Quote:This is the likely culprit. Not an AMD user myself, but I think they have had some issues with their drivers of late. Did you try an older driver version?
ATI drivers higher than 11.4 (you have 11.7, it seems), and sometimes lower versions, aren't playing nice with CoH.
Also, there appears to be an issue with 64 bit Windows, or at least it makes the problem worse.
The best suggestion currently, is to try rolling back your drivers.
On the other hand, if you want to try the preview driver that Paragon and AMD worked on you can find out about it here. -
Having read that turning of Vertical Sync (as in this thread) can solve crashing issues, I once again purged my 11.4 drivers (uninstall + Driver Sweeper + CCleaner to get the couple of registry entries left over) and tried the Preview driver again with Vertical Sync disabled in game.
No good. Client hard locked in 46 minutes. (I broke out a stop watch to give the trial a fair shake, expecting it to solve the issue.)
As expected, disabling VSync increased my framerate, but it still varied wildly. 22-100 in Ouro, 22-75 in Cap, 75-130 in indoor instance missions.
I hope that helps narrow things down...
I'm going to purge the preview drivers and go back to the non-crashing, non-eyestrain/headache inducing (only the preview driver hurts me with the fuzzy edges), 11.4 drivers. -
Quote:The atioglxx.dll information should be as follows:
File version: 6.14.10.11019
Since the driver is not signed you should get a dialog during the installation process asking if you want to install the driver.
Digital Signer: Not digitally signed
You can also check your overall driver date and version in device manager. It should be:8.880.8.0
8/29/2011
Verified on all counts.
Sorry, but my report stands. -
Quote:This driver doesn't work any better than the 11.8 driver for me.Anyone trying out this driver please let us know about your results.
Thank you,

Still get the semi regular client freeze at around the 2 hour mark of play - give or take half an hour.
For reference: ATI Radeon HD 5750, 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate.
And, if that wasn't enough, it performs a little worse in general for me. Textures and edges in game are really fuzzy, and frame rate gets cut in half when moving in an outdoor map (regular zone). Normally just under 60 fps, drops to 22-30 fps when moving. I mark this up to being a rough preview though, and would have put up with it if the crashing stopped. -

If I had to guess, and I am just guessing here, based on little to no facts and by gut reaction alone...
I would say it is an issue with CoH and 64 bit Windows.
ATI users can hammer out the bugs, and a game patch can (and has) messed things up again.
But the reality is, without a significant money investment - not to mention time - there is no realistic way to narrow down just where the problem lies.
I'm not about to purchase a 32 bit Windows license just run tests on the same machine running both to verify performance differences. And I certainly do not expect any other player to do the same. -
Quote:Hmmm... 64 bit Windows 7 (might not actually be influencing things), ATI card, and I see from your CoHHelper output that it looks like the 11.4 drivers. My current machine is an AMD Phenom II 955 x4, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 64 bit Windows 7, and am ATI Radeon HD6970 (Sapphire). Norton 360 keeps my drives defragged (before, I'd do it myself). I'm not running anything else against the game that would soak up the remaining resources.
You seem to have fallen into "the triangle."
In short, CoH and Catalyst drivers do not play very well together right now. (Current theories - mostly just mine - suspect 64 bit Windows plays a part in that.)
You could try updating your drivers, but that isn't likely to work well.
Best suggestion is to unload your current drivers completely (might need Driver Sweeper) and trying an earlier version of the drivers, like 11.3 or 11.2.
In the end, it really is a crap shoot, and testing which drivers work best for you. -
I bet I am a little weird on this, but I never find Masterminds relaxing. They border on "sensory overload" for me. [Keep an eye on my HPs and End, as well as all pets. Constantly calculating if it would be better to wait to re-summon lost tier 1 pets, or cut losses and re-summon them all, or just re-summon the lost ones now. Etc..]
For me, the most relaxing character I have (and I do not have a lot) is a Claws/Willpower Brute. With Tough and Weave from Fighting pool, combined with inherent Fitness, all I have to do is make sure my toggles are up (I have screwed this up before) and click on the attack that has recharged.
Unless I get overwelmed with numbers, or am facing a particularly tough Elite Boss or Archvillain, I never have to keep an eye on my stat bars.
It really is something of a "monkey pushes the button" character. The only somewhat irritating part of it is if you are facing enemies with flight and range (like Longbow with their Eagles). You might have to switch targets often as Eagles fly in, and then fly out. -
Gotta enjoy the "random giveaways."
