Its Rory's great, defining trait: the overwhelming need to protect and care for someone. It makes him a good nurse, a steadfast centurion, and very dangerous man when Amy is in danger. It also means on the flip side, he bumbles about some when his strong-willed wife is not in danger or great need. Hence the jokes about "Mr. Pond". His trait is what made him team up with "Jen" in the Almost People, because she seemed more at need at the moment than Amy did. I was a bit miffed at him at first when he left Amy with the Doctor until I realized he was acting on this primal motivation, to help and protect.

I find him one of the most refreshing companions in years. I find the marriage to be a good fit on the Tardis. Unfortunately, I can't help thinking that with all these plot twists and turns that the apparent death of Doctor 11 is a red herring and not what River referred to about killing the best man she ever knew. A nagging part of my mind is saying that could mean Rory, and that all these "deaths" he's suffered are foreshadowings of one permanent death. Adding to that feeling was the look on River's face when Rory approached her alone at the jail. To me it looked more than River holding back her secret. Rather, it looked like the face of a child starved to know better a father lost years before.

    Famous Mash Up

Used to love making mash ups. Here's a couple I made from other servers. (though I used slightly different names for them)

    Vincent Price - dark/dark defender

Teddy Roosevelt - rifle blaster/gadgets (this was before dual pistols, which might be better)

Presidents are surprisingly fertile ground for mash ups. I've also got a axe tank, George Washington. My friend had a axe tank for Abe Lincoln in his railsplitting years.
  4. Been waiting for Jodhpurs for a very long time, myself. Since January 2005, when I created Ace Barnstormer, who currently uses the baggy pants. Not bad, but would like to see the variation.

I've also needed them to complete my tank homage to this guy:

don't forget Deloreans with white-walled tires.

Actually, for an 80s pack, I'd like the down vest jacket Marty McFly wore. And around 1981 to '84, preppie & argyle were all the rage. Argyle socks, sweater vests, gator shirts, over-the-shoulder sweaters and knit ties. Just the thing for your classic Jimmy Olsen-types and other nerdy secret identities.

Yep. And if you get the chance to look at that brief sideways glance at the nameplate for Melody Pond (as the story opens), you'll note that the Identification code just below the name has a prominent Omega as well.

I was skeptical about the web's chatter about Omega's return, but seeing the symbol turn up everywhere, even in places like this, its hard to think otherwise.

I thought the Sontaran was interesting, but then, I've always been a fan of that group. Would have been fascinating if the Doctor had a Sontaran for a traveling companion for a time. One who bucked the traditional mindthink of the Sontaran, at least a bit. The lethal lizard lady was cool too, though I don't get why her appearance is so radically different than the others of her kind. Is this the only time Jack the Ripper has been referenced in Doctor Who? I would have thought they'd have done something regarding him before.

The Doctor's hesitancy to speak of his children: Is it established canon that he was married and had kids, or did he simply refer to Susan as his granddaughter, and was instead her adopted grandfather?

Feel free to list from any source. (Films, TV, Novels, Comics, Anime etc…)
Well, I'm guessing Syndrome's volcanic island base (from The Incredibles) would be high on most geeks' list. I find the parallels to Blowfeld's volcanic island in You Only Live Twice to be beyond coincidence, so I'd probably lump them together.

I liked the submersible Atlantis base in The Spy Who Loved Me.

For sheer practicality (yet still extremely stylish) the Nautilus from Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. I'm not certain, though, that an organ onboard a submerged submarine would be something to which I'd want to listen as crew. Nothing louder than a harpsicord, but then I've got sensitive hearing.

I also liked Bruce as the thoughtful President in National Treasure II, and am hoping to see him again in III, assuming they follow up on the story of that one page from the secret book.

I'll be glad if they bring him back on Star Trek. The man is gifted with one of those soothing voices I just love to listen to. Not as soothing as the late artist Bob Ross, but if Greenwood did a voice recording of the New York phone book, I'd probably listen.
  9. Thanks for posting those shots!

I'm appreciating the wider selection of close-fitting shoulderpads. I've always disliked the overuse of gigantic pads, particularly those that are so far from the shoulders as to seemingly offer no real protection.

6 months for movies. 1 month for TV. 1 year for video games. That sounds about right.

I'd add (and some of these are old school):

She could have used the shoes at any time.
    He really was Earnest
    Conner makes the sacrifice
Cary Elwes is only mostly dead

Joshing aside, as regards TV, I think 1 month is too short. Perhaps 1 year, since DVDs come out by then. I'm always happy, regardless, if someone tosses up a nice "spoiler" alert. Without it, I would have known the details of the animated Avatar in advance, which I'm glad I did not. I've also learned that most any thread by BBM should automatically be considered a spoiler alert for Lost, which I hope to see from the beginning one day.
  11. The Thanos + Chernabog combined one: is Chernabog the great demon from Fantasia's "Night on Bald Mountain" segment? It seems the only thing that makes sense from the picture. However, even after working at the Disney Store during a Fantasia video release, I can't say that I've ever heard the demon named.

The Kim Possible: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. one...make it so.

Its very interesting that comic strip artist used the "Kent Allard" name. It shows he's probably read the books. That is the Shadow's name in the pulp books by Walter Gibson. Most folks would have known the Shadow as Lamont Cranston, which is an alias in the books, but is the Shadow's "real" name in the radio series and most recent movie. A couple of the comic series takes on the Shadow have deliberately put these and other names out there doing a shell game shuffle to leave the reader guessing as to which, if any, is the real man behind the Shadow.
  14. I'm pleased with the animation style. It feels like a true successor to the remarkable style of the Batman Animated Series. Not that the other Timm-verse projects were rubbish, not at all, its just that this one seems richer and more lavish than them.

