It would be completely possible, the question is if it's practical. Back in the day when it was just BaBs doing all the animation work, it was pretty definitely impractical (at least without holding up everything else)... but, Paragon now exists, and the Dev team is far larger today.

They spent a massive amount of time to ensure Brawl would never cause redraw... but, hopefully that was partly due to the engine being far more primitive back then, and much of it could be shaved off on modern attempts.

I'd certainly love it if the Devs could get around to it... but the question is always: what do you want to bump? Fortunately, development has increased to such a pace that bumping, say, a powerset doesn't mean a half a year where you get nothing! Hell, post Freedom we've gotten somewhere around as many new powersets as pre-Freedom (seriously, it was pretty shocking!)
  2. Or, give parity and remove the arc restriction. Locking them behind a story arc was always annoying, IMO... (at least you can respect between them now)
  3. If you want any help, you should post a CoH Helper and HiJack This log. It'll provide the basic information pretty much required to try to solve any issue like this. We're not psychic, so we can't magically know about your system and setup.

Alternatively, you could use the Application Compatibility Toolkit to stop the apps from (inappropriately) demanding the ability to do nefarious things to your system.

The entire point of UAC was to try to get application developers to end their horrible habit of regularly writing data to bad locations (i.e. %ProgramFiles%).

    So.. um... people are stupid.
Search for pando media booster spyware in Google... and this thread is on the first page (I don't have personalized search/history enabled, so it won't be biased towards things like CoH). None of the links I checked gave any sort of evidence that Pando was spyware (I saw some assertions that it was, but it was never in an instance where the person making that claim seemed to have any idea what they were talking about).

Those suggestions are based primarily on how often people search for things... so a lot of people might be seeing it on their control panel, and wonder "wtf is this?", and searching for "<this> spyware" or "<this> malware".

It's looking like to me that there is absolutely zero evidence that Pando does anything malicious. Even crappy evidence. NCSoft should just the first time ask you if you'd like to enable it, probably saying some crap about "speeding up downloads" while mentioning that it will upload data at the same time.

  7. I'd definitely like to see this, either as additions to the old packs, or as free items in the style of the old packs (i.e. like a Cyborg blade or something...).

Exactly. When there's a new update out, and everyone's downloading it... that's the only time the servers will be bogged down, and it's the time everyone would be running the software anyways.

P2P distribution like BitTorrent perform exactly the opposite of traditional distribution. Traditionally (client <- server), the less people downloading, the better each download will perform. When there's lots of people, the download rate will go to hell for everyone.

P2P distribution, on the other hand, performs like crap when there's only a few people downloading something (in the swarm). When there's a lot, though, download rates actually increases! It's the reverse.

Combine the two, and you should pretty much always have good download rates (once the P2P network gets enough chunks out in the wild, which will take a few minutes from the initial release). Pando might reduce costs for the companies, but it'll also have the benefit of speeding up big downloads (like issue updates) for users.

The only fundamental problem with that model is that some ISPs are douches (and, as such, it should be made easy to opt out of the P2P distribution... there's apparently already a way now, but NC needs to add it as a launcher option in the GUI).

(from a bit of looking around, most of the hate for Pando seems to be centered around LOTRO including it, and having it set to always run in the background)

Good to hear! Congratulations on the orange (gold? #DAA520!) name!
  11. So the entire list will be the SGs that were created the moment SGs came out, and likely most of which abandoned? The SG listing is pretty much useless.
  12. Unless you go with a crappy AMD hex core (which won't beat a quad core Sandy Bridge... more cores does NOT mean better performance!), you won't be getting a 6 core CPU that won't totally destroy your budget. It's really not worth it. Especially since you apparently want to go with a budget graphics card to be able to afford a second monitor. The GPU is far more often the bottle neck in games than the CPU.

Your best bet in the CPU department is likely an i5 (maybe an i7). That'll give you more than good enough performance. You can then try to go with a slightly better GPU (to actually drive two monitor without choking or compromising the graphical performance). Don't go with an AMD video card unless you enjoy lots of headaches playing CoH.

Be careful with SSDs... there's a lot of really crappy ones out there (especially the older ones). If you find a reliable one, it will be an absurd performance boost (I'm typing this from a system with an SSD that can boot so fast that the first time I rebooted it in the store I thought I hit the wrong button...).
  13. What did you do that fixes it for the rest of the play session? That'll definitely help in figuring out the source of the issue. Also, has it always done this for you, or is this a new occurrence?

