Quote:That could explain at least in part why everybody's been trying to make comic book superheroes be more "dark and gritty" in the last 20 years because maybe they think that people will get over the "silly/campy" factor if they make everyone wear darker colors. Obviously it fits for Batman, but it's really weird for others like Superman (the darker tone outfit in the latest movie for instance) and Wonder Woman (with all the black in her latest comic book outfit).Putting someone in a costume just triggers flashbacks of watching the 60s Batman tv show for a lot of people, I'm sure, including writers and actors but mostly the audience. Superhero costumes are inherently silly. They bring a level of camp just by their very existence in a television show.
Batman gets away with it (ironically enough) in the movies from the 80s on because it's armor. It looks like armor. It acts like armor. People get the need for body armor. The fact that it's dull black helps, too, and helps people get over the fact that he's wearing a cape. -
Quote:I'm not arguing it was a "less than perfect" movie. What I'm saying is that some movies are just bad because it was like they were destined to be bad. This one almost seemed like it was "supposed" to be good, but for some reason the Universe conspired to screw it up for no apparent reason.I can give you three solid reasons: bad writing, bad directing and bad acting. Watch that clip I posted above. It's amazing how bad it is. It's especially unforgivable for Colin Farrell to be that bad, since he's one of the best actors of his generation.
It just has that quality of being an "unexpected failure", which somehow was more irksome to me than just being a "guaranteed failure". I mean after all it had the great Colin Farrell in it - how could it have possibly failed?

Drop them and recast them. Unlike MM henchmen that whole "process" only takes several seconds. Besides if you're doing your job controlling and/or debuffing it rarely matters regardless. I don't even remember the last time I ever wanted to "recall" my pets. *shrugs*
-
Quote:Just don't get your hopes up too much on that. The way MM Henchman and non-MM pets have worked in this game have not significantly changed for over 6 years now. Yes there have been a few tweaks here and there, but nothing approaching even close to the level you're talking about.Well the only thing I'll say to that would simply have the only control over non-MM pets as actual commands, not stances. That way if you're a person like yourself who doesn't like micromanagement, then you don't have to issue them and can just let your pet do its own thing, but then at least the option is there for people like me who want to occasionally attack their own pets instead of the enemy. Like I say, I really doubt this would seriously make corrs or trollers play anything like a MM given the difference in actual type of control you have over them, numbers of pets, and the abilities and role of them.
Or like Alpha suggested, maybe the whole pet system could do with a complete overhaul, we'll see someday I'm sure.
The key to positioning non-MM pets is your own personal maneuvering. Also remember that pets to Controllers/Corruptors are at best the "icing" on the cake, not the cake itself. Unlike MMs those other ATs don't really actually -need- their pets to perform their primary duties. Because of that they also don't really need to make sure their pets are actually doing anything specific at any given moment. That's probably the main paradigm shift you'll need to make to deal with this. You basically almost need to assume the pet(s) aren't even there. You can't rely on them so DON'T rely on them. Just accept that at the end of a combat you did alright because YOU handled the enemies with your controls or debuffs and if a few pets came along for the ride then good for them.
Good luck regardless.

Quote:Obviously your perception of the way pets and players work in this game has been colored by your experiences playing a MM. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that by any means - I'm just making the point that you and I are coming at this thing from two different directions. I played this game for so long before MMs even existed that the idea of "tediously micromanaging" pets with direct commands drives me crazy.I see your point, but I am not suggesting "full" control and stated that I don't think non-MM pets should receive MM levels of control, just enough to be able to guide them towards a suitable target so that they don't waste their potential And while yes I would agree with you that corr and troller pets would have to be nerfed if they allowed their owners to act like MMs, but I'm not asking for that and I can't see being able to tell your pet to "attack that one, not that one" would be as gamebreaking as you imply.
On another small note, I commend you on your ability to apparently position yourself so well, but that simply makes me think "Wait, this is MY pet, they should be adjusting themselves to me, not the other way around!" which may be a little silly, but the principle still stands.
Bottomline I think what can be said is that there's nothing really wrong with different ATs' pets working fundamentally differently. For me I see the ability to essentially "fire and forget" my Imps as strength, not a weakness. Their ability to be used as "aggro absorbing cannon fodder" and the advantage of having them up a ready within about 3 seconds of casting makes them very versatile, assuming you know what you're doing with them of course.
Like I said it may be a style you may never get used to and that's fine. No one said everyone had to like everything about this game. But clearly the answer is NOT to try to make Controller/Corruptor pets even remotely like MMs henchs (even assuming the Devs would ever entertain the idea). Ironically if you were able to give my Fire Imps even the level of control you are talking about I'd probably never use it because I'd never -need- to use it.
As Yoda says you need to "unlearn what you have learned."
-
This was all I had to read in relation to this often suggested suggestion.
Corruptor/Controller pets are balanced around the idea that they trade away "full controllability" for "overall AT power". A Controller or Corruptor which can ALSO act almost like a MM would be far too powerful. The only way the Devs could allow a Corruptor/Controller to have direct control over their pets would be to nerf them down so much that they would be practically useless.
I have been running with Fire Imps on my main for almost 7 years now and I can tell you without reservation that I would not change a thing about the way they work. I have learned how to "control" them via my own positioning and it's probably been years since the last time they "accidentally" did anything I didn't want them to do.
I can sympathize that as a MM player you think you "lack" control over those kinds of pets. But the answer to your problem is not asking the Devs to make them like what you're used to. The answer is to adapt to a new style of play and learn how master it. You may find that you never quite get used to it and that's fine. But don't mistake your dislike for it on some kind of notion that they are somehow "broken" and need to be fixed.
-
I never totally disliked the movie, but there was always something about it that never quite made it as cool as it might have been. It was like it tried really hard to be a first class movie but never managed to focus itself well enough to reach past being a second class affair. If anything I'm almost upset more that it somehow managed to "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" when there was no solid reason that should have ever happened.
Oh well, maybe a reboot will fix that problem. -
Quote:I actually noticed that a minute ago and thought it was kind of ironic myself. *smiles deviously*

