Arent'; you reading any of the replies to your questions here? It's already been pointed out that NOT EVERYONE BOTHERS TO CHECK OUT AN ATTACKERS LEVEL.

If i get ASed, I immediately assume i'm going to lose the fight, and coupled with my default attitude of NOT WANTING TO PVP ANYWAY, I leave. If you get the hint and stop attacking me, then i'll stop running and maybe we can agree in /local to go our separate ways. If not, then either I make it to safety and you don't get a kill, or you kill me.

I can't see why it's so hard to understand.

Challenge the hero in an RP way. Whisper behind them. Do stuff in character, they may play along. I they send a response like "I don't PvP" then they aren't into it. The issue, I think, with PvP is this: you say that, and the idea of a min/maxed character who play to win comes to mind. They don't go into character as much as pick fights. You can circumvent this assumption about you by showing that you're just interested in a fight, not pwning them. If a stalker pop up behind me and whispers "Aha, hero, you've fallen into my clutches!" I might play along for the heck of it. If someone simply comes by stabbing me in the back, I have no frame of reference, other than that I'm being stabbed. ....and when a player says something like "Run, noob, like the coward you are!" they're not being fun about it, and I'd have no interest in engaging in a fight with them.

Well said. I wish this would happen. Even once, would be nice.

RPPvP? I just can't see it, sadly.

OK, I know what somebody's going to say to that: I don't pay to play that particular part of the game. So, okay, a fight threatens to break out and you run back to the base, passing the hospital on your way to the helicopter out. What did you just save? If the absolute worst had happened, if I were secretly on a level 50 fully kitted out with PvP and purple IOs and backed up by a covert strike squad of 25 other hidden stalkers, what can we do to you? Send you to the Longbow base you were already fleeing to, only faster. Taking the slower, scenic route to the helicopter out is that preferable to you? Why?
This is an interesting point. If I'm attacked and my mindset is 'I'm going to be killed, so i'll leave', why not just stand there (or rest, to speed things up) and turn my toggles off and then get a 'free tp' to the longbow base, rather than the slower route of going there myself? I can think of one reason. Perhaps the person leaving feels a bit annoyed at the PvPer who's initiated this situation, and so wants to deprive him of the satisfaction of a kill?

Many, many people just *don't like PvP*. They've had bad experiences with it, had bad experiences with PvPers, or just flat out aren't interested. Since they don't PvP, they don't build their characters for it, don't know the strategies and tactics involved in playing in PvP, and have effectively no PvP experience. For many, the sum total of PvP experience they have is of getting ganked repeatedly the one time they stepped foot into a zone.

They don't know that you're 10 levels lower than them (if they target you, all they'll see is the 25 the zone exemps/SKs you to - many people don't know about using /whoall to find actual levels). They don't know that you're not a 'hardcore PvPer' who's going to chase them around the zone and kill them until they get frustrated and log off. They don't know that it's a fight they practically can't lose (and I'm not exactly sure it would be, either). All they know is that a villain just popped out next to them (or appeared on their screen, either way), and in their experience that is usually followed by dying, over and over. Running away is a quite sensible action, from their perspective.

They're not thinking 'ok, I'll fight this guy, even if I lose, I'll be out only a minute or two'. They're thinking 'oh crap, the PvPers are here, I'm about to die over and over for the next hour or so'. Remember, they have no way of knowing your level, what you're slotted with, your PvP experience or skills, or how many of you are out there. By far the most common thing to happen in that case is that said villain will be a PvPer who will kill them over and over again until they leave - in their experience, anyway. From that perspective, they don't think they have any chance of winning, they don't think they have any chance of accomplishing what they came to do while you're there, and so they might as well go do something else until you leave.
This describes perfectly my thoughts and feelings whenever I'm attacked in a pvP zone whilst i'm getting Shivans or temp nukes or badging. Even on my 50, i don't bother to analyze my attacker to see if I've got a cvhance, because i don't want to PvP. If someone came up to me in a bar and asked my to play tic-tac-toe, and I could have the first move, I'd decline as well, even though it'd be a certain win or draw. I'm not interested.

