  1. If it doesn't work from your computer or your sisters computer then it is probably your service provider.

Another possibility is the updater does not work if it is run from the program directory. Make that the updater is on your desktop or in a different folder than the cityofheroes folder.

Also some routers have a firewall built into the router itself. See if you can connect your computer directly to the modem and try again.
  2. There is another possibility. Although you are allowed to create a password with more than 13 characters the actual game client can't read more than 13 characters. So it's possible his password is too long.

To check for the NA vs EU thing ask him the actual name of the updater file. It should be cohupdater.exe but if it's the EU version it will be cohupdater.eu.exe. If that is his hijackthis log you posted then he is using the NA version.
  3. I'm with Father X. Underpowering the card can damage a card just as badly as overpowering it. And with that power supply voltage drops are almost certainly a common occurrence.
  4. It was then I realized that recreating the overpass jump scene from Speed was actually inspired by alcohol rather than genius.

If I am a winner, I permit NC Interactive, Inc. and NCsoft Europe Limited to use my name, likeness, photograph, hometown, and any comments that I may make about myself or this contest that I provide for advertising and promotional activities. I also certify that I am at least 13 years of age and am eligible to participate in this contest
  5. That is definitely a new one. It used to be that people entering an arena match would sometimes wind up in another player's mission but I've never heard of the opposite.
  6. I'm surprised. Usually uninstalling works.

I would try using a restoration point that was from before you installed the tablet, if there is one on your system that is.
  7. You can also use a slash command to see things at an even greater distance that maximized settings allow. "visscale 4" will increase the distance you see things to maximum. I've got it bound to a key and hit it every time I start playing.

    Login problem

    Two possibilities.

First Possibility: You are trying to login to a NA account with a EU version of the game or the other way around. The filenames for the NA versions are cohupdater.exe and citytofheroes.exe. The filenames for the EU versions are cohupdater.eu.exe and cityofheroes.exe.

Second Possibility: You have a password that is longer than 13 characters. When you create or change your password you are allowed to choose one that is longer than 13 characters. However the game client has a limitation of 13 characters so you will get the incorrect password message even if you type it correctly.
  9. While technically not a web "comic" it's still one of the funniest I've seen. Darths and Droids.

If you do get that MOBO be prepared to only have 2 available SATA ports. It has the same design flaw as many compact motherboards. In fact I just mentioned the flaw in another thread. Two of the SATA ports are directly in line with the PCIE slots. Most decent video cards are long enough and wide enough that they will partially or even completely cover those two ports. And unless you want to force the SATA cable into a tight 90 degree bend (which is very bad) it's unlikely you'll be able to get a cable in there.
  11. The biggest problem will likely not be the case width but rather where the SATA connectors are in relation to the video card slot. For some dimwitted designer reason it seems that a lot of the compact motherboards place their SATA ports directly in line with the PCIE slots. Any decent video card will extend far enough and be wide enough to cover at least a couple of the ports. The 8600 might be short enough to avoid this problem but you may be looking at losing at least a couple drive ports.

So how do you explain the fact that said character who would cease to exist without their powers didn't have those powers when they started out at level 1?

Unless of course you mean completely without powers including the starting powers.

Incidentally I personally love this idea.

Almost certainly a heat issue. Some systems do give out an alarm beep when they are about to auto shutdown from overheating.

The fact that it happened after the winter patch is coincidence. With the amount of players in the game and the failure rate of computers it is almost guaranteed that somebody is going to start seeing problems with their system right after a patch. I say almost rather than absolutely guaranteed because there is always a finite though small chance that nobody will have problems for a couple weeks after a patch.

Solutions. Get some canned air (or other air supply), open the computer and make sure that absolutely any dust inside is blown out. When cleaning the heat sinks make sure to hold the fan blades in place with a pencil eraser or something similar. If the blades spin fast enough there is a small chance that the stray voltage they cause could damage the motherboard. It's not worth the risk.

Once everything inside is clean, power up the system and watch to see that the fans are actually spinning at speed. Fans do occasionally fail but they are very very inexpensive and easy to replace.

Lastly, if the case is clean and the fans are working then it might just be time to replace the system. Computers do give up after a few years, especially if they are put through high stress situations like playing City of. This game stresses the processor and graphics card much more than most others out there, even the super graphics intensive ones. It's possible for the computer to fail while playing the game and yet still be able to surf the net and watch videos for a couple more years.

And look on the bright side. Although it's hard to justify the money for a new computer system when your old one works perfectly well, the failure of your old system gives you a good excuse to buy one capable of handling Going Rogue in ultra mode.

    d-bags

Don't you know that in RP that using i instead of I is code for "This person has tiny squinty (aka beady) eyes."?

And using txt speak such as "Wut r u up 2?" indicated a speech defect.

And lastly when a person rages about you supposedly not knowing their name that means they are actually playing a nobody in a cheap Halloween knockoff of that actual heroes costume. They are worried that the well known hero/villain Captain Insertnamehere who is often spoken of by civilians and who is often in the papers might get upset and come after Joe Wannabe if he thinks that the second rate copy cat is impersonating him rather than just imitating him.

If there are any more obscure things about RP you would like to know just ask and I'll make them u.... I mean explain them.

    Game Won't Load

If you have a graphics tablet hooked up to your computer that has also been known to keep the program from loading. Sometimes disabling the tablet works but sometimes it takes completely uninstalling the software.

    Calendar please

A coworker finally nagged me into trying WoW. So far I'm bored out of my mind but it does have one great feature I'd like to see in CoX. Attached to the mini map window is a tiny calendar page showing the current date. Clicking on it opens up a full calendar page showing the current month. Each event that is scheduled to begin or end during the month is listed on that particular date and clicking on them gives more information on the event. It would be a great way to figure out what events are going on and which are upcoming without having to go to the main page or forums.

Mine have been late occasionally but I've never had to open a support ticket. I just did a /petition and had the reward by the next time I logged in.

The reason we see so few cars is the ones that are on the streets belong to the billionaires. You can drop an earthquake, quicksand, flames and a mound of rocks in front of one of those cars and they will simply drive right through without even slowing. If the inventor of those things ever put their brainpower toward developing powered armor every superhero in Paragon would be out of business.
  20. The quickest way to clean up a drive is usually to delete video files and pictures. I've often found that people who have no idea why there is so little space on their hard drive will have a couple dozen movies or a couple thousand pictures and be completely unaware just how much space that takes up.

What is actually in the works is the ability to log to the character select screen without having to type your password and log back into the game. As of yet no mention has been made of eliminating the 30 second wait.

Also, if you currently try to log back into the game before your previous character has completely logged out then you get a pop up warning saying that the account is currently logged in. If you click the log in button a second time then the character that is still counting down vanishes so that you don't have two characters on at the same time.

    Another MMO?

    I suggest Hello Kitty Online.

    Yes it exists.
  23. Change the target line in your updater shortcut to this.

    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094

or to whatever directory you have it in with the -port 13094 tag on the end. That should speed things up considerably. It may take a minute or two to kick in but the speed boost should be significant.