Quote:You do realize that even if there is a legitimate long standing problem with the EU players being treated as "second class" players that once this server list merge happens all of that finally goes away completely. This merge is going to effectively wipe out any distinction or difference between a "NA" server and a "EU" server. We will all finally be treated equally by default.I don't care how small the numbers are for conflicts.
Any move by a business that shows preference to one group of customers over another, to the point where the business is admitting they're deliberately showing a preference, will cause a drop of morale in the 'victim' group.
They're getting off lightly because it's a minor issue. But with the long history of the EU players being utterly screwed over on several occassions it feels a bit like being prodded with a stick after being kicked several times.
I strongly urge the Community Reps and Developers to take a long, hard look at their future plans within the community and ensure there's a nice solid downtime where the EU players get a break from the conga line of poor service.
No competitions for NA only customers, No improvements to only NA servers, No NA only events.
And on the flipside, don't insult our intelligence with an EU only event or contest. You don't create a balance by constantly flip-flopping between extremes.
You want to do something for everyone? Fine by me. But don't create any more divides in the playerbase until there's been time for us to heal up a bit and get over this one.
The details of the merge may be problematic and some people may get upset by the name conflicts. But the main reason the Devs are doing this is to DIRECTLY FIX the problem of the "us and them" situation once and for all. You may not like the method to reach the goal of unification, but the goal is what everyone has wanted for years regardless. -
Quote:The cliche "the exception that proves the rule" comes to mind here. Not brawl.
(And I kept a straight face while holding up that example)
Opressive Gloom, too - but that uses a self-dot instead.
Just because you can find a couple of examples out of hundreds doesn't invalidate the general paradigm that all powers cost something to use and that cost is going to be "balanced" by the effect it causes. Vet powers are relatively costly to use because they are relatively strong for what they do. -
Quote:It's nice that the Devs gave us the option to buy respec tokens with real world money. But honestly making influence in this game is so relatively simple that I would probably never bother with that option. For instance it would probably only take me a couple of weeks to earn the influence I'd need to just buy a whole new set of Standard/Purple/PvP IOs for a level 50 build and completely slot over any existing slotted enhancements.I wasn't really looking at it as a whole new system but rather a click button to skip power selection and just allow you to pull 10 enhancements down to the tray and be done. still burns a respec so it wouldn't be anything other than a QOL upgrade for the player. The devs even stand to make some more of our cash if they charge for it as a specific option outside of a standard respec
To completely strip an IOd toon down it cost something like 10 respecs, at $10 a pop from the store thats $100, which is kinda steep, but if they would sell them at $5 each that would be $50 and I bet folks would pay $50 to strip down an obsolete toon to get all thier IOs back.
the only difference is the $5 version does not allow you to change any power selections
There's an obvious need for the complete respec and there's the "it'd be nice to have" QoL improvement of being able to remove single enhancements that's been suggested. Beyond that there's really not much call for your "quasi-pseudo" respec idea that couldn't already be worked around. The Devs are never going to bother to give us a mini-respec feature because it would be far too much work for them to justify. But they might eventually give us the relatively simple "Black Hole IO" deal, and that would serve your purpose well enough. -
I'd agree that even considering a "new" respec system for this issue is making a mountain out of a molehill. This is why something like the Black Hole IO thing is such a simpler solution to the problem at hand.
-
Quote:If the Devs are looking to make this process be an "influence sink" they could always make sure that the suggested Removal / Black Hole recipe costs a lot of influence to buy/craft.I'm not going to say that this will never happen.
The developers are against unslotting as enhancements are the only real influence sink within the game.
-
Another suggestion I've seen along the same lines is giving us the ability to buy a "Removal recipe" (or PennyPA's "black hole" IO idea).
This recipe would allow us to create a "Removal enhancement" the only purpose of which is to be slotted on top of an existing slotted enhancement. When this is done the old slotted enhancement is popped out of its slot and placed back on the enhancement tray. The used Removal enhancement then disappears leaving you with an empty slot.
I honestly don't know why they haven't given that to us yet.