  6. Hi folks.

I've had some PMs wondering where I've got to. Thanks for the kind enquiries

I felt as though I was perhaps approaching a burnout of CoH, plus RL stuff has been contributing to a feeling of lethargy, so i decided to take a break from the game for a while. I haven't cancelled my sub (NEVER!), and I've been popping in just to check my CH stuff infrequently, but I won't be back serously till next year. I'll be spending New Year on the beach on Monkey Island, Thailand, and I tell you, i could really do with the break lol.

Have a great Xmas, all, and a happy new year!

  8. I would pay for an iPhone app that allowed me to access the AH/BM, and I'd also pay for another iPhone app thatlet me create characters up to 'enter the tutorial'? point.

I'd also pay for CoH on the iphone too, but that's stretching it a bit i think lol.

Compared to CoH, WoW IS a tortuous grindfest.

I tried AION recently and was utterly depressed. If this is the latest thing in the world of MMORPGs, then Life itself is Retarded. CoH is from the future, obviously, a future where Fun and Plot are important.

FFS, NCSoft, advertise CoH, why don't you!

Well I think that whoever tagged my MA review thread 'hugfest' was being sarky, not well-meaning. As it happens, i actually like the tag very much lol, but I'm not sure how Venture, for example, feels about some of the tags on his review threads. The tag system can be used to poke fun at the thread starters in some cases.

  12. ALso, comic book characters don't age normally, do they? I haven't read a Spidey comic for about 20 years, but he'd been a teenager for well over a decade when i started reading him, and he was in his ealry twenties at the latest when i stopped, I'm pretty sure.

Anyone still keep up? How old is Spidey now?

  16. I think it gets even more morally interesting if we say that the child is the hero's son. Heroes would readily off themselves if it was 'you or them', but 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' gets weighted differently under different circumstances.

I'm partly in agreement with you in that since there's almost always going to be a greater good, the other option might be justifiable. Or that might just be a cop-out.

It's just hard for me to think of anything which will fulfill those criteria.
It depends on wether you subscribe to 'the ends justify the means'. If for example a supervillain wired up a bomb to explode in Room X, which contains 100 randomly selected citizens, and said bombs only deactivation switch is controlled by Minion A, who is in Room Y somewhere unknown, and watching the Hero on CCTV. The hero is in Room Z with a 5-year old child. Minion A has an interesting history. He has been told that the 5-yr old is an automaton, and has been presented with 30 prior setups like this and been able to examine tge automatons to reassure him that no real child is harmed. He has been told this is an experiment designed to test some criminal reform program. The important point is that he doesn't think he's committing anything immoral. He is told to push button A if the hero kills the child before a certain time Or the and button b if the hero doesnt or if the cctv feed stops for any reason. He thinks the buttons just record the outcome.
Button a in fact deactivates the bomb. Button b sets it off.

The hero knows everything i've just explained, apart from the location of room x or room y.

He has 30 seconds left on the timer.

    What does he do?

In order for your joke misunderstanding to work perfectly, wouldn't i have had to say 'Best-Named Custom Critter'? :P

I'd like to reiterate btw that I was not referring to a custom group but to specifically named custom critters. If someone suggests we have a category for Best Custom Group as well, I'm fine with that.

Hm, I wonder if Destiny from my arc The Audition would fit to both categories? Since shes's a hive mind, her entire group is one entity

  22. Well done everyone, and well done Bubba.

I'd like authors to automatically vote for tgeir own and be given one other vote in the category they're in.

I'd also like a new category added next year-Best Named Custom Critter. I dont mean custom group, i think our awards should have a Best Actor/Actress equivalent.

    Another MMO?

This is a question, so I guess it should go here, but it's not really a question about CoH as such.

I'm never going to stop playign CoH, but recently I've had a hankering to add another MMO to those I play (er, at present just CoH/V lol). I'm not at all looking for a replacement for CoH; my monetary situation has improved a lot recently, and what with being single and having a slight alteration to my work schedule, I think Ive got time for two.

I fancy something a bit fantasy-ish, I think. I've tried WoW and WAR and AION, and they all blow massive chunks IMO. They're slow, grindy, punitive to casual players and the playerbase seems to be largely comprised of kids.

What I'm after, I think, is something like CoH but with orcs lol.

Can anyone recomend another MMO to play that isn't a horrible grindfest, doesn't rely predominantly on outdoor killquests, and that has travel powers or mounts that make travel as fast and simple as it is in CoH?

I don't care for PvP either.
