  1. You know those missions that tell us to board a train and go to destinations not normally found on the game map? To the best of my memory, all exit onto an outdoor playing field.

I'd like for the devs to consider adding mission station destinations that are underground or within the basements of buildings. I've ridden several real life rail transports that have such destinations. Some even with mini shopping malls adjacent to the rails.
  2. The shattered bits in Baumtown are part of the old red line. As I recall, destroyed Faultline also had parts of it, which connected to the line in Skyway where they added a station. I used to SS down that line for fun and always wondered where it went, and a little research revealed the old red line. In fact, if you look at the yellow line station in Skyway close enough, you can see that the old red line, now green line, enters under it. Perhaps suggesting that it was originally a junction station.

Also, no one's mentioned it yet, but we have several missions requiring us to board a train for destinations not normally on the game map. So other stations are definitely intended.

You tallied 7643? I only got 7641. I must have missed a couple somewhere. *sigh* starting again...

The Virtueverse link in your sig and in your OP is broken.

I think the problem is the use of "www." I was able to link to the page without it. Titan Industries

re-reading this reminded me: when Marketing starts a major advertising drive (notice I said "when" not "if"), give the tenured players a formal announcement that a new campaign kicks off on day X and involving tie-in Y. That gives us a chance to help out by knowing when to spend more time around the starting zones to shepherd new players.
  6. Alternatively, you could be proactive and contact Paragon Studios and explain your case, that you were there first. They may take your side. Even if not, it would only be the loss of the name. No need to lose the whole character.

You can't stress this enough. Not only are they relatively inexpensive, they have a fairly wide dispersion.

I drive half my state every week to do computer hardware repair. I'd love to drive all the stoplight traffic in the cities with a bumper sticker that reads "My villain beat up your honor student! www.cityofvillains.com" or start conversations in line for the Batman coasters at Six Flags wearing a t-shirt that reads "My other body is a superhero!" with a pic of my favorite signature character, and the CoH logo.

I tend to favor items like those because they can have a wider viewing than comic books. I've not picked up a comic book in possibly 10 years (not counting my old collection), but I've played CoH for 6 of those years. I didn't join because of a comic book. There's a fan club waiting to happen out there that will never darken the door of a comic shop, but will read the bumper sticker or t-shirt of the guy next to him.

Somewhat more expensive: I've been wondering for a long time why CoH doesn't have theater ads, particularly tied to the superhero movies. 10 second blurbs on the pre-show, slides on the discount theater pre-show, Popcorn boxes, poster, etc. If people are lining up to experience superheroism, they've done half the work for you, funneling a target audience to one location. That's a gold mine waiting to be tapped.

Also, referring back to Tokyo's "your customers are your best marketing resource": put us in front of the camera. Let us tell how great a community we are, let us show on our faces why we stay with this game year after year. Folks love to know what the guy who has been in the game so long is thinking.

Yeah, WoW now runs a dungeon finder that compiles a team from several servers to run instanced dungeons. From my couple of months back in that game, I thought it was great, except for frequent long delays in assembling a team. WoW has also been running cross server teaming for PvP action for quite some time.

Had that happen with a door mish once. Heroes walked into the warehouse, rounded the corner, and came face-to-face with a bewildered villain. We all had a good laugh and no one took a shot, the villain just logged out.

My favorite though, as a new wide-eyed-with-wonder player back around 2005, was a bug that was exploited by a team lead. Had a team lead sign us up for the big Atta mission. We got inside the cave and were asked to wait under unusual circumstances. Team lead dropped, went outside, grabbed an entire 'nuther team, and brought them all back in. We switched to local chat. 15 players with wall-to-wall trolls. Man, was that fun! Having since become a vet player with better understanding, I cannot condone exploits. (but, man, was that fun! )

Of course any idiot can look over and see 20 of each running around, but you have to actually go collect some scalps, 30 in all as I recall, and of course the spawns tend to be hazard-zone sized. There are a few other missions like that around too, and they just feel like either padding or busy-work. Old school bloat.

That's surely not the only reason for deserting it though.
At least for me, Striga lacks the kinds of things to retain a player in a zone, those elements that the "hub" zones seem to have in spades: Wentworth's, tram connections, day job locations, vault, crafting locations, and (last I knew anyway) origin stores.

Back when I was running Striga, which was a long time back, I kept having to leave the zone to sell enhancements at best market value when the enhancement tray filled. Teammates did too, holding up teams for significant times. Eventually, I felt it just easier to operate at the hubs.

I really like Striga. If they could somehow park a police station (which doesn't fit Striga, I know) and stores with good prices, I might be tempted to shift my characters back through it. I'd also consider a door to the Midnight Squad and its "best price" store, since that'd be shorter than popping back to Talos and running to all the origin stores.
  12. I think there's plenty of room in the spandex crowd for a nice selection of sashes. Just ask this guy:

I can probably also make good use of a short vest, such as that used by Disney's Alladin, especially if it had a few trim options and was able to layer over spandex or shirt.

Steampunk Willie = Steamboat Willie, first cartoon of Mickey Mouse. And now you have me terribly curious. Would love to see a screenshot.

I know they reworked the spawn locations to tighten them up, but there are whole areas now one never needs to check because nothing ever spawns there. You can tell who are the long-term players on a pug because one or two will go popping into the side room to look, just in case. Though I don't miss hunting that last guy hidden in the back corner of the broom closet, I do miss the small group spawns in the surprise locations. Except in caves.
  16. actually, I once placed second a couple of years ago in a CC to a great costume for a character called "The Carbonated Man" The whole outfit made him look like he was made of carbonated water. It was impressive.