You should post a CoH Helper and HiJack This log, so we'll know a bit about your system.

AVG actually has quite a number of tiers. Humorously enough, the page for AVG Free compares it against their Internet Security suite, not against AVG Anti-Virus. Internet Security is also the one AVG would push in nag screens in AVG Free (not sure if the latest version still does).

Personally, I'm not a fan of AVG because I just find them too damn annoying. There's still many other good solutions out there that don't get in your way (I don't want to see you unless you've detected something!).
  15. I noticed this earlier as well. I logged in a Mastermind I had been working on yesterday... and all of her toggles were still on, but the henchmen were gone.

It's possible that the characters' state information isn't getting flushed as often/regularly anymore... which might lead to issues on the serverside, depending on where it's stored (i.e. if it's kept in memory, it could result in excessive memory usage).

    Tech Issues...?

Seems to be two issues here: Your install of the game, and your account status.

Since you already had CoH, you didn't need to install anything else. Have you run the NCSoft Launcher and updated the install of CoH? A while back, they moved the server's addresses, which, IIRC, would be a possible cause of that. Alternatively, do you run any firewalling/AV software? That could be blocking it.

For your account status, what did you do with the code that came in the box? Did you log into the NCSoft Master Account page, and apply it to your existing account? You do not want to create a new accont using it!

Not really, since often (such as in the case of AVG and Avast) they have a non-free tier that includes features (such as remote management) geared towards business/enterprise... so they'll be doing the definition work anyways. They'll have the same incentive... and since their software often isn't bundled, they'll depend much more on word of mouth (reputation), and can't just scare massive numbers of people into turning over their credit cards when their free trial expires.

Really, by the time that sort of software is even entering the picture, odds are you're already screwed. Keeping on top of software updates... both for the OS, as well as all your third-party programs (a tool like Secunia PSI is very helpful for all those programs with non-existent/crappy updaters), is the best possible thing you can do to improve your security- beyond PEBKAC issues.

Quite frankly, the real problem is that any ISP charge people for total downloaded, instead of actually promising an amount of data they can provide at any given moment. It's a backwards system designed to milk the maximum profit possible (just like what the cellular industry does). Still, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people are on an unmetered connection.

NCSoft, if they continue using Pando, should follow Blizzard's move and allow the user to easily opt out of the P2P portion.

    Edit: [censored] you Arcanaville!

No need for a correction, I didn't mention Preems at all in the body of my post

If they could, then a player who does have access to the invention system could make a whole team with all other players who don't, thus increasing that 1 player's chances of getting even more items. Would not be fair in my opinion.
People already do that all the time: It's called x8 difficulty, and has been part of the game for quite a while. A large number of builds (even before Incarnates, and some before Inventions!) can solo 8 man spawns at a fast rate.

Guess I'll have to figure out when a ustream is, or hope some Dev comments at some other time. Hmm... HeroStats + enough data might actually be able to say with some certainty (do several x8 runs solo, then do several x8 runs with 7 Freems in tow, and see if there's anything noticeable in the data).
  20. One of the many aspects of this game that has largely set it above every other MMO for me was the absurd diversity of costumes.

I had played Guild Wars a bit before CoH... and I remember one day spending some time dying my outfit, and after spending a good while on it, I was walking through the town and... I still looked exactly the same as every other member of my class.

In CoH... I don't think I've ever noticed somebody with a duplicate costume (not counting a super team or two that did so intentionally because it would make them stand out so much). It's wonderful

Is it wrong not to want to know what is running on my computer and what those programs are up to?
I assume you mean incoming traffic? Assuming that Pando doesn't use any NAT transversal techniques (ugh, I hate NAT...), the increased amount of incoming traffic you'll receive will be largely inconsequential (likely lost in the regular noise that gets puked across the entire Internet constantly).

Is there any actual evidence that Pando is spyware, or does anything at all beyond acting as a proprietary bittorrent swarm?
  22. I've suddenly gotten curious... what impact does teaming with a Freem have on drop rates? With recipes/salvage and such, each enemy defeat has a chance to produce a corresponding drop, and if it does, it then randomly selects a person on the team to give it to.

But, since Freems can't get salvage and such, what happens in that second stage? Are they excluded from the selection process, or can they still be selected but having their salvage simply vanish into the abyss?
  23. You only have to attach a bank account if you want, I believe, a "verified" account, which isn't required. It's definitely not required to be "verified" if you're using it to pay for CoH.
