Perfect example, TA. I visit a lot of forums and I have a love/hate relationship with sig graphics. It's nice that people get to show off, but some people don't seem to have any sense about it. I've been to forums where there's a string of 10 posts, many with fewer than two sentences, but I have to scroll forever because their images are huge. If your signature is so big it's the only thing people remember, your message is likely getting lost. If the majority of your messages aren't as important as your signature, don't subject me to either.

I also have no love for posts with loads of space for no reason. Spoiler warnings are ok, but if you're just doing it to be cute, then you should get your *** over here and scroll my page for me and stop pissing me off.

It worked for me, but I've found that it's really wonky if I let it do it on its own. I've taken to manually telling it to mark things as unread, which is the only way I've been able to make it work consistently for me.

There are two ways you can manually mark things as read. If you only want to mark Justice, then you can go to the Servers page and double click the star on the left of the Justice section. That will dim out the star, marking the Justice forum as read. If you read more than the Justice section, you can mark multiple stars or you can mark everything in the forums by going to Quick Links --> Mark Forums Read. It will still go to the very first page of a thread much of the time, but when I click the Viewe First Unread link it goes straight to the ones I haven't read yet.

I think it's going to be really difficult to know because of this kind of thing. It's very possible are you know quite a few people who know additional languages or, especially if you don't use a voice chat system, even play with people who are non-native English speakers, but you aren't aware of it because they use English when they're playing with English speakers. (When in Rome... only different.)

Sometimes you can tell when someone is using English as a second language, but sometimes you can't. I always forget that Samuel Tow isn't a native English speaker. His English is better than many people I know who don't speak anything else. Many times Sam's English is better than my own.

Seconded. You enter the info so they can bill you when your first month ends, but they won't charge you until your first 30 days are over. If you decide you don't like the game, you can log into your account and deactivate it before the billing date comes due and you won't get charged at all. (Provided you didn't try to time it down to the hour. I'd give at least 24 hours to be safe.)

Note: I thought it was silly to pay a monthly fee and figured I'd cancel my subscription after my first 30 days. That was 5 years ago.

Welcome to the game. There's lots of good advice here already, especially about the many global channels to join.

Defenders are great fun to play, but in the very low levels, they don't solo quickly. (Some never solo quickly) You may want to start a new character in addition to your Defender, one that solos more easily. (Scrappers are great for this, especially Regen and WillPower in the lower levels). That will give you some more options in terms of being able to level more quickly when you're on your own versus playing on a team.

On your team bar, there's a place to add some search comments and change your status. Make sure you have it set to show that you're looking for a team and add a brief description or comment in the comments field. I usually add my powersets so that when people see a list of Defenders/Controllers/whatevers online, they can quickly see what kinds of powers I have without having to ask me or invite me to find out.

Here on the forums, you may want to include some additional information about yourself, such as what time zone you're in, what times you're usually on, and your global chat handle or character name so that people here can find you online. If you're not sure what your global name is, check the chat window when you first log in. You may need to scroll around a bit, but it should tell you the global name you're logged in under.

To send a global tell to someone, you need to include the "@" symbol before the person's global name. That will send a message to the player no matter what character or server he or she is on or save the message for the person to get upon the next login. It's a great system and allows you to better keep in touch with friends once you do make them.

I don't know if I'll be online tonight, but my global name is @MissInformed. You can send me a message and I'll reply if I am.

  9. 1) You coming?
    --Yes
1a) If yes, banquet menu ok?
    --Yes
1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal?
--I'd feel more comfortable knowing the cost per person before deciding. I know your own generosity seemingly knows no bounds, but I also know that for some people, the ability to take advantage of such generosity knows no limits. I'd like the cost to be within reason for everyone, even if some people need help covering. Some people don't like to let anyone else cover their costs, especially if they think something is expensive. Keeping the cost per person down would help people feel more comfortable with allowing someone else to cover them if they need it.

1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead?
    --N/A
1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it?
--Nope, but I don't like the idea of one or several people getting shafted by people with no feeling of any accountability.
1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer?
    --Nope.
1d) If no, what the heck is wrong with you?
    --Ha!
    2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)?
--No, but I will totally chip in for an Apple Gorgonzola salad with Arwen if we can't get it added!
(I figure we might have some leeway in this regard as omissions cost the same as some included items.)
    3) Preferred dining date/time? My planned default is Friday Oct 23, 5:30pm which will hopefully allow us to dine without rushing to get to whatever Niv might be putting together on Friday
    --Sounds good to me.

