I'd go with a Rikti Invasion as well. It was being caught up in a Rikti Invasion in Kings Row that originally sold me on CoH, back when I had a trial account.
I had literally no idea what was happening when the sky turned green and the War Walls went down - I still love that noise. The running battle I had with the Rikti that day remains one of my fondest memories of the game, so yeah, if we have to go out, that's as good a way to go as any. -
Quote:As far as I know the only source for the 'fact' that they won't sell to avoid competition is that blog by Unsub, and I remember enough from when he posted on these forums to be extremely sceptical of his opinion.People keep throwing around the comment that they won't sell to avoid competition.. but the thing is unless they have another Superhero MMO in the works for regions outside of Korea there ISNT going to be any competition for their profits.
Which makes the prospect of their holding onto the IP even more petty.
We know they were willing to at least discuss selling Auto Assault back to Netdevil but no agreement was reached, for whatever reason. But that was years ago, and as others have said NCsoft's circumstances have changed, both financially and, it appears, in terms of their attitude to the US/EU market.
So until someone in a position to know says that NCsoft will not sell CoH, I'm keeping an open mind. -
Ah well, I'm not actually subbed myself at the moment (annoyingly), otherwise I'd definitely do so. Just curious as to why I've seen so little comment on it from either the company, or from those who do have extended subscriptions.
-
Have you heard anything at all from NCsoft about refunds? It seems to me that the company would be obliged to tell customers who have paid in advance what will happen when the service they've paid for no longer exists.
Personally I'm not expecting much or anything in the way of communication from NCsoft to the wider playerbase, but I am surprised that we're now well into this working week and there's been no follow up from them to those who've already paid. -
Quote:Not quite all. We have access, and everything in the store is free, but we're not seen as VIPs.Beta has been turned on for all (just recently).
This means for those who've lost VIP status can copy their toons to Beta and play there as if I24 went live and everything in Paragon Market is free and access all VIP content.
Meaning I had to 'buy' my inventions licence, access to the tips system and the SSAs, etc, but content that can't be bought separately is still off limits. No story arcs in Dark Astoria, for example. Still, it's a lot better than nothing and I'm grateful to them for granting us this access.
And as a sidenote, I was also able to transfer one of my 50s from live, despite her slot being locked on the live server where she resides, so that's something. -
Quote:The 'become a VIP' button won't load, but the Shop button (both in-game an on the character select screen) is working just fine for me on the beta server.Hm. Just tried loading into beta and I guess I misunderstood. I thought they meant that everyone on beta counted as VIP so we could play with things, and I know they said all the store stuff was supposed to be available to everyone now. Store won't load and it's not seeing me as a VIP. Oh well.
It's better than nothing. At the least I'm looking forward to being able to run the signature story arcs, as well as unlocking inventions, Night Ward, and the newer power sets. And given that none of my unlocked characters on the live servers are above lvl 20, I'm glad that I've been able to transfer over a 50 to beta to experience some higher level content. -
Quote:I'm not so sure that much can be read into the speed of it. Yes, it was sudden, but looking at NCsoft's history it seems like they're just following standard shutdown procedure and timelines. Now if NCSoft had announced that they were looking for a buyer a year ago, and that failure to find one would lead to the game shutting down...
So I think the speed is also a significant point to note, especially if you discount sudden changes in licensing.
I was looking at a site the other day that had a long list of closed down MMOs - most of which were far east focused titles I've never heard of, and it struck me that this happens more often than most of us think. Most of the announced shutdowns I've seen, even of western titles, are accompanied by mostly a sense of resignation to the inevitable, so the big difference here is in the response of the CoH community to the news - I have never seen such a concerted effort to try to do something to try to avert the end. I very much doubt NCSoft expected that either.
Quote:And lets be honest here even if TN get the cash and restart the servers they're going to lose a large number of players who don't know any of this and just want a game to play. (Because I bet there are people still playing who have no clue as to what is going on.) They'll also lose people who think that as an unproven games producer they aren't trust worthy.
So even if the players do pull a rabbit from their metaphorical hat the game is pretty much doomed. -
The most (perhaps only) optimistic thing I took from it was that they said they would definitely NOT make everything on the Market free. So long as they're trying to maintain 'business as usual' with the ingame economy and more importantly the F2P model, maybe it's still viable for another backer to take over. From that point of view I guess we'd have more to worry about if they did give us everything for nothing.
