Quote:You can add it to the disclaimer I put in my post (that you didn't keep in your quote):If that is your excuse I'm going to assume this is a blanket disclaimer.

Quote:That was kind of my point.Nope. We had email spammers who would get you just from seeing your character.
If you can receive /local spam, then there is a good chance that your character can be seen. And that would open you to the /tell spam, just as much as the /local.
And I do not think anyone is talking emails. I thought this was about /tell being overly restrictive, not anything else. Emails are currently pretty locked down. Can't do it before 10th level, can't do more than one per 15 seconds...
My opinion still stands though. If /tell was restricted from free accounts solely to prevent RMTers (as in absolutely no other reason) then it isn't all that effective. There are still other ways around it. Pay wall doesn't even stop it directly, as there are some RMTers that advertise in other games that only have paid accounts. (Granted, that game probably does have more exposure than CoH.) -
Quote:Except I wasn't posting it as fact.Seriously: That law doesn't say what you think it says. By no possible interpretation does it say what you think it says. It is quite narrow in its scope.
I was pointing out that common sense and laws do not have to intersect, ever.
That all it takes is one forum viewer, with the right set of circumstances, to force NCSoft to make a ruling on things "that are outright silly," and that "were allowed in the past."
And that the belief that "small infractions will be overlooked" can end up being very naive.
Hell, considering Arcanaville has a reputation (deserved or not) of quoting posters to make them look foolish, opens the possibility of cyber bullying since she quoted me twice in this thread. (No, I won't be pressing charges.)
Just because "it would be silly," or "has been allowed before," isn't a refuge for people to ignore what the rules can be used for.
Nor is it unreasonable for posters to be concerned, and ask for more clear guidelines. -
I've installed these and they passed a "quick test," of lasting over an hour.
I did realize about 20 minutes in that I still had Vertical Sync turned off from a suggestion Tex made in another thread, so that might have something to do with it.
I'll have to give these drivers a full (about 2 hours or more) test with Vertical Sync turned on later to really try them out. -
Quote:(I'm ignoring you grossly exaggerated analogy.)That's much like saying that car accidents will happen either way is a valid reason to make brake pads optional. Spamming local has a limited range and is generally constrained to more active points, such as auction houses. Spamming tells... well. Nowhere is safe. We've been there and learned the hard way.
If you were looking for safety from /tells (now, at least. I'm not familiar with "the old days") you could /hide from searches. That would protect you from just about everything that you couldn't get from /local spam.
Whatever it was like, now players have a good set of tools to protect themselves from what they do not want.
Quote:If you want a feeling for the old days, put your global up and ask us to randomly pelt you with emails and messages for a week. I can even go to a character I haven't played since spring 2010 and send you authentic spam!
Quote:^This. It costs a fiver to unlock for ever more, which is an effective barrier against RMTer without being too extortionate for new players.
So I do not think it is as useful as you believe. -
I admit that it isn't as clear cut as, say, posters suggesting that player make a fake Facebook account (which, among other things, is even against Facebooks' Terms of Use) - which was allowed - to get in on a giveaway.
So hate all you want... Unless that is considered a personal attack, or trolling against me... Then you can't do that. -
Quote:Fair enough. That's because by the time you joined the devs had already taken steps to stop the spam /tells. Way back when it was happening a lot.
But there are still RMT /local spams.
It happens either way, and it is just as easy to report a person for spamming each way. -
If that is true, that would explain why some people get crap speeds with the new launcher.
See, bit torrent technology is evil, evil, kill a puppy with a wood chipper evil, according to some ISPs. Thanks to the wide brush the recording and mocie industries have painted with it.
So, some ISPs throttle bit torrent technology out of hand "just to be sure." -
Quote:This tells me that you haven't read through the entire thread in the i21 Beta forums about feedback on the market prices. (Not that I blame you, it is quite long.)And these transactions are the staple of the very nature of the beast you are railing against. I haven't seen anyone complain about the actual cost values of the Rocket Board, the CoT costume pack, not even the Going Rogue or Alignment portions of the game.
Not one.
There have been several who have complained about the prices of the Rocket Board.
And there have been quite a few who complained about costume packs in general, and several who complained about the CoT costume pack.
I admit I have only seen a couple who have complained about the Going Rogue or Alignment portions (and, admittedly, I am one of them).
But if you haven't seen anyone complain about any of the prices, then you haven't been looking hard enough on these forums. (Again, not that I blame you. It isn't worthwhile to do so.) -
Quote:And that is where the rules start to break down. One (wo)mans humor is twelve (wo)mens trolling. And thanks to the internet being nothing but bits, there really is no proving that a smiley at the end of an insult is to indicate true humor, or to get away with maliciousness. There's got to be a reasonable amount of give and take... Otherwise, this place would be a lot less fun.
And with human nature as it is, people (in this case moderators) will always be more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to people they know (in this case forum regulars) as opposed to strangers.
So, at least with other forums I have been a part of, you get the rather wide disparity of "forum regular A" saying one thing, and "forum n00b B" getting reprimanded for saying virtually the same thing.
And that causes more trouble than it helps.
If, rules are going to be enforced at all, it has to be across the board for everyone. Even those you (the moderator) know "are just joking."
To do otherwise promotes elitism and resentment.
Quote:So, also don't worry that the rule states such and such won't be tolerated. I don't think they're going to be moderating me for posting an RP story about my villain stealing a car...
