Fun With 3D

I saw this neat trick done with a pic, and I really liked it (the trick). The pic I saw was totally NSFW, and not even safe to link to on these forums, so no, you can't see the pic that inspired me... o_o

Anyway, I finally learned how to do it. Here's my fancy cup, in 3D!

You have to look between the two images, and let your eyes relax and start to cross. When you see a single image between the two images, you'll find that it's in 3D! If you can do those Stereogram images, then you should be able to do this. Another trick that people say works is to look between the two images, and look through your monitor...

For those interested in doing something like this, here's what you do:

Take a picture of your subject, holding as still as you can. Then, move a little to the left (or right, your choice), and take a second picture. Basically, you're trying to replicate how each eye views the subject of your image.

Once you have your pictures on your computer, open them up in your favorite image editor, and resize them (most cameras take large pictures. I took these with my new cell phone's 3 MP camera, and they were 2048x1536!). Make a new image with the same height as your source images, but twice the width. I suggest you place each image on a seperate layer. Of course, if you don't do a lot of image editing, you (probably) have no idea what I mean, and if you do do a lot of image editing, you probably use layers and don't need to be told that.

Ta-da! You've made your very own 3D image!

Hey worked for me You have to kind of force your eyes to unfocus, then for me the middle image was totally sharp and in 3D, cool trick

I keep blinking before the pictures merge. I can't help it. My eyes start hurting if I don't, and I feel like I'm going to cry lol.

I have astigmatism, I can see how it could work but all I get is a fuzzy mess. I'll stick with my phone for 3D. It was totally expensive, but even without the 3D it's probably the best phone on the market.

Nope. Just bought a new phone, a Motorola EX124G from Tracfone with triple mins. for life. I don't use a cell phone enough to need/want any kind of contact phone.

But I digress.

I wasn't sure it would work with my phone taking the pix, since it's only a 3 MP camera, and I'm used to the 10 MP DSLR I have.

I can never do these type of optical illusion. I can never get those hidden image ones either. Everyone always says "just do this" or "just do that" and it never works for me.

likewise, i stare and stare and stare and all i see is two cups.

I do know i have impaired eyesight tho, and my right eye is very dominant, make me pretty much one-eyed.

Hmmm doesn't work for me. I have exceptional eyesight and I can usually spot those hidden image illusions pretty quick but I just see two cups here.

ok, here's a weird thing. The time i did it i had my glasses on and it worked. Just now, i have my contacts in, same prescription, but now i can force the image to the centre as before but it's not in focus or in 3D.

You guys not getting it, man up, force your eyes to unfocus! It's not just staring at it, think like your trying to get a laser eyes power to work but you don't know how to. It's like lifting a truck but with your eyes, strain like mad to do it... this probably isn't good optical advice to be fair, but it's the only way i can explain it.

If you can do the Magic Eye stuff, but it's been awhile since you last did one, it can take awhile to get your eyes to remember how to do them.

I just looked at my pic, and it took me about 3 mins. to finally see the 3D cup again. Haven't looked at it since I made the initial post.

I also noticed that while the cup seems to be in 3D, the little bit of the straw at the top isn't...

ok, edit the above, it's not my contacts, it's probably coz i'm quite drunk, i can easily shift the two images to the middle but it just xon't focus, so logic says i'm doing it right, but i'm at fault. I'll try it again tmw with contacts.

Works for me. This is also the technique I use for those "spot the difference" puzzles. All the differences pop out like they are on fire.

Nice job, Kheldarn! I love doing these things! All I do is force my eyes to cross, and then start to slowly uncross until everything falls into place. And wolah!

I can never get these to work. The only ones that work for me are the animated gifs that also make me kinda motion sick. But, well, I made one to demonstrate using your cup. It would work better if the pictures lined up better, but that's forgivable since you are not a tripod. Anyway, here's like what I mean. Hopefully it doesn't give anyone a seizure...

Got this one to work pretty quick. You actually have to cross your eyes so a 3rd cup appears between the 2. Then relax your eyes so they can focus.

Neat!

This is all a trick to get people sitting in front of their computers with eyes crossed while at work.
