But when it comes to a messy build, that's a deal-breaker. See, I like neatness and order. It calms me down and makes me focused. A build that looks pristine, orderly, almost factory-made is something I can be proud of. A build that looks like I duct-taped various builds together into a hodgepodge of whatever I ran across is the primary reason I don't play any other MMOs... Or really, any other RPGs. I can put up with it, but it wears on me and kills the game for me in the end.
Then you are looking at it the wrong way. If someone posts you a build and says put it in MIDs, do so. Then study what they did. Look at each set they used. Then go research them on Paragonwiki. By researching and studying builds like this you can teach yourself how to slot your character that fits your playing style. The best way for this is to learn from what others have done. You may find someone's build that is a close representation of your own playing style or vision of what you are looking to do with your character. This is the beauty of MIDs; it literally helps you design a character's ability and enhancing them so you can maximize their potential.

You do not have to use what they give you. Most of the time when someone posts a build for another it is an example of what he or she recommended. The truth of the matter is what works for one may not work for another person. Therefore, study what others have done to reach their goals. Then adapt it to your mindset and make it your own.

I am sure if your learning something in a classroom setting or on the job training you would not respond in the manner as you did above. The most foolish thing anyone can do is not look at the results of someone else's work, study it, and then take from it what they can to make better. However, after studying something, you do not feel that is for you, then you move on.

If you truly want to do what you stated originally in this post, then you will be more open and receptive to these types of ideas. However, you are still a bit defensive about this inasmuch you don't want to do what others are doing. That is what I read from your replies so far.
  2. You know, I guess that aging a normal Super Hero like what we've seen in the game of the NPC is a cool thing if you want to do it. However, I don't see an Incarnate aging based on Statesman, Recluse, Cole, and the others.

Since this thread, I mulled over an Archer character (Trick Arrow/Archery). I decided to give it a try. I know what to expect at lower levels thanks to your reply. So far, I'm enjoying playing this new defender. I'd like to see them make Trick Arrow available to the Blaster though. I think it would be a perfect fit. Probably too powerful for the AT. <shrugs>
  5. A pang of regret; however, I realized it was for the best because I would replace it with with an improved character.

While what you say might be true, I doubt it would be a rampant problem inasmuch as a very small percentage would resort to doing that. Many who post to this board, like other game genre boards, are dedicated to the game in play and understanding its mechanics. Most I would say, from my experience, frown on doing that. Some do I have noticed but only to verify builds and performance.

The problem as I see it, regarding guidelines, is they become static. Writing a Tome for others is very time consuming. From how this thread started, I can see this becoming a foundation for a dynamic guideline where people can contribute to it, thus relieving one person from having to do it all, requiring far less work. Heck, it could be in the same format as the Tanker suggestion thread. Players can take from it what they want. As a guide helps people understand the flow and process, players can adapt their playing style to the mechanics and builds as they progress.

This thread or one like it has the potential to become knowledge base for old and new to use. One that everyone participates in offering up their own insights and experiences. Where someone might like what you have said about one thing, others about Aett_Thorn, New Dawn, LSK, and others have said, and use it or adapt it to fit how they play.

The answer is rather simple, though some may not like it. What is it you ask?

Lord Recluse, for the sake of protecting Arachnos' future, shows each of his Lieutenants the 'Way of the Well.' In doing so, granting them Incarnate Powers and given expanded roles in defending Arachnos and expanding Recluse's agenda.

Funny thing about it though, the path they followed would be the same path as the players in level of power. Even so, they will not become a threat to Recluse, even if they all banded together.

In other words, their incarnate powers are greater than the players are only because they are an AV, but far less than what Recluse, Statesman, Hero 1, or even Cole's powers are.

That's how I see them being kept from becoming marginalized and redundant.

This is a discussion board where all ideas, good, bad, or indifferent are discussed. All ideas will face scrutiny from every one. A poster should be prepared for any heat that may come and defend their position within the confines of respectful interaction.

If one cannot stand being called on the carpet in a manner like myself, Thunder Knight or someone else might do. Then said person should reconsider why they interact. That or they should grow thicker skin.