As a Southerner, I'm.....not going to argue with that. Especially knowing a friend of mine loves to make what I term "Dead Sea tea". That is, tea so thick with sugar, you can float stones on it, just like the Dead Sea.

Iced tea is a perfect way to counter our 100 degree/ 90% humidity summers. Due to a form of hypoglycemia, I really shouldn't be drinking the ultra-sweet versions, so I've grown to appreciate the clear, slightly bitter taste of unsweet ice tea. For this I'm a barbarian in my own homeland.

Whenever possible, I like to use the American Classic Tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation.

Reason I ask is because I was on an 8-man team earlier today and the leader insisted that we fight +0 council mobs. Imo, that's fine when you're trying to gauge the effectiveness of your PuG, but he kept it through every mission; and MAN was it boring. I think I stuck with the team for maybe 3 missions until I decided to leave and find another, but when I did quit, I just felt like...ugh. Anyways, that's just one of my buzzkills; don't get me started on rogue fire/kins.
I find the other extreme just as bad, that is, when a team lead insists on running everything on powerful levels that make the team struggle with every mob. Sure, the team might do it, but how many other missions might they have run in the same time for more xp had he dropped it a knotch or two?

On a larger scale, after running the office, the warehouse, the laboratory, the sewer, and the cave ad nauseum, I'm ready for a break for a month or two. Part of the reason I look forward to GR is to see new maps. Hopefully, that doesn't mean new skins on old maps.

    Captain Spectre

Those that know me know I like pulp and radio era heros. Golden Age or Dieselpunk if you will.

Well, I've just learned of a web comic published as tribute to that era: Captain Spectre and the Lightning League by Tom Floyd Looking through the archives, Floyd uses a few art styles. The "daily strip" style is my favorite. What I've been able to read so far seems pretty good. Spectre seem to have bits of several of the pulp era heroes: Shadow, Spider, Doc Savage. Its made to look like a revival of a radio show ended in 1946. It even has club and merchandise offers like such shows did.

  18. Welcome Welcome!

In direct answer to your question:

If you are playing blue side (hero) and don't mind playing a squishy, a fire blaster is serious dps. He's a glass canon, like fire flingers in fantasy games, but his defenses get better with time. I've spent a lot of time soloing with my fire/ice blaster.

When picking a character, be aware of the inherent secondary effects of your powers. For example, if you choose an energy blaster he may require a bit more focus at times on directed shots. That's because energy has an inherent knock-back power, which can drive targets away from a cluster around melee teammates. That's not to say its a bad set, quite the contrary, and one of my most popular level 50 characters proves it. It just means you line up a wall-shot to blast targets into a wall, or focus on taking out the opponent's high-dps which is out of melee range. That sort of stuff.

Scrappers are fun. Two of my six Fifties are scrappers. I've not seen a scrapper set yet I didn't like. My personal favorite is Martial Arts, but you may want lots of AoE action, for example, in which case a spines scrapper might be your pick.

    And in other news:
    • I would add to the other comments on the "trinity" by stating that it can work in the game, its just not required. I've been on lots of teams where there is no tank, for example.
    • I should also like to point out that "Pick Up Group" or PUG is a dirty word in some fantasy games. Here, its a good thing. You meet lots of nice players and get to try out a variety of team configurations. Join a few of the global channels players have set up for finding teams. Of course, super groups and villain groups, the "guilds" of our game, as well as coalitions (super groups aligned together) are also great for finding teams.
    • Be aware that many types have a growing endurance drain that leaves your character panting alot. Many players opt to take Stamina, which greatly relieves that concern. Stamina is first available at level 20. It has a requirement of 2 selections from its power pool set, so you'll need to pick your first of the two selection by level 16, and your second at level 18, if you wish to aquire stamina by 20.
    • Likewise travel powers are first available at 14, but have a single prerequisite from their pool. Those prerequisites are first available with the opening of pool powers at level 6.
    • Elsewhere, you've probably had one or two characters and deeply focused on them. Here, we have serious alt-itis. I'd encourage you, as you start out, to deliberately make and break several types. Train them to level 10, which goes pretty fast, and then decide if you like that or not. None of my first characters still exists. They were all experiments that led to the creation of my first great character.
  19. my worst PUG experience was back in 2005, so I cannot recall all the details. I think all 8 team members, including myself, were stupid. Certainly we all lacked skill. The leader had pulled a Tsoo mission, in one of the lab maps, with that giant 3 tiered room packed to the gills with Tsoo. Somehow, most of the room got aggro'ed. Worse, caltrops were everywhere and it seemed that every 3rd NPC was a sorceror. Sorc's healing Sorc's healing Sorc's...

Keep in mind the game was young, the design was somewhat different back then, and most of us on the team had only a couple months experience at best. Did I mention we were also stupid? We faceplanted, hospital rezzed...rinse, repeat, for 2 HOURS in that room. I've never had the like since. we were on that one door mission for 3 hours. I cannot believe the team stayed together so long. The debt earned was phenominally high. The buddy with me, and I, swore off Tsoo for a long time after that.
  20. okay, thanks. Hmm, I must be mixing CoH up with some other MMO I've played where there is toggled power supression. weird.
  21. aaand I can see right now that getting the TARDIS interiors into the TARDIS exterior will be a challenge.

I have wondered that as well. The suggestion in lore is that the powers appear in cycles. Perhaps the Coming Storm closes a cycle and a CoH/V 2 opens a new one?

  24. I cannot remember if there was a setting to turn off teammates' graphical effects: buffs, aoe's, and the like. Can you help? I've been through the options several times but I guess I'm just blinded to the right line. I needed to use this today running cave missions on redside when a pair of players both had intense black for all their effects, which created close to a blackout on my screen in close fighting quarters.
