As soon as they announced Dark Blast / Dark Manip for blasters, that meant they had also solved the dark sets for Controllers and Dominators.

Oh I know, but the fact remains that we don't have any idea of how long it will be before the next proliferations happen, nor do we the players know what changes are going to be made to the set, if any.

If they half way gut Dark Miasma (say to use those powers for Dark Control) then I probably won't give a crap about it, unless it gets some good powers for replacements.

The whole reason I want Dark Miasma for Controllers is so that I can use it (particularly Fearsome Stare) to fill in for Gravity's lackluster control. If they were to remove FS from Dark Miasma (without replacing it with some sort of controllery effect) then that completely destroys it for me.

Thus I'm not going to let myself get too excited until we know the details.

I believe you would only have a change for it to Proc once on your character, when you initially activate it.

All further changes to proc (checks every 10 seconds) would apply the buff to the pseudo-pet the power spawns not the player, as the pet is the caster of the knockdown effect.

So it's not going to work as a source of constant self haste, if that's what you were hoping for.

Honestly there's no reason why a Control set couldn't have a single target disorient. Just none of them currently do. (also Stun Grenade is already an aoe disorient)

While I prefer new shinies, I'm perfectly fine with new sets recycling some powers. I don't think I'd care much for new sets made entirely of recycled powers though.

I really don't want to get TOO excited over this, it could still be a long way off and we don't know what, if any, changes will be made... but still, Grav/Dark here I come!

That's a lot of grenades.... with none of them actually dealing (more than utterly trivial) damage.

    That just ain't right.

If you hit the Upgrade Plot button instead of the Edit Base option when in your entrance room, it'll list your total items by category, decorative/energy/etc.

The second are Slot Levels. Whenever I get to one of these, I'm not so excited. I mean slots are nifty and all - and yay, I can improve my new things. But in the end, I'm nourishing a sense of disappointment, because I don't have a new thing to do.

so... once 32 happens, I start looking at that vast wasteland of levels that will only give me slots, before I can get another power, at 35.

And since levelling seems REALLY slow above 30, I just get dejected.

By now, I have a few 32s, one 35, one 38, and thanks to the encouragement of some friends, a 50.

But that long wasteland between 32 and 35, and 35 and 38... (and further into the 40s)

How do you guys handle it? Do slots make you happy?
I'm kind of in the same boat. I mean, powers are fun and exciting. Slots are meh and boring.

Getting new powers is more engaging, because it requires adaptation of your attack chains, alteration of your power trays (if you're anal like me and have to have powers is specific orders), etc etc.

New slots, while yes they improve my powers which is always a good thing, don't require any thought or adjustment beyond a one time "Should I slot for recharge, or end redux?" and then you're right back to playing the exact same way you did for the last 2-3 levels.

On the other hand, Umbral Torrent is given to Blasters, who are focused on doing damage regardless of the enemy's range, and rely in major part on what control effects they can find in order to stay alive. Yes, that means you're going to have to be careful when you use it. However, that's still doing better than Shockwave.

For what it's worth, I agree it's not the best setup. But presumably the devs didn't want to duplicate Nightfall from the epic pools, so it's what we get. And I stand firm by the idea that it does better overall than plain ol'Torrent from the other sets, at least.
Shockwave is a power in the Sonic Blast set. (as well as the Claws set)

It's probably the combo I'll aim for as I've never touched Dark Blast and I want to focus on that aspect of the character. And I love a good specialty character, this one focusing particularly on life drain...
Ranged boosted Tenebrous Tentacles comes out to ~64feet(assuming no range slotting in the power itself), which definitely makes it easier to utilize the two cones together... at least for 1 of the 7 possible Dark/* combinations.

I think the most reasonable Dark/ builds are going to be Dark/Energy and Dark/Psi. Energy gives you the added range to make ATorrent's Knockback not conflict so much with Tentacles. Psi gives you an extra cone so you can just skip ATorrent.

I'm firmly of the opinion that Abyssal Torrent was poorly thought out. ("Let's take one of the set's primary AoEs and staple on a power most people skip, with an effect many people can't freaking stand!" "That's a GREAT idea!")

Knockdown would obviously be better, but the real problem would be if it had something like 60% chance to knockback, which would cause them to spread.
It's the 80ft range that's the problem IMO. You've got an extremely long and fairly narrow cone that knocks mobs away from you, that's supposed to be part of your AoE attack chain... when your only OTHER AoE is another cone with HALF the range.