The people who use guides are those that are generally unfamiliar with a set/AT/the game. Those are the ones who really need a little bit more detail on how things work. A build, without context or detail, just isn't that useful for them. *

Like I said, I think that a renewed effort on Guides is a good task. I just don't think that random builds help the people that need the guides. But having a consolidated Tanker build thread might be good, too.
While I understand your point, I have to disagree with it. This is what I read from your post, “Those of us who know what we are doing don't need this. Only those who lack the knowledge and experience do. *” You may not mean this as it sounds, but what I get from your post.

The moment someone says, "I know it all I do not need to learn anymore shows him or her self a fool." No one, no matter how experienced or educated they are, stops learning. The purpose of this thread as I see it can benefit everyone, including those who can build a character in their sleep without Mids. Sometimes doing it in a certain manner may not be the proper way anymore.

The mechanics, powers, and abilities in this game are evolving. What is true now for one-way 2 years ago certainly will not the same for now or in the upcoming i22, i23, and beyond. A mark of a good player is in their ability to learn, adapt, and improve on their performance and the process they use.

This thread is a practice in 'improving the process' of which we do things here. It is one thing to build a character to a known specification for performance. It is quite another to improve the process which exceeds the existing specification by moving the bar up (Deming, 1981).

An example of this is improving the process that allows you to soft cap and max out hit points without ever having to use an inspiration or become an incarnate to get there. Furthermore, do it every time you create a new character. When the game changes again, reassess the process and find a way to improve on it again.

In my case, I have found splitting two sets on one power can increase the performance or defense, whichever I am looking for. I am using 3 Devastations & 2 Apocalypse with Hurl. That gives me +12% regen, +2.25% health, +3% damage with Devastation and +16% regen & +3% health with Apocalypse. I have increased my regen by +28%, health by +5.25%, and overall damage by +3%. This does not take into account the others I have slotted either. In this case, I was looking to increase my survivability using this power.

Even though the performance of my character is great, I know I can increase it substantially, even though she is a 50+3 level incarnate. This thread and others like it show various different approaches in reaching a goal. By using input from others, including you, and analyzing the data, one can find how to improve the process that we all are striving for in building a character that in our own view is the ultimate build.

I do not know about you, I'd like to take my character (in the case of my example a Brute) up against a Siege by myself in the BAF and pound him into twisted metal and walk away with a smile. Alternatively, to take on Recluse in Recluse's Victory or STF and faceplant him and not worry about using one inspiration while doing it. Lofty goal, sure it is; however, I believe it is possible. A thread like this can certainly help me, you, and everyone else get there.

I've tried really hard but I just can't manage to enjoy playing him for more than short bursts of time when I'm just chewing the hell out of every enemy that dares come near me (then I die).

    YMMV.
Funny that you mention this about your Dark/Dark, my former Dark/SR was like that from mid-forty up. I had him IO'd out that took advantage of recharge. However, He could not last in PI, Rikti Warzone, or even attempt to any trial to unlock the alpha slot. Compared to my friends scrapper with Dark/WP (who I ran with a lot), my scrapper with SR sucked. The telling sign was in Recluses Victory. I thought the thing had a glass jaw it was that bad, regardless of what my IO enhancements were.

Right now, I am enjoying the new build. Last night, my close friend with his Gravity/Energy Assault Dominator and I started the second tier of missions for 'The Shining Stars.' The first mission was incredibly difficult for some reason. We ran into a number of red and orange leaders and all the minions were yellow as were the subsequent missions. My setting is +0. The performance of my build reminded me of one of my tanks at that level (11 - 12). I took a pounding to be sure; however, I dished out more than I received even with standard training enhancements. Endurance is my only issue. However, I believe I have a better control over it now that I am using the magical enhancements.

Correct. Game wise I assume 800 yards is supposed to represent a mile, which equates to 2,400 feet or .45 miles.

No that's what is funny. It never indicated requiring an update. It shows that it is updated. I even verified it with the current update serial #. I'm guessing it nerfed itself and requires deletion and reloading.
  16. Do not feel bad about it. On the night of Tanker Tuesday on Freedom, our entire team of tanks (lvl 41) spent a great deal of time studying the grains of sand. We finally had to give up the fight in the end because we could not defeat Romulus no matter what we tried to do.
  17. So, based on what I'm reading, I should expect great things from my Dark/Dark blaster I created last night?