For the sake of fun, you will not be restricted to the Greco/Roman Pantheon, you can even give example what they'd be within that Pantheon and what they'd be outside of it.
And just to add to the fun, let's also consider who canon characters, besides States. Lord Recluse, and Stheno, would be.

    Sakura "Tenshi" Sakuraba-
    Greco/Roman: Nike
    Other: Coyote
Is it the intention of having more than one avatar of a divine being? Because we do have a Coyote already as canon: Matthew Bragg.

I like ObiWan's ideas of a broader range of incarnates.

  20. I've got just one: a PPD officer code-named Blue Watch

I do have several not tied to canon-groups, but whose origins are tied to canon characters. The various tech-origin fighters from The Flying Circus SG were brought to Paragon City by the Red Tiger, Jake Montoya (you can find him in Skyway City). Jake was a friend of their leader, and being a former tech hero, he helped them organize and get their first tech battlegear.

I've also got a few western heroes whose former SG was brought to Paragon City by Coyote. I recently posted their backstory here
  21. Hi, all!

I've seen folks offer up character names before, but I can't recall seeing anyone give up a supergroup concept.

With the arrival of dual pistols, and the coming of the villain-to-hero concepts of Going Rogue, I think the time has come to part with such a SG concept I've held for a while. I'd hate to euthanize it, and would like to find it a good home (or more. Any server can run with it.)

I'm the last of a small supergroup that ran in the very early days of CoH themed to the wild West brought to modern Paragon City (the story below will explain). I still have a couple of my characters, but have no consistency in schedule with which to run and repopulate the SG. I do believe, however, we had a great backstory which I'd love to see another group explore under their own group name. I think the backstory will suggest a few. Role Players especially might like this, and it might also work for Weird Wild West and Steampunk fans. Any server or all servers are free to take this and modify it as they see fit. Just let me know in this thread if you create anything enjoyable!

    The (elaborate) backstory:

(Insert character name here) was once a bloodthirsty member of one of the great Western outlaw bands of the 1870s. The gang ran, unstoppable, until one day when a strange, old man unflinchingly faced them down in the center of the dusty road. It seemed like a sure kill, but something...happened. None are quite sure what, but confusion reigned. Some of the band think the old man was more than he seemed.

Suddenly, the nightmare began. An eerie existence enveloped them, trapping them between life and death, and revealing a monstrous phantasmic stampede of cattle roaring past them. Even more terrifying, the outlaws realized they had a sudden, powerful compulsion to give chase, unwillingly joining numerous doomed souls calling out in the night. As they rode into the blackness, hope dwindled. Justice was done.

As the years roled by, occasionally cattle drivers on the great plains would stare into the night sky and see a frightening visage of the Devil's herd, and hear the plantive wail of the phantom riders who gave chase. The terrified cowboys would swear to be good men.

In time, another man would stand in those plains and see the apparations. He was Matthew Bragg, and as the avatar of Coyote, he called to the riders. The deal was simple, in exchange for freedom, the riders would become lawmen. Who else could better understand evil than those who had walked its path? The minds of many of the riders were too far gone, but some jumped at the chance. As they were freed from their prison and stepped into the living world a few noticed Coyote looked, just for a moment, faintly, disturbingly familiar. The moment passed.

Those freed quickly realized a piece of their phantom existence remained. Coyote explained they each channeled powers capable of aiding them in their new venture. Some found their natural strength enhanced a hundred-fold. Some found their minds enhanced, capable of creating great mechanical wonders. And some found they could channel the terrifying inky blackness of their former prison using it to devastating effect. Coyote promised to train them all.

There remained one other part of their former existence. Each noticed the others' eyes glowed. Coyote explained this was a warning, a reminder of what fate they'd return to if he ever caught them on the wrong side of the law. In time, some would learn to control this effect, others hid it as best they could. It remains to be seen whether they uphold their end of the bargain

As Coyote turned to lead them from the plains, one of the riders called out asking what city so desperately needed a gang of outlaws as lawmen. Coyote looked back over his shoulder and grinned his famous smile. "Paragon City," he said.

I agree with most of what the others have commented. WoW is an abberation, has a steamrolling affect, and puts marketing to good use.

I think your question may have an implication of what it would take to get WoW players to come play CoX. I can answer that on a smaller scale, since I convinced a few WoW raiders to give it a try.

The short answer for their departure from CoH is that the feel of the game, the interactivity, was the hangup. (note these are their opinions, not mine.) They were impressed with things like the character creator and the overall look (even WoW players often don't like their game's graphics). Why they didn't stay, though, amounted to an amalgam of lack of user-created customization materials, especially in regards to the user interface (they were going beyond the customizations allowed currently, and suggesting complete overhauls by the users); a dislike of our "top-down" camera system (their words for it) especially the limited use of 360 camera rotation (they are used to a free-flowing style), minimal PvP, and an "overuse" of instances (they're more used to open worlds with select instances).

One other point they made, mailboxes, will be addressed in part in the upcoming issue.

So basically, if you want a 10 million plus player base, you'd have to recreate all the interactivity of the game to the way any player X wants it. Though I can see some of the points as possibly valid, a complete overhaul neuters a game and makes it little more than a reskin of some other company's game.

I would note as counterpoint that WoW is nearly as old as CoH, and is still going strong. Admittedly I saw a few discussions in-game that indicated population was down (to which I laughed. They have no idea what reduced population means), but there's much anticipation of renewed population with the radical changes of the coming Cataclysm.
