new computer advice
Couple general questions. Is 6 (or 8) cores overkill? My search on the net came up with yes. However, I am also looking to future-proof a little and I also like to dual and triple box this game at times.

If you're multi-boxing, then no. The extra cores come in handy.
Or I would like to run CoX or STO, while watching stuff I download on a second monitor, so 2 monitor support is a key feature. How do I know if the computer is capable of that? |
Anyway I am open to suggestions. I am in the $600-$800 price range. Would like at least 6 core just because I am a guy. 8 Gb is enough. Dedicated graphics card is essential (or else i would just go to walmart). Would like to keep it to the lower end so I can add a 20-23 inch monitor to go with my current 17in. I currently get by with my old 100GB HDD since i have a 1.5tb usb external. So I like the idea of getting a 100gb or so SSD drive and (maybe moving over my current 120hdd) and keeping the external for mass storage. Because of my price range I cant get everything i want, and have to sacrifice in an area. What is the best to sacrifice in? I have looked through newegg tiger and have some I like, just want to find the best fit, so figured I would ask the great community here. |
Gather the info as suggested in that thread and post back here in this one.
Unless you go with a crappy AMD hex core (which won't beat a quad core Sandy Bridge... more cores does NOT mean better performance!), you won't be getting a 6 core CPU that won't totally destroy your budget. It's really not worth it. Especially since you apparently want to go with a budget graphics card to be able to afford a second monitor. The GPU is far more often the bottle neck in games than the CPU.
Your best bet in the CPU department is likely an i5 (maybe an i7). That'll give you more than good enough performance. You can then try to go with a slightly better GPU (to actually drive two monitor without choking or compromising the graphical performance). Don't go with an AMD video card unless you enjoy lots of headaches playing CoH.
Be careful with SSDs... there's a lot of really crappy ones out there (especially the older ones). If you find a reliable one, it will be an absurd performance boost (I'm typing this from a system with an SSD that can boot so fast that the first time I rebooted it in the store I thought I hit the wrong button...).
