Development costs hit one quarter then profits come in the next. That scares investors. To buffer the only-exists-on-paper gap they tear down Paragon, "saving" the operating costs and giving them a blank check for tax writeoffs since they couldn't find a buyer they can put whatever they want in for losses. Do I have proof? No. But they are a corporation and all they and their investors care about are this and next quarter.

CoH was more of a Paragon Studios game than an NCSoft game and look where that got them. When Arenanet leaves NCSoft, I might consider GWx.

It is still a bit too soon to come in here crowing about one of the games that benefited from the accounting trick that CoH may have been sacrificed for.

As a non-free form, it can be a claws stalker (there's ranged options too, but no retractable claws options, just ones like the viper claws, take acrobatics and you've got a ninja running claws stalker in CO). The assassin's strike is stupid silly too good to be true powerful but at this point in time, I don't really mind some over powered silliness.

The stealthed movement animation is a bit weird but I just leave my acrobatics on so I don't have to see the goofy default run.

My question is are all the paid (for silver) ATs more powerful than the free ones like the Night Avenger is or did I just hit the jackpot when I wanted to remake one of my favorites?

This will be lost on NCSoft but hopefully not its investors. Posterior anatomy haberdashery in the name of short term profit through accounting tricks can kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
  9. Unfortunately one area where CO entirely surpasses CoH is making things unobvious, inconvenient, or both in its menus.

First there's the level 10 bit.

Then, when you can buy Zen, even if you go to the store from CO, you can't use that Zen until you go and transfer it to the game you clicked the buy Zen link from.

It's got gamepad support, sidekicking, and a costume creator so I'm going to give it a fair shake (it doesn't hurt that my favorite stalker was claws/wp and Night Avenger is basically that, just stuck with viper claws) even though it has tried its best to get me to go away at this early stage.

Would it be great having more premade faces? sure, but it is not related to the potentiality of the character creator. There are features in CoH that CO does not have, but the main disadvantage is in the number of costume pieces which is basically a matter of time.
Sliders can only do so much to vary the singular face especially when you can't change angles. Every face will be simple deformations of that one face and thus will all look similar.

My guess is that they just assumed everyone would always be wearing a mask or helmet and thus they didn't need to have different faces. The very limited costume selection before you get your first 10 would've turned me off if I was just casually sampling the game. (Why oh why did they only include the ugly hair options for males?)
  11. I'd have been much less annoyed at the Wade situation if they'd removed him from Sharkhead like they did to all the bluesiders they offed. Don't give that poor excuse for poorly utilized "shock" and "suspense" any more credit than he is due.

Wade to me will be forever more be nothing but a punk that got played and left to rot by Nemesis/Silos, hopefully without the slightest second thought or regret.
  12. Think of it as less a punishment and more of incentive to work for someone that isn't the embodiment of all that is wrong with corporate culture. If they really want my money they can disassociate themselves from NCSoft.

(For the record, I hate both the player AND the game. No "hate the game not the player" cop out for me.)
  13. Having finally hit 10 with a character and opened up a lot of stuff (including being able to throw money at them to try the AT I thought might be one that'd get me to throw more money at them) I have to say, what the hell were they thinking locking all those costume parts (and everything else) behind level 10?!?

I may be the oddball in this case but if there's a free trial, I do that, then if it I like it I might subscribe, not subscribe and then see if I like it (or are golds locked until 10 as well?). The costume creator is the first thing you see, why you'd limit that part so much (but then shortly toss you into talents, specs and power abilities with little useful explanation of ratings and whatnot) is beyond me.

While not the same type of claws as claws, the Night Avenger has claws and stealth and acrobatics is basically ninja run, so at this initial stage, I am happy with my money thrown in Cryptic's direction. I would have been a lot happier if I could have just done so from the start. Seeing that the gear is six slots I'm a bit less apprehensive of that aspect. My windows install might be getting some use again.

Your account must pass the following criteria:

So that's not just a under level 10 restriction I was running into.

I'd kill for some "day job" clothes, well, I will kill/arrest/whatever for them since I know that more costume parts are unlocked once one of your two hit level 10, but wow did they restrict the character creator.

Being able to buy points before 10 would be nice too. It's hard enough to be motivated to get through the intro as it is and then you can't try the archetype that looks interesting makes it feel even more like pointless drudgery.
  16. Sadly, I doubt NCSoft realizes that when their last accounting trick fails and they are consigned to the corporate round file they will not have a eulogy as grand as CoH has.

To be pedantic the Warcraft race predated the movie by a number of years.

And in a game where you can easily equip a character to solo max group sizes at max difficulties and have bosses that are also nothing but bags of HPs (Reichsman) and that also just played me-too by adding an endless endgame treadmill, I'd be a bit more careful with the self parody card.

I think three servers should suffice.
For a "dead" server (of a dead game) Guardian has surprisingly good vital signs. 3 teams ran Sara Moore saturday night.

Ahh cityfolk, if there isn't 20,000 people per square foot it's a barren wasteland.

Really the closest thing to e-bling in this game are Pylon runs time.
Run +4/x8 solo on SOs only and say it's too easy.

Set IOs are the cheat codes of CoH. Saying you beat Doom without dying once while using iddqd doesn't mean all that much.

The lack of an endgame is one of the things that really sold me on CoH and if the post-shard incarnate system had been in place when I started I wouldn't have been nearly as enthusiastic about the game. Leave the endless endgame treadmill to WoW.

  22. If there's one with the community I want to be around, I'd give it a go.

If not, probably use it for access to the costume creator.
  23. NCSoft's "shut up and go away" message was a pretty clear signal they weren't going to be involved with saving CoH so there isn't much purpose to using the official boards, other than saying the farewells to the community.

I really hope you browse by reading the files you manually download using the command line. (Even Lynx might be a bit too hypocritical).
