...Defender since my Kin/DP reached 50 and well on her way into being an Incarnate.

I am looking at three different character types here. All are direct fire support; however, I'm not sure which main power that would pair with them. Here's what I'm looking at.

#1 - Trick Arrow / Archery - or - Traps / Archery - or - Time Manipulation / Archery

#2 - Traps / Beam Rifle - or - Force Field / Beam Rifle - or - Empathy / Beam Rifle.

#3 - Empathy / Sonic - or - Thermal / Sonic - or - Sonic / Sonic.

This is my second defender I intend to take to 50. I've never used these powers so I am curious of what I listed, which are the best for paring. Conversely, if you have a suggestion for another primary type, please do so. Thanks!


Current active characters: Dragon Maiden (50+3 Brute SS/WP/PM), Black Widow Maiden (50+1 Night Widow), Catayclasmic Ariel (50 lvl Defender - Kin/DP), Quantumshock (50 lvl Elect/Energy/Energy), American's Defender (38 lvl Tanker - SD/Mace), Spider-Maiden (15 lvl Corruptor - RB/PD) & Siren Shrike (15 lvl Defender - Sonic/Sonic). My entire stable.

Well, your secondary is the same within each selection, so I'll assume that you really love the blast set and are just trying to get something to pair with it.

(1) TA/A has no redraw and so is a natural to pair with A. Be sure to make a recharge-focused build. Traps/ and Time/ are also really strong sets so are also good contenders although I don't see any particular synergy with A because A is all ranged and has a cone and these two (de)buff sets have close range powers. Anything should work though.

(2) Traps/Beam is easily the strongest of what you list IMO (Edit for clarity: I mean easily the strongest of the 3 /Beam choices)--Traps has enough set and forget powers that redraw is not an issue and traps is very strong. You'll have issues where you are running up to set things and then running back to fire cones though. FF/Beam comes up next because at least there is no redraw (at all, pretty much) and no positioning worries even though many dislike FF/ and feel it is comparatively weak. Empathy/Beam seems like it would be a pain in the neck to me...you don't want active primaries with /Beam.

(3) All would work. /sonic is very very strong for defenders with a lot of debuffing -res. I personally think thermal/sonic is probably the best of them, but it would make me sad as I like to stick to theme and so sonic/sonic would be nice as well (although many do not like sonic/ and feel it is comparatively weak.) Empathy/sonic is also fine I am sure.

Do you intend to play more in teams or solo with the character? From your choice of thermal and empathy, it looks like you want to team more, but some of those options are more solo-friendly than others.

I agree that out of those options, Traps/BR looks pretty strong, and it's good solo or in teams. TA/A not only benefits a lot from high recharge, but it's also very late blooming... I played one solo in the early levels and it was painful (the mid-to-high level build looks beastly even solo, though).

As for Sonic/Sonic, I must be weird, then. I really love seeing a Sonic Resonance character joining a team I'm in. Especially nowadays, with everybody and their grandma soft-capped to ranged or S/L, throwing nice resistance AND AoE mez protection on top of that makes my squishies (not so squishy anymore, with high def) feel very bold. And the res debuff is great.

And as a player, I really prefer just telling people to stay in the big bubble to avoid hold/stun/immob, instead of recasting thaw on each member of the whole team every minute and a half (the mez protection clickies didn't get the full-league AoE treatment that other buffs did, right?)...

From what I've read, sonic on defenders is better than any other AT. It's one of those sets that's clearly better one one AT than others. So if you're making a defender, I'd go with the best. As far as primary, I think thermal is the best out of the three. Empathy is pure buffing, which can get old. Sonic/ just isn't that powerful in many cases. Meanwhile therm is the perfect mix between the two, and a good mix of buffs and debuffs. So my vote is therm/sonic.

/Sonic is a very good set on defenders. I would go with therm/sonic for great solo and team play. I can tell you from experience that 2 emp/sonics are insane, but whenever I try to solo with him, I find the character rather lacking. Thermal will give you great buffs and debuffs, and sonic is just a great set all around. Solo, just sleep the group, stun one enemy, and kill them off one by one. On a team, spam howl, keep shields on, and debuff the hell out of everything.

Wow, thanks all. I believe I'll go with my gut on Sonic/Sonic. I've never used this power type before and I have witnessed it first hand. I intend to solo and team up with this defender. Thanks again!

#2. I'm currently running a Traps/Beam and it's fantastic. Mortar + Disintegrate combo really stacks up some nice damage.

Rather than Emp/Sonic, have you considered a Rad/Sonic?

I'm having fun with mine taking down AVs and GMs. Teams love me too.

Sonic/Sonic yaaaay. Easy to play, no real restrictions on Epic Pools, -160% enemy Resitances all by yourself, and this is a number you can keep up permanently. The only set that could do more is Trick Arrow if an achiles proc goes off in Acid Arrow, that could bring you to -180% enemy resistances on a single target, and Howl + Acid + Disruption Arrow + really lucky achiles procs = -100% enemy resistances in an AoE... except those AoEs have different sizes and achiles procs don't go off on EVERY single target hit. Also redraw... yuck. Sonic/Sonic ftw.

I just wanted to thank you all again for your help in choosing my new defender, Siren Shrike. So far, my character has proven the power sets I am using, rock! When I completed the 'Save Manticore' mish, I just shook my head in amazement. My first defender had to get help! lol. I am looking forward to experiencing greater things as she levels.

Since this thread, I mulled over an Archer character (Trick Arrow/Archery). I decided to give it a try. I know what to expect at lower levels thanks to your reply. So far, I'm enjoying playing this new defender. I'd like to see them make Trick Arrow available to the Blaster though. I think it would be a perfect fit. Probably too powerful for the AT. <shrugs>

Could always use more TA defenders. Sonic/ is a rarity too - I have a 50 sonic/sonic with Assault - that is a ton of damage right there to any team. Traps for defenders just feels really mediocre to me compared to mastermind traps and corruptor traps. Since much of traps are psuedo pets, is it possible that defender traps are not superior to the others like they should be?