    It doesn't. Make. Sense.

    Spirit Tree

I'd be perfectly happy if they just cut down the duration/recharge.

With it's current duration most teams have moved on long before the tree/beacon has expired, meaning that outside of an AV fight a large portion of what benefit the Tree actually does have is wasted.

I would suggest a 30second Duration with an ~70second Recharge.

That way you're able to resummon it as you move along, and still has roughly the same uptime if you're standing in one spot. Perhaps also cut the end cost from 13 to 7.8, and maybe shorten the casting time (since you have to use it more often).
  17. I forget even if it is, and I check the forums every day. I'm terrible at that.

At the moment though I've only got a secondary account running (Yay $1.99 sale) cause money's too tight these few months to even justify spending an extra $15 (Boo real life), so I don't even have a character I could run TFs on even if there was one scheduled.

I very much agree with this. The character just ended up being pulled in so many directions, with so many conflicting motivations that she seemed completely off her rocker.

Really I think it would depend on the specifics of the encounter.

Most likely though a few demonstrations of the marines' "Magic" and the Romans would surrender without much need for real fighting.

Now realize that both of those sets have -resistance debuffs, multiplying the damage potential of both sets.

I don't even want to talk about the damage proc potential (also boosted by the -resistance debuffs!), as a shirtful of drool isn't very attractive.

I'd go Storm/Storm and issue a written apology to my endurance bar beforehand. All the kaboomy goodness!
Eh. For me the term "Support" as it pertains to archetypes(classes) had it's genesis in CoH, as every other game I'd ever played (or heard of at the time) didn't have Support classes, they had Healers.

Thus when I say Support, I always mean it in a sense as it applies to all Buff/Debuff/Heal powersets, Storm and TA(OSA) included.

Would I play a Storm/Storm or Storm/* dual support? Highly unlikely. I don't even like Storm as a Defender set. IMO it's far more useful on Controllers, particularly where the set's two damage dealing pets are concerned, as most(many) control sets have ways of preventing the inevitable scatter those very pets cause.

The Life Drain buff is pretty freakin' nice, even with just SOs. Abyssal Gaze'll need some Frankenslotting, but will be extremely potent when slotted properly (I'm so far just using SOs).

I can't see it doing too well as a Blapper set, and as has been mentioned, that means no real synergy with Darkness Manipulation, but it seems like a solid set on its own.

I'll also say that while I skipped Umbral Torrent given my secondary, it looks like it'll be a nice tool; since the damage is good and the knockback is guaranteed, it's pretty handy as a control tool, but on large teams, you might want something else as a backup.
Yeah, really I can only see myself pairing it with /Mental to fill in for the AoEs, which works fine with me as I have a Dark/Psi defender that could use a reroll.
  23. Would I make a character that was Support only..?

In many other MMOs? Yeah sure. Attacks on support types are typically pretty useless, and you spend all of your time focused on team support (and may be actively derided by your team if you don't). Plus I almost always play support in those-other-games-that-must-not-be-named anyhow.

In CoH? No, no probably not. The games are structured differently, and I just don't know that I would find it fun and engaging.

Take this (Post-war exposition) put it on a small ship, say a Nova Class so that you can have the main bridge crew and a set number of recurring crewmembers instead of a constant parade of random extras.

That way they can develop stories beyond just "What's the Captain et al. up to today?" You can have various episodes that focus on say, the Science team or the night shift, without having to waste time each episode setting up who the heck these people are, and it makes sense that you would see the same group of junior officer types again, cause of the small crew size.

It being on a ship gives you the freedom to move about encountering various happenings and keeps the setting fresh and interesting, but the Nova class, like Voyager's Intrepid Class, is capable of planetary landing so you can have the ship also serve as a base of operations for planetbound episodes.

Given the era it would be set in you could also include representatives from non-Federation powers if you wanted. Perhaps what with it being a period of relative cooperation between the powers, you could have a Romulan exchange officer. Maybe your mission is part of the Cardassian Relief effort, so you need a special liaison to the Detapa Council on board. This gives the option of developing storylines detailing cultural/moral/ethical transition and conflict between peoples.

Tons of options you could work with.
