharge boosts from Incarnate powers.

Local,

Isnt the defense on your ice shields a bit skimpy? I guess it is fine tho.

It is not a whole lot . . . because I don't really focus on Defense. Most of the time, I don't need it since PA and Phanty are drawing the aggro. I'm in that odd camp who feels that most Controllers, and especially Illusion controllers, don't need to focus on Defense. I have the shield because it is a nice place for a Luck of the Gambler set, and because often teammates have one power or another that stacks defense up to significant levels as long as I have a base. So the Ice Shield provides that base without having to re-slot everything for capped defense.

Frankly, I don't mind faceplanting every now and then. When you have too much defense, the game gets a bit boring with no risk. Without huge amounts of defense, I have to be careful of dangerous situations and use strategy. That part is fun to me.

Cool. I dont focus on defense on most of my Illusionisys either. I usually prefer to also throw on a 3rd slot for ally buffs, usually the lotg def/end, lotg def, and lotg def/global.

But fair enough.

I think Local was talking about his personal Ice Shield toggle and Lewis was talking about his ally shield? Or did I miss something.

Yes, but he did address my question by saying (I believe) that the ally shields were enough baseline def in a team situation. At least I seem to remember. Its hard to check until I submit. Darned brick I am posting with makes it a pain to reference mid post.

Thanks MM!

Ahhh, now I see. I misread the first time through. Personally, if this were a teamed controller I'd disagree with that philosophy. But that's just one opinion.

i have an ill/cold whose really awesome, i personally did take frostwork because it is a great ally buff and helps phantasm stay alive, also with a set of doc wounds it gives you the 5% rech bonus as well as enough enhancement to give anything +994 max hp and with my high rech i can keep half or more of the team at hp cap as well as throwing ice and glacial shields to pump up the defenses

It's true that things like rikti drones, eyes of rularru, etc ignore stealth. Where Illusion is superior for stealthing is that you can confuse them to avoid detection. Powers like Smoke Grenade or Flash Arrow also work but only reduce the detection range a bit.

Stalkers also get to make use of placate to get through tight spots.