Quote:The line between having multiple builds of a particular AT/powerset combo on one character versus having several characters who all share the same AT/powerset combo is pretty gray. If what you're asking for wasn't so easy to accomplish just by having multiple characters I might agree with you. But as it stands my guess is that so few people would want more than 3 builds on one character that the Devs would likely consider there's not enough demand to offer it.A build slot is like a character slot to people like me who only play a couple of characters.
It's good for the game economy too, since it in effect creates another character for me that I want to fill with enhancers.
Then again it's always possible we'll get a fourth build via some other award like when we unlock our Omega Incarnate ability for instance. *shrugs* -
Quote:Eh, so I don't have that particular set of "earth-cloned fantasy" maps memorized.Actually, the map of Conan's world maps to the real world fairly well.

My point still stands. People who are upset that an ACTOR playing a role is not Swedish, Celtish, Klingon or whatever need to lighten up just a tad. It's this guy's chance to do a good job with the role regardless. If he messes up I'm sure there will be plenty of other reasons to fault him other than the fact that he's Polynesian. -
Quote:Ha! That made me lol. English can be fun to mess around with.

Quote:As a NA player posting on this thread I have never once claimed that:IMO the fairest way in the event of a conflict is to award the unmodified global to the longest active account.
It is not fair to have to give up your global to an NA account just because you have an EU account. Just as others were saying that its not fair for an NA account to lose its global to a 1 month EU account, it is also not fair for a 6 year EU account to lose its global to a 2 year NA account. The thing all you NA players have to remember is that even if this seems like a minor issue, after years and years of second class treatment this just feels like a final kick in the teeth to a lot of us.
And as a side note, I find it amusing that the people who are at no risk of losing their globals are the ones trying to tell us that its no big deal.
1) The way the Devs are doing this is the "fairest way" or the "perfect way" to do it.
2) That this situation is a "minor issue" or "no big deal".
3) That EU players who are affected by this don't deserve to be reasonably upset.
But what I will continue to claim is that given the constraints of engineering and business realities at hand the way the Devs are handling this is likely the cheapest, easiest, least impactful way to accomplish the job at hand. Is it perfect? No. Is it fair? No. But business is business.
People can obviously continue to be upset with it if they want to be. But at the end of the day you can only spit so much into the wind before you either accept the reality of the situation one way of the other. Our Devs have to balance the interests of the players as well as their own interests and along the way they are bound to piss a few people off here or there. But as with every other "game-shattering" controversy the game will continue long after the dust settles on this regardless. -
Quote:I think these minor NA/EU differences you're talking about are going to be smoothed over once we are required to use the NCsoft Launcher. That's probably one of the main reasons they want everyone to switch over to using that to launch the game no matter what server you want to play on.And, if there are differences... any idea if we'd be able to use either version of the client once the merger happens?

Quote:I've always treated Photon Seekers as a slightly random mini-nuke so to me the 300 second recharge never seemed overly too long.To be fair White, the Seekers also actually do more damage than the Nuke, going by Mids at any rate

Sure I'd like to see it shortened as much as anyone - I just don't think that'll ever happen without nerfing its damage output. -
Just to add a bit of completeness to this thread the 45th month Vet reward also suffers from the same problem the 69th month one does. All we get is a badge and a respec token there too.

While I think the idea of attaching Jet Packs to either of these awards would be pretty bad I do think they BOTH need to be given something unique because as it stands these are the only two Vet awards that are lacking anything "special" about them. -
Quote:This is why I mentioned people being unreasonably upset Lynda Carter is not going to be able to keep playing Wonder Woman in my last post. Unless you can figure out how to de-age Ah-nold 30 years and keep him that way he's not going to be able to play the role of Conan forever. Eventually someone else is going to have to give it a try.I'll give it a shot, I'm an Ahnold fan when it comes to Conan, but hell if the movie is good, I'll be fine with it.
I don't really mind Momoa giving it a try. If he can handle the action required for the role I'm sure he'll do fine with it. Besides where exactly in the world of Conan is "Northern Europe" located? Let's not worry too much about fitting a real world actor's ethnicity 100% exactly to a fictional one.Quote:My point was rather that Conan is described as being bronzed and dark from spending a lot of time out in the sun - as such, it's hardly a stretch to have an actor with darker skin (like Momoa) playing Conan.
-
The weirdly funny part about this video for me is that Simon Pegg kind of looks a lot like the older Mark Hamill, at least when you just concentrate on looking at his face without the hair that's hidden under the helmet.
-
I thought this suggestion was particularly humorous because people have been trying to convince the Devs to remove this penalty from the standard Group Fly for seven years now. I figure if they haven't budged for that they're not likely to "fix" the Kheldian version either.
-
Quote:Well the subtle trick to my "conditional acceptance" of this idea is that I'm reasonably sure the Devs will NEVER let us respec our Origins. If they did that, I'm still kind of against it, but not nearly as much. I mean, my Tanker is a magical being, summoned by magic, and who uses magic. However, if he gets a better bonus to what he is supposed to do by respecing into the Technology origin, then I've got an RP problem on my hands that doesn't need to be there.