I dunno, maybe I'm really reaching for a positive spin. I don't think anyone's coming away from this more optimistic, but that's not Z's fault. Kudos to him and the others for still showing up.
Sad to watch this though. -
I've rerolled my entire roster (except my two 50s to keep the VEATS and EATS open) several times - usually when reorganising them across the servers, so no... wouldn't be a problem.
Doesn't Steelclaw restart every six months? Or is it every issue? Or when there's a y in the month, or... -
1. Manticore and Ghost Widow both appeared in the original Going Rogue trailer - were there plans at any stage for them to switch sides or become something like Rogue/Vigilante patrons?
2. So what was the real story behind Tyrant and Dominatrix? (Yes, I'm a terrible person for even asking that...) -
Quote:I suspect the legal issues with Richard Garriott that eventually followed would also have played a part in NCsoft's decision to hold onto the property. What I am getting at here is that the paradigm of expectations between consumers/fans and the publishers of games has been altered between when Tabula Rasa was shut down and now. And the Mass Effect fans were the ones that showed how it could be done.
NCSoft is also in a MUCH more vulnerable financial state now than they were during the Tabula Rasa days.
As an MMO that's proven it has a (very) loyal fanbase and can still make a profit, CoH could be attractive to outside investors. Of course, given how business works noone involved in any discussions is likely to be able to say much about it in public until it's a done deal, one way or another.
So, fingers crossed, and hope for the best. -
Quote:Possible, but the only place I've seen that theory advanced is that blog people keep linking to, and since Lemur Lad pointed out that it's written by Unsub I'm finding it hard to take as serious analysis. I haven't read these forums regularly for months, but I still remember him as having an axe to grind. Actually, not so much an axe as a full armory. They most likely won't sell it for the same reasons they didn't sell Dungeon Runners, Exteel and Tabula Rasa. If the chance is there to make money on it with another company at the helm, why compete with a product you wrote off as a failure?
Of all their IPs I think CoH is the most likely that they would let go elsewhere. It's never fitted in very naturally with the rest of their games - on the NCsoft games page I always did think Statesman looked out of place next to all those pouting, semi armored fantasy females of Aion, Lineage, even Guild Wars.
Sure they might want to keep it for a rainy day, but if they are intending to refocus their business on the far east markets there doesn't seem much point in them holding onto a property that's proven not to work there. -
Whenever I was browsing the forums there were some names I'd look out for, knowing that their comments would be interesting, insightful and/or funny. Your name was at the top of that list... just above Power.
(ahem, I kid...)
And your asides about having 200+ characters were reassuring to a fellow altoholic such as myself.
All the best. -
The more I think about this theory the less credible it becomes. If NCsoft had been forced to shut down City by PWE they'd have no reason not to shout that fact from the rooftops. It'd make them look good, it'd make PWE look terrible.
Even if all concerned kept quiet about it (can't imagine why NCsoft would but...) it'd come out eventually, at which point a large part of the CoH playerbase would become irevocably hostile to PWE. Some people will be willing to forgive NCsoft if it is just a business decision, but less people would, I think, be willing to forgive PWE for actively conspiring to kill CoH.
Why plot to take down a competitor if by doing so you'd likely alienate a lot of the customers you presumably hoped to win over to your game? -
In the short term I think a lot of attitudes will depend on how their next statement reads - i.e. where they lay out the 'detailed timeline' for the shutdown, how accounts paid past November will be handled, and so on. I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been one already, but it'll make interesting reading when it does come.
In the long term it will all depend on whether they are willing to even discuss giving up the IP.
I just wish we'd get some more solid information about why they decided to do this. I've no doubt it'll come out eventually, but if NCsoft care at all about their PR it's surely in their interest to say something - if only to avoid the most negative rumours and theories spiralling out of control. -
How can you say Citadel is boring when he has that awesome Task Force where you are trapped in a time loop and have to keep attacking the same Council base over and over and over again...
...um... that was the plot, wasn't it? -
Nothing is impossible.
I've came and went from CoH over the last 4 years, but whilst it's not the only MMO for me, I still have a lot of affection for it. The news of the iminent shutdown shocked me more than I would have expected, much more, so I can imagine how devastating this is being for those of the players for whom this is their only MMO.