This is why I chose to reroll my scrapper. After reading and comparing Dark Armor to Super Reflexes, and "hearing" others on this subject, I wanted to pair DM with DA. Besides the performance factor, conceptually, it works better with a character who received his power from the Egyptian Moon God. Well, at least in my mind's eye.
  19. Why did I not like SR? After using WP, Inv, and Shield with my Brutes and Tankers, I quickly soured on SR. Let's just say my experience with the performance of SR did not meet my expectations I was originally told to expect when I first started. Everyone has a power set the do not like or want to use again, for me it is Super Reflexes.

Really? Do you know what goes into conducting a standard scientific survey? The type demographics used? What the number of respondents required representing a cross section of the targeted group? It is immense. I can assure you that a message board community, much like this one, does not represent the entire general population of this game’s fan base or any other game.

What the message board's membership represents is a finite percentage of participants who integrate the game into their lives. Your average gamer/player do not spend on a message board or interacting in a like medium. Most of those fans that do come to an official board observe only. Right now, there are 4119 people on this board, 3438 are guests, and 681 are members. Members make up 16%, guests 83%. Of the 175,472 members, less than 1% (.00388) is active at this moment. That may represent an active message board; however, it does not represent game’s fan population as a whole.

Conversely, this does not tell a complete story. Of those members, how many actually participate? Of the guests, who are members who no longer participate only lurk? There are a immense number of factors involved in a scientific survey/poll for researching and analyzing empirical data in order to formulate and make quantified statement or make an informed decision.
  22. For some reason my tracker quit tracking Tuesday night after I rerolled a character. When I started it last night, it did so normally. However, after I started CoH, Tracker could not locate CoH or my character. I tried updaing to see if I missed one, there was nothing to update. Even after restarting twice it still did not want to work. Therefore, before I deleted it and reloaded, I want to find out if anyone else is having trouble with their own Tracker?

You are exactly right. A message board is populated by certain percentage of the gaming population and thus does not even come close to representing the player base as a whole. You cannot even begin to gather empirical evidence to quantify the remark that Doctor Roswell made. It is not possible. Moreover, making up a message board poll is about as scientific as measuring the stinkage factor of a fart. It still stinks and fails to do anything but gauge the members of a message board’s opinion, nothing else.
  24. ...replaced my very first character when I started with one that had I known more about the game I would have chosen better secondary powers.

Knight of Khonsu was a Dark Melee / Super Reflexes scrapper. However, the new revised Khonsu's Knight is a Dark Melee / Dark Armor scrapper.

In order not to make the same mistake in power selection I considering the following now and after (-) respecting.

Shadow Punch - Yes for now (Drop on Repec)
    Smite - Yes
    Shadow Maul - Yes
Touch of Fear - Yes (Might drop after respect, not sure)
    Siphon Life - Yes
    Confront -No
    Dark Consumption - Yes
    Soul Drain - Yes
    Midnight Grasp - Yes
    -------------------------------------------------
    Dark Embrace - Yes
    Death Shroud - Yes
    Murky Cloud - Yes
    Obsidian Shield - Yes
    Dark Regeneration - Yes
    Cloak of Darkness - Yes
Cloak of Fear - Yes (Not sure I'll want to keep)
Oppressive Gloom - Yes (Not sure I'll want to keep)
    Soul Transfer - Yes

I will be adding Fighting (Kick, Toughness, Weave) for the defensive modifiers. Super Leap, Cbt Jumping, and Spring Attack.

For my Epic Power Pool, I believe I'll go with either: Body or Weapon mastery. The latter will fit my character's background as a former Operator for Delta Force. I had body before, but wasn't impressed with it.

So, that's what I'm looking at doing with this character. I'm not thinking about Incarnate yet because that's far off from now. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? I welcome them. Thanks.
  25. What they have so far seems more plausible and believable with the amount suspension of belief required than say, World of Warcraft in my opinion.
