NCsoft Launcher rules!

I don't know what happened, but I'm getting ~180K/s download for the latest patch, around the max my 1.5Mb/s connection can give. That's compared to 30K/s previously and 300 bytes/s on the old CoH Updater.

While the NCsoft Launcher still hangs all too often, this certainly makes up for it.

I usually get about 5meg a second.

The NCsoft launcher uses bittorrent technology. You are not only downloading from the ncsoft site but downloading from and uploading to potentially every other player who currently has the launcher open. So for comparison

Old updater+new patch release = (let's call it) 5000 players concurrently downloading from 2 servers.

New updater+new patch release = (let's stay consistent) 5000 players downloading from 2 servers + 5000 other players. No I didn't make a mistake in the math. The 5000th player being downloaded from is the single player out there who actually leaves the launcher running while playing the game.

So now downloading during the busiest download times can actually result in higher speeds than downloading during off hours.

Just out of curiosity, where did you get this information?

Also on Steam

If that is true, that would explain why some people get crap speeds with the new launcher.

See, bit torrent technology is evil, evil, kill a puppy with a wood chipper evil, according to some ISPs. Thanks to the wide brush the recording and mocie industries have painted with it.

So, some ISPs throttle bit torrent technology out of hand "just to be sure."

It works very well in China, even though I can't download or stream much of anything else.

Like most other big content providers, they're probably contracting out to a Content Delivery Network. CDNs specialize in providing downloads with regional hubs and cached content that helps everyone get the best transfer speeds possible. One of the biggest CDNs is Akamai.

Companies work with CDNs to assure they can handle demand spikes on big releases without breaking the internet. Steam, EA, they all do it.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

I'm stuck at 90%, can more people seed the patch? kthxbai. </s>

And yes, yes it does. I leave it up on my work computer all the time so I never have to patch it when wanting to play.