Using anything but your real name on the internet is illegal in the US thanks to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Damn near all of us (including Paragon staff) are committing potential felonies for using false identities. (Note: I'm not claiming this is a fair or reasonable law - or even ruling on said law, just pointing it out there. All it takes is one bored/desperate enough prosecutor to get it tried.)
So where can Paragon forum authorities draw the line?
"Poster A's" story is okay because we do not know if s/he lives outside of "state Z," but since we know "poster B" does live in "state Z," that one has to be removed?
Human nature being what it is...
If these rules are not leveled evenly across all users, it will not end well. (I've seen multi thousand user forums cut under half population due to "uneven" rulings getting people to quit.) -
Quote:I do not think this will work as well as intended...If they have to pay $5, it'll make it much more costly to spam. And, hell, if they decide to do it, at least Paragon will get some free money to make more stuff from all the accounts they get banned.
EDITed to remove:: I've never received a /tell RMT request/offer /EDITed to remove:: I have received one /tell RMT request/offer, and any time I am flooded with RMT spam it is always /local. (Little over a year game time.)
Which Free players start with access too...
If this was the only reason free players had /tells crippled, that is about as useful as using padlocks to keep out criminals. -
Quote:Ah. Thank you.edit: OHO! So apparently this got skipped in my RSS feed:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=271616
I was afraid this was my first sign that my memory was failing me. -
I am not looking to get them closed, I just remember reading the announcement and now I can't even find the announcement.
Can someone verify?
Or did I just make that up in my head. -
Quote:Speaking for myself, if there was a way to submit hardware/software specs WITHOUT having to sign up for another useless forum account, I'd do it in a heartbeat.Nobody's ASKING you to take another full time job as a hardware/software tester. There's merely an implicit request for the provision of system specifics so that a proper troubleshooting job may be done.
As it is... I'll leave it up to AMD/Paragon to work it out with my info posted here. -
Is this an effect of the Windfall reward? (I am no where near receiving one, so I am not at all sure.)

Quote:You should still be able to make a Praetorian. It is just not intuitive how at first.4) I have the Going Rogue on my accounts. However, when I create a new character, I don't have the option of starting in Praetoria. I can go to Galaxy City, or to Atlas Park, or Mercy Island.
On the Character Creation screen, where you can select your Origin, there are two banner looking graphic in the upper left corner. The top one says something about "Galaxy City," and the one beneath is "Going Rogue."
Those are actually buttons to select which location to start in.
Oddly, it is more clear if you are a Free or Premium account without Going rogue/Praetoria access because there is a big lock symbol over the Going Rogue button. -
Add me to the list of people wondering what the current status of points/tokens is and should be.
My billing date is on the 22nd, and have not received either a token or points yet.
However, I did start the Head Start with 400 more points and one more Token than I was expecting. So I am not crying foul. Just looking for clarification. -
If you check from a Free/Premium account (i checked from an old trial account that is now free), you will see that you get those those inventory increases as well.
Or, at least you are shown as supposed to get them.
The very window you screenshoted changes your circled area to "Free players receive" and adds in the chat unlocks and such that free players get. And for clarity, this is on top of the same inventory increases. -
Simple answer: Let them say their piece, and leave it at that.
Longer answer: See next quote.
Quote:So if everyone disagrees with them on this subject, they're likely to stick to their guns. Ok.
Course, if nobody disagrees with them on this subject, there's nothing prompting them to reconsider their position either.
What does that help?
Player X hates, absolutely hates, what Company Y has done. Player X rants up a storm on Company Y's site.
Now, if that article is accurate - and I am inclined to agree with it - if all of the forumites "fight back" against Player X they only make Player X's opinions worse and more ingrained.
Now, not only is Player X spreading bad opinion about Company Y's actions whenever it seems appropriate (and that can be any time any one else is in hearing distance from some people I have known), but they are also adding in Company Y's fanbois to the list.
That can hurt Company Y. (Then again, depending on Player X, people may just ignore him/her).
On the other hand, if everyone let's them be, at worst Player X only has Company Y's action to hate. And is more inclined to just let the situation pass. Maybe even rethink their own opinions when the hatred subsides. -
Just for those that thing the topic of this thread should be squashed so hard,
I present this Wired Science article.
So line up and keep swinging squashers. You are helping your cause so much when you do. Grind that ax. -
Quote:Oh yeah. Re reading your OP, I see you did say that.I hate to say it
I already was advised by support to try a fresh install on a extra hd and since I didn't have one I backed everything up and did a fresh install hoping it would fix any errors in windows.
Your CoH Helper report doesn't list what your motherboard is, so can you fill that detail in?
(Thinking out loud:
Not the PSU
Not the OS
Not likely the GPUs)
You have tried running each video card individually? Or just one? (If one of them failed, you might have tried the one that was bad.)
(Returns to thinking outloud:
Not overheating
Not the drivers)
Is it your monitor? Is it that your whole system "locks" with this black screen? Or is it just CoH?
(Returns to thinking out loud:
Maybe memory
Maybe MoBo
Maybe CPU...)
Last thing I can think of is your house wiring supplying enough juice? Extreme longshot, but if you PSU can't get enough power, it can't provide power... Before your system locks, do the lights dim? Other devices plugged into your outlets stutter or dim? Does an in-window AC kick on just before the system locks? Anything else I might not be thinking of right now?
And for tonight, I am tapped out... Like I said last post, give me a day to think on it. -
Quote:Well, off the cuff I would say "Customer Unlocked Costume Part..."I haven't bothered trying to figure out what the cucp represents, as far as I'm concerned it's a meaningless prefix.
But that is without any effort and that is all the effort I am going to put into it. ;-)