What can I do to help?
  10. I think if you're really looking at three years to complete the series and it's based on CoH graphics, you may run into trouble. Three years from now the game may not be around or may have a completely different look to it if they release a CoH2. (Regular comics get new artists doing old characters though, yeah? It shouldn't be unacceptable to people.)

If you want to do this only for you, take as long as you need. If you want to get actual readers who follow along, I think you'll need to speed things up, especially if the story line gets complex. There's a reason comics and TV serials have specific timeframes and deadlines for completion: when they stretch things out, they lose the audience. People can't remember details of things that are too spread out and may have to go back and re-read, which they may get tired of or not have enough time for. Lost and Battle Star Gallactica both lost viewers when plots got very complex and the shows had too much time between episodes. Comics are going to be a little easier because people will be able to access old issues and re-read them more quickly, but you should still expect a loss.

Of course, some authors are able to carry long delays off. J.K. Rowling sometimes had very long gaps between Harry Potter books and it didn't seem to hurt her. Stephen King took what seemed like forever to finish the Dark Tower series. But authors like Rowling and King are pretty unique with super devoted followers.

In the other thread, someone suggested getting the works out, then spending time later to refine them. This is done all the time by director's and people who do "anniversay additions," etc. (Heck, I feel like BladeRunner had half a dozen director's cut/final cut versions, though I think it was more like 3.) People were outraged, but I think we all know about George Lucas' rework of the original Star Wars films.

Consider something else all creators have to think about when trying to decide between speed versus quality: is this something everyone will notice or only you will really know about? I think all creators have to sacrifice quality in some regards for various reasons: time, money, technology, ability (self or others), unexpected setbacks, etc. I don't think anyone who works in a creative field ever really feels anything is ever truly finished. I've talked about this with lots of people who have to create things and we all tend to agree about that. ("All" being the people I talked to. I'm not going to presume to speak for every person involved in creative endeavors.) Even if we think something is brilliant and we couldn't possible have done it better, the moment after we delcare it finished, we think of 10 things we want to change or should have done differently, even for works that are highly praised by others. Here's another trait I've come across in people who work in creative fields: There is nothing I've done that I don't think I could go back and improve, but it's simply not possible. Nothing new would get done and I'd spend all my time forever "improving" my old works. And as we've seen from Lucas, what we consider improvements may not always be welcome by others.

Do what feels right for you, but consider the waiting audience and don't drive them away by making them wait too long. Remember that you should always do you best, but if you wait until you feel like something is perfect, it may never happen. Even if it does, you'll likely feel differently afterward. Do your best and get it to a point where you feel proud of it, even if it's not what you'd consider perfect. If you can't live with it or don't want to sign your name to it, it's probably not ready yet. If you're using the game and limited software capability for your comic graphics, I think this is especially important. You won't be able to control everything exactly as you see it in your head and that's already going to have some "built in" sacrifice. But if you feel like it's something you'd be proud to have you name on, it may be time to let it go even if it's not exactly as you'd hoped.

    Good luck.

Agreed. As long as someone is a good teammate and not a jerk, I don't care any more about his or her sexual orientation than I do the person's race, religion, or even political orientation.

That's right - I play with Democrats, Republicans, and even some Independants and I'm not ashamed!

In my experience, someone who gets introduced or comes on board with a friendly and open, "I am new, feel free to give advice", attitude tends to get treated very well by most everyone that I have seen. I would certainly rather know that then agonize over whether I should say something.
Good answer; I think I'll borrow it!

In order to survive, the game needs new players to replace those who leave. I want the game to survive, so I like seeing new players. That said, my appreciation, or lack thereof, entirely depends on the player him/herself. As Kat said, if the person has a good attitude and a willingness to learn how to play well and use his or her chosen powers to the best advantage of the team or positively contribute to the community, I'm more willing to be patient and helpful.