"Enter to win a 'gaming computer!'"
"What? You can play minesweeper on a netbook... Minesweeper is a game, isn't it?"
Oh well. It is free either way. I would rather know what the prizes entail though, rather than a list of sponsors, especially when one model of case they are displaying on the contest page is discontinued on Newegg already. (The P183)
At least the Sonata series tends to be very quiet, if a little hot. The DF-85 looks to be a beast of a fan case though. 7 fans, plus one optional, none of them smaller than 120mms.
Now if only Antec was the power supply company they used to be. -
Oh, I am certain of that.
I was certain of that before this thread was started.
But thanks to this thread, we now know that there are several/a few longstanding (years long) bugs that have been deemed unfixable. Not because the technology doesn't exist. Not because the current team doesn't know how. But because fixing them would involve other parts of the game. Either in breaking them and/or rewriting them. And the team will not have the man-hours to do it.
(Not related to this thread)
There are reoccurring bugs that get fixed from time to time that come back.
That two geometrically identical zones (Ouroboros) can not be merged because it would require rewriting other systems of the game (I am thinking contact content, and zoning).
All of this doesn't paint a picture of a solid game with occasional strips of duct tape holding it together, but instead an amalgamation of different disparate parts (worthy of a skit on the Red Green Show) held together with chewing gum and twine.
All the while we are getting promos for Freedom with all it's new shinies and new mechanics getting bolted on to this monstrosity of underlying code. It is easy to imagine Freedom is an episode of Home Improvement with the part of Tim Taylor being played by Paragon Studios. -
Quote:At the Bay Area Meet & Greet last year, they were introducing some of the new staff. One of those was on the World team. They told us a brief story about shortly after he was hired. It went something like this:
After being hired he brought up several longstanding issues that still hadn't been resolved. He was told to go through the Bug list, find something he wanted to work on fixing and then come back to them when he had a plan. He selected an even older problem than the one you are talking about and went about trying to find a way to fix it. He came back to them very perplexed because he couldn't find any way to fix the issue without causing major problems in several other more important areas of the game. It had long been determined by the Dev team that this was a problem they'd not be able to fix without a major rewrite to multiple systems, and since it was a relatively minor problem in the big picture, it would just have to stay as it is.
So, what you are saying is that the basic underlying code for CoH is so utterly frakked up that it is unreasonable to expect basic maintenance bug fixes?
That doesn't instill a lot of confidence for the major changes and additions of Freedom... -
Quote:Goliath Bird Eater reported using 32 bit Windows.Well, i'd uninstalled 11.7 and used Driver Sweeper before installing 11.8, but i'm also running the 64 bit version of Windows 7. Are you using 32 or 64 bit?
That, combined with your report, and my experience (after a day or two running 11.8, it starting locking up the client again [I'm running 64 bit Windows 7]) helps support my musings.
Which stinks. If it is an issue with 64 bit Windows (or at lest made worse by 63 bit Windows) it may take forever to track it down. :-( -
Quote:For your questions, waiting for i21 or not will not affect you either way.★my question is, would it be best for me to pay the 1.99$ for the CoH and its benefits, or Wait until i21's release, and individually buy ability to use Masterminds, and to enroll as an incarnate?
thanks if you answer. c:
What you are really asking is the difference between maintaining a subscription or not.
As Justice Blues stated, all Incarnate level stuff is VIP (subscription) only.
Unless your new account gets 13 Paragon Reward tokens, you will need to purchase the use of Masterminds if you aren't subscribing if you wait or buy CoH now.
And there is more that will change depending on if you are actively subscribing or not on a new account. -
I'm starting to wonder if there is an issue with 64 bit Windows. A lot of the reports of problems are from people on 7 x64, or Vista x64.
Of course, this could be a false positive since 64 bit is the way of the future...
And then there is the difficulty of tracking down is it a driver + x64 problem, or a CoH + x64 problem... Or something else entirely.
Eh... Just mulling out loud.

For the little that I am sure it is worth, 11.8 has worked great for me in the Beta.
-
For a heads up to people, my Catalyst 11.7s were crashing my Beta client. I wouldn't say frequently, but it was regular. After about 1.5 to 2.5 hours of play, it (the client) would hard lock.
So far, the 11.8s have been working great in the Beta. -

Really? Four days later, and you are trying to stir up PANCAKEPANCAKEPANCAKEPANCAKE again?