I'll say this though... I've said some cynical things about the forum community over time, but these last few days I've been impressed at how well it's held together, rather than collapsing into self destructive rage and recriminations. Given the history of forum dramas erupting over what were, in retrospect, minor things, I'm pleasantly surprised.
I still remember arguing with Golden Girl in the GR forums (didn't we all...) but I have nothing but respect for the way that GG and TonyV and the others are responding to this, rallying the community and doing what they can to keep morale high.
Win or lose, I think it's a good thing if the community goes out on a high, being as good as they - we - have often claimed to be. That alone is justification enough for the sincere efforts that are being made, and I wish all those who are actively working toward it the very best of luck. -
Quote:If nothing else, I'm impressed that he a) replied at all, and b) replied so quickly, over a holiday weekend. I've no history, good or bad, with SOE's games, but that's worthy of repect.I see a few responses along the lines of "they wouldn't want to queer the deal by telling the truth" so I wanted to be clear. The reason I don't just paste the email verbatim is that I nrver received explicit permission.
However, the relevant quote would be "Never been discussed never going to be discussed."
That IS verbatim. There was no question of hedging. In fact, I exchanged a few emails wiyh Mister Smedley and he was surprisingly forthcoming about his own experiences having to shut down Matrix Online and EQOA. He also expressed his great respect for both City of Heroes and Paragon Studios.
Bottom line: SOE is not in the picture. At all. -
Quote:I think we'll get some indication of how this is going to play out in the next day or two. That is, when NCsoft indicate to players who've subscribed up to and beyond the end of Nov what they'll be doing with that money. As negative as it is, NCsoft isn't interested in doing anything for us. Period. They yanked the game straight out from under the fanbase. We got ninety days sure, but no dev team to do anything during that time. The kneel has sounded, now its just bleeding out. And if the test realm is any indication, the servers may not even be up for that full ninety days.
Refunds? Let's hope so. 'Credit' for other NCsoft titles? I can imagine how sour that would taste... if it's even legal.
Quote:In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world’s first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks. -
Quote:From what I've read they were willing to sell Auto Assault back to the developer, but asked for more money than Netdevil was willing (or perhaps able) to pay. So there is a hint of precedence for them selling off titles there. As much as I want this to happen.. NCSoft doesn't sell its IPs, it shoots them in the head and dumps them on the side of a desert road, never to be seen again.
I don't know about the others, though I'd guess that the legal shenanigans surrounding Tabula Rasa gave them reason to hold onto that IP.
Given the high risk, high cost and long development time involved in launching new MMOs, especially in the current market, I can easily envisage an established title like CoH being an attractive property to acquire. Sure, it'll never be the WoW-style cash cow that publishers dream of, but it's a solid title, prominent in its own genre, with years and years of content just sitting there, and an exceptionally loyal fanbase. -
Quote:No hard feelings here, FFM, and likewise I retract anything I said in the heat of the moment.Hey guys,
Slight OT here, but I just want to apologise to anyone who was offended in any way by my earlier comments and laying of blame. Seems I'm more upset by this whole thing than I realised, and was hitting out at people that totally didn't deserve it.
So, I'm sorry. I apologise unreservedly for my prior comments and freely admit I was being a jerk.
I think this has hit a lot of us harder than we might have expected it to - certainly the news made me realise how much this game really means to me, leaving me with a lot of regret over the time (and money) I didn't spend on it. I can only imagine how awful it is for those of you for whom CoH has always been the one MMO. -
Quote:Previous page....Nightshade? At what point, in this thread, have I ever mentioned you? And how many times have I actually said that it is NOT the subs that got it canceled?
Quote:Except he IS right. Not entirely, mind you, but if you weren't paying in some way then you weren't supporting the game.
Oh, and it's good to see Forbin is as intransigent as ever. I remember having a big long argument with him about... something... a couple of years ago. Probably soloable TFs. Nice to know some things are still the same - even at the end of things.
-
I should be nice and back out of this thread, but I just had an amusing thought...
Quote:Paladiamors, your join date is Jul 2011. Even if you've been subbed non-stop since that time I've spent more money, overall, on sub fees for this game than you have. So has A_C, I'd imagine. I recall seeing him around the forums quite a lot back in the day.My god, you get more and more full of yourself, and more and more loaded with absolute crap. Do us all a favor and just shut up already.
Be careful with those stones in your glass house, eh?
