    What's an "alt"?
  3. One moment that encapsulates why I like to play CoH:

Mission team was gathering at mission door, a mausoleum in the graveyard on Striga. Someone accidentally aggro'd some werewolves and the team was about to wipe as I arrived on scene with my first hero, an Eng/Dev blaster.

This sequence was just so epic in a micro kinda way, starting with a lucky-landing SuperJump that perched me on a ledge above the mission door, looking down on my teammates getting their butts kicked.

Unleashed Energy Torrent, knocking all the baddies away from my beleaguered 'mates, giving them the two seconds of breathing time they needed to regroup and finish off the mob.

I'm sure we've all had dozens, if not hundreds of moments like this, but something about the "nick of time-iness", the way the jump landed, the resulting camera angle down on my teammates, the rockin'-ness of Energy Torrent, and the feeling like I really was a hero, just for a second there, instilled in me an eternal love for this particular piece of gaming software.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I live in NYC - my apartment is on the corner of the bldg above a busy intersection, my office is right above 6th Ave., and the honking makes me want to shove pencils in my ears.

So I'm standing at Ghost Falcon on P.I., upgrading ALL my enhancements, and it's a little traffic circle right there, right?

    And the cars are driving around and around, honking every 5-10 seconds, around and around. HONK.....HONK HONK...honk HONK...honk...HONK HONNNNNK...HONK..HONK.....HONK HONK...honk HONK...honk...HONK HONNNNNK...HONK..HONK.....HONK HONK...honk HONK...honk...HONK HONNNNNK...HONK..HONK.....HONK HONK...honk HONK...honk...HONK HONNNNNK...HONK..HONK.....HONK HONK...honk HONK...honk...HONK HONNNNNK...HONK..etc.

And I had to turn off my speakers.

I don't like the car horns. I get enough of them in real life, don't need them in my "relaxation".

Ideally there'd be a switch for specific sounds in Options.

    Please?

But um...so...can the pre-SSK Sidekick/Mentor system be considered a "bug"?

    No? WAI it was? REEEEALLY?

Looking back, I think "fixing" the SK/Mentor system with SSK has got to be my favorite "patch" ever.

Yeah this is my only issue with there being a surfiet of DS vills right now - the big ones are SO BIG - you put more than 3 or 4 in a tunnel or tight hallway and forget about moving around, targeting what you want to target, or even following the battle.

This weekend I spent half a battle standing on someone's head in a cave - jumped up there to target a specific baddie and *couldn't get down* it was so crowded.

But as long as you don't mind fightin' blind, tons o' demons are pretty unstoppable!
  8. Amazing as always Sammi!

If I weren't already hooked, I'd wanna play!

Casual player question: What are the handwritten pages at TC: 4:30?
  9. My favorite memory has to do with what War Witch refered to as "the best community in the entire MMO space."

CoH was my first online gaming experience, and Man, was I lost. Got giggled at for not being able to figure out you had to click on the security guard to pass through the door to the Hollows (among other goofs).

But then a player on a high-level 'troller named Orion Arms took pity on me, took me under their wing, and very patiently, over the course of a few sessions, taught me the ins-and-outs of MMO gaming in general, and CoH gaming specifically.

I've never forgot how relieved I felt having met her (after some early frustration), and how knowing she would be there to help me, made me that much MORE anxious to log in and play.

I've been trying to pay that kindness and consideration forward for years now...hope I'm living up to the example Orion Arms set for me in those early days.

A mini-boss has a power like that in the game Dragon Age: Origins.

(one of the trapped spirits in the Brecilian Forest)

Combating it is a pain in the butt - but the first time I saw him do it I was like

    WANT!!!

    o.O

Forbin you never cease to amaze...in a pretty creepy kinda way.

All well and good, but canon & lore aside, this is still a money-making software enterprise, and the way the game makes money is people buying and renewing subscriptions, i.e. spending time in the game. The more time spent in-game, the more money the game makes.

So, as I said, canon & lore may have something to do with it, but giving players another mandatory time-sink by forcing them to travel from one station to the other as part of the "commute" also makes sense in a real-world kinda way.

    Fix't.

Personally I'm grateful that portions of this game require a certain level of intelligence, diligence, and care, as I'm convinced it's one of the things keeping the average I.Q. around here as high as it is.

If one (present company excepted) can't be bothered to read through the tutorial and/or do a little poking around online in order to grasp the concept, maybe they're just not cut out for the CoH community in the first place.

After the cities are the Hazzard Zones, on the order of levels, except two of then, that are my favorite and have emphasis (DA and RWZ).

Last, almost hidden, are the Hazzard I hate most (PP) and Pocket D...

But they are all color coded (Purple the most used, Green the cities, Blue the Hazzard) and near the entrance...

Yeah no offense intended, but this kinda thing is what drives me NUTS in SG bases.

Why do so FEW designers put their TPs in ALPHABETICAL ORDER by Zone?

It seems to be all the rage these days, to put them in order by Level - which is somewhat arbitrary and assumes all members of the SG (even newbs) actually KNOW what zones correlate to which level.

While EVERYONE knows the alphabet! Without having to stop and think "So would Steel be BEFORE Bricks? What about Hollows? Is RWZ near the Cimerora TP?

C'mon everyone, say it with me!

Welcome BP and I applaud your cajones, as there appears to be a bit of an anti-marketing funk forming lately.

Now I don't know bupkis about Marketing, but I quoted the above player to remind you that you have one thing going for you that other MMOs may not - an extremely bright, dedicated, and more importantly, "heroic" fanbase.

We *want* to help you get the word out about CoX, to bring new players and ensure its continued existence.

If you can come up with a devious scheme that includes using US to help you carry it out, I think you'll be pleased with the response, and results.

And I would put forward that not ALL TV advertising is prohibitively expensive. Smaller cable channels, off-peak hours, short Teaser ads, etc. can help defray costs.

I'll weigh-in and say I never minded the idea of in-game ads - but yeah that running shoe was an...unfortunate first choice.

Oh and Mass Transit media: fun ads could be like: "Wouldn't you rather be flying (super-speeding/super-jumping/teleporting)?" or "If you could fly you'd be home by now" kinda things.
  23. An intriguing question, one I've not seen before...

I can't think of any reason to leave a toon at a lower level on purpose, especially with Orobouros available if you're just dying to do a particular arc...

Hmmm I'll be interested to see if anyone else can come up with a reason.
