I bought CoH: AE from Steam and atm its still downloading, but when I upgrade my account with the serial I get it wants me to input my Credit Card information (again) even though AE includes a free month. What if I only want the free month included with AE and don't want to pay? I tried exiting out and playing CoH but it still said I was on the trial. I went back to my accout and it again said that I was on the trial. Is there anything I can do so I wont have to pay for another month? Many thanks.

You can put in your credit card info, then go in to your master account and cancel all billing. It will tell you when its scheduled to bill again, and as long as you cancel before then you wont be charged.

Oh and welcome to CoH!

Thank you for the info and the welcome! It worked and I'll do what you said. Who knows, maybe I'll continue paying XP.

Ah, the ol 'extended trial'.

You might as well start paying, 'cause before you know it you'll probably be hooked.

I bought the game and thought it was ridiculous to pay monthly to play a game and that I would cancel when the first free month ended. That was in June of 2004.

I remember reading the instruction booklet that came with the first release of the game.

and then memorising the map that came with it.

Also keep your eye out for any of the boxed editions you don't have (Good V Evil, Collectors, CoH, CoV, etc...) if you see them cheap (and unopenned) as you can use the free month from each seperate edition of the game. For a while Job Lots was selling the CoV and CoH Collectors Editions for between $6 and $10 depending on the store and the time.

Keep paper copies of the all the serial codes you apply. They can be used by customer service to identify you in case of a forgotten password or other problems.

I set up billing, then did the cancel to get my free month.

When my month was up (in the middle of a Synapse Task Force!), I actually RAN to get my credit card to re-apply.

They usually e-mail you the full code anyway when you apply it (even if it was an online electronic purchase). When you buy it, it only shows the last four in your account details, but it shows the full 20 in the e-mail once it's applied. I just keep all my NCSoft communications in a separate e-mail folder in case I ever need them.

Example:
Quote:
You have successfully applied the following serial code to NCsoft account 'account_name':

Date : Aug 17 2009
Game : City of Heroes City of Villains
Account: account_name
Serial : 1234-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234
Type : Perk

Please keep this email for future reference as the serial code may be required to obtain customer service.

Thank you,

-The NCsoft Team

Free time always gets added to the "Playable until:" date on your account management screen. You don't have to cancel any subscription to get your free time. You simply wont have to make another payment until 30 days after the "Renewal Date:" it showed before the time was added. The "Renewal Date:" should increment to reflect the added time as well. This is true for free time added for refer-a-friend as well.

When your billing runs out, it doesn't kick you offline, it just prevents you from completing the log-in process. Technically, you could have stayed logged in to complete the Task Force, ran another one, maybe a 3rd.. and stay logged in your base or another mission until the servers reset for their next maintenance.

Your account might have even expired before you started the TF. I'm assuming you DC'd or relogged for some other reason, and then was denied re-entry. That sucks though. It's a good thing you didn't lose your wallet that day. It would have made an already-bad day, even worse. lol

Hmmm. Was four years ago, so my memory is probably unreliable.

In any case, Zephyr, welcome to the game!

Been here over 4 years, and still enjoying it!
