Is Dark Blast any good on Blasters?

So I have yet to try Dark Blast on a Blaster since being added and was wondering how it compares to the other blast sets? I was thinking of pairing it with /mental maybe as I already have a /darkness (My fire/darkness blaster) which I'm having a blast with. Point is I would really like to try it and was just wondering those who have played it. What do you think of the set? Are the changes made good or bad for the set as a whole?

I'm having quite a bit of fun with my Dark/Mental/Elec blaster. It's not top of the barrel damage but it is one of the more survivable blaster combinations that I've played.

Umbral Torrent provides decent mitigation from KB and the to hit debuff that it applies. Tenebrous Tentacles further debuffs their to hit and keeps mobs out of melee range.

The AoE chain has long animations you can get away with lower recharge here. T_T and Static Discharge need extra range slotting.

Having a ranged damage power that is also a powerful (and un-interruptible) heal is a boon that all blaster sets should have IMHO.

It's not top of the line for damage but it makes up for that with greater than average safety.

Its ok.....but when you get a chance...make sure you take the Patron Powers from Ghost widow to accompany your powers

It's a late reply but I really enjoy Dark Blast on Blaster. I have a 50 Dark/Mental/Munitions.

Just take Hover and open the battle with Aim/Build Up and aoe knock back and scream.

Dark Blast is a very safe set. You get a good aoe knock back, a single hold and an attack with healing and stacking tohit.

I would rank Dark Blast as top 3 blaster combo. It is like the opposite of Fire Blast. You trade some damage with many good utilities. Comparing to other Dark Blast, it is way better IMO because you get Aim. I never understand a true nuke power with no Aim/Build Up on Corr/Defender.

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Also, I haven't played it that high yet, but it seems as though (on paper at least) Abyssal Gaze would be one of the best holds in the game. A full mag 3 hold put into one of the strongest attacks in the set? Yes please.

So, based on what I'm reading, I should expect great things from my Dark/Dark blaster I created last night?

Current active characters: Dragon Maiden (50+3 Brute SS/WP/PM), Black Widow Maiden (50+1 Night Widow), Catayclasmic Ariel (50 lvl Defender - Kin/DP), Quantumshock (50 lvl Elect/Energy/Energy), American's Defender (38 lvl Tanker - SD/Mace), Spider-Maiden (15 lvl Corruptor - RB/PD) & Siren Shrike (15 lvl Defender - Sonic/Sonic). My entire stable.

I don't like the synergies between dark/dark because I like to have one more cone attack and I really like Drained Psyche. My build doesn't even use Psionic Shockwave. I am that lazy to go in to use it. lol Scream's damage is about the same as Shockwave (minus the stun effect).

I think Dark Blast is great for Blaster because it gives you so much more survival. The damage is really not that bad. Gaze is a mag 3 hold that does decent damage.

My Dark/Mental didn't take the Fear power, melee or the confuse toggle. I took tough/weave/hover.

I have Dark blast/psi/scorp. Got to say I love him. With Scrop shield and IO sets, I have L/S/NRG def capped. Also the little pets spiders are cool. Good ST attack chain with Gloom/Drain life/Absmal. AE is nice aswell with 3 good cone attacks. I like the damage and survivability combo.

I also have the BPAEs. Its just fun hitting Demonic aura and frenzy as I move to engage that group of bots in Baf (just north of courts), firing off Void with the -50 damage duff, then Aim/concentration/shockwave/Drain psyche and Finally Blackstar. Everything dies nicely....and if a mob survived those little spider pets clean up what little hp it has left.

Then I sit back and watch the rest of the 23 toon, kill off the other 3 groups. Knowing I just did 1/4 of the work. I like watching the brutes and scrappers work so hard to catch up.

Of course the only reason I am watch is I have no end left (thanks Blackstar).

I run Muscular/Clarion/spec interface/viod... I have number of T4 lores. I like crims and elements but thematicly I use Acachanos alot...matchs with spider pets and my story line. I Love clarion for blasters.

Overall I would highly recommend the darkblast.

Darkness also has all the parts to grab tons of damage bonus sets. To Hit debuffs, sniper attack, etc. Pair it with MM for the confuse set and you can hit every single purple damage buff available plus hit the law of five on every other damage bonus. It takes just about all of your slots except of course six in abyssal/gloom/siphon life, so you have no AE... but with a setup like that plus Assault, Decimation BU proc in one attack, and a damage alpha, anything you point your attack combo at will VAPORIZE.

Mine is only 27 IIRC... but I'm going for it.

I found dark/dark to be underwhelming...so underwhelming that I deleted the character and re-rolled, mainly due to the fact that /dark is a blapper set and I hate blapping.

I rerolled the character as dark/energy...and am *much* happier I have both Aim *and* Build Up, now...you think either one of those is good? try firing off a sniper attack with them stacked!

@Mistress Rue
Yes, I RP and play Redside on Virtue - No, Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated

Do you suck at COH/COV? not yet...

And then you look at Cosmic Burst and Lancer Shot, albeit stuns (which is just as good in terms of mitigation, only falling short in situations where the object is to stack holds), have the same duration and mag, but on powers with significantly better damage and recharge.

Dark Blast has a very cool power in Abyssal Gaze, but what keeps me playing it is Drain Life, a legitimate Blaster heal without all the pitfalls of Aid Self.

I'd also be interested to see how the Gravitic Anchor proc works in Tenebrous Tentacles. TT is 8 tics of DoT, and that -might- qualify it for 8 chances per enemy to trigger the proc. Even if it only triggers once every ten seconds or so, it will make a difference in conjunction with Abyssal Gaze.

I'm enjoying my Dark/Energy Blaster tremendously. The AoE is a bit lacking (I skipped the cone KB), but it's a steady single target killer both at range and in melee. Power Boost and Boost Range make for interesting tactics.

My overall plan is to make both a PvE and PvP build, but we'll see how it goes.

Too many alts to list.

Dots do not trigger procs per tick. They only have their chance to trigger checked when the power is initially activated. You'll get a check for every mob you hit with it but only one check each.

Psuedo pet patch powers check when you initially cast them and every 10 seconds after that. That's why some people like the Ragnarok Proc in Caltrops. It can proc 5 times during its duration.

I'm aware of that but Tenebrous Tentacles isn't a pseudopet. I was talking specifically about dots, which TT is.

Right. Caltrops is a DoT patch power. I wanted to make sure there was no confusion between the 2