That goes for any player - new or old. I've spent nights where all I've done is answer questions in the various help channels when people seem like they really need help. I've taken people on tours of zones and had them pass enhhancements to me so I could help them figure out the difference between TO/DO/SO and invention enhancements. I have a standing offer on the forums to log or create a character on any server to help someone get all his or her alts into a small Supergroup. A person's level of experience matters less to me than a person's value to the community, willingness to be thoughtful of others, efforts to lean, and general humor and attitude. You don't have to be a vet player to be a good teammate and being a doofus isn't limited to new players.

So is it ok if they don't use force to try and run him out of town? There are a lot of ways to get someone to leave that don't involve force, just making someone feel uncomfortable. And that's what this sounds like, based on the third party description.

Of course a third part description like this is always questionable. It's always possible the people in question were letting the OP's friend know that, "hey, you're likely to run into a lot of people you disagree with/don't approve of if you stay here. If that's going to bother you, you may want to choose a server where you feel more comfortable." Depending on how something like that is said, it could be intimidation or it could be an honest attempt at giving the person a heads up to something he might not not be aware of. Sort of like the "R" rating on a movie that lets you know that you should expect it to have "adult situations" and that the movie may make you uncomfortable if you don't want to be presented with that kind of thing.

If the people did actually try to tell the person to leave the server and weren't trying to present information for the person to make his own informed choice, then I'd say that was wrong. There are ways to let someone know you disagree with their point of view without telling the person to leave and you have a better chance of actually changing the person's ideas if you allow the person to interact with you, whether that be by staying yourself or asking the person to stay. If the person is really bothersome or offensive, I'd advice that you don't team with the person or quit the team with the person on it to remove yourself from the situation (and petition if the person was offensive). You can't make people accept something they don't want to, whether that be gay people or the fact that some people don't like gay people. If you do want to change someone's mind, trying to push the issue or telling someone to change or leave will likely result in the exact opposite reaction and reinforce whatever the person's belief.

If you really want to change a person's behavior or beliefs, sometimes you need to start by changing your own.
  17. If you don't get a response here, try posting this on the Tech & Bugs forum. The people who answer questions there are generally very knowledgeable about tech/spec issues. Many of them answer questions here too, but the majority of the questions in this section are game-related, not tech related.

You can turn images and signature images off in the options on your User Control Panel (CP). Any post with an image will look to you like a post with a URL in it. You can click the URL to see the image if you choose to.
  19. And remember to check in with your PB contact every time you level. The Epic ATs all have their own story arcs and as you level up, they will offer you new missions.
  20. You didn't include the level of your character, so it's hard to be specific. On the villains side I found that, aside from the unlockable content, there's not a load of "extra" content beyond level 10 or 12. It's easy to outlevel the second level contacts in Mercy or the first few contacts in Port Oakes, but after that I think I pretty much did nearly every contact and every mission on any character I played mostly solo. If you have your difficulty up higher at a lower level or do end up teaming more often, you can outlevel them faster, but I didn't. (Note: this was before "XP Smoothing" came along and boosted the rate of XP.) More often than not, I would have to hold myself back from leveling in order to do things like get the Bling badge and unlock Doc Buzzsaw before I outleveled her.

Unless you turn off the XP gain, you can do anything and level. Pick the arcs you enjoy most or even go try some AE arcs, since they're new content. You can PL in the AE missions if you want, but you don't have to. I like doing AE missions to see what kinds of stories the other players are making up. Some of them are really very good.

  22. Yes, this feature seems to be buggy or, at the very least, not automated.

Here's the workaround I've been using:

Once I'm satisfied I've read everything I want to, I go to the top menu and select "Quick Links" and "Mark Forums Read." That will mark all threads as read and give you a better indicator of what's actually new. After that, you can use the "First new post" link at the top of any thread.

It's a hassle, but it does work.

  25. Make sure you're using all your resources to find people, too.

If you aren't a member of any global channels on your server, join some. (Check the Freedom server page for a list of global channels and start asking around for others.) That's a great way to access people who may not even be playing villains your level at the same time you are but who might be interested in changing if they find out someone else is putting a team together.

Post someting on the Freedom forums. Tell people what you plan on doing and when, then see if anyone wants to show up and join you. If you're only broadcasting or only searching for who's your level and in your zone/game at the same time you are, you're cutting yourself and your teaming options off from all the other players who may be on and looking for something to do. I know that in my global channels people will often switch characters or sides as soon as they hear someone has something going on that they can join, even if it's not with the character they have logged in at the moment.