Did that make you feel important? Did you sleep better that night after posting this? -
Quote:I do not use Steam. So what I am about to say is pure speculation.Ok so how the hell do I play the game via steam if I bought the game via steam as they have not updated the links/game/platform to use the NClauncher so I now have to have to shortcuts to the game via my steam client to play
From what I have read (specifically this post) it seams there were two versions of CoH on Steam, and one was removed (Architect Edition) and the other was updated (Going Rogue Edition).
So, I would guess - and it is just that, a guess - if you didn't have the Going Rogue Edition, your game wasn't updated properly.
Now, still speculating here, since the game you purchase is really only important on the NCSoft Master Account page, and it appears the Steam doesn't really care what version of the game you are running, I would think you could download a new copy from the CoH page, and point steam to it like in the post that Kazz linked to. -
I logged in to post something like this.
I had some hiccups installing them, but I am certain that was specific to my system.
After I installed them and jumped in the game I had zero problems. My inactive contact list (which is famous for showing driver problems) has never looked better.
I haven't run any iTrials yet to give them a good workout. -
Well.
With that, my knowledge on the issue is spent. Sorry Bohmfalk. I'd say give the suggestion from Mandu a try. Or, follow through with your plan to contact G.Skill.
I can tell you, that I have read reports (not sure how accurate) that faulty memory can fail when paired, and work fine when single. For what that is worth. -
Why do I get the feeling that someone on the internet is trying to prove me wrong, when I haven't expressed my personal belief on a matter?
Oh well. You know what? You win.
You are right.
I'm wrong.
There. You should sleep like a baby tonight.
For those who may be interested in what is actually being discussed:
You know what? The iPhone is a good example.
I never bought an iPhone, so I am not sure how the things were handle at point of sale. But I am certain that every single mention of the iPhone included the mention of "being locked in," or requiring a contract with AT&T to use. If memory serves, it was a two year contract, but that ultimately doesn't matter here.
I'm willing to give Apple and Apple employees the benefit of the doubt, and say they probably made that requirement quite clear at purchase. But I might be giving them too much credit. I don't know.
To the point: If during that initial contract period, Apple said "We changed our minds. We no longer require you to have an AT&T contract." There would be some customers, if memory serves a lot of customers because no one seemed to like AT&Ts service, that would jump on the chance to change carriers.
Now if Apple said "sure, you can change carriers. But you have to pay us for that phone first." There would be consumer backlash over it. This isn't saying that it would be right. Or that Apple should not have charged for the phone. But customers would revert to their programmed belief that purchase = ownership. And that they believed they bought the phone free and clear, and just took the tacked on contract along with it.
They would feel insulted ("slapped in the face") for having to pay for the phone twice.
I bet some of you are saying "CoH does the same thing! The package states you REQUIRE a subscription!:"
Hold on. CoH:Freedom changes that though. The easiest way to interpret (from a common consumer perspective) what Paragon is saying is "we no longer require you to have a subscription to play." I realize this isn't 100% accurate. I'm not talking about the accuracy of the interpretation.
Positrons' quote of "you keep what you purchase" plays to that nicely. I am NOT saying it was intentionally misleading. Just pointing out that it plays to the programmed belief that purchase = ownership.
So there will be some customers that will fall back to their programmed belief that purchase = ownership, and come into Freedom believing they have everything they bought.
They will be insulted ("slapped in the face") for having to "pay twice for content they already bought" when having to pay (even if it is in Paragon Points they were given before Freedom launched) for access to some ATs, and even some Powersets, that they believe they already bought.
We have even seen this crop up on the forums a few times already.
It won't go away until a month (or more) after Freedom launches.
And how people handle these customers (if they are as numerous as I predict) that feel insulted will determine how Freedom is received. And it could be a big "shot in the foot" to the game.
Or not. Maybe I am wrong about the number of people that feel that way about the game. -
Oh my... The "Catalyst 11.6 problem." ;-P
This has been popping up for a long time. And there are several threads about this.
In short, 11.6 and CoH do not play nice together. We hope that 11.7 will fix this, but in the meantime the only thing you can do is to rollback your driver version until you find one that works.
And then, different drivers work for different people. So it may take several trial and error attempts. 11.5, 11.3, and 11.2 seem to be the most widely successful versions. -
The issue is know, and being worked on. But there is a work around.
