Defunct Origins?

Blood of the Black Stream was a mentioned Epic AT, not an origin.

There were the ones we have now, as well as things like gadgeteer, etc.

Down in my guides, I've got two things that may interest you - follow the link. One on the "original COH trailer" (the video, unfortunately, seems to have vanished, but there are links to dev diaries and, I believe, a Wayback internet archive of the COH site with the old origins) as well as "EAT at War Witch's" which will go into current, killed, and mentioned-but-not-implemented Epic ATs.

While I cannot speak to other origins, the Blood of the Black Stream was originally a concept for a Villain Epic Archetype, along with Coralax.

Originally, back in the early, early days, I think the "Blood of the Black Stream" was part of other "Epic ATs" (sort of) that, to my recollection, also included "Coralax", "Avilian", "Incarnate", "Nictus" and the aforementioned "Blood of the Black Stream". These other "ATs" have been retired; Incarnate has become an Origin and Avilians (a Winged AT) became wings that anyone can wear.

It's all ancient knowledge now, and only half-remembered in my brain.

American Dawg, Starblaze, Neanderthal Joe, Shining Dawn, Tokamak Dragon, Stinger Incarnate, Burning Tyger, Dover Tornado, Big Roach, Dark Paladin, Archmage Wylde, Kings Row Hornet, Prancing Deer
Avogadro, Science Lord
Edgar Nightcraft, Doc Cicada, Chupa Macabre, Dr Forchtenstein, Blood Shrew

It took a bit of checking, but the original seven origins were: Altered Human, Mutant, Superior Human, Magical Powers, Mystical Artifact, Cyberware, and Gadgeteer. This was changed sometime early in CoH's development before launch, among various other things. Here's a link to an interview that mentions them.

As for Epic ATs, those came about later on (though we obviously didn't get all of the ones that were talked about). Though those would probably still fit under the existing five origins we have (look at the EATs we do have for examples of that).

Despite the fact that the AT never came to fruition, there are still plenty of references to the Blood of the Blackstream in the game, even today.

Technically the only other origin beyond the 5 already in the game is Divine.

Uber Talgrim - level 50 emp/dark defender
Uber Rod - level 50 dark melee/regen scrapper
Rod Valdr - level 50 invuln/SS tanker
Talgrim - level 50 ninja/dark mastermind

OMG!! Please add these costume designs now!

I class that under Magic.

Really? I class it under natural.

Definitely "magic."

Definitely? Really depends on how you're building your universe, and how you define a "god." I don't think "definitely" really comes in to play when we're discussing how other people might build their character's back story.

Oh no, I understand what you're saying. From within the dynamics of the RP/the game I don't care if your angels are tech origin. Which, by the way, sounds awesome. I was speaking from an external perspective. For me, anything in this game with "spooky supernatural powers" qualifies as magic.

... which shows part of the flexibility - and vagueness - of origins.

Let's stick with "spooky supernatural" powers.
Am I a god/demon/angel/FSM? To me, that's natural.
Am I a ghost? Natural, too. My walking through walls, etc. is just part of what I am.
Was I *granted* the powers by a god/artifact? Magic.
Am I "tapping into the netherworld" by use of the SuperShinyThingy I just made? I might be *summoning* ghosts... but I'm doing it by tech.
Am I using technology, but so steeped in mysticism I don't know better? Tech or magic. Depends how I see it. ("Technomage," basically.)
Was I born with an ability to make you see "ghosts"/amplify fears/etc that apparently nobody else has? Mutant.

I feel ya. I just have... issues with certain words. Part of my over analyzing. Take the word "natural" for instance. To me, that word is either meaningless or just another way to say "everything." Here, have some tautology: Everything springs from the universe, or the multiverse if you want to get all macro. Unnatural becomes another way to say abnormal, but abnormality is natural. That is to say, abnormality is a condition that arises due to conditions of existence or... nature. So, if we regard an ant hill as a "natural" phenomenon we should see a car or a gun the same way. This ties in somewhat with the idea of the extended phenotype.

From this rather semantic perspective all the origins are natural. It occurred to me recently that the Origins should be looked at more as moods or flavors than actual technical descriptions.

Well said. And in that case, perhaps they're more important than we give them credit for. Hrm.

What origin a ghost is really depends on why they are a ghost, to me.

Died and just didn't move on? Natural

Cursed? Magic

Somehow summoned/made? Either Magic or Tech.

I could also see Mutant, if they were one with Out-of-Body capability and something happened and made them stuck as an ethereal being.

That is just really cool to see how the game came about and changed.
